Maybe it's not worth picking players who choose IPL over international cricket, says Shane Warne

Warne said that he doesn't begrudge players choosing to earn as much money as they can However, he said that players have to accept that their places in international squads will come under question.
Warne said that it is often a hard choice to make for players considering the time and money involved.

Players who choose to play in T20 leagues instead of playing for their international sides might not be worth being picked by the latter, said former Australia spinner Shane Warne. Warne said that he doesn't begrudge players choosing to earn as much money as they can but it's only in international cricket, particularly Test cricket, where they can test themselves against the best in the world.

"I don't begrudge the players getting, it's fantastic. If they want to take the money, (let them) take it. But if you want to play cricket for your country and (still) you choose to play the IPL over your country, then maybe it's not worth picking those guys. Otherwise this is going to happen, people are going to rest and miss Test matches and miss representing your country to go and play for money,” Warne said on the Road to Ashes podcast.

Warne admitted that it is often a hard choice to make for players, especially when the franchises are paying more for them to play for a lesser period of time than their boards for Test series.

"It's pretty hard, you know if, someone says here's three million bucks and play for a short term or go over somewhere and play for six weeks being away from your family, it's a very easy decision to take that money. But if you value yourself as a cricketer and want to test yourself against the best, there's only one spot to do it and that’s international cricket, especially Test cricket.

"If you want to choose the money, that's fine, no problem, but you might have to wait for a few Test matches and you might go down a few runs no matter how good you are because there's always someone that can replace you," he added.

Easy for someone who made a lot of money playing in the IPL to day?

Won't happen, if players are asked to either pick the IPL or their own countries, unfortunately, a lot of top cricketers will choose the former.

They can rack up millions of dollars and enjoy life the easy way, and play more T20 leagues around the world.

They just have to be good enough and have to perform, though one thing to note is that the IPL does use international performances as a way to select players (ie. Jason Roy was not included and after that 50 he hit against India, SRH took him straight away).

They are more than welcome to choose IPL over international cricket but how and where will they get recognition before entering IPL? How will IPL notice them? They need international cricket for that. :inti

Easier said than done however, there can be an argument for boards maybe being bit more stringent in their national contracts. Its not easy to lose players when there is a lot of investment which goes onto players when someone comes from junior level to domestic cricket and then international cricket. So it wont make sense for boards to stop selecting them and not have their best XI on the field on the days they can.

Yes, it doesnt make sense for some countries to play millions in central contracts to their top players while they keep on resting series after series on the basis of workload management and IPL's long season playing its role as well. I think there should be a minimum matches the centrally contracted players should be playing for their national team except when they cant play due to injury. Workload management is important but, it surely cant be like this where a top player not only takes rest based upon workload management during international schedule but also after IPL where he isnt even representing his national country.

Also in my opinion you cant give different treatment to different players as some players not playing in IPL play more matches for their country within the same national contract salary as someone who is playing in IPL and only playing around 75% or even less international matches for their country.

They can get recognition by playing in other leagues. Not many people knew who Tim David was, but after seeing some of his performances in the PSL he’ll easily get an IPL contract.

Cricket boards should get players to sign a commitment before they debut, that if there are international fixtures taking place near or during the time of any optional leagues, then these players must return to international duty regardless of the situation.

If a player does not want to sign that deal, then they are welcome to leave, but if they fail to perform in the IPL, they won't have any means to redeem themselves.

Did Shane Warne ever told Cricket Australia that he cannot play upcoming test series because he will be playing in IPL at that time?

Exactly. IPL is like a lottery where even players like Dinesh Karthik and Unadkat can earn 10 crores per season. If they choose IPL over their national team and fail then they will most likely beg their country boards to give them another chance. :inti

Shane Warne retired from international cricket in 2007, and joined the inaugural IPL in 2008. He was already a cricketing god, and was free to enter into this new league and make his millions, which he has done.

The point is, it's easy for him to say this because he never had to make that choice, and made plenty of money from IPL without ever risking his international career. I'm not saying I agree with choosing IPL over country obviously, but perhaps the considerations of such a decision is different for younger up-and-coming players.
