Took Australia from 6/67 to 280 chasing 287. Incredible. Unfortunate to fall short because of Hazlewood and Starc's stupidity.

One of the all time great ODI innings.

This was a Bevanesque bit of match saving.

He was in absolute control. Not even Kohli has controlled a chase so absolutely. This guy was commanding established players and telling them to sit their butts down quietly on the other end. He shepherded the tail beautifully....then Hazlewood blows it.

And Starc too.

Added 84 runs for the last 2 wickets in 6 overs!!

Starc faced 3 balls out of those and Hazlewood none.

Amazing knock.

already looking like an hussey replacement for me !!!!! ohh and yess way batter bowler and batsman then overrated Mitchell marsh

unbelievable, amazing. what a knock this was!
truely ine of the best innings ever

Stoinis looks like a tail ender each time he comes out to bat for Victoria.

This innings is a mere miracle.

Don't expect such an innings from a player of his calibre again.

Despite my wrist-slitting, I'm happy to have witnessed one of the ATG ODI knocks.

This is what's called ability to soak up pressure.

Amazing knock.

I was blown away by his innings checking the commentary on cricinfo. ATG knock no doubt.

Very similar to this knock by Bevan where he almost chased down an impossible total and the game would have been tied if only the other bat had the basic sense to ground his bat after reaching the crease.

Total garbage that will never fire like that lucky knock again.
One of the worst bits and pieces players that is lucky to get selected.
Expect only NZ would let him get this type of performance.

Wow! Never got a chance to watch a lot of Bevan, but after watching that I understand why he is considered the greatest chaser of all time.

Stonis played a truly masterful knock. The last partnership was of 50 runs with Hazelwood having played 0 balls. That is a perfect chase. In the end he was let down by Starc and Hazelwood.

Amazing effort. Pretty unlucky not to win as tailender were poor.

That was one of the rare knocks where he scored super fast.

But he was an absolute beast in ODIs. No matter where he played or against who he played, he scored. Getting him out was a huge project in itself.

Batted in 4 WC knockout games and played 2 iconic knocks.

No other player gave me the dread that Bevan used to give. Torture at its best as he slowly but surely took the game away from you.

Today Stonis was playing an absolute blinder but sadly Hazlewood choked just like Donald did.

Thank you for sharing! Will definitely be checking out some more of his other knocks after seeing that one.

I remember watching that match live. Absolutely incredible innings that was.

thanks for info I am keeping my hopes low now :smith

This must have been one hell of a hundred. I had Stoinis down as the Australian Farhaan Behardien, clearly that is not the case!

It was a great knock , irrespective of if he can replicate or not, even in the end he didn't get out.

Did not watch the match but it validates the impression that both NZ and Aus are an ordinary team more so in tests than in ODI's, where a couple of heave ho's in small grounds make for an interesting viewing nothing more than that.

TBH this was a glorified exhibition match. The players were not even trying hard. These kinds of matches ,the organisers want it to be close. As much as I rate Bevan ,I don't rate this knock.

Coming to this match, I have a feeling that it is an exception rather than a norm. These kind of innings happen here n there. I remember Yousuf Path an scoring a hundred in SA while India were almost dead.

Dang missed it. Stoinis of all ppl who would have thought :))

Might catch the highlights.

ive seen him in IPL i think so must be upto something

Damn. I stopped following the game when Aussies were 5 down. Wish I'd watched it

what a match! Run out though to end it man Australia will feel like they should have won run outs are avoidable. Don't like Australia though so well done NZ

Brilliant and clean hitting. Loved the way he was staying calm even though he was hitting them out of the ground for fun.

Poor fielding and Australia top order cost them the game.

Total garbage that will never fire like that lucky knock again.

Expect only NZ would let him get this type of performance.

Pakistan would have let him do it too had he been in the side in the recent 5 match series.

When Australia were around 100/6 and the required run rate was flirting with 9 I thought to myself "I think they will get close somewhere around 260 because this is Australia they never give up". On that thought, I hit the hay and when I woke up MY GOD they nearly pulled it off. Amazing display off never-say-die attitude.

Watched the highlights great inngs.....williamson's captaincy under pressure was equally good,he had some cricketing brain under the nerve in that final over

Did not watch it live so don't know whether he has really turned it around as a batsman or played a fluke innings.

To those who didn't watch it live...

What the scorecard doesn't show is Stoini's body language. This guy was pumped and intense. He looked in total control, believed completely in a win, looked like he had everything figured out, and was so confident in his big hitting abilities, he was turning down easy singles just to protect the batsmen on the other end.

Once he crossed 60, the guy looked invincible and full of belief.

I only caught the last 10 mins or so but jeeez this guy was in complete control of situation ... I don't think anyone in NZ would have begrudged if Aus had won. Sensational knock.

Good then will follow his batting for a while from now. IPL is also there.

Poor captaincy n poor bowling
Should have gone for kill when had them at 67/6
Time to sack captain.

Posts on PP if this was against Pak

Guess we are stuck with him for another twenty odd matches.

Funny though.

Unlikely to do this again but has put the fear of the Lord in NZ hearts.

Just saw the highlights, wow that was clean hitting. Not just that, the 6s were massive.

Almost won the match on his own.

Pakistan fans would have been dishing out sweets to find such a player, who bowled decently as well lets remember.

He deserves a 20 match run for that knock alone.

Yeah but it will never happen again.

Have watched him in the IPL.

Used to be inconsistent but played some good knocks from time to time with the bat. Decent bowler.

Never expected this though.

if he were paksitani he would be a regular for the next ten years..he would already have teeny bopper fans who would support him no matter what..and we would have started a support thread in his honour!!

He's flopped big time in the Sheffield Shield this season, yet picked for the test squad.

It remains to be seen whether he can repeat his heroics in NZ.

He has done well again 60 runs in 40 balls

Marcus Stoinis has escaped with a fine following a homophobic slur directed at Kane Richardson in the Melbourne Derby in the Big Bash.

But some are not happy with the punishment.

After foxsports.com.au broke the story of Stoinis’ slur, the batsman released a statement expressing his regret and offering his apologies.

“I got caught in the moment and took it too far,” he said on Sunday.

“I realised immediately I was in the wrong and I apologise to Kane and to the umpires. I did the wrong thing and accept responsibility for my actions.

“The standards are there for a reason and I accept the penalty.”

Stoinis was hit with a level two charge, and handed a $7,500 fine.

But while James Pattinson missed the Gabba Test for what was his third offence, Stoinis has escaped with just a fine given it was just his first indiscretion.

It has led to former Australian Test star Simon Katich suggesting that the sport must come down harder on such slurs, especially in the Big Bash.

“I’m not sure a financial punishment is the right way of going about it,” said Katich on Sen1116.

“Given that we’ve had a couple of incidents of this throughout the summer.

James Pattinson obviously had a prior record and got suspended [for a Test], that probably counted for a fair bit having the prior record.

“It’s something that I think they’d be pretty keen to stamp out and I’m not sure a financial penalty in this day and age when the players are very well looked after is that significant. If you really want to plant your flag – especially in the BBL – and we’ve heard Kevin Roberts talk about how family-friendly that is, how they won’t take a gambling sponsor as a result. Plant your flag [and say] this doesn't match.”

A sports diversity expert who led a Cricket Australia-commissioned report into LGBTIQ inclusion wants mandatory bans for players who make homophobic remarks after Marcus Stoinis avoided suspension despite calling Kane Richardson a "******" during the Melbourne Big Bash League derby on Saturday night.

An apologetic Stoinis became the second high-profile player found guilty of making a homophobic remark this season after umpires Gerard Abood and Phillip Gillespie cited him for a slur uttered while Stoinis was batting his Melbourne Stars to victory against Richardson's Renegades at the MCG.

While paceman James Pattinson was suspended for a Test in November on the back of his third CA code of conduct breach in 18 months, Stoinis' previously clean record spared him from a ban.

Instead, the axed Australian all-rounder has been fined $7500 for a level two breach of the code.

But the penalty was too lenient according to Dr Ryan Storr, a Western Sydney University academic who has spearheaded several research projects in cricket including a 2017 report on LGBTIQ inclusion prepared for CA and Cricket Victoria.

"Unless there are repercussions for people saying homophobic remarks, we're not going to get rid of them," Dr Storr told The Age and Sydney Morning Herald.

"Within the research I did, it showed that even at grassroots level it's still common to hear homophobic remarks.

"Across Australian sport, it's a bit all over the place, a bit inconsistent. Sometimes you get away with it, sometimes you get a three-match ban, sometimes you get a seven K fine. There's too much inconsistency and you need something a bit more solid to really show that it's not acceptable.

"Why any player would make those comments, especially in light of Israel Folau and the way that's going, you just know that's not acceptable."

Dr Storr said that while CA had taken many positive steps towards improving their inclusion policies, he suggested the Pattinson and Stoinis incidents - as well as the Instagram post last year in which former Australian player James Faulkner appeared to come out as gay only to later label it a misunderstanding - showed that work still needed to be done.

"It's disappointing when you kind of hear about these incidents because it kind of sometimes overshadows the work that has been done, especially around anti-homophobia policies and the recent trans and gender diversity policy and things like that," Dr Storr said.

Speaking on SEN on Sunday, former Australian batsman Simon Katich queried whether a fine was enough of a deterrent for Stoinis.

"I'm not sure a financial punishment is the right way of going about it, given we've had a couple of instances of this throughout the summer now. It's something they'd be keen to stamp out. I'm not sure a financial penalty is that significant," Katich said.

Former Australian women's World Cup-winning captain Alex Blackwell, who is openly gay, said such slurs were "not on" but believes CA acted appropriately in its sanctioning of Stoinis.

"The code of conduct is there for a reason. Both players have shown immediate remorse for what they did and the consistent application of the code ... it's good to see that it's happening," she said.

Blackwell added that it wasn't "just because I'm gay" that she condemned the comments. "Other players might have an opinion on this as well," she said. "You don't have to be gay to think that it's unacceptable. It's just like racism. It's good to see the sport making a very strong stance that it's not acceptable in cricket."

CA issued a statement on Sunday, confirming that the umpires reported the breach to match referee Daryl Harper.

"The behaviour in this matter falls short of the standards we expect and we have acted accordingly," CA integrity chief Sean Carroll said.

"There is no place for it in the game."

Stoinis accepted he had erred.

"I got caught in the moment and took it too far," Stoinis said.

"I realised immediately I was in the wrong and I apologise to Kane and to the umpires.

"I did the wrong thing and accept responsibility for my actions. The standards are there for a reason and I accept the penalty."

Pattinson was suspended following a homophobic slur delivered towards Queensland's Cameron Gannon during a Sheffield Shield match at the MCG. Industry sources confirmed Pattinson and Stoinis had made the same remarks to their respective opponents.

While friendly away from the field, Australian World Cup teammates Richardson and Stoinis have had a long-running battle on the pitch - with Richardson having imitated Stoinis' 'hulk' celebration during a match 12 months ago.

Marcus Stoinis has been named the 2019-20 KFC Big Bash League Player of the Tournament.

The award, voted by the umpires after each of the 56 regular season matches, comes after Stoinis became just the second player to pass 600 runs in a KFC BBL season.

The Melbourne Stars opening batsman’s most memorable moment came on January 12 at the MCG when he smashed 147 not out against the Sydney Sixers, setting a record for the highest individual score in League history.

His individual milestone came in a 207-run opening stand with Hilton Cartwright, another League record.

Stoinis finished top of the count on 26 votes, two clear of Sydney Sixers all-rounder Tom Curran and a further vote ahead of third-placed Alex Hales from the Sydney Thunder.

“I’m honoured to have been voted as the 2019-20 KFC Big Bash League Player of the Tournament,” Stoinis said.

“I love playing for the Melbourne Stars. This team is special to me and I love having the opportunity to run out onto the field with them.

“We’ve got a big match against the Sydney Thunder on Thursday night and I hope to see our Team Green fans at the MCG to help get us over the line.”

Two matches remain in KFC BBL|09, with The Challenger between the Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder this Thursday, February 6, to determine the Sydney Sixers’ opponent in The Final on Saturday, February 8.

Marcus Stoinis | Player of the Match: (38 off 27 & 3/26 off 3 overs) in DC v SRH IPL 2020

Have done it in the BBL for a couple of seasons (opening the batting) so it was nice to get an opportunity. Never know what it's going to be like early. There was swing early on. So had a bit of a look at it before having a crack. Have played quite a bit of IPL, but this is my first final. It's been hard with quarantine but a bit of silverware is good motivation. MI are a very good team. Have played consistently. But they're due an off game. Our best cricket should be good enough to win. Was a really nice wicket. My thought process was to change my grips and see what I was getting out of the wicket and change my tactics with wide yorkers and slower balls.

Marcus Stoinis hopes less will not mean more for Virat Kohli when the India captain's Australian summer cameo begins at the SCG on Friday.

The world's No.1-ranked ODI batsman will lead the tourists in three 50-over clashes before a three-game Dettol T20 series is followed by four Tests.

But Kohli, ranked second in the world behind Steve Smith in the longest format, will head home to attend the birth of his child after the first Vodafone Test in Adelaide.

Australia allrounder Stoinis laughed off suggestions that the run machine would be feeling any extra motivation to make a mark before he departs.

"Don't worry about Virat; he's up for every single game that he's playing," Stoinis said on Saturday.

"I don't think you can get any extra motivation than 110 per cent ... he'll be ready to go.

"We've got our strategies (against him), had things that have worked in the past, but other times the plans haven't worked and he's made some runs ... hopefully things land on our side of the court (this summer)."

Stoinis himself is feeling confident after a successful IPL stint under coach Ricky Ponting – who is now in Australia's camp assisting Justin Langer – saw him propel the Delhi Capitals to the decider.

The 31-year-old made 352 runs at a strike rate of 148 and took 13 wickets during the campaign, with Ponting promoting him to open the batting in the latter stages of the tournament.

"I'm a massive fan of his; he's mentored me, he's a good man, means a lot to me and his help was vital," Stoinis said of the former Australia captain.

"He's so generous with his time; throwing balls from the start of session until the end, then probably has a few anti-inflammatories and goes to bed for the rest of the day.

"The confidence he instils, the way he teaches you, he's as good as you'll get.

"I don't think he's in the business of changing careers but like all those good coaches you don't really know you're being coached until you look back and realise (what he did was) bloody important."

With Steve Smith (concussion) missing from Australia's last ODI series in England it was Stoinis who was promoted to bat three.

He said Ponting had been one factor in "a big sort of pool of events" that led to more opportunities at the top of the order.

"Punter's a big believer in me and wants to give me responsibility in the teams that he's been in charge of, but I've got to be adaptable," he said.

"I'm just happy to be involved wherever they feel I can have my biggest impact in the game.

"Whether that's at the top or the middle ... and I've had these conversations with Ricky and said 'just let me know and I'll put the pads on'."

Most chilled out player. No stress

But one heck of a brute!

WOW.

Pakistan could do with a player like this.

Sohaib Malik in 2021 vs Scotland , 18 balls
Umar Akmal in 2010 vs Australia, Egbaston 21 balls

One of the Aussie commentators said he’s nicknamed Hulk by his team mates because of his affinity for power lifting.

Him and Hardik are the best pace allrounders for t20s. Stokes is a fair distance behind for now.

But this guy announced his quality batsmanship whenever he performed that rescue mission and scored 146* in that ODI match vs NZ.

Best pace ARs rn:

Hardik
Stoinis
Stokes / Holder

Marcus Stoinis breaks David Warner's record, joins Yuvraj Singh in elite list during AUS vs SL T20 World Cup tie

Making a mockery of Sri Lanka's bowling attack in match No. 19 of the ICC World T20 2022 on Monday, all-rounder Marcus Stoinis fashioned Australia's impressive win over the Islanders by slamming a record-breaking half-century for the defending champions. While Aaron Finch struggled to get going and ended up playing a patient knock, Stoinis launched an all-out attack on Sri Lanka to save the blushes of the Australian skipper at the Perth Stadium.

Playing a blinder of a knock against the Islanders at the grandest stages of them all, power-hitter Stoinis turned the tie on its head by smashing a quick-fire half-century. Stoinis shattered David Warner's record by notching up the fastest half-century for Australia in the shortest format of the game at the World Cup. The Australian middle-order batter surpassed his teammate Warner by scoring the record-setting half-century in just 17 balls.

Veteran Australian opener Warner had slammed his fastest half-century in 18 balls against the West Indies in 2010 at Sydney. Stoinis' explosive half-century is also the second fastest half-century in the history of the T20 World Cup.

Stoinis and Stephan Myburgh have smashed the joint-fastest half-century (by balls faced) at the T20 World Cup. Myburgh and Stoinis slammed their respective half-centuries in 17 balls. Legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh famously scored the fastest half-century in the shortest format at the 2007 World Cup. Yuvraj had achieved the historic feat in just 12 balls against England at Durban.

Talking about the 19th match of the Super 12 Group 1 stage between Australia and Sri Lanka, Finch & Co. chased down the challenging total of 157 in 16.3 overs. Stoinis remained unbeaten on 59 off 18 balls while Finch scored 31* off 42 balls to secure Australia's 7-wicket win over the Islanders at the Perth Stadium on Sunday. Stoinis was named the Player of the Match for his batting heroics against Sri Lanka.

"Ronnie (Andrew McDonald) actually said to have a look at the quicks as it was doing a bit and I feel comfortable, then to have a go at the spinners. Once I got in, the plan was to keep going. To be honest, I was really nervous today being at home in Perth, lot of family and friends here. So, I was really nervous going into it, but really happy that we ended on putting up a clinic there," Stoinis said after the match.

All-rounder Marcus Stoinis on Tuesday became the fastest Australian to score a half-century in the T20Is. Stoinis achieved this feat during the Super 12 clash of the ongoing T20 World Cup against Sri Lanka, at Perth Stadium, where he took only 17 balls to reach the 50-run mark. Chasing 158, Australia started off on a steady note but Stoinis' arrival completely changed the game and took the team across the line in just 16.3 overs and seven wickets in hand. Stoinis broke the record of David Warner and Glenn Maxwell, who had earlier scored half-centuries in 18 balls, to score the fastest fifty by an Australian in T20Is.

Apart from this, Stoinis also became the third fastest player to score a half-century in a T20 World Cup. The list is led by former India batter Yuvraj Singh, who had smashed a fifty off 12 balls against England during the 2007 T20 World Cup, followed by Netherlands' Stephan Myburgh in 17 balls against Ireland in 2014.

Stoinis credits IPL for improved game

Wanindu Hasaranga conceded his most runs in a T20I (3-0-53-0) should tell you the damage that Stoinis inflicted. The all-rounder credited the IPL for his improved skills against spin.

...The IPL has changed my cricket and helped me evolve. And it's not only playing on the wickets, it's having the coaches from all over the world, having players from different countries.

Stoinis credits IPL stint for improved spin game

One of the highlights of Marcus Stoinis' blitzkrieg during his record-breaking half-century against Sri Lanka was how he took down his unfavourable spin matchups in ruthless fashion. Both Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana were taken to the cleaners in a brutal assault. Stoinis, historically a slow starter and tentative against spin, credited his transformation to his stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

"Yeah, definitely the IPL has changed my cricket and helped me evolve," said Stoinis in the post-match press conference on Tuesday (October 25). "And it's not only playing on the wickets, it's having the coaches from all over the world, having players from different countries. I've played for quite a few years in the IPL and quite a few teams, so you come across a range of techniques and mentalities about how to play spin. Yeah, it has helped me improve for sure."

His ODI record is pretty mediocre at the moment. But in T20Is, he is doing a good job as all rounder.

Stoinis, Maxwell, Marsha and Green - plenty of all rounders there for Australia. Marsh for me is the weakest of the four, surprisingly he has got a WT20 final knock to his name in a winning cause.

He's improved a lot to become a middle order batter. Bowling wise he's still in Scott Styris - Paul Collingwood category.

Stoinis with a monstrous 89*(47)

Given the discussion in the lead up to the last game around Marnus and Stoinis, is there any scope, potentially that if it is more a batting friendly wicket that you could be tempted into going with the extra all-rounder?

[Pat Cummins:]

Potentially yeah, those are things we weigh up before every game. We're lucky, we've got a 15-man squad who we feel anyone can step in and perform. They're all ready to go. So, like every other game, we go through a process where coaches get together and chat through what they think or how they think the game's going to go about and then the selectors obviously pick the final 11.

Did anyone notice Stoinis ignoring Jay and Sachin when collecting his medal? 🤣

Absolutely no care whatsoever. Its as if he was trying to say "I am a world champion so why should I shake the hands of these clowns?"

Glad he was not part of the final xi which won.

He in a live match while facing M Hasnain accused him of chucking by showing throwing signs, and got away with it. Such actions demoralize a young fast bowler. At that time Hasnain was not reported yet in the bigbash.

Shameful individual.

One of the worst cricketer around. Glad he wasn't picked by Australia

In ODIs, he's still bits and pieces. Hyped too much without having shown much substance.
Labu's consistent preference over him in the wc proved correct.

Marcus Stoinis has been dropped from Australia's central contract list for 2024–25. I guess this is the end of his international career.
