'Most impressed by Jasprit Bumrah' – Mitchell Johnson

Mitchell Johnson, the former Australia pacer, has heaped praise on Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian quick, saying he "hardly bowls a loose delivery" and that "any batsman will think twice before taking him on".

With 11 wickets in two Tests against Australia, Bumrah is the second-highest wicket-taker in the series behind Nathan Lyon (16 wickets).

"He has a unique action, but is very consistent with his line and length," Johnson told the Times of India. "He hardly bowls a loose delivery, which means he is hard to score off and any batsman will think twice before taking him on. The pressure he creates at one end often leads to wickets tumbling at the other."

The Indian pace attack looked impressive in the first two Tests, troubling the home batsmen with their disciplined and fiery display. Johnson, however, believes there is still scope for improvement.

"There is no doubt that they have bowled well as a unit over the past year or so and regularly picked 20 wickets in overseas conditions," he conceded. "They just need to assess the conditions and the pitch better and hit the right length quickly.

"Ishant Sharma has been around for a while. He is hitting the bat hard, which is a good sign, but needs to be more consistent with his line. Mohammed Shami has a smooth action and has the ability to surprise batsman with the occasional short ball. Umesh Yadav seems to have added a yard of pace but does not swing it much these days, but the bowler who impressed me most is Jasprit Bumrah."

Johnson further praised the Australian attack, calling the pace battery "young, fit and focused".

"The Australian attack is world class. Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins are all different types of bowlers and the best thing about them is that they are young, fit and focused," he said.

"Don’t forget that there are four or five others like James Pattinson, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jackson Bird and Jason Behrendorff who are waiting to break into the national team. There are also quite a few pacers who have built their reputation as limited-overs specialists. They are not in the ‘express’ category but have good variations that come in handy in ODIs."

it appears that india is so desperate for praise, they would forge an interview.

But what does he gain by lying?

Doesn't have to gain anything. In retrospect, he probably doesn't like how his words have been printed?

His tweet says he interacted with many journos and probably confided these views thinking it was just off the record casual chat and not meant for publishing.

If he didn't give an interview, he should sue them. It's a serious issue.

Hilarious and typical of TOI to jump the gun. :91:

im pretty sure what happened.

He is having a private conversation and some wannabe, too eager Indian journalist overhears the conversation and puts his words as quotes in an article.

Pretty sure its illegal. Heck I think even if Mitchell Johnson was directly talking to the journalist those words cannot be printed unless his permission is specifically sought

The Indian "journalism" and "news" are epic :yk

These people painted Imran Khan as some sorta Bollywood villain after all :)))

Haha :))

Petty Indian journalists doing everything to hype up their players. It can't get any hilarious than this.

Yep. Times of India are the pits. Have a look at their website on any given day - half the links are clickbait stuff and the other half are adverts (thankfully AdBlock exists though they tried to fight that too same time last year).

Right now on the front page:
Rad lipstick shades to grab eyeballs
Taimur meowing at a cat is too cute to handle
BB12: BB gives Deepak a secret task

Thankfully I've switched to Indian Express - they're much better and steer clear of gimmicks, at least for now. Times of India aren't called TOIlet paper for nothing.

Jasprit Burmah doesn't require the praise of a mediocre bowler like M. Johnson. Burmah is already the current #1 Bowler in world cricket and he is already right up there with the ATG's of Indian cricket in his short career span!

Wait are you actually serious? The sad thing is that there is a solid chance that you are.

Have some common sense before talking rubbish about a great bowler like Jonson. He averages 22 with the ball in the world cup and helped Australia to win 2 World Cup titles. What has this bumrah with his mediocre bowling action has achived in his career. Yes, played one champions trophy final and was taken to the cleaners by a rikkie Pakistani opener.

As a bowler Mitchell Johnson wipes the floor with bumrah.

lol. Johnson was one of the most feared bowlers in history at his peak.

He has taken 16 4w hauls and 12 5frs. Bumrah is yet to take 4 wickets in a test innings.

Pretty poor journalism to big up your own players.

Watch how Indian Posters will defend this journalist oh wait they have already started :yk

ToI being taken to the cleaners. Lovely.

However, will they have learned from this? Will tomorrow's edition be to the point minus any masala and fiction?

Unlikely. Knowing them, they're probably relishing this. Any news is good news - pun intended.

Bumrah has taken two fifers.Quoted just for correction :narine

Bumrah has 2 5 wicket hauls in tests. Just so you know.

TOI journalist eaves dropping and made up half of the story. Seriously embarrassing stuff.

Mind boggles as to why he didn't just interview MJ.

I thought ToI was regarded as one of the outlets that try to be neutral?

Since you're one of the sane parosi voices, can you tell how ToI is when it comes to being jingoist, towing the right wing/conservative line, propagating hate b/w IND/Pak?

Johnson has every right to be annoyed here. Toi probably thought that Johnson would't have noticed.

While Times of India from the days of yore used to set the standard in Indian print publications, they have been in a downward spiral since the Internet era took over - both online and offline. Sure, you can call them 'neutral' but that only means they play both sides of any argument (including India - Pakistan), and try anything and everything to drive up the clicks, and consequently, fleece the advertisers by claiming they are the most read daily in the country.

Ok, so they basically still try to present both sides of the story?

I guess that's a positive.

This incident is obviously not very professional, but hiccups can happen to anyone. I guess in sports/entertainment they try to do masala, which everyone does.

If they're not promoting jingoism and hatred, that's good enough.

This is pretty embarrassing by the Indians. All the money and influence in the world and they still need to resort to these tactics to big their players.

Yes, all 1.2 billion Indians decided to screw MJ over this interview. Blame TOI and the incompetent and lazy journalist. May be BCCI’s conspired with TOI to prop up one of their players.

This is just one journalist/newspaper. No need to generalize for all Indians.

As a proof he even posted a pic with Mitch, this is embarrassing by Times of India.

There is a reason it is called ToIlet paper in India, jokers LOL.

Lol. Not sure if a troll post? Johnson has won two Test series on his own for Australia, that too against England and South Africa. By comparison, Bumrah has done nothing of note.

Also I’m surprised by Indian fans giving maximum weightage to rankings when it comes to their players, while belittling Shakib Al-Hasan as a nothing player when he has been ranked the number one all-rounder since eons.

Eager Indian journalism is at play. And Bumrah is the no.1 pacer in the world. He doesn't need praise from Mitch or someone. I don't think Bumrah cares about it much. Very smart bowler with his feet firmly planted on the ground.

In India, journalists in general have very low ethics but when its comes to TOI main paper specifically, its now a masala newspaper. They changed the rules of publishing business by making advertisement as their core business and news as mere secondary. They don't report news or facts, they publish what people like to hear.

Seems like the TOI guy has been hovering around Johnson, listening to his conversations and has made up this interview.

Pretty poor really.

Very poor stuff from ToI.

So basically Johnson had casual chats with many journalists while on break from his commentating duties and this Indian journalist decided to write an article based on their off-the-record conversation. And instead of apologising for the breach of confidentiality and unprofessionalism the journalist and his newspaper are doubling down on Johnson. This is hilarious.

If Johnson believes this is breach of confidentiality he should sue TOI.

This looks like the Journo had a chat with Johnson and published that. Not a official interview.

All Johnson need to do is to stay away from such low life journalist, aise bande ko mau lagane ka kya faida.Idiot journalist and equally stupid newspaper.

Tyler oh Tyler, Bumrah got hammered in the Final of CT last year, nothing #1 about that now is there.

Johnson on the other hand was a legit one of the #1 Bowlers of his time.
