Mark Wood - Performance Watch

A 156.2kph bouncer was his fastest ball. 96.4mph. Unreal. He is probably our fastest bowler ever. Even Steve Harmison in his pomp did not reach these speeds I don’t think.
Unless I am missing someone, I believe Mark Wood is the fastest bowler in cricket currently based on today's bowling.

He will be crucial in the ashes. That is if he can play 3 out of the 5 tests without getting injured.

England pacer Mark Wood has hinted at making his return to the Indian Premier League (IPL). Wood, who represented Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2018, has confirmed that he has registered his name for the mega auction. Though he is yet to confirm his participation in the tournament.

"I am in the auction at the minute. At the minute I’ll be in it. If I look ahead to the World Cup and I can learn something in the IPL, if I can put myself in pressure situations and try and get better for the end of the year, that’ll be good," Wood was quoted as saying by mirror.co.uk.

“It’s just whether the time away from home, the bubbles…I’ve done Australia without my son which has been quite hard. Especially around Christmas. So I’ll have to see how the family situation is."

Wood is yet to play a complete season of IPL. In 2018, he only played 1 game for the Yellow Army after being picked by the team for Rs 2 crore. He withdrew from the season early to prepare for the Test series against Pakistan.

He made his return to the IPL auction for the previous season but pulled out his name a day before the auction. Wood is currently part of the England Test team for the Ashes series in Australia and it remains to be seen if he confirms his participation.

Apart from Wood, Joe Root has also hinted at taking part in the tournament. The England Test captain had entered the IPL 2018 auction but went unsold. He hasn't entered an IPL auction since then.

The IPL 2022 auction is likely to take place on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. The list of the players who will be up for grabs in the auction will be released after the Lucknow-based IPL team and Ahmedabad-based IPL team announce their 3 picks.

He’s not tall enough for these new style Aussie decks. Sniffy bouncers don’t work there. Broad and Robinson are the right height and are getting wickets.

Poor bowling from Mark today. A rare bad day on the field for him. Couldn’t find the right lengths and got taken to the cleaners.

Hes been on bowler to look decent all time in Aus, so the off day should be seen just as that

People had big expectations from Wood because he is genuinely quick. He is one of those unlucky bowlers who doesn’t pick up wickets even when he bowls well

Yes, he gets a pass, but needs to learn from this experience because he played a large role in England throwing away a strong position today.

A majestic display from Mark in the second innings, 6-37 off 16.3 overs!

well deserved 6 wickets in 2nd inns. bowled with great pace all series and used the short ball so well today. only england player who can leave this Australian tour with his head held high.

Told you it was just a bad day for him, he was excellent in 2nd inns. Indeed 1 poor session with ball has cost england in the end.

Broad can be proud also.

I don't think there has been a bowler as exciting as him since Shoaibs retirement. Perhaps Mitchell Johnson when he came back with the moustache and bounced out England.

There has been a real dearth of express fast bowlers in recent test cricket and it was great to see the Aussie batsmen hopping and jumping about when confronted with some real heat.

He might not have the best statistics but I'll always try and tune in when he is bowling or find highlights of his spell.

IPL: Mark Wood bought for £734,000 by Lucknow Super Giants at auction

England fast bowler Mark Wood was bought for £734,000 by new franchise Lucknow Super Giants on day one of the Indian Premier League auction.

Wood, 32, withdrew from last year's auction to spend more time with his family.

England batter Jason Roy was bought by Gujarat Titans, the other new franchise, for £196,000, while Jonny Bairstow cost Punjab Kings £660,500.

India's Ishan Kishan was the most expensive player bought on day one.

The 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter was bought back by Mumbai Indians for £1.5m, making him the second-most expensive Indian player in IPL history, after former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh.

He is also the fourth-most expensive player overall, judged on their price in Indian rupees, after former South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris, Yuvraj and Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins.

Durham's Wood has only played one IPL game before, in 2018 for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), but is expected to be available for most of the 2022 IPL season.

This year's event will start on 2 April and run until 3 June, with Lucknow and the Ahmedabad-based Titans taking the number of teams to 10.

All-rounder Moeen Ali, who won the 2021 title with CSK, and Rajasthan Royals wicketkeeper Jos Buttler were the only England players retained by their franchises.

England leg-spinner Adil Rashid and wicketkeeper Sam Billings both went unsold on day one in Bangalore.

Other England players hoping to pick up deals on the second day of the auction on Sunday include white-ball captain Eoin Morgan, Alex Hales, Saqib Mahmood, Dawid Malan, Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills, Craig Overton, James Vince and David Willey.

The IPL auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapsed part way through day one because of low blood pressure but was attended to immediately and the IPL said he is stable.

Broadcaster Charu Sharma, who co-hosts the BBC World Service podcast Stumped, took over for the rest of the proceedings.

CSK bought India bowler Deepak Chahar for £1.4m - the second highest fee paid.

India batter Shreyas Iyer was the third-most expensive player, going to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for £1.2m.

Iyer was one of 10 marquee players auctioned in the first round, which also included Australia T20 World Cup winners David Warner, who went to Delhi Capitals for £612,000, and Cummins, who was bought back by KKR for £709,500.

Punjab Kings bought India opener Shikhar Dhawan for £807,300 and South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada for £905,200.

India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, for £489,300, and New Zealand left-arm fast bowler Trent Boult, for £782,850, both joined Rajasthan Royals.

Afterwards Ashwin said he was "looking forward to sharing the dressing room" with Buttler at Rajasthan.

Buttler reacted furiously when he was run out at the non-striker's end by Ashwin, then playing for Kings XI Punjab, in the 2019 IPL.

Faf du Plessis' long association with CSK came to an end after he was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for £685,000, while fellow South African Quinton de Kock went to Lucknow for £660,500.

India fast bowler Mohammed Shami was bought by Gujarat Titans for £612,000.

Other notable overseas signings included Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga being bought by RCB for £1.1m, New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson going to Gujarat Titans for £980,000 and Lucknow buying West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder for £856,000.

Australia batter Steve Smith and Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan were among the list of players who went unsold.

England fast bowler Mark Wood has been ruled out of the second Test against West Indies in Barbados.

He will be replaced in the side by debutant Saqib Mahmood.

Wood injured an elbow on day three of the drawn first Test in Antigua.

He did not bowl in West Indies' second innings after suffering "acute pain" when trying to bowl in the nets before the start of play on day five.

Wood was only able to bowl five overs on day three of the first Test before leaving the field.

Wood has not however been ruled out of the final meeting in the three-match series.

England captain Joe Root says Wood's omission from the team will be "disappointing" for the Durham player.

"He's been exceptional for us of late," said Root. "He's a big part of this team moving forward but it gives other guys opportunities."

England confirm Mark Wood out of the remainder of the Caribbean tour AND The Indian Premier League. "Right elbow injury" is all that has been shared so far - but due to see a specialist back in the UK

A superb bowler, but seriously injury prone this guy.

Clearly puts a great deal of strain on his body with his bowling style and his natural pace.

Rather than being a reliable stock regular, Mark might end up being more of an occasional treat for England fans to make the most of and enjoy when he is available to play.

Mark Wood has been under the knife this weekend - a fragment of bone and some scar tissue removed from his elbow. No fixed date on a return but could be circa 4-6 weeks, starting with limited overs cricket

This could escalate into Mark missing between half of and the entire English season quite easily. Can feel it coming already.

Also lost $1 million that the IPL would have paid him this season as per his contract.

Injuries sustained outside IPL are frowned upon by franchises and hence written into contracts.

England might want to save him for red ball only in the future.

May end up like a Tymal mills type bowler, but could make a career out of just that 4 overs at a time earn the millions at the same time.

England fast bowler Mark Wood says he is making "slow progress" in his return from elbow surgery and will not be fit to play Test cricket until the end of the summer at the earliest.

The 32-year-old is one of seven pace bowlers sidelined for England's first Test against New Zealand at Lord's.

"Every time I bowl there's still a bit of swelling," said Wood.

"I'm hoping I can get off my full run in the next couple of weeks then play for Durham after that."

Wood was one of England's standout performers in their 4-0 Ashes defeat, but managed to play in only one match of the 1-0 series loss in the West Indies.

He pulled out of the Indian Premier League, where he was due to play for Lucknow Super Giants, and underwent the operation on his right elbow in March.

"At the minute it's a little bit slow going," said Wood, who was speaking at an event for England Test sponsors LV= Insurance.

"The back-end of the summer is where I'll be looking at for Test matches, nothing early doors.

"If I can build up through one-day cricket first, that would make it easier for me to come back into Test matches."

England host New Zealand for three Tests in June before the rescheduled fifth Test against India in July. South Africa arrive later in the summer for three Tests in August and September.

Along with Wood, England are without Olly Stone, Sam Curran and Chris Woakes. This week alone, all of Jofra Archer, Saqib Mahmood and Matt Fisher have been ruled out for lengthy periods because of back stress fractures.

Ollie Robinson was not considered for the first Test because of a number of fitness issues.

When asked why so many fast bowlers have gone down with injuries, England's all-time leading wicket-taker James Anderson said: "Because it's hard work.

"It's quite strange that quite a few are happening at the same time, but it's the nature of bowling. People get injuries from time to time.

"Unfortunately we've got a cluster of them all at once. I don't think there's anything behind it, I just think it's an unfortunate period of time."

The number of absentees has handed an opportunity to Wood's Durham team-mate Matty Potts, who has been called up to the Test squad for the first time.

The 23-year-old is the leading wicket-taker in the County Championship this season.

"He's a proper bowler," said Wood. "He's got something about him and finds ways to get wickets. He's a big, strong lad, built like a tank.

"He never seems to drop off. He's really fit, constantly running in and making things happen. When you think nothing is happening, he gets a wicket. That's a great knack to have."

Injured at the moment, but this guy is seriously entertaining on commentary. Can sense where his post-cricket career in the future will be going!

Wood returns for England for the 3rd T20I vs Pakistan

A hugely welcome sight for England fans is the return of Mark Wood.

The quick bowler is playing his first competitive match since March, when he featured in a Test against the West Indies.

His extreme pace could be crucial to England's World Cup hopes.

Mark Wood's speeds for the 2 wickets he has taken so far:

153.3 kph (95.26 mph)
156.2 kph (97.06 mph)

He is the fastest bowler in the world.
He bowled with fire.
154 154 156 and almost others were 150 plus.

Every ball in Wood's second over today was clocked at over 93mph.

Quickest ball 97MPH… wow.

One of the fastest bowlers that I can ever remember seeing. Certainly the fastest English bowler ever. He’s wonderful.

It's not just his pace. As Nasser Hussain correctly said, it's his accuracy too.

No point being fast if you spray the ball everywhere.

He had a plan against Babar and Haider and it worked perfectly.

Eng activated their cheat mode tonight with this guy.

So Pakistan fluked the second match because he did not play and Moeen had a stinker as captain.

Wood was superb but you have to remember he is made out of glass and is not durable. England will need to wrap him in cotton wool. I am not sure he will last the T20 world Cup if he has to play every game.

That bouncer to Babar was a thing of beauty. What a delivery!

Sharjeel Khan smashed this guy around in 2016 even when he got up to 95-96 mph and effortlessly pulled and flicked his short deliveries for 4.

He is the fastest bowler in the world.

154 154 156 and almost others were 150 plus.

I don't watch much short format cricket but I haven't seen numbers like that since Johnson's Ashes.

'England must manage Wood'

England's star with the ball in Friday's victory was the returning Mark Wood, who made his first appearance since March after recovering from injury.

Wood produced an express spell, in which his bowling reached speeds as high as 97mph, as he took the crucial wickets of Pakistan captain Babar Azam and fellow top-order batter Haider Ali at the start of the hosts' innings.

Naseer Hussain believes Wood's return is a huge boost for England but has warned that the 32-year-old must be carefully managed between now and the World Cup.

"England are a better side in any format with Mark Wood in the team," Hussain said. "You need that pace, and he's got express pace, but he's got accuracy with it as well.

"Everyone focuses in on the 97mph, but...the players nowadays, if that's wide they'll just flay you over point for six, over third man they'll upper-cut you. He's accurate, he's right in at you.

Wood had one word for how he felt after hitting an eye-watering 156kph on his first appearance since March – "tired".

The right-armer had missed the entire English summer due to the elbow injury suffered during a Test match in Antigua and endured a longer-than-expected recovery from surgery.

He produced the kind of pace that only the very quickest bowlers in history can lay claim to, twice hitting the 156kph barrier, which was too much heat for Babar, Iftikhar Ahmed and Haris Rauf.

"I feel tired. It's my first game since March for England and I've played one game for my club team Ashington, so this has been a long time," he said.

"You tend to be a bit fresh after seven months out, so that's what I'm going to put (the pace) down to. But I felt a bit tired at the end. I know it's a T20, but it's the intensity of international cricket.

"I've done loads of time in the gym, lots of running, but nothing is the same as playing a game."

England will keep a careful eye on a player who can do things nobody else on their roster is capable of.
"The challenge now is to back it up – can I keep those speeds going?" said Wood.

"What's important for me is not to go too hard now and then I'm not ready for Australia. I've got to peak at the right time so when it comes to the (T20) World Cup I'm fit and firing.

"Today was a good day. When you haven't played for a while the adrenaline is flying, it's like a debut. The crowd was flying. But the challenge next time is, can I repeat that?"

Fierce bowler who has some real skill to go with the pace.

It’s a joke that Archer was preferred and rated above him for so long. Where’s effortless action ‘I’m not a robot’ moody bouncer specialist Archer now?

Mark Wood rested today v Pakistan.

Bowled superbly in the 3rd T20I but his return is being managed after two elbow surgeries.

That was embarrassing. Lillee, Holding, Marshall, Imran, Waqar, Wasim, Donald, Steyn etc. could sustain 90 mph all day. They were as quick at 6 p.m. as they were 11 a.m.

Having said that, 66 bears some reponsibility for overworking a young lad.

Woody should be getting the new ball for England in tests with Robinson. Jimmy or Broad can be third seamer.

It’s not to do with overworking, he just always had a poor entitled attitude. He had the natural talent but wasn’t willing to work. Wood is such a genuine hard working guy. Despite all the injuries he’s changed his run up and has come back faster each time.

Archer broke the law/ bubble regulations, lied about it, hid it while training with everyone until he accidentally mentioned it and then played the victim card when he had to isolate in a 5 star air conditioned room for 2 days. He literally put people’s lives at risk and millions of pounds on the line.

Nice words from Haris Rauf:

Haris Rauf "I'd like to learn from Mark Wood about his quick deliveries and if he likes my slower ball I can talk to him about it. It'll be good for us to chat. I really like his bowling"

Would love to see a joint training session between the two teams.

Hold on to your horses mate, you are not going to learn on how to bowl even quicker from Wood but he's definitely going to learn how to bowl slower deliveries, don't give away your trade secret that easily.

This guy’s fast and hostile short pitched bowling is like kryptonite to the Pakistan batters.

Would have been 7-0 to England if he were to play all games.

Our batsmen, including Babar and Rizwan, do not have the talent and the skill to tackle him.

I was told that Babar is probably one of the best players of pace bowling & then I saw Babar bat against Wood, Babar looks like a tailender 🤣😜

It was embarrassing watching Babar Azam bat like that against him.

Below average performance with the bat . Par score is only around 155-160 here but if batting gets easier in the nd innings, I suspect 175-180 would have been winning total

Babar has 4-5 140 km/hr plus bowlers to practice against in the nets. What does he really practice? In all the PCB videos, I see him practicing drives and against deliveries in his half.

'Wood has been awesome'

One real bright spot for England today was express paceman Mark Wood, who bagged 3-20 from four searing overs. Skipper MOEEN was full of praise for the bowler...

"[Wood] was amazing. On a real slow wicket he bowled fast. He has taken wickets and he is massive for our team, he gets the big wickets. Players with pace can make batters do silly things at times and he has been awesome. To bowl him at the right time is really important for us."

Would have been 7-0 to England if he were to play all games.

Our batsmen, including Babar and Rizwan, do not have the talent and the skill to tackle him.

He played the game today, and England lost. You are making fool of yourself.

Wood couldn’t do it today :(

Bowled brilliantly but unfortunately was not backed up by the English batsmen. To get that much pace and bounce out of what turned out to be quite a damp, turgid and slow surface was a top class bowling performance.

Would have been 7-0 to England if he were to play all games.

And that's another thread from where you will have to disapear...

I am a big fan of Mark Wood. Even when Archer was in the team, I believed Wood was better. He is a genuine quick bowler and these are in short supply in international cricket.

However, for a bowler making a comeback we have made it really easy for him. Our batsmen and especially Babar have lost the battle before he’s even bowled a ball. They look scared and intimidated.

Having said all that I must admit, it is a great sight to watch him bowl.

Babar has no issues with pace he tackles Rabada, Ferguson, Starc all OK in Test and ODIs its in T 20 when he is rushed for scoring he gets out playing the horizontal bat strokes

He doesn’t want to be rushed in T20 either but he has no choice when 95mph is at his throat especially when he wants to just dab everything down for a single

In tests and ODIs he can sit on the speed demon for couple of overs T 20 does not all you to duck and weave a lot of past great batsman such as Steve Waugh modous operandi vs high pace was to sit tight and not go for pulls and cuts it did not mean they were weak vs pace neither it hurt their legacy nor were they called soft Babar is in the same mould unfortunately T20 cricket does not allow you to sit on high pace and he has to go outiside his conform zone.

Bowling very very quick (1st T20I v Australia)
