The high profile India-Pakistan matches have always been a treat for cricket fans. The rivalry between the two nations has always been the centre of attraction, whichever format the teams play in. With yet another exciting contest on the cards, scheduled for Wednesday, both the countries - India and Pakistan - will once again meet in a high-voltage Asia Cup encounter. The last time both the teams clashed was during the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 final, in which Pakistan thrashed India by 180 runs.

With the high-octane Asia Cup clash between the two countries just few hours away, here's a look at the five memorable India vs Pakistan matches.

ODI, Sialkot, October 1984

On October 31, 1984, the day when the teams were playing a one-dayer at Sialkot, the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi.

Dilip Vengsarkar and Ravi Shastri were piling on runs for India when the news came. Pakistan's president Zia ul Haq ordered the match stopped, and India's captain Sunil Gavaskar wanted the same.

"Thirty years have gone by, but it's a day one can't forget," Gavaskar said.

ODI, Sharjah, March 1985

Imran Khan's best bowling figures of 6-14 were in a One-day International against India March 22, 1985, but for the swashbuckling Pakistan fast bowler it was all in vain.

Imran Khan ripped apart the Indian batting line-up at Sharjah to send the opposition packing for 125. But Pakistan's own batting imploded and they were skittled for just 87.

Imran Khan -- now the Pakistani Prime Minister -- was still man of the match.

ODI, Sharjah, April 1986

The match that will always evoke the bitterest memories for India, and the sweetest ones for Pakistan, was on April 18, 1986, again an ODI in Sharjah.

With Pakistan needing four off the last ball to win, India's Chetan Sharma ran in and bowled a full toss -- which Javed Miandad swatted for six.

Miandad, who was presented with a golden sword, became a national hero, while Sharma faced barbs and insults on his return home.

Test, Chennai, January 1999

A century from Sachin Tendulkar, India's most celebrated batsman, was usually a recipe for success in the 1990s and 2000s but not in the 1999 Test match against Pakistan in Chennai.

Chasing 271 for victory, Tendulkar brought India close with a sparkling 136, but Pakistani off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq got him out and India eventually lost by 12 runs.

A sporting Indian home crowd gave the Wasim Akram-led side a standing ovation, but Tendulkar was heartbroken.

Weeping in the dressing room, according to then-coach Anshuman Gaekwad, the "little master" refused to come out of the dressing room to receive his man of the match award.

T20I, Johannesburg, September 2007

An India-Pakistan final in the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup and a sell-out crowd in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2007 was a perfect setting for cricket's newest format.

Pakistan's Misbah ul Haq was on the cusp of taking his team to a memorable win with his gritty batting in a chase of 158.

But then came a moment of madness as Haq tried to play an audacious paddle shot to seal victory against paceman Joginder Sharma in the final over.

The ball went high into the waiting hands of S. Sreesanth. Mahendra Singh Dhoni's India celebrated like never before as Haq missed a chance of a lifetime.

Karachi ODI 2004 deserves a mention as well. A truly fitting opener for a high profile series.

350 was a massive total to chase in 2004, and it was incredible that we appeared to be running away with it at one point, but the late wickets of Malik and Razzaq derailed the chase, and we ended up losing by 5 runs.

One of the all-time great ODI matches between Pakistan and India, and probably among the top three ODIs of the decade.

Bangalore, 96
Centurion 2003
Cape Town 2007
Mohali 2011
Champions Trophy 2017

Take your pick.

99' Chennai Test takes the cake for me. 2006 Karachi Test isn't far behind.

Mohali 2011 was the most emotionally draining one for me. I was so spent up after that match that I didn't care much about the final. They hype preceding that SF must have been the greatest in any game of cricket.

Damn.

This has to be the best game between two sides.

Mohali 2011 was the most emotionally draining one for me. I was so spent up after that match that I didn't care much about the final. They hype preceding that SF must have been the greatest in any game of cricket.

It was emotionally draining and the hype was was incredible, but the match itself was a let down. India were average and Pakistan were terrible.

You don’t often see India crumble under pressure, but they surely felt the heat that day, but they controlled their nerves better than Pakistan.

In terms of hype and buildup, the 2003 World Cup game was pretty close. However, unlike Mohali, the match itself managed to live up the expectations.

Karachi Test in which Irfan took a hattrick was incredible.

Mohali 2011 was a terrible game to be honest. Younis and Misbah sucked the life out of the chase and Sachin kept getting chances. The best WC game between these two for me was 1996 in Bangalore. The way Jadeja batted and then Anwar and Aamer coming out all guns blazing, Latif's innings. That game had everything.

My top 5 would be:

1. Chennai 1999
2. Kolkata 1999
3. Karachi 2006
4. Bengaluru 2005
5. Champions Trophy final 2017

The biggest heartbreaks:

1. Bengaluru 1996
2. Mohali 2011
3. Centurion 2003
4. Delhi test 1999
5. Rawalpindi test 2004

Asia cup final. (afridi's two sixes).
Asia cup t20 match. (india won it easily at last but we wer 8-3 at one time).
Asia cup 2009(harbhajan's six on amir).

Do we have another series/cup scheduled with India? :danish

My top 5:

1. Mohali 2011
2. Chennai 1999
3. WT20 2007 Final
4. Karachi 2004 ODI
5. 2005 Ahmedabad ODI, Inzi last ball 4 to seal the win

I won't count one sided matches as memorable, otherwise some of the decisive tests and WC encounters between the 2 teams would have featured.

Asia cup 2009(harbhajan's six on amir).

Harbhajan six to Amir was in Asia cup 2010 not 2009 their was no Asia cup tourney that year

World t20 group stage match the one that ended in a tie followed by a bowl out was exciting and fun match.

For me personally most memorable matched since I am Pakistan fan would be the following
Asia cup 2014 vs India win
The aane do series I believe it was the first ODI Pakistan won that match and junaid khan took early wickets
The one that will always be in my heart is the champions trophy final win vs India

And then 'some' people have us believe that India Pakistan dont really need to play :)

Bangalore 96 and mohali 2011 will always be there in that list. Its one thing to win/lose generic ODIs in sharjah. But wc,knockout match, and above all played on indian soil -you just cant let Pakistan win such a match.Prasad-Sohail is an immortal moment.

It became known that Ind will meet Pak in the semifinals about a week before the game and therefore the buildup to that game was something else. Not good for health. Afterwards I developed serious respect for players who would have felt it a million times more than me. I wish there was a MRI OR CT Scan that could capture the intensity of that knot deep in the pit of my stomach. Just nothing compared to that. No other match can put you through that agony. No other set of players from other teams have possibly come close to that peak pressure situation. Another electrifying match was 96 QF And 2003.

Therefore I chuckle everytime the likes of Proactive_ and Junaids run down Indian players like SRT, Sehwag, Kohli etc.

Yes sir you stole the words from my mouth as I was about to mention this game :)

Keep in mind we were 38/2 after 12 overs chasing 350 yet we still fell short by only 6 runs MMHS

Absolutely incredible!

Also at the time it was the highest score ever scored in the 2nd innings.

The last two years had only one sided games, including CT final. Nothing better in cricket than a Pak vs Ind nail biter. Been a while

It's a factor that often gets understated. It is a whole different ball game when you have the expectations of a billion people on you.

For me:

1. The Chennai Test
2. Karachi Test 2006
3. 2005 4th ODI where Inzi hit a 4 on the last ball.
4. Wt20 07 final (heartbroken one)
5. CT17 final

Honorable mentions:
2009 CT encounter
3rd Test 2005
2014 Asia Cup (possibly the least hyped of the lot)

I'll go further and say it was the best ODI I have ever seen. The buildup was off the charts. The two teams hadn't faced each other in a bilateral series in Pakistan since 1989 and this was the first match since the 2003 WC encounter.

We were in for an embarassment when India racked up 349 and we lost two early wickets. However this is why I've a soft spot for Inzamam - from a hopeless situation he put the burden of the team on his shoulders to produce a brilliant captain's innings, and deserved to be on the winning side. The chase was set up perfectly only for the lower order to choke.

The match was full of unforgettable moments with three highlights still standing out after all these years - Yousuf's two inside out sixes off Kumble, Razzaq hitting the ball onto the roof of NSK and Kaif nearly killing himself to pull off a stunning catch. In the end, we were left with the bittersweet irony of needing a six off the final ball with coach Javed Miandad on the balcony asking his protege Moin Khan to repeat his heroics from 1986.

It wasn't to be, but I've never heard an atmosphere as frenzied and emotional as that day. Despite fears of crowd trouble before the series, the Karachi crowd gave a standing ovation to India to repay the Chennai crowd in 1999.

I still get chills watching the highlights. Drama, intensity, narrative, big names, what more could you want in a game of cricket ?

Yes, lots of hype. Haven't personally seen such hype again.

I remember me and my family was in Pakistan during the 2011 World Cup. The pain I felt and still feel from that defeat is still there. Not forgetting it’s still as strong.

I remember I was 14 years old and watching it at my cousins house literally glued to the screen. Feeling every single ball.

Then we left for a restaurant and I requested a seat near the tv and we sat there. I remember Umar Akmal launching yuvraj for a daddy six and was so happy.

Then the wickets were falling. However as a child I did not loose hope till literally the last ball. I remember every alley every single place you’d hear commentary of the game. With massive screen projectors on roads and hundreds of people including police.

The pain is still so strong that nearly 8 years on I still can not go back and rewatch that game.

It showed on the players. Both sets of players (except 2-3 in either side) including legends were so nervous during that game and produced such a low quality contest. I mean they had players who had taken part in many Indo-Pak contests before including World Cups, WT20s, CTs and tournament finals, yet they were literally quaking in their boots that day.

It is easy for us to judge but it was the worst kind of mental torture for both teams. So much media hype, fan wars, bravado, ex-players/experts blah blah blah, culminating in both PMs, cabinet ministers and celebrities watching the match live at the stadium. The prize was a final in Mumbai, which was probably the biggest prize both teams were playing for in their cricket history, for India a final to send off the iconic Sachin Tendulkar in his home turf, for Pakistan playing a WC final in Mumbai amidst rather tense diplomatic ties, both teams having not won a World Cup for many years.

Some old timers on PP make fun of ODI and mock WCs compared to test cricket. But I doubt any test match must have been played under as much pressure as that match in Mohali, I doubt any sporting event in the Universe had so much emotions riding on a single match including any FIFA WC final. Misbah and Younis basically won that match for us but I feel sorry for them, I think they had the ability to get a winning position but simply froze due to stage fright. Both were mentally tough campaigners (and skilled in Asian conditions if you want to bring up YK's ODI record) but it is difficult to logically express the sequence of events that day. Elite sportsmen are trained to play under pressure but honestly as a fan I almost had a nervous breakdown that day which has never happened during any other sporting event my whole life.

Not sure if Sialkot 84 is memorable for cricketing reasons.

Obviously the Champions Trophy Final will now forever be ingrained in terms of memorable encounters.

Also add in the Asia Cup final 2014, final ball 6, sparkling stuff from Afridi, world class from Hafeez, Sharma and Jadeja at their best. I twas tense limited overs cricket in a high stakes match up.

Miandad 6 in Sharjah lifted Pak ODI cricket like no other. To me, it is the best ever and we dominated India for a long time since.

Another thing to note is that the thought of what might happen if we lost to Pakistan must have gone though the Indian players mind. Especially when we were in a bad position after Wahab ran thru middle order ... just imagine being in their shoes !!

quite right ... however nobody takes these elitist Test match snobs seriously.

Misbah yes but not so much others but Yup a classic case of nerves. Any other opponent other than India and Pakistan would have had a far better chance. MSD was right on the money as far as captaincy. Respect !

I lived thru the 96 QF which was just as nerve wracking if not more. I cannot ever forget the Anwar/Sohail fight back and the subsequent relief after they both got out quickly. Unforgettable experience.

For me

1. Chennai 1999
2. Kolkata 1999
3. Karachi 2006
4. Champions Trophy final 2017

The biggest let downs: Both self inflicted and defeats

1. Bengaluru 1996
2. Mohali 2011

Best Batting moments

Anwars 194 vs India
Afridis - kanpur massacre
Ijaz Ahmed - Assault in lahore

Best Bowling moments

Akthars sending dravid and sachin packing with thunderbolts

Saqlains brilliant bowling where he took 20 wickets in 2 tests vs india in 99

For me:

1. The Chennai Test
2. Karachi Test 2006
3. 2005 4th ODI where Inzi hit a 4 on the last ball.
4. Wt20 07 final (heartbroken one)
5. CT17 final

Honorable mentions:
2009 CT encounter
3rd Test 2005
2014 Asia Cup (possibly the least hyped of the lot)

Wt20 2020 sneaks into my favorites as well now because it was a statement making opener for Pak in wt20 where expectations were pretty low.

2004 CT pak vs india match was very good as well.

Pak's tour to India 2007 was the most boring series overall for me. Apart from 2 ODIs, all the matches were pretty one sided. And the test series was dour.

Wow this is a gem that's popped up in my recommendations. The hype and anticipation for the 2004 tour was out of this world, and the cricket didn't disappoint.

Still my favourite ODI series of all time.

Watching this buildup is enough to give me chills. The atmosphere was amazing before a ball was bowled !

Basically, all 5 Test victories by Pakistan since I started watching cricket.

The only white ball matches which mattered were those in ODI World Cups, and India deservedly won all of those.

Don't remember any bilateral white ball matches at all, they are all a blur.

So many memorable encounters over the years.

2004 Jeet Lo Dil ODI series was easily the best bilateral ODI series in the history of cricket. The atmosphere, the packed stadiums, exciting games. Nothing beat the first ODI in Karachi but that whole series - was hooked.

Naturally CT final 2017 will be remembered.

In terms of tests, the Chennai win trumps everything else but will also always remember Bangalore 2005 and Karachi 2006.

2003 World Cup game was iconic. It was like a dream match with all the big names featuring from both sides

For me has to be the first game in karachi of that iconic series in 2004, so much emotion pakistan looked dead and buried after first innings but then came so close to nicking it at the end, proper see saw game. Other notable mentions :

- Chennai test
-2017 - champions trophy
-152-0
- Afridi 2 6s in last over asia cup.

Nothing beats Mohali. The hype, the euphoria and eyeball that game got was insane. Everyone in the country including ones who has no interest in cricket knew something big is going on. I remember reading an article here in UK that people in this country (especially referring to premier league fans) can never fathom what this game meant to Sub continent people.

The actual final was so much less hyped and tension free after that game. No India-Pakistan game in my memory has topped Mohali 2011.

:salute

I was revisiting the highlights of that 2003 World Cup game. Thinking about it now, the Indian Pacers bowled really well that day on a flat track. They were giving nothing away and Pakistan as usual were playing their 90s brand of Cricket which wasn’t quite outdated in 2003. Saeed Anwar played some exquisite shots to keep the scoreboard ticking, otherwise it was a below par performance from the rest of the batsmen.

Secondly, Pakistani pace bowlers were unnecessarily too short against the Indian batsmen who pounded everything that pitched slightly short. Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra in contrast were so much filler in their lengths and much more difficult to play.

Ramiz Raja and Sanjay Manjrekar are an iconic commentary duo. A bit like Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler. These two made the ODI series between both teams very exciting

I was really freaking out when it was pouring cats and dogs the previous night in Mohali. If the game was washed out, Pakistan would have auto-qualified since they topped their group.

Thankfully it was clear blue skies both on and above the field that day. :)

It's the brand of cricket Pakistan play, which is called brainless elegance.

Will win you 1 major trophy in 10-15 years on average though.

They are too scared to evolve. It’s like evolving as a batting mentality is against the constitution and values upon which Pakistan was built upon.

India posted a below par total in 2011 but they were targeting 350+ until Wahab knocked over some back to back wickets and dented the scoring.

Not really an achievement when there are only 8 major teams and a tournament more or less every year.

Even West Indies have won the 2004 CT, 2012 WT20, 2016 WT20.

On this day in 1978, Pakistan chased down the 164-run target inside 25 overs on the final afternoon of the third Test against India to win the series 2-0. One of the most iconic and memorable moments for Pakistan.

I started to watch cricket from 1997. Since then, my favorite India-Pakistan matches are:

1) Pakistan vs India in 1998 Sahara Cup (Afridi scored 109). I was sick in the bed but I enjoyed Afridi's innings.

2) Pakistan vs India in 1998 Independence Cup final. Pakistan scored like 315. India chased it down. Brilliant ODI.

3) Pakistan vs India in India (1999 tri-series) final. Pakistan won; they completely crushed India.

4) Afridi's Kanpur innings (2004).

5) Pakistan vs India Kitply Cup final. Pakistan won.

6) Pakistan vs India - World T20 semi-final (2021). Pakistan won (152/0).

These are my favorite games.

Surprisingly your favourite matches were all won by Pakistan .:kp

Back then when India used to visit Pakistan for a series, like 2006-7, those were the days when we used to see some famous games.

2014 asia cup game was also worth remembering when Afridi changed the whole scenario of game and struck those 2 unbelievable sixes.

For me:

1. The Chennai Test
2. Karachi Test 2006
3. 2005 4th ODI where Inzi hit a 4 on the last ball.
4. Wt20 07 final (heartbroken one)
5. CT17 final

Honorable mentions:
2009 CT encounter
3rd Test 2005
2014 Asia Cup (possibly the least hyped of the lot)
2005 Kanpur was delightful spanking.
That ODI in which Jadeja scored 90 chasing 280 something was pretty good as well.
