Maryam Nawaz on June 30, 2017 had net assets totalling Rs. 845,953,559

PML-N's Maryam Nawaz has stated in the documents accompanying her election nomination papers that she owns more than 1,500 kanals of land and has millions of rupees worth of shares in multiple companies.

According to the affidavit submitted to the returning officer — copies of which are available with Dawn.com — Maryam on June 30, 2017 had net assets totalling Rs845,953,559, which had increased by Rs44,154,464 in the previous financial year alone.

Maryam has also declared that her agricultural land holdings have increased in each of the last three years and currently stand at 1,506 kanals, on which she earned an income of Rs11,587,268 and paid Rs1,703,590 as agricultural tax.

Moreover, the annexes accompanying her papers show that she had millions of rupees invested in multiple companies at the start of the ongoing financial year, totaling Rs18,931,000.

The document further shows that Maryam paid Rs1,491,000 in taxes during the financial year ending on June 30, 2016. However, her payment to the taxman for the next year dropped down to Rs41,961.

Maryam, the daughter of a former prime minister who is currently fighting corruption references in the accountability court, had famously claimed in a 2011 interview that neither she nor her brothers owned any properties outside or inside Pakistan.

Since her election papers only mention her financial details of the past three years, it does not shed any light on that 2011 claim.

Based on the information made public so far regarding assets of the candidates contesting elections:

PML-N heir apparent Maryam Nawaz is in the lead with a whopping Rs845 million to her name.

The second comfortably rich candidate is former president and co-chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party Asif Ali Zardari whose total value of assets is around Rs758.66m.

Yes I read this.

The man established a cancer hospital free of use for the poor on the back of donations.
These donations came from a broad spectrum of people, some of which are extremely rich.
So now he should stop accepting donations for his political purposes?

If that were the case then the last 50 presidents of the united states would not have been Presidents.
In fact most political parties around the world would be non existent.

Also, you assume that Imran has no savings and just relies on his monthly income. So again, the entire premise is based on misinformation.

Imran Khan is not superman. He is not a prophet.
But what he does offer is change and implementation of strong institutions to weed out corruption and to serve the poor.

Of course, we've heard all this before. But the problem is that the governments of the last 30 or so years have failed miserably. They have looted the country. They are comprised of family members and so are not even there on the basis of merit.

So if you are a democrat, someone who truly believes in Democracy, then what is the problem with voting for someone who is offering to bring something different? If he fails to bring about change then there will be another election in 5 years and the people can decide.

If you think he is as corrupt as the Sharifs and the Zardari's then please elaborate because despite billions of looted money at their disposal these two have yet to prove any corruption by Imran.

Having said that, quite pointless to ask candidates to declare "Cost of Asset" as opposed to "Current Market Value", i guess they expect people to lie about market value? Still, it's absolutely pointless to declare cost of asset as it serves no purpose.
