What's new

Misbah-ul-Haq not to take role as mentor for Islamabad United, picked by Peshawar Zalmi for PSL 4

Thank God.

Misbah was our weakest link in the last season. Rumman Raees did a good job last season as captain I feel. He should be persisted with.

It was inevitable, and he should have seen this coming. Should have retired after PSL 3 with dignity instead of being forced out.

NO, stupid decision.

He is needed as captain, and the guy is still one of the best players in Pakistan against Spin.

His captaincy alone had won us the final of 2018 PSL

as struggling last year and would have been absolutely disgraceful if he was doing even worst this time.

if an adequate replacement is not made, i think we can say bye-bye to Islamabad's hopes for a playoff spot.

that is good please try shadab khan as captain next season dont appoint any foreigner

May be this time he’ll retire. He should have seen it from last BPL. Also, now that he has been given some role at PCB, need to focus on building 2nd career in that line. He has everything to be successful in that avenue as well.

From Islamabad United:

Islamabad United has always greatly valued Misbah as a player, leader and a superb team player. As he transitions into his non-playing phase, we believe he can add a lot of value to ISLU as well as to Pakistan. The franchise continues to discuss with him avenues which could provide him a platform to pursue his next phase. These discussions continue and deserve the confidentiality which a senior player like him deserves.

Ali Naqvi; “Misbah is undoubtedly one of the most brilliant cricketing minds of today. We as a team and I personally have been privileged to benefit from his leadership on and off the ground. We are looking forward to his next innings. Salute to you, Captain!”

I think Islamabad should draft a new player to become captain for next season. Don't see anyone in the current squad capable of being captain. Rumman Raees was one option and he did well as captain in a few games but his injury seems to be very serious as he is still not back to fitness

They already nurtured Rumman Raees in few matches and he did decently. So they already have an option unless they want someone else.

He wasn't even playing :)))

Not on IU, every PSL team should be forced to appoint young PAK players as Captain. There are sereral readymade options available apart from Sarfraz- Amir, Babar, FZ, Imad, Saud, Hasan, Shadab, Ahmed, Fahim ..... and I am serious with last few names. Recently I can see PTV team appointing Saud as Captain and then Hasan Mohsin when Saud is off for national duty - and they are in SF of QeA Cup. If you are good enough - you are experience enough (sorry that had to disagree with MHK here - my bad).

2nd is WK - PSL must ensure that a local WK is keeping every ball (& no Kamran, bad investment now). There are enough players available apart from the top 2. Ronchi, Mushi, Mendis, Perera, Walton, AB, B Taylor, Buttler...... can play as specialist bat, but must not keep.

Islamabad United has always been a professional setup and the best run franchise in the PSL. They have owners who are not emotional and delegate their duties to the right person. Their scouting network is impeccable. Misbah has led them to 2 PSL titles and they are not stupid to throw away all that experience and intelligence. Pretty sure we'll see Misbah as a mentor to ISB unless Misbah's role with the PCB prohibits him for being in an administrative position with any franchise.

He played like two games and then got injured
Rumman and JP Duminy took ISLU to the final

A fitting end to Misbah ul Haq's career, being kicked out

Excelling suggestion - this is the stepping stone we need to end the seniority culture in Pakistan cricket.

It was inevitable.

Rumman if fit should be the new captain otherwise JP Duminy could be the guy if he is available for the entirety of the tournament.

Not in favor of appointing Shadab as he needs to work a lot on his bowling and batting rather than adding another burden too soon.

IU have already lost a key player in JP Duminy. With the departure of Misbah they will plunge into further crisis. Knowing the mentality of PSL franchises I’m predicting Sami as their captain in this edition of PSL.

Why make up stuff like this? You know very well he wasn't playing in that final. Misbah played no part in that final - 0% just to make that very clear.

Secondly if he is still one of the best players of spin, can you explain why he had a strike rate of 75 after 8 matches in the 2018 PSL?

It seems you want Misbah to be kept in professional cricket at all costs which is sad really. Obviously lets throw meritocracy out of the window because cricket doesn't need it.

Misbah should talk with other teams now, and if any team is willing to take him as a captain, then join that team.

Would be hilarious if Lahore picks him up as a captain.

Thank God that united finally decided to get rid of him. Our senior players lack self respect and deserved to be kicked out.

Good riddance. Misbah should have realized he can no longer play at this level. Now time for a young chap to lead Islu.

Yes he should talk to other teams so he can extend his heroics with another sub-100 SR :misbah:genius

Misbah ul Haq's legacy, being kicked out of international cricket by the PCB. Being benched in the BPL. Being kicked out of the PSL by his franchise. Hoping that his domestic team will follow suit in domestic cricket.

It's hard to believe that the IU management would 'kick out' Misbah Ul Haq. With Misbah being an instrumental part of the PCB advisory committee, I'm pretty sure he would've requested this in order to avoid any potential conflict of interest.

If he was indeed forced out, I would be quite surprised.

Misbah as proven throughout his career that he does not leave on his own, he needs to be kicked out.

Zaka Ashraf forced him to Step down from International T-20 Cricket in 2012. Shahryar Khan forced Misbah to quit after the WI tour of 2017. And now IU have forced Misbah to sit on the bench for the 2019 PSL.

The only icing on the cake left is if his domestic side finally says enough is enough.

That’ll only prove my point - all these passion for cricket is just a “bahana” - guy is hankerings for PSL money & IU this time called the bluff. A player like him (& his fans), 7 years captain of PAK should have known better when to quit.

I am sure there is an element of truth to that.

However, I feel Misbah is only prolonging the inevitable end in order to support the philanthropy work he probably is planning to engage in (like that hospital for kids with congenital heart defects). That might not be the exact reason, but that does seem more characteristic of Misbah.

Will not look good on Misbah if he leaves IU for another Franchise just on the basis that they not only accepted him as a player but as a captain as well. IU has backed Misbah 100% and stood by him through thick and skin. Such a move will only prove that Misbah is greedy for $$, power and status.

Good decision.

He was uber good as a PSL captain, two victories in 3 editions.

If ISLU takes him as a coach, ISLU will likely be unbeatable for years to come. Or very few losses.

It was time.

He had a decent career, now time to let go.

Rumman Raees should be the captain, fitness permitting.

What has Rumman does to deserve captaincy? (I know he captained a couple of games last season).

lol, Misbah got kicked out. History will remember he got kicked out

Who else? I don't see Faheem or Shadab getting captaincy.

I don't want any foreigner being captain either.

Rumman was the successor to Misbah as IU captain anyway, as VC. You can argue that bringing him in as captain after being injured for a year is the wrong decision but I don't see any other viable option.

IU trying to smooth it over but the fact is Misbah wanted to carry on playing.

One thing that is very pleasing to see is most the PSL sides now have the ruthlessness needed to pick on merit rather than seniority (no room for sentiment). Contrast that with domestic cricket..

could tell from the tone of your post how much you hate that guy.

LOL history? This really doesnt even matter. Guy has won 2 PSL! And was a Pakistani Legend.

This has nothing to do with hate or criticism. Fact is he got kicked out forcefully because he wouldn't take the hint or see the writing on the wall.

Savak is right here, it has nothing to do with hate or having favourites. Facts are ISLU won the PSL without Misbah (including the final) and his contributions (low scores coming at a sub-100 SR) meant he was more of a liability in those handful of games he played - he sure wasn't an asset that's for certain.

It is shameful, disrespectful and damn right inconsiderate towards all the reserve Pakistani batsmen in the ISLU squad to seek their chances squandered all because you can't stand to see your role model no longer playing cricket at professional level.

Pakistani legend :)))

Can you tell me the achievements of this legend?

If Misbah comes into bat on crutches, my man Major will defend him.

Must say, loyal to the end.

Not an ordinary Pakistani fan.

Misbah will always have my respect, but his playing days are over and IU were absolutely right in their decision not to retain him as a player.

If Misbah felt aggrieved at their decision, he was more than welcome to join the draft and prove IU wrong. The fact he didn't speaks volumes.

Disagree with the bit in bold. There are far too many "fans" who seem to support their favourite players over the national team.

A non Pakistani legend, the amount of matches he has won for the opposition is unparralled.

Had this a lot during Afridi's playing days but this from major is on another level.

No franchise with their bearings in tact will pick him. Misbah even though he scored his ineffective slow fifties was immediately benched by the BPL franchises, that is how he is viewed by neutral objective non Pakistani T-20 franchises.

Misbah ul haq got kicked out by every team he has played for. Facts.

IU tried their best to give him an honourable and face saving exit but his ego has prevented him from making the most of it.

No befitting end than being unpicked in the drafts.

Oops - Change of plan.....

I think he's within his rights to try his luck at the draft and see what happens.

He obviously feels that he can still offer something as a player rather than being pushed down the mentor, ambassador, cheerleader, president, towel carrier route.

He is entitled to his opinion no matter how stupid it is. And boy, is this a stupid opinion!!! He is a great man and ambassador for Pakistan cricket but he needs to know that its time to let go.

Would be surprised if he is picked up by anyone. I feel that he realises he is only playing because of the admin roles and would rather be playing on merit. Bold decision by him and must be respected. Plenty of ‘senior players’ wouldn’t surrender a spot like this

Lol I'm astounded. If I remember he was listed as a Platinum player before too, wonder if he'll go in the auction as a Platinum player again.

The only team I could possibly see picking him up are Lahore as they're desperate for a captain to change around their fortunes. They neglected it all those years back, claiming it didn't matter too much and are paying the price every single PSL after. But even them, doubt they'd be willing to take him at Platinum. Actually maybe thinking about it Lahore are so desperate for a captain they might actually do it.

I agree with Saj though, he still has the rights to try it out in the draft. If he doesn't get picked, then he doesn't get picked. All this talk about saving face is overrated, if he feels like he can perform and wants to have a shot, then let him try his luck. Better to do something and potentially be embarrassed than just doing nothing and regretting it later.

I cannot imagine Misbah taking this decision without an indication from some franchise. It would be career 'suicide'

There might be a possibility that Islamabad may still offering him that coaching/mentoring role if he doesn’t get picked.

I get the feeling that either multan or Lahore will pick him if anyone does, because the other teams don’t look like they would be interested in signing misbah.

Misbah's selfishness personified. Got kicked out of the Pakistan T-20 team in 2012, went to Zaka Ashraf's house and raised a sissy fit. Got benched by Shakib in the BPL in 2015 because he saw Misbah's selfish 50's for what they are and he raised a sissy fit about never playing in the BPL again. Got kicked out of the Pakistani test team in 2017 and complained in the media about the PCB forcing him out. Now IU told him very politely to give up being a player and take on a mentor role behind the scenes and he throws a sissy fit and decides to put himself in the draft instead.

And he is still hogging a spot in domestic cricket ahead of a more deserving younger player. The selfishness of this man knows no bounds.

I have supported Misbah through thick and thin, but tbh, he should let it go now. He was way past it during the last PSL and 45 is not the age where he should be looking to play, would have been better if he had mentored the youngsters at IU.

There is no prospect of a career suicide because he's finished as a cricketer.

Even if he does get picked, there's no chance they will pick a batsman who went at a strike rate of well below even 100 - ofc unless the franchise wants to find a way of finishing last.

Exactly

Misbah would be better suited doing an ICC level 3 coaching qualification to maximise his cricketing potential and look to manage a side somewhere.

The guy is the kind of person who would be a great Director of Cricket
