THE Board of Directors of Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Friday accepted with regret national coach Gary Kirsten’s decision not to renew his contract.

Kirsten was appointed from the beginning of August 2011 for a two-year period with an option to renew it for a further two years. His contract required him to inform the Board by April 30 2013 whether he wished to exercise that option.

He has informed the Board that he will not be renewing his contract for family reasons.

“Gary has a young family and it is understandable that he wishes to spend more time at home,” commented CSA President and Board chairman Chris Nenzani. “I would like to thank him for his tremendous contribution to the well being of the Proteas over the past two years. It is obvious to all of us, whether we have been close to the Proteas or simply fans watching from the stands, the standard of excellence that he has brought to our national team and it will be wonderful if he can complete his tenure by bringing home the ICC Champions Trophy next month.

“With the Proteas due to tour Sri Lanka in July and August and Pakistan in November and important home series coming up against India and Australia next season it is important that we move quickly to identify his successor. The Board will be following due process as far as this is concerned.

“Once that process has been decided we will call a full Media briefing.

“Gary certainly leaves the Proteas in good health and, although we are disappointed to lose him as head coach, he has put the foundations in place to carry us forward.

“We will certainly endeavour to retain his services in some capacity as his experience as player, coach and mentor is not something we want to lose in its entirety.”

Gary Kirsten commented: “I would like to thank Cricket South Africa for the confidence they showed in entrusting me with the fortunes of the national team. It has been a huge privilege to represent my country as player and coach and to have been given the responsibility of growing the team.

“I would particularly like to thank Cricket South Africa for allowing me the flexibility to combine my coaching job with my family life during my tenure.

“There have been many highlights over the past two years which have been well documented and I have every confidence that the Proteas will continue to go from strength to strength.”

Leaves them in tatters for the WC, its going to be difficult for the new coach to pick up from where Kirsten left off and implement what he wants to in less than 2 years.

This guy's strategy is fail-proof. Leave when the going is good, leave the dirty work to the Fletchers of this world, I like that.

He hasn't made a difference to the ODI team so don't really see your point.

I think under his reign they became number 1 in both formats for the first time, correct me if I'm wrong I'm not 100% sure.

Not sure but don't think they were number 1 in ODI's but besides rankings their ODI team just isn't that good.

Now that just isn't true, just because they choke in ICC events doesn't necessarily make them a bad team, in fact I'd go as far as to say they have the best ODI (arguable) and test (indisputable) teams currently. It wasn't too long ago that they beat Pakistan in a ODI series and gave NZ a tough time.

The world remembers you more when you leave while you are on top.

Yep, and he's exploiting that notion to the fullest. Probably should head to England and coach them next, in an ideal world.

Gave a tough time to New Zealand? Such a badge of honour doesn't exist unfortunately, they lost to them at home full stop.

They aren't the "best" ODI team by a notch or two.

BCCI - grab him if he's available. If he wants to spend more time with his family, offer to move the family to India!

And fire that idiot Fletcher pronto.

Some people forget quickly how convincingly they beat us at home. Who do you think is better than them? India - Nope, England - Nope, NZ - Nope, SL - Nope, Pakistan - Nope, Australia - Nope.

Gary cited the same reasons while opting not to renew his contract with India. Wonder where he's heading next:wasim

He isn't anything special.

Just at the right place at the right time, everywhere and everytime.

The statistics will look good at the end of the day though.

That is a very selfish approach.

When you are on top, you need to be out there helping the team rather sit at home and bask in glory.

Retire only when you are finished.

Wishful thinking that. Don't really see it happening.

IIRC, BCCI renewed Fletcher's contract sometime when the Aussies came here recently.

If Mickey loses both ashes, he's as good as gone.

Depends how they are lost.

Nobody in Australia seriously expects us to win- but if we don't put up a fight there will be a clearout.

Even if they put up a fight I don't see him staying unless they win, I can see the media really running a number on the team if they lose.

If Mickey acts like a prat and fires half his team for not completing their homework again, it won't even take a couple of Ashes defeats to get to that point.

Australia needs to keep Mickey, we don't want him back. Wonder who the replacement options will be...

How about Donald

He's a super bowling coach, but I'm not sure about him being head coach. Need someone who's a calming influence and allows the players to be themselves. Surprisingly, Paul Adams seems to have done a great job with the Cape Cobras, so he might be a possible candidate.

Jonty seems like a chilled out bloke. I feel he'll make out to be a great coach one day.

agreed...and tbh england is best ODi team if u ask me

There is no "best" ODI team at the moment. Everyone sucks equally bad.

yup. ..Donald also didn't have luck with PW

england is very balanced
- good batting power
- good pace attack
- good spin attack eg swann and Treadwell

other team have atleast one of key missing

Looks ok on paper, but on the field they don't perform any better than anyone else. They drew the series at home to SA last year, and lost away to India.

Point is that these days, any team can beat any other team on the day - there is no clear "best" team.

Giving NZ a tough time in ODI? That is never considered a benchmark for judging a ODI team. It does not gets you any brownie points. First time I have heard such logic.

The world remembers you more when you leave while you are on top.

I think player should retire when they no longer feel the passion for game or they are not able to contribute better than others. A team losing their best contributors is bad for the team.

Agreed, where as there is a notable difference in quality is test matches where SA are way ahead of the rest. England are also very good and have a very balanced team.

CSA will announce the new coach at 10.30 am in the morning local time.

Merwe just confirmed it'll be SA's current Assistant coach, Russell Domingo who'll replace Gary. Fair enough decision, he's been with Gary and the team since couple of years.

we are the world champion. We are the best.

We suck but we are the best among the suckers. ;-)

Uptil 2011 I'd agree but since then we've been very inconsistent. CB/Asia cup early exit, Lost away ODI series to Eng and for the first time in many years at home to Pak.

I think there's not much difference between SA-Eng-Ind-Pak atm. No one is better than the other.

The next coach of Pune Warriors

I think he will join Mumbai Indians next year and will win the IPL trophy for them in next year, followed by immediate resignation to spend time with Family:asif

SA are the only team I see being competitive in any series around the world, that's why I consider them the best.

Come back Guru Gary! All is forgiven.

I wouldn't mind Fleming for the world cup either.

CSA APPOINTS RUSSELL DOMINGO AS PROTEAS’ HEAD COACH

Saturday, 11 May 2013

CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) on Saturday announced current assistant coach Russell Domingo as the new head coach of the Proteas in all three formats of the game.

He succeeds Gary Kirsten who will stand down after the Proteas’ campaign at the ICC Champions Trophy Tournament in England and Wales next month. Domingo already has responsibility for coaching the Proteas Blue Label Telecoms T20 International squad.

Domingo, 38, is one of the youngest persons to become head coach of the Proteas but he has already built up an impressive CV of experience. As franchise coach he led the Chevrolet Warriors to the domestic limited overs double and it was during his franchise coaching career that he employed Kirsten as a batting consultant.

His first assignment will be when the Proteas travel to Sri Lanka in July for five ODI’s and three T20 International matches.

“We have no doubt that Russell will do an excellent job,” commented CSA President and Board of Directors chairman Chris Nenzani. “He has built up an excellent career record over a short period of time and he has played an important part in the success that Gary has achieved for us over the past two years.

“Continuity is very important both in terms of player selection and the management team and this will enable us to have a seamless transition from one coach to another.

“Russell inherits a world-class group of players who have performed consistently at the highest level and he will continue to build the Proteas as a world-class brand.”

Russell Domingo commented: “This is a very big day in my life. It has to be the highlight in anybody’s coaching career to be given the honour and responsibility of being put in charge of your national side.

“I feel it has come at the right stage of my coaching career, having spent the last two years working with Gary.

“I would like to thank the Board of Cricket South Africa for the faith they have shown in me and also the many people who have helped me to live my coaching dream.”

Mark Boucher appointed as Head Coach of South Africa

CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) today announced the appointment of Mark Boucher as head coach of the Standard Bank Proteas and Enoch Nkwe as assistant coach at a well-attended Media Briefing at Newlands.

It was Acting Director of Cricket Graeme Smith’s first opportunity to engage with the media and he also outlined the timeline for the next week as the Proteas begin their preparation for the Test series against England starting on Boxing Day at SuperSport Park.

In other appointments Linda Zondi resumes the position of convener of the National Selection Panel (NSP), Faf du Plessis was confirmed as Proteas Test match captain and Ashwell Prince will take charge of the South Africa A side for their upcoming tour match against England.

“I have brought Boucher on board because I feel he will bring the toughness to turn a young and inexperienced Proteas squad into a battle-ready outfit. With his experience of a long career as an international cricketer he has first hand experience of what it takes to succeed in the Test arena,” commented Smith.

“I have the highest regard for Enoch as well and I want to create a clear path for him to grow into a top international coach.

“At the same time there is a clear need to maintain continuity and stability in the Proteas management team and we will be retaining the technical support staff along with Volvo Masubelele continuing as team manager and Justin Ontong as fielding coach.

“I will be appointing batting and bowling consultants, and these will be announced in the next couple of days,” added Smith.

Boucher and Nkwe both attended the Media Briefing but Du Plessis was given leave of absence. “It is only fair that Faf focuses his attention on the MSL Final on Monday so the Media will have their opportunity to engage with him after Monday evening’s Final,” explained Smith.

He also outlined the Proteas plans for the next week as the build-up to the international season begins.

“We will be announcing both the Proteas Test squad and the South Africa A squad to play England on Monday. The Test squad will then go into immediate camp to prepare for the Test series and some of them will be included in the South Africa A team. Aiden Markram is likely to be the only player released for franchise duty in the 4-day series as he is in need of match practice after his lengthy injury-enforced absence.

“As far as my vision for the future is concerned, we need to rewind to performance excellence and that will be the focus going forward. Our public want and demand a world-class Proteas side and we must deliver on that.

“As far as my own future is concerned, I face a very busy and at times hectic three months and I am not going to look further ahead than that. I am sure everybody will understand that.

“Because of the time frame the Proteas Test squad is my most immediate concern and we will be rolling out plans for the Proteas Women and the under-19s, who both face important ICC global events next year, in the immediate future,” concluded Smith.

Cricket South Africa will have to break the bank to afford these quality appointments, a big challenge for a board facing $44 million in debts all because of a botched T20 League launch

From the outside this looks very suspicious. Biff is appointed director and his first action is to appoint his friend as head coach. Then again, we all know Boucher is quite capable and will probably make a decent coach.

Maybe he appointed him not because he’s his friend but because he believes he is the best candidate?

Boucher was a tough competitor during his playing days. He will not tolerate any nonsense and will be a tough task master.

He wasn't a trail blazer like Gilchrist or Dhoni but he was a very reliable keeper and lower order batsman for them. Wishing him luck

Jacques Kallis has been named South Africa’s batting consultant for the summer, Cricket South Africa stated on Wednesday, 18 December.

Kallis, one of the foremost all-rounders in the sport’s history, scored 25,534 runs and picked 577 wickets in 519 internationals for South Africa. He will be the latest former player in South Africa’s new set up, after the appointment of Mark Boucher as head coach and former captain Graeme Smith as acting director of cricket.

The 44-year-old will be part of South Africa’s set up for the duration of the visit of England, and will join the rest of the squad in Pretoria today. England's tour will comprise four Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is, with the series beginning with the first Test on Boxing Day at The Centurion.

Meanwhile, Charl Langeveldt has left his position as Bangladesh fast-bowling coach on the request of CSA, and is expected to take up a role with Boucher’s coaching team.

“I can confirm that we have received a formal request for his release,” said Nizam Uddin Chowdhury, the BCB CEO. “We value our strong cricketing relationship with CSA. We have also taken into consideration that he was a South African international cricketer, and we understand his reasons for wanting to work with his own team. The Board has decided to release him with immediate effect.”

Charl Langeveldt confirmed as Proteas bowling consultant

Wednesday, 18 December 2019

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is pleased to confirm the return of former Standard Bank Proteas bowler, Charl Langeveldt as bowling consultant to the national men’s team this summer. He will join the squad in camp as quickly as can be arranged.

He resumes the bowling coaching role that he played for South Africa from 2015 to 2017 before consulting for Afghanistan and settling in Bangladesh under Russell Domingo.

“I would like to thank the Bangladesh Cricket Board and their Chief Executive Officer, Nizam Uddin Chowdhury, for their understanding in releasing Charl Langeveldt from his contract and allowing him to return home to take up the position of bowling consultant with the Standard Bank Proteas,” commented CSA Acting Chief Executive Dr. Jacques Faul.
