Manchester United FC | 2024/25 Season

We can smell champions league places.
This season is just about Amorim setting the standards, working out who is and isn't capable and willing to play his way.

There is still a lot of deadwood who can't even help in a Carabao cup game. Casemiro Eriksen Lindelof Evans Shaw Rashford Anthony and maybe even Mount all need to go.

I'm willing to give the players like Martinez Bruno Maguire this season to get up to speed with the system but they may need to be phased out too.

We have not had a week off yet, so training is very limited, so you can't expect big things. I actually like that we go to Emirates, Etihad and Tottenham and had 50%+ of the ball, which is a good start.

Hopefully players can settle and adapt over the coming months, and maybe a signing in January and the aim this season is to push for Europa

All united fans are delighted with De Ligt Mazraoui Ugarte Yoro.

Zirkzee needs a bit of adaptation time such is his game style.

He couldn't work with Berrada, so he is gone. Better to correct mistakes quick than allow them to fester

Brilliantly? how the standards have fallen
Yes they have fallen. Ugarte has done fantastically since the tottenham league game. He just needed time.
The standard will take time to build up- there is no need to compare us to the Fergie United and it will take some building to get back up there.

United fan have the same problem - this ain't going to fix in 3 months, and there will be ups and downs

Amorim to 'help' Mount after lay-off confirmed

Manchester United forward Mason Mount will be out for "several weeks" with a leg injury, says manager Ruben Amorim.

The England international was forced off just 14 minutes into Sunday's Manchester derby win at neighbours City.

Speaking after United's Carabao Cup defeat at Tottenham about Mount's expected absence, Amorim said: "I don't know the exact date but it is going to be long."

Mount was making just his fourth Premier League start of the season. He made only five starts during his first season with United after joining from Chelsea in July 2023.

The 25-year-old missed five months of last season with thigh and calf injuries, and has been out for two months of the current campaign after suffering hamstring and head injuries.

Asked whether Mount is injury prone, Amorim added: "That is not my department.

"What I can do is help Mase to teach him to play our game while he is recovering, to give him that time to think about different things.

"The worst part is that we don't have time to train as you should do while recovering with a lot of injuries. We are always travelling, we don't train enough with the team together. It makes it hard to recover for the games.

"We try to manage it with rotation. With Mason Mount, we are going to help him and it is really hard for him to be out so long. He is trying really hard. If they try hard, we will help them to the end."

Pundits agree on Manchester United and Marcus Rashford verdict after 'rogue' interview

Pundits Ally McCoist and Peter Crouch believe Marcus Rashford's relationship with Manchester United has run its course after the forward delivered a bombshell interview with journalist Henry Winter, in which he admitted he is ready for a new challenge.

The 27-year-old has represented the Manchester club for his entire career and is a product of their academy. He made his first team debut in a Europa League knockout game back in February 2016 and he has now amassed over 420 senior appearances across all competitions.

Rashford was dropped from Ruben Amorim's squad for the derby win over Manchester City last weekend, as well as their midweek defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup. "When I leave it's going to be 'no hard feelings'," Rashford told Winter.

"You're not going to have any negative comments from me about Manchester United. That's me as a person. For me, personally, I think I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps."

Numerous Saudi Pro League clubs, as well as Paris Saint-Germain, have since emerged as potential destinations for Rashford should he depart his boyhood club. For McCoist, speaking to TNT Sports over the weekend, a separation could be best for both United and Rashford.

"I’m surprised he hasn’t had the conversation – and it doesn’t look like he has – with his new manager (Ruben Amorim) beforehand," the pundit said. "I think he looked a little bit surprised when he heard the news.

"I look at the relationship and it just looks like it’s run its course. It happens. It happens with footballers; it happens in life.

"It’s now at the stage it probably suits both parties that they shake hands, say thank you very much for your service and he goes and gets on with his career. Because what is he, 27? He’s got his whole career ahead of him."

Former Liverpool and Spurs striker, Crouch, echoed a similar sentiment as he believes Rashford still has his best years ahead of him, but will need an arm round the shoulder wherever he goes next.

"I played, not to the level Marcus is at at the moment, until I was 38. He’s a player with so much talent," Crouch said. "He just needs a platform maybe where people put an arm around him and he’s loved again and can perform to the ability we know he’s got.

"I found it all strange. The fact that he was allowed to do this rogue interview. The comments didn’t help matters.

"There have been rumblings about it for a long time. For all concerned I think it is the best time to move on."

'Everything is so hard' - Amorim searches for answers at Man Utd

Could life at Manchester United get any more dispiriting?

They have just lost 3-0 at home to "little" Bournemouth, as described by Cherries owner Bill Foley, for the second season running, a result that means they will spend Christmas 13th in the table. It is the first time they have been in the bottom half at this stage since the pre-Premier League days.

Their fans – who booed Ruben Amorim's team off at the final whistle – are so upset at the imposition of a ticket price rise to a flat £66 with no concessions that they are joining forces with fellow supporters at bitter rivals Liverpool to protest when the two sides meet at Anfield on 5 January.

Just as Amorim was telling the media he felt fans were "tired" in his post-match press conference, a leak from the ceiling led to water running onto journalists on the front row, forcing one of them to move.

While many fans will be quite happy to learn of journalists covering their club getting a soaking, as a public farce it takes some beating.

But for Amorim, United's position is no laughing matter. Defender Lisandro Martinez told Match of the Day the on-field situation makes him "angry". His boss has to find some answers.

"In this moment, everything is so hard," said Amorim. "At a club like Manchester United, to lose 3-0 at home, it's really tough for everybody.

"Of course the fans are really disappointed and tired. You can feel it in the stadium in the first play. At the first goal-kick with Andre Onana, he's thinking what to do and pushing the other guys and everybody is so anxious.

"I understand that, but we have to face it."

Lisandro Martinez says Manchester United are improving and ‘deserve more’

Lisandro Martinez says he can “see a light” at Manchester United despite Sunday’s “unacceptable” 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth adding to the darkness around the club.

The Red Devils were booed by some of their own fans as they suffered a humiliating Old Trafford loss to the Cherries just a week after a memorable late derby win at Manchester City.

United lacked that spirit and cutting edge when Bournemouth visited, with Dean Huijsen becoming the latest player to exploit their set piece fragility when nodding home a first-half free-kick.

Amorim acknowledged the need to address that weakness, so too his players’ inability to deal with setbacks after Antoine Semenyo scored two minutes after Justin Kluivert converted a penalty.

Bournemouth left Old Trafford with a 3-0 victory – just as they did last December – but defender Martinez believes things are on the up despite the club heading into Christmas languishing 13th.

“We are very disappointed because I think we are playing so well,” the Argentina international said. “We are playing so well, we create many chances and unfortunately we couldn’t score, so disappointed.

“We have to adjust a few things, especially at set pieces, but I think we have to start games scoring the first goal. We want to work on that.

“I think we have a great coach and a great group as well. We have the chance now because we know in this club losing is unacceptable, but we are here to change things.”

Put to Martinez that United do not appear to be getting rewarded for improving performances, he told MUTV: “Yeah, for sure we deserve more. I see a light in this club that I think we are going to achieve that.

For sure we deserve more. I see a light in this club that I think we are going to achieve that, Lisandro Martinez

“You see in the games that we are improving. We have to believe and for sure it’s hard to accept this kind of result.

“But I believe a lot in the staff, in our team and, how I said, we are going to change this.”

The Bournemouth defeat came hot on the heels of Thursday’s chaotic 4-3 Carabao Cup quarter-final loss at Tottenham – a double blow United will look to bounce back from at Wolves on Boxing Day.

“We have to now recover and then prepare well for the game because we need points,” Martinez added. “We want to change this situation. I am 100 per cent confident on that.”

As United nurse their wounds, high-flying Bournemouth sit fifth in the standings at Christmas – a place that could prove enough to seal Champions League qualification come the end of the season.

Andoni Iraola’s impressive Cherries will look to extend their unbeaten run to six and collect a fifth victory when Crystal Palace come to town on Boxing Day.

“Shellshocked, to be honest,” goalscorer Semenyo said. “It’s back-to-back wins here.

“I think we got the press right. I think everything in the first half and the second half we done (sic) it to a tee and, yeah, it’s just a good team performance.

“3-0 away, three points. It’s lovely. It’s just great.

“Definitely (we’re) in a good run of form. We just need to keep going, just have to be positive.

“Everyone’s buying into what the manager’s doing in training and you can see it in games as well.

“So, (we) just have to keep pushing and who knows what this team can do?”

Amorim given free rein over Rashford and questions ‘choices’ of entourage

Ruben Amorim’s exclusion of Marcus Rashford from Manchester United’s past three match-day squads is solely his decision, with the head coach under no pressure from Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s football department.

The Portuguese also questioned the “choices” of people surrounding Rashford following an interview with the journalist Henry Winter two days after the Manchester City game in which the forward said he was “ready for a new challenge”. This was interpreted as the player wanting a move.

“It is a hard situation but I understand that this kind of player have a lot of people around them, and making some choices that sometimes is not the first idea from the player,” Amorim said on Monday.

“I’m always here for helping Marcus as another player and they have to do what they have to do. I say they chose to do that interview because it’s not just Marcus.”

Rashford is for sale in the January transfer window, a decision approved by Ratcliffe, but it is understood the player’s demotion from the squad was purely Amorim’s choice.

Amorim again left the forward out of the squad of 20 for the 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday. This followed Rashford not being in the squad for the Carabao Cup defeat at Tottenham on Thursday and the victory at City the previous Sunday.

After dropping the 27-year-old and Alejandro Garnacho for the City game, Amorim said: “It is important the performance in training, the performance in games, the way you dress, the way you eat, the way you engage with your teammates, the way you push your teammates.” Since then he described Rashford’s absence as being for “selection” reasons.

Despite Amorim’s cited reasons for leaving out the England international and informing him he will be reinstated if his training performance improves, it is unclear whether Rashford would be recalled.

Amorim knows job in 'danger' without victories

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says the vast expense of bringing him in will not shield him from the sack if he fails to produce a winning team.

While United sources stress there is total support for the new boss inside Old Trafford, recent results and performances have made some fans nervous.

Away supporters booed their team at the final whistle of the 2-0 defeat by Wolves at Molineux on Boxing Day, and with many exiting quickly it left the players to acknowledge hundreds of empty yellow seats before heading to the tunnel.

"The manager of Manchester United can never, no matter what, be comfortable," said Amorim.

"You can argue I have been here one month and I've had four training [sessions], but we are not winning. That is the reality."

Amorim has collected seven points from seven Premier League games since taking charge last month - only one more point than fellow Portuguese Vitor Pereira, who has won both his games since becoming Wolves boss.

Five defeats in Amorim's first 10 games is the worst record of any new United manager since Walter Crickmer, who stepped up from being club secretary in the 1930s.

It is not what was anticipated when chief executive Omar Berrada flew to Lisbon to offer Amorim the job in the wake of Erik ten Hag's dismissal on 28 October.

United were so convinced in Amorim, they paid Sporting £10.6m in compensation to get him out of his contract.

But Amorim does not believe that will save him if results do not improve.

"I know that if we don't win, regardless if they pay the buyout or not, every manager is in danger," he said. "I like that because that is the job."

The five-day gap between the home game with Newcastle on 30 December and an immensely difficult visit to old rivals and title favourites Liverpool on 5 January is the longest spell Amorim will have had to work with his players since his appointment.

He will have another spare week after that, then three more midweek games to work with a squad United sources say is not expected to change much in personnel during the January transfer window, because of the club's tight Profit and Sustainability position.

Evidently, it would have been far easier for such a dramatic transition to take place during the summer.

Amorim did ask if his switch could be delayed until the end of the season but that request was rejected by Berrada.

"There's no point talking or thinking about that," said Amorim. "I'm here and have to focus on the job.

"It's part of football to have these difficult moments. I already knew it was going to be tough. You expect to win more games, to have players with more confidence to sell the idea and to work and improve things.

"At this moment it's really hard. We have to survive to have time and then to improve the team."

Man Utd relegation 'a possibility' says Amorim

It is 50 years since Manchester United were relegated

Legend has it that the great Denis Law sent his old club down with a backheeled goal for Manchester City that he didn't celebrate.

The truth was slightly different as United were doomed in 1973-74 if Law had scored or not.

As time moved on and English top flight football came to be dominated by high finance - and United were able to generate more of it than anyone else - no-one remotely thought history might repeat itself.

We have long got used to United not being what they were but this season has been something else, and Monday's game - against a Newcastle side who ripped their hosts apart for half an hour - led to head coach Ruben Amorim uttering words it was scarcely believed imaginable.

Asked by BBC Sport if United were in a battle to avoid the drop, Amorim said: "I think that it is a possibility. We have to be clear with our fans."

I will only start thinking about relegation jf Southampton come to OT and win the league game after anfield.

The club and the fans need to be ready for the rebuild.

I don't think Man Utd will be relegated but the fact we're even having the conversation is astonishing.

The Current form is relegation form. We have no Devine right for success, or to stay in the Premier League unless we improve, and what the manager said has to be taken seriously.

Could Ruben Amorim become Ruben Interim and get sacked this season?!?!!
Was unthinkable 2 weeks ago!

Never say never, anything is possible. However, more likely he will resign than getting the chop if he keeps losing games.

Surely, he's come in with the blessing of a long process, which includes a complete overhaul.

He was only given a 30 month contract though. I think the fans will get too toxic if we keep losing. He needs a break to turn things around. A signing, Rashford out asap, and Mount and Shaw getting a run of games in.

Needs to get through this weekend with some level of respectability and then take it from there. At least he is now able to get training time with the group.

There's no money to spend. Ten hag brought alot of players who don't fit the UTD profile. And where in a bigger mess now than before . Feel sorry for Amorim in a way, he's basically working with his hands tied behind his back.

Rashford is not the only one, you say Shaw. But he's a sicknote, hardly ever plays, it's high time we moved him on.
We have Casimero and Ericksson, who are now on their last legs and are on big salaries, surely they need moving on.
Anthony ( fidget spinner) has zero output, clearly lacks speed and strength and offers no creativity at all who also is on mega bucks.

We've got issues with the Goalie, not consistent at all. Martinez is really struggling. It's basically a HOT MESS.

Liverpool game could get really Ugly if they don't dramatically improve, hopefully take inspiration from the city game, and they turn up.

Here is what we need to do,

Get the players who Amorim does not want OUT. Even if it means replacing them with kids like Collyer Gore.
We can pick up a couple of loan signings like Reguillon to make sure we won't go down.

Eriksen Lindelof Casemiro Rashford Shaw and Anthony on loan. It means we wont improve on 14th- but this is now about who is going to be on board in the summer and who isn't.

Zirkzee Onana Bayindir Heaton Mount can be sorted in the summer. We do need some bodies and keepers

The problem is we are expecting too much for the team, in the circumstances. What should have happened was we should have kept ETH on because when your culture is rotten and your recruitment and retention is awful (Maguire Anthony prices, length of contract for Casemiro, Mount, renewal of Rashford and Shaw- to name a few) then there does come a time where you have to reap what you sow. We should have accepted being 8th for a few seasons whilst all these contracts unwound, and that would give a couple of years to Yoro, Garancho, Mainoo and Rasmus to develop. We want these kids to be the finished articles now, without proper senior players. We should have focussed on getting the recruitment right (which was decent in the summer) to go again in 26-27.

We fans are the problem- we want it all too quick- and the issues with the club mentioned above- we had to just lie low for a few seasons with ETH, but we couldnt accept it. Now we have no money, and players that dont fit the new managers style, and we still want results!

Rashford set to miss Liverpool match with illness

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford is set to miss Sunday's Premier League trip to leaders Liverpool through illness.

Rashford, 27, was left out of manager Ruben Amorim's squad for four games, initially because of his poor performance in training and his attitude around club colleagues.

Meanwhile, Amorim confirmed the club would be triggering the option to extend former skipper Harry Maguire's present deal to 2026.

But he added Maguire "needs to improve as a leader because we are starving for leaders on the pitch".

Amorim brought Rashford back into the fold for the home defeat by Newcastle on 30 December, only to leave him on the bench as United suffered a fourth consecutive defeat and third successive game without a goal.

Serie A title contenders Napoli are the latest club to be linked with Rashford, who United would be willing to move on loan if his wages, in excess of £300,000 a week, were covered.

United are 14th place in the league table heading into the weekend's fixtures.

With skipper Bruno Fernandes and midfielder Manuel Ugarte returning from suspension at Anfield, it was not certain whether Rashford would be in Amorim's squad.

But the former Sporting boss has ruled out the possibility.

"At the moment he is ill," said Amorim. "He is not training and this week he is out."

Asked about Rashford's position within the club, he added: "It's the same situation. We will see in the future, but this is like a normal player and then I make a selection."

Man Utd 'too anxious, too afraid' – Amorim

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim says his players are "too anxious, too afraid" and that his team's poor form has taken its toll on him.

United head to leaders Liverpool on Sunday (16:30 GMT) on the back of four successive defeats in all competitions - including three in the Premier League.

They have won just two top-flight matches since Amorim took charge in November and are only seven points above the relegation zone.

"You can see in my face, you can compare it to the way when I arrive and now," said Amorim, who has lost five of his eight Premier League games in charge.

"Of course there is a lot of pressure. For me, it's the pride and also the performance.

"It's harder when we don't perform well."

United lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth, 2-0 at Wolves before slumping to a 2-0 home defeat against Newcastle in the space of eight days over the festive period.

They have not lost four league games in a row in the same season since between December and February 1979, while they last suffered four defeats in a row without scoring back in April 1909.

'I didn't like playing against Liverpool for Man Utd'

"They are anxious, sometimes afraid on the pitch," Amorim said of his players. "We have to cope with that."

On Friday, United's Portuguese boss said "we are starving for leaders on the pitch" as he praised defender Harry Maguire for bouncing back from difficult times.

"We need the leaders to step up to help the other guys and I'm the most responsible person here to improve the performances," he added.

"You can see the players are trying, sometimes too anxious, too afraid to play football because this is a difficult moment and we will help the players to be better."

United, who are 23 points behind Liverpool having played one game more, have not won at Anfield since January 2016 when Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the game.

Meanwhile, United have failed to score on the past five visits, with their last goal at the venue coming in December 2018.

Despite his team's worrying form, Amorim said better times were coming for United and their fans.

"I will do my best," he said. "I am giving everything to help the club and we are going to succeed. I know it is hard to understand that in this moment, but we are going to succeed."

Excellent performance.
Of course we aren't back. Having some training time and our first eleven decently rested helped.
We are very light in the front 5 positions and Ugarte Mainoo Bruno can not play like that every 3 days.

Bruno magnificent, but it was probably the first time he had 10 days without a game midseason.
Ugarte too strong to the end after missing the previous game.

Another week off before arsenal at the emirates, so feeling optimistic again

Mount and Shaw need to get their contracts terminated. Both of them are injury prone players. Shaw, in particular, has been stealing a living for over ten years. I would terminate his contract.

Agree. The sicknote culture needs to be eradicated quickly

Excellent performance. Agree.

Key is, they need to back this up with consistent performances against low block teams

Great performance and great result, but I am not getting carried away. Still a lot of work to be done and lot of dead wood to clear out.

We need so many new players but if I could sign a player in any position in January, it would be a striker. Hojlund and Zirkzee are nowhere near good enough. It is also clear that Ugarte and Mainoo need to be regulars in midfield. We desperately need to sign back up for those two, because Casemiro and Erikson aren’t good enough anymore.

This will be a long rebuild but I am not sure if the fanbase have the patience for it.

To think we paid 70 million for hojlund and 50 for zirkzee. Plain stupidity

Man Utd winger Diallo signs new contract until 2030

Manchester United winger Amad Diallo has signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract, until June 2030.

The 22-year-old's previous deal had been due to expire at the end of the season, though the club had the option of triggering a 12-month extension clause.

But United have opted to hand fresh terms to the Ivory Coast international, who has scored six goals in 27 appearances this season.

"I am really proud to have signed this new contract. I have had some incredible moments with this club already but there is so much more to come," Diallo said.

"I have huge ambitions in the game and I want to achieve history at Manchester United.

"It has been a difficult season for everyone, but I fully believe that we are on the right path and the future is going to be really special. I am ready to give everything to help the team and make our supporters proud again."

Diallo joined Manchester United in 2021 from Italian club Atalanta and has scored nine goals in 50 appearances.

"Everyone is delighted with Amad's development," technical director Jason Wilcox said.

"His quality on the ball, versatility and determination makes him a key part of the future of Manchester United.

"The best years of his career are ahead of him, and we all look forward to helping Amad to reach his immense potential and achieve success at the club in the coming seasons."

Really happy with the result and performance.

Until the red card, Arsenal despite having most of the possession didn't really look like scoring. But Dalot got a silly red card and then it was all Arsenal. They got the equalizer straight away. but we showed a lot of fight and heart to hold on and take it to penalties, in which we prevailed.

Under Amorin, we have won away at Etihad, got a very good draw at Anfield and now knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup at the Emirates. We just need to find a way against the smaller teams, because we can't be losing games at home against the likes of Forest and Bournemouth. Amorin has to find a way to fix that, but so far, I am happy with Amorin. Hopefully, we can move on crap players like Rashford asap, and bring in a couple of players in this window.

Brilliant result yesterday- especially after it went to 12 vs 10. Disgrace of a referreeing performance, but we stuck at it well!

I am worried about when we go back to 2 games a week from Thursday.

Especially as the likes of Lindelof Casemiro Eriksen Anthony Mount and Shaw are sidelined.

Tbh, the players you mentioned aren’t even good enough so them being sidelined doesn’t really make a big difference.

Of course it makes a difference- not being able to rotate and play every 3 days for an extended period is not possible for our players- so performances will drop.

Hojlund Mainoo and even Ugarte are not able to play every 3 days - and you will end up killing the wingbacks too.

So performance levels will slide- and the fanbase will get frustrated again

Amad on fire to save utd after being played off the park by Saints.

First time I seen this kid , it was clear hes a serious talent, future pl legend.

Southampton should have been out of sight, they played Man U off the park for most of the game

It was actually brutal seeing the way Sulemana terrorised Yoro all evening

However, there's a reason Southampton are bottom of the table, they find ways to lose and Amad is a top player, he's carrying them of late

Amad once again showing why he's the outstanding young player in the Premier League.

However we were awful for large parts. No cohesion, lacked the energy and drive, which has been the big issue in lower key games, where not up for the fight.

Wish we could play City and Liverpool every week

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Saw it straight away. Couldn't back it up after playing 120 minutes on Sunday.
Woeful performance.
Deserved the win in the end, ( we missed chances too btw) but a horrible performance

Southampton should have been out of sight, they played Man U off the park for most of the game

It was actually brutal seeing the way Sulemana terrorised Yoro all evening

However, there's a reason Southampton are bottom of the table, they find ways to lose and Amad is a top player, he's carrying them of late

Yoro looks over rated, rarely you see a defender taken apart so much in a PL match.

Saints run out of energy late in the game. Credit to the Utd manager who knew this, they were always in the game but needed some class from a young lad to pull back the 3 points.

Man Utd reject Napoli move for Garnacho

Manchester United have turned down an approach for winger Alejandro Garnacho from Italian side Napoli.

The Serie A side have made Garnacho, 20, their number-one target and plan to use money raised from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's impending move to Paris St-Germain.

However, they have failed with an initial approach for Garnacho that fell significantly below the Red Devils' valuation of the Argentina international.

It is not known the precise nature of the communication but it is thought the figure mentioned by Napoli was around £40m.

Though United will listen to offers for academy products to fund a rebuild for manager Ruben Amorim, they are not encouraging bids for Garnacho or England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.

Speaking on Wednesday, Amorim said Garnacho had a future at Old Trafford.

"That is clear. He has talent," said Amorim.

"I think he changed the way he sees himself.

"He's finding the best way to play in this system and is improving during training."

Garnacho played the full 90 minutes as United came from behind to beat Southampton 3-1 at Old Trafford on Thursday in the Premier League, a victory achieved thanks to a 12-minute hat-trick from Amad Diallo.

Signed from Atletico Madrid in 2021, Garnacho has made 117 first-team appearances for United since making his debut in 2022 and scored 23 goals.

He has netted eight times in 31 appearances this season but was dropped -alongside team-mate Marcus Rashford - by Amorim for December's win against Manchester City at the Etihad.

Hopefully a good learning curve, it was worrying at times, but not a time to panic just yet
I remember the shambolic debuts of vidic and Evra, they turned out OK.

He's still a kid so too early to say

I do think he's being put in a difficult situation, he's playing in a back 3 which I don't think he's done before, that too in a new league and with a RWB who isn't really suited to that role or offers a lot of protection

Yesterday in particular I thought he was let down by Amorim, he was getting beat, again and again and again. Yet Amorim did nothing about it.

He's lucky Amad turned the game at the end as well as Southampton not taking advantage because otherwise today would have all been about how bad Yoro was

Agree he could have been better supported esp by his central defence but the ease of going past him is rarely seen so often in one game.

I have a feeling Amorim is not happy with 90% of the squad and wants them gone including him if he cant play in a back 3 , unless he plays some great matches until end of the season.

Excellent points. Yoro been basically thrown in at the Deep end in a system where alot of players don't fit the profile.

Almost every United academy player starts off with a bang, gets hyped as the next big thing and then falls off a cliff for different reasons.

Remains to be seen if Amad can buck the trend.

Bro. its because of UTD's stature as a Global Giant that the players get overly hyped alot of times.

With this, pressure is incredibly high to constantly perform majority of the time.

Some can handle it, and some cant.

Man Utd and Scotland legend Law dies aged 84

Former Scotland, Manchester United and Manchester City striker Denis Law - the only Scottish player to have won the Ballon d'Or - has died at the age of 84.

The man dubbed 'The King' and 'The Lawman' spent 11 years at Old Trafford, his 237 goals in 404 appearances placing him third in United's history behind Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton.

Born in Aberdeen, Law began his career with Huddersfield Town, also had a spell in Italy with Torino and was capped 55 times for his country - his 30 goals making him Scotland's joint top scorer of all time.

He was sold for a British record fee three times during his career.

In 2021, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.

A family statement said: "It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace.

RIP. End of the Trinity - Best, Law and Charlton. Unfortunately endured a terrible illness in the last years of his life.

Bill Shankly loved Denis Law like a son. Remember reading he wanted to sign him for Liverpool but the directors refused.

Betis best placed to sign Man Utd's Antony on loan

La Liga side Real Betis are leading the chase to sign Manchester United winger Antony on loan for the rest of the season.

The Brazilian has failed to come close to justifying his status as the second most expensive player in United's history.

Antony cost £81.3m when United signed him in August 2022. He has since scored 12 goals, three of which came in his first three Premier League games.

The 24-year-old has scored one Premier League goal since April 2023 and his opportunities in the first team have dwindled - from 23 league starts in his first year to 15 last season and none during the current campaign.

Antony has featured in just 13 of United's 32 games in all competitions this season.

Against Southampton on Thursday, he failed to convert a glorious opportunity when sliding onto an Alejandro Garnacho cross - managing to turn the ball back to goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale even though he had an empty goal to aim at.

A number of clubs have inquired about Antony, with United realising they will have to subsidise his wages.

Talks with Betis, who are 11th in La Liga and facing a Conference League play-off against Belgian side Gent next month, are most advanced, with the club hopeful of concluding a deal, though nothing is agreed.

Good riddance. Anthony has been one of the worst signings in Premier league history when you figure in the Transfer Fee and salaries.

Man Utd pay emotional Old Trafford tribute to Law

Manchester United paid an emotional tribute to former striker Denis Law - who died on Friday at the age of 84 - before their defeat at home to Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

Law scored 237 goals in 404 appearances for United in a trophy-laden spell between 1962 and 1973.

All flags at Old Trafford are at half mast, with players wearing black armbands, and a piper played Flower of Scotland as the teams emerged.

A poem was read as the stadium fell silent, with United legends Sir Alex Ferguson, Pat Crerand, Alex Stepney and Brian Kidd all present.

Stadium announcer Alan Keegan, speaking to the fans, said: "Beyond the goals the man stood tall, a heart of gold who inspired all.

"He's still the King of the Stretford End."

Ferguson laid a wreath on the centre circle as the supporters applauded.

Rashford not given up on playing for Man Utd again

Marcus Rashford has not abandoned all hope of playing for Manchester United again.

Rashford has not featured for United since being substituted in the Europa League victory over Viktoria Plzen on 12 December, after which his training performances were called into question by head coach Ruben Amorim.

The 27-year-old has been on the bench once in the intervening period, when he was an unused substitute in the 3-0 home defeat by Newcastle on 30 December.

Asked about Rashford in the wake of Sunday's 3-1 loss to Brighton at Old Trafford, Amorim said "it's his choice", which led to speculation Rashford had asked not to be considered.

However, club sources do not believe that was what Amorim meant and feel the former Sporting boss was merely outlining Rashford's future is in his own hands.

Sources close to the player have stressed Rashford wants to play for United and has no significant issue with Amorim and would play if he was called upon.

Rashford has been linked with a number of European clubs and the likelihood remains he will leave on loan before the current transfer window closes at the beginning of February.

It is not known how often Rashford has trained with the first time since his exile from Amorim's matchday squad began.

On Wednesday, cameras will be allowed into United's Carrington training ground to film the first 15 minutes of the club's pre-match session ahead of the key Europa League encounter with Rangers at Old Trafford.

Both clubs are currently in a coveted top eight spot, with United in seventh on 12 points and Rangers a point and a place behind.

However, 17th-placed Plzen, are just three points behind United with two games remaining and neither club is certain even of a play-off spot.

I won't be deluded about Man Utd problems - Amorim

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has stepped back from his description of his team as "maybe" the worst side in the club's history but said it would be "delusional" to think they do not have major problems.

Amorim said he made a mistake by ripping into his players immediately after the 3-1 home defeat against Brighton on Sunday, which he felt then led to his press conference outburst afterwards.

Asked about the storm his comments created before United's Europa League game against Rangers, Amorim said he was talking more about himself than his players.

But he also accepted results since he took over in November – 11 points and six defeats from 11 Premier League games – were not good enough.

"I was talking more for myself than for my players," he said. "But sometimes it is really hard to hide my frustration in that moment.

"The good thing is I said the same things in a different way in the dressing room five minutes before. The response was quite normal because I'm really blunt with my players.

"Normally I don't talk (to the players) after a game. After this game, I needed to talk. Maybe it was a mistake because then I got more nervous, went to the press conference really nervous and said things I shouldn't say."

However, Amorim did not say he regretted the general observation that his team is in major trouble.

While three successive victories have put United in a good position to secure a top-eight berth and direct entry to the Europa League's last 16, they are out of the League Cup and are 13th in the Premier League.

Amorim believes it would be unhelpful to try to disguise the fact there are significant issues that must be resolved.

"I am not taking the responsibility from the players," he said. "I am saying, and I am really direct in these things, at this moment we are performing really badly and our results are really bad.

"I'm saying the obvious. If you want, I can be delusional and say different things. But I say it as I saw it.

"I think it is a good thing to be really honest. You saw one thing, I saw one thing. If you are in the stadium you can understand it. So let's face it and work on it."

However, Amorim and defender Harry Maguire have different explanations as to why United have been so poor - particularly at Old Trafford, where they have lost four of their last five league games.

United's six defeats in their opening 12 home league games is their worst performance since 1893-94.

Amorim focused on the anxiety that ripples through his team when they play on home soil.

"It's clear," he said. "We are more nervous playing at home than away and it's getting harder."

However England defender Maguire pointed to United going behind in all of their last five league games - including in three of them conceding within five minutes.

"If I could explain it, we'd change it straightaway," said Maguire. "We have players who have won lots of trophies in club football but we are not playing well enough as a team.

"We gave Brighton a goal. We had spoken about it pre-match. The first goal against Nottingham Forest was a set play – and against Bournemouth.

"These aren't things that are tactically a problem. You have to be mentally ready to win a match. At the moment we are not getting the small margins because we are not mentally focused."

Central defender Victor Lindelof has returned to training after missing the previous seven matches while striker Marcus Rashford also took part in the main session despite not featuring since being axed for last month's Manchester derby.

Antony and Alejandro Garnacho are also expected to be involved despite being linked with transfer window moves away from the club.

Man Utd at risk of PSR breach, club tell fans

Manchester United have written to fans to warn them that the club are at risk of breaching spending rules and ticket prices could rise as a result.

In a letter to fan groups, United said they must "act now".

Under the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules (PSR), clubs can lose up to £105m over three years.

"If we do not act now, we are in danger of falling to comply with PSR/FFP requirements," the club said in the letter.

"We are currently making a significant loss each year - totalling over £300m in the past three years. This is not sustainable.

"We will have to make some difficult choices. That has included a significant reduction to our workforce as well as cuts across many areas of spend across our club.

"We do not expect fans to make up all the current shortfall - but we do need to look at our ticketing strategy to ensure we are charging the right amount, and offering the right discounts, across our products for our fans."

The club letter was in response to a letter from fans groups The 1958 and Fan Coalition 58 urging United to "consider the long-term implications of ticket price increases".

In September, United reported a net loss of £113.2m in the year to 30 June.

It followed losses of £28.7m in 2022-23 and £115.5m in 2021-22, and took total losses over the past five years to over £370m.

United were accused of exploiting fans after taking the mid-season decision to raise matchday ticket prices to £66 per game, with no concessions for children or pensioners.

The ticket pricing announcement came after the club confirmed the cost of paying off former boss Erik ten Hag and his staff was £10.4m, while the cost of paying a release clause to bring in his replacement Ruben Amorim was £11m.

In November, United revealed they had spent £8.6m as part of a redundancy programme that had led to about 250 employees losing their jobs.

Last season Everton had a 10-point deduction reduced to six on appeal in February for breaching PSR for the three-year period to 2021-22.

Nottingham Forest were also charged with PSR breaches last season and were docked four points in March.

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to give his side victory in their all-British match with Rangers at Old Trafford.

Rangers' fans were still celebrating what they thought was a famous draw after Cyriel Dessers had brilliantly levelled United's opener with an 88th-minute drive into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

But Fernandes cut those celebrations short when he got on the end of Lisandro Martinez's angled cross to the far post and drove a first-time shot through Jack Butland's legs.

From his seat in the directors' box, legendary United boss and former Rangers striker Sir Alex Ferguson could only shake his head in wonderment at the drama of it all.

At least the ending meant the game was not known purely for Butland's terrible own goal, when he came to clear Christian Eriksen's 52nd-minute corner and succeeded only in punching the ball into his own net.

United's character shone through just four days after head coach Ruben Amorim had stated his side were "maybe the worst team in Manchester United history".

For Rangers, it was a cruel way to extend a run in which Philippe Clement's side have not won away from Ibrox since 8 December.

They drop into the play-off places in 13th and need to beat Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise on home soil next week and hope other results go their way to gain automatic passage into the last 16.

United, now fourth, will definitely make it if they win away at Romanians FCSB.

Marcus Rashford should move on from Manchester United, says Rio Ferdinand - 'I used to remember him smiling'

It is time for Marcus Rashford "to go to a new club, a new situation, a new environment", according to Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, who urged the forward to move on from his time at the club. Rashford last played for United in December. "I used to always remember him smiling, looking like a young kid who can't believe he's here, living the dream," Ferdinand said.

Rio Ferdinand believes it is time for Marcus Rashford to move on from Manchester United and find "a new environment" as he continues to be frozen out by new boss Ruben Amorim.

The England international was spotted in the stands at Old Trafford, watching on as United clinched a 2-1 victory over Rangers in the UEFA Europa League.

Asked what the next steps are for Rashford following his omission from the squad, Ferdinand urged the 27-year-old to find a new challenge.

"I think that's an indication of what the club want to happen, I think they want to get him out," Ferdinand said on TNT Sports.

"I think he needs to go to a new club, a new situation, a new environment for him. I think it's best for both parties, himself and for Manchester United in that sense.

"He's a player that, when he burst onto the scene and was scoring goals, I used to always remember him smiling, looking like a young kid who can't believe he's here, living the dream.

"I've not seen that face, I've not seen those emotions for a long time, for far too long.

"I want to see players happy, and I don't think he's enjoyed his football while he's been here the last few years, so I think it would be best for everybody if he goes."

Another player who could move on from Old Trafford is Alejandro Garnacho, who has been linked with a controversial move to Chelsea this month.

United travel to Fulham next – live on TNT Sports and discovery+ – before rounding off their European league phase campaign away at FCSB.

Effectively, the Argentine could have played his last game for the club at Old Trafford.

"I think they [the fans] were making their feelings very clear," Ferdinand said on the positive reception Garnacho received on Thursday.

"They were singing his name and that was a sign of what they feel about him. They love him, they talk about him, they sing about him often.

"One thing he does give you is he gets you off the edge of your seat, he's exciting. He's the one player that runs off the ball, without the ball. He's always very direct.

"But I think the [Man Utd] system is the one thing that goes against him. Amorim doesn't play with out-and-out wide wingers. He wants his wingers to play inside the pitch, start inside the pitch, and that's not natural for Garnacho.

"I don't think you see the best of him from those inside areas. Starting wide, coming in, drifting.

"That will be one of the main reasons that will go against Garnacho staying at the football club, and why they might listen to offers for him.

"There's no doubt this kid has huge talent, huge ability."

He added: "I don't think he'll be the one initiating this move. I don't think he's the one going, 'I want to leave'. I think he's the one going, 'you want me to go, you're listening to offers? If that's the case, I will start talking as well'.

"I think that's the situation."

Away fans in home end cannot be stopped - Man Utd

Manchester United say they cannot "completely eliminate" the possibility of away fans obtaining tickets in areas designated for home supporters at Old Trafford.

More than 3,500 Rangers fans were in the away end for Thursday's Europa League game between the sides but television footage showed dozens more celebrating an 88th-minute equaliser in a game they lost 2-1.

United say they took a number of "strict" preventative measures to block away fans securing tickets in the home end and the club insists tickets were only allocated to supporters on the club's database.

But the club acknowledged that, given the "unauthorised touting of tickets", they could not "completely eliminate" the possibility of away fans sitting in the home end.

United will launch a full investigation into how tickets for home areas reached Rangers fans and say they will impose the "strongest possible sanctions" against registered ticket holders found to be in breach of regulations.

Following the match, Greater Manchester Police said they made 39 arrests across the night - 26 of which came following disorder in the city centre.

The club apologised to supporters in 2023 after more than 2000 Galatasaray fans were allowed to access the home section for a Champions League match at Old Trafford.

The Turkish club were fined £44,420 for the behaviour of their supporters at the stadium.

'No way back' for Rashford at Man Utd – Ferdinand.

England forward Marcus Rashford has been warned there is "no way back for him" at Manchester United after his professionalism was questioned by manager Ruben Amorim.

Rashford, 27, has not played for United since 12 December and on Sunday Amorim said he would rather have 63-year-old goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital in his squad rather than "a player who doesn't give the maximum every day".

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand, a six-time Premier League title winner, says Rashford will have to leave Old Trafford.

"If I was the player the manager said that about, my heart, my pride, my ego - it's embarrassment," said Ferdinand on his Rio Presents YouTube channel., external

"For someone to question your application, to question you giving 100 per cent for the team, saying you're lacking effort and taking shortcuts, that's a damning comment. There's no way back for Marcus after that.

"If he did come back that means other players can take their foot off the gas and have a way back into the team and take shortcuts."

Premier League title winner Chris Sutton said Rashford needs to improve his attitude.

"He is too big for his boots," said Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club. "It's quite basic what Amorim said and for whatever reason, Rashford is playing up and that's totally unacceptable.

"We all know Marcus Rashford was a wonderful player, probably still is. What Amorim has done is his last resort, and is well within his rights to do. He is not asking for anything extraordinary, just asking for Rashford to apply himself every day.

"He has done it before, but for whatever reason he's not doing it now."

'You have to look at yourself'

Rashford has been with United since the age of seven, made more than 400 appearances, won the Europa League, two FA Cups and two EFL Cups.

Amorim became United manager in November, replacing Erik ten Hag, and the England striker scored in Amorim's first game in charge, a 1-1 away draw at Ipswich on 24 November.

Rashford also scored twice in a 4-0 win over Everton a week later, but was left out of the squad for United's 2-1 victory at Manchester City on 15 December and subsequently told journalist Henry Winter he was "ready for a new challenge".

Ferdinand felt Rashford would have made a public statement if Amorim's latest comments were incorrect.

"For me, if it isn't true, I'm coming out all guns blazing. I'm holding a press conference and saying 'I'm not having anyone say that about me'," said Ferdinand.

"You only do that if you are 100 per cent sure that nobody can say you're taking shortcuts. We're in an era where you have the ability to really communicate with the fans directly so the story is not getting twisted.

"I would love to sit across the table from Marcus and look into his eyes and see if he could say that. If you can't, you have to look at yourself."

Rashford move 'best for all parties' - Meulensteen

Rashford has been linked with a move during the January transfer window and former United first-team coach Rene Meulensteen says the forward should leave.

"If I was Rashford, I would make every means work to see if I could get that transfer over the line, no matter how," said Meulensteen on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"It would be best for all parties and would be good for Rashford to rediscover himself in a new league.

"It's never a good thing to highlight personal issues with a player in public. It does nobody any favours. Not the players, not the manager and not the club."

Rashford has played 60 times for England, including against winners Italy in the final of the European Championship in 2021.

He scored 30 goals in all competitions for Manchester United in 2022-23, but Ferdinand says Rashford will need to prove he can find that form again.

"When is the penny going to drop, that it's nobody else's fault, the only person that can change is me, not a manager, or someone telling me I have to play a certain way," added Ferdinand.

"Then go into training every day with a spring in your step because you're a lucky guy and don't think anyone owes you anything. Go and earn the right to play and earn plaudits."

Sutton says Rashford is in danger of losing the peak years of his career and added: "If he does not move, unless he really gets back in favour and knuckles down, he could be a player that rots for a while and that's no good for anyone."

Amorim and Rashford no longer on speaking terms at Manchester United

Ruben Amorim’s relationship with Marcus Rashford has broken down to the extent that Manchester United’s head coach speaks to the player only when addressing the squad generally.

While Rashford last played for United in mid-December and has since been selected by Amorim in only one match-day squad, when he was an unused substitute, the 27‑year‑old is training with the first team. But Amorim does not have individual discussions with him.

After the 1-0 win at Fulham on Sunday, Amorim said he would prefer to select his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach, Jorge Vital, than a player who does not give his maximum. This was in response to a question about whether Rashford may have a route back into his plans.

“It’s the same situation for every player,” Amorim said. “If you do the maximum, if you do the right things – we can use every player. You can see it today [Sunday] on the bench – we miss a little bit of pace to go, to change the game, to move some pieces, but I prefer [it] like that. I will put Vital [on the bench] before I put a player that doesn’t give the maximum every day so I will not change that.”

Rashford has said previously that he wanted a “new challenge” and he and United are seeking to part ways in this window. However, the forward’s options are dwindling and it remains unclear whether he will leave his boyhood club in the remaining days of the transfer window. While a loan is most likely, Rashford accepts he may still be at United when the window closes and he has not received an offer that appeals to him.

Although Rashford is looking for an exit, another player could be on his way to United. On Tuesday night the club were reportedly closing in on a deal for the Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu. The 20-year-old Denmark international is expected to cost around €30m plus €5m of add-ons.

On Tuesday, meanwhile, Trafford council backed United’s plans to regenerate Old Trafford and its surrounding confines. The centrepiece will be a new 100,000-seat stadium.

Liz Patel, the council’s executive member for economy and regeneration, said: “The Trafford Wharfside masterplan offers a regeneration vision for a hugely important area within Trafford which takes in the world-famous sporting institution that is Manchester United as well as other major sites including the Imperial War Museum and the Manchester Ship Canal. We are now on the lookout for a world-class consultant team to shape the vision for the area.

“This is a hugely exciting project and working with our partners and private developers, we will be looking to create thousands of new homes, new neighbourhoods and help create a world-class setting for the Manchester United stadium. I am delighted that the Trafford Wharfside area is the focus of this important future planning project.”

Man Utd must 'take advantage' of academy sales - Amorim

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says the club must "take advantage" of their academy to help their financial situation.

The Red Devils beat Romanian side FCSB 2-0 in the Europa League on Thursday, with goals from Kobbie Mainoo and Diogo Dalot.

United's second goal came when academy product Alejandro Garnacho set-up Mainoo, who joined the club at the age of nine, to score.

The pair have both been linked with exits from Old Trafford, as selling them would significantly ease United's profit and sustainability outlook.

While not specifically referring to Garnacho or Mainoo, Amorim says one advantage of a thriving academy is that players can be sold to raise funds.

"I want players like Kobbie [Mainoo] and [Alejandro] Garnacho," said Amorim.

"The focus is that we have to improve the academy and we have to bring more [players through].

"That is something that all of the clubs in England have to take advantage [of]. the players that come from the academy.

"To play, to feel the shirt and to sell. Our focus is to bring more, the rest I just want to prepare with both of them the next game."

United told supporters earlier this month that the club are at risk of breaching the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules.

Clubs cannot report losses of more than £105m over a three-year reporting period with facing the threat of punishment.

Under PSR rules, the sale of academy products is registered as 'pure profit' as they are usually signed for nothing or nominal fees.

United have sold academy products such as Dean Henderson, Scott McTominay, Anthony Elanga and James Garner in recent years.

Man Utd defender Malacia joins PSV on loan

Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia has joined PSV Eindhoven on loan until the end of the season.

Malacia, 25, returned to action for the Premier League club in November following 17 months out with injury issues.

The Netherlands international signed for United from Feyenoord for £13m on a four-year contract in July 2022.

Malacia's move comes after Manchester United signed Denmark wing-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce on a five-and-a-half-year deal on Sunday.

Malacia has been restricted to eight appearances in all competitions for United this season since returning from two lots of knee surgery on 28 November.

The first new arrival of former United boss Erik ten Hag's tenure, he has featured 47 times for the Old Trafford club.

Talks with Portuguese club Benfica over a loan move for Malacia broke down earlier in the January transfer window.

PSV are two points above Ajax at the top of the Eredivisie, the top flight in the Netherlands, and face Juventus in the Champions League knockout phase play-off.

My decision not to make more signings - Amorim

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says it was his decision to take the "risk" of not signing more players in the January transfer window.

The Red Devils completed two signings in the window, with left-back Patrick Dorgu, 20, arriving from Italian side Lecce and centre-back Ayden Heaven, 18, signing from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

However, having allowed Marcus Rashford and Antony to leave on loan to Aston Villa and Real Betis respectively, many expected United to bring in at least one player in attack.

Amorim said before the window closed that the club were "trying everything" to strengthen the squad but they failed to make any further additions.

"We are taking a risk but we want a different thing in the team, different profiles. It was my decision to do that," said Amorim.

"What I feel is that the club is taking its time. We know the urgency of the moment of the team (but) everybody here does not want to make the same mistakes of the past.

"In the summer we will see but like I said we are being really careful with transfers because we did some mistakes in the past."

United take on Leicester City (20:00 GMT) at Old Trafford in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday, when Dorgu and and Heaven could make their debuts.

Amorim's side are through to the last 16 of the Europa League but are 13th in the Premier League.

"I'm not naive, I said that many times, this is a sport of results and we are in a difficult situation," said Amorim.

"I know when I choose this profession that you have the risk of results and I knew when I came here I look at the schedule, I look at the team, my decision changing everything in the middle of the season without new signings is a danger for a coach, but I have a clear idea of what I want to do and I take these risks because in the end it's going to pay off."

Cruciate knee ligament injury for Man Utd's Martinez

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his knee which is set to rule the centre-back out for the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old was taken off on a stretcher late on during the home defeat by Crystal Palace on Sunday with an issue United boss Ruben Amorim described at the time as a "serious situation".

"Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the appropriate course of treatment and the timescale for his rehabilitation," Manchester United said on Thursday.

"Everyone at Manchester United wishes Lisandro Martinez strength for a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way."

Martinez's absence will be a blow for Amorim as he tries to improve the fortunes of the Old Trafford side.

United are 13th in the Premier League after the defeat by Palace, which was the club's seventh loss in 13 home games this season.

"Licha [Martinez] is a difficult situation," said Amorim, speaking before his side's FA Cup fourth-round tie at home against Leicester City on Friday.

"He's going to be out for a while. We don't know the extent of the injury but it's an injury that's going to take time."

The news comes at a time when there are renewed doubts over the fitness of left-back Luke Shaw, who has not started a game for United in almost 12 months.

"Luke has one small issue in a different area from the last injury, so we try to be careful with Luke," added Amorim.
