GHOTKI: Law enforcers are on alert in Sindh’s District Ghotki as reports emerge of rioting and violence by a mob after a Hindu school teacher was booked on charges of blasphemy.

The mob attacked a school – Sindh Public School – and desecrated a temple in the area over accusations of blasphemy against the school principal, who is from the Hindu community.

Reports suggest houses of Hindu families have also been attacked and the mob has blocked off roads in the area.

The rioting comes after a student accused the Hindu teacher of allegedly passing blasphemous remarks.

An FIR registered against the accused teacher on behalf of the student’s father includes Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code, which pertains to the use of derogatory remarks against the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

Activists and journalists used Twitter to share videos and images of the rioting in Ghotki, and appealed to the Sindh government and law enforcement agencies to protect the vulnerable Hindu community.

Riots break out in Ghotki over alleged blasphemy by school principal

Ghotki Senior Superintendent of Police Farrukh Lanjar, while talking to local reporters, said that police were controlling the law and order situation in the area.

Advocate Veerji Kolhi, special assistant to Chief Minister Sindh on Human Rights, told Dawn: "The situation is being handled properly to avoid further damage or riots."

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) MNA Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, who is also the head of the Pakistan Hindu Council, told Dawn that the case has been handed over to Hyderabad Deputy Inspector General Naeem Shaikh who will further investigate the matter. He added that the principal was at an undisclosed location for safety reasons and will be handed over to Shaikh.

"I have talked to Sindh Inspector General of Police Kaleem Imam who has assured me the police will fully protect the accused, therefore, I am going to hand [the principal] over to police either in Karachi or in Hyderabad today," he said.

The MNA said that the protesters had vandalised three temples, a private school and multiple houses belonging to the Hindu community and added that he had asked police to register an FIR against people involved in the riots.

Pathetic sub continent mentality, cow protectors in India or blasphemy vigilantes of Pakistan, when will they learn to keep their noses out of other people’s business. If you think eating beef is against your religion then don’t eat beef and same as of saying something against Mohammed is blasphemous then don’t do it. Why in the world they think others have to follow their code of conduct.

Guess who said this few hours before
Difference between Pakistan and what the RSS-backed BJP government is doing in India, is that "when they mistreat their minorities, it is according to their ideology. They do not believe that minorities are equal citizens".

Judiciary in both countries are pathetic which upholds the constitutional validity of such laws passed by stupid politicians.

Wow! This is crazy.

Innocents shouldn't be targeted (doesn't matter which faith).

Could not agree any more. If action of others hurt feeling of another , then there is serious questions on the sanity of the individual . Is his belief so weak that it gets violated by somebody doing something different?

Absolutely apalled at the ignorance of the people.

Shameful and disgusting to the core.

Somehow assumed Sindh is more multicultural..

It is more multicultural since it’s the most religiously diverse province of Pakistan, but Sindhis are just as bigoted as any other ethnic group in Pakistan unfortunately...

Blasphemy allegation: Over 200 booked for anti-Hindu riots in Ghotki

KARACHI: Police have nominated more than 200 people in three cases registered in connection with the violent anti-Hindu riots witnessed in Sindh’s District Ghotki on Sunday.

Officials confirmed to The Express Tribune that three separate cases have been filed in which a total of 218 people have been nominated.

The development comes a day after hundreds of angry protesters took to the streets in Ghotki after Notan Lal, a member of the Hindu community and owner of the Sindh Public School, was accused of passing blasphemous remarks by a student.
The mob vandalised the school and at least five shops in Jilani Market owned by members of the Hindu community, while also desecrating the Sacho Satram Das temple.

In the first case registered against the rioters, 45 people have been booked under Section 295 of the Pakistan Penal Code (injuring or defiling place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class).

Of these 45, officials said, 22 people have been identified while 23 remain unidentified.

In the second case, 150 people – 27 identified and 123 unidentified – have been accused of blocking roads and disrupting vehicular traffic.

A total of 23 people – 12 identified and 11 unidentified – have been nominated in the third case which pertains to ransacking and damage to property.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Sukkur Additional Inspector General of Police Dr Jamil Ahmed said all three cases have been registered on behalf of the state.

“This is a warning to all such miscreants that no one will be allowed to challenge the writ of the state,” he said.

Dr Ahmed later took to Twitter to announce that five of the 61 identified accused have been arrested.

Allegations and agitation

A student of the SPS, Muhammad Ihtisham, had complained to his father that the school owner had allegedly passed derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

In a video that went viral on Sunday, Ihtisham said he had complained to other teachers about the remarks but he was told to keep quiet. “I then approached my family,” he said.

On Saturday, protesters gathered at the A-Section Police Station and demanded the police to register an FIR against Lal. According to the FIR, a copy of which is available with The Express Tribune, it was registered late on Saturday night.

For the better part of Sunday, the city administration and law enforcers failed to act even as thousands of supporters of Mian Mithoo held a sit-in on the main roads and marched towards the school.

Mian Mithoo has in the past been accused of facilitating forced conversions of Hindu girls in the region. The main protest, which attacked the Sindh Public School, was allegedly led by his elder brother, Mian Aslam.

For his part, Mian Mithoo told The Express Tribune that he knew nothing about the incident.

In one of the videos that went viral on Sunday following the riots, Mian Aslam is seen leading a charged mob. But Mian Mithoo, a former member of the National Assembly, denied any involvement.

“I did not lead the protest,” he told The Express Tribune. “I was in Ubaro in a meeting,” he explained, adding that he was unaware of the situation in Ghotki. “I don’t have any idea. I just heard someone [a Hindu] passed comments against our Prophet (PBUH).”

Ghotki’s Hindu community finally breathed a sigh of relief on Sunday night as political and religious leaders sat down in the Sacho Satram Das temple and assured them of their full support.

Replace 'Sindh' with 'Bihar', 'Hindu' with 'Muslim' and 'Temple' with 'Mosque', by now there would be 600 replies. Opposite would happen if this were an Indian site/forum, after all feigning ignorance when faced with uncomfortable truths is something we are masters at. Tells a lot about human psychology in the subcontinent, doesn't it? Indians want to reform Pakistanis and vice versa, Muslims want to reform Hindu society and vice versa. Both sides want to find faults in the other community but never look within. In fact many take sadistic pleasure when the 'others' in their nation are shown their place. Indians want to pretend everything is OK in Kashmir, Assam while Pakistanis feel that forceful conversion of minorities, destruction of temples, constitutional discrimination are fake news, propaganda by the enemy. Nobody attempts to be in the shoes of the persecuted lot and see the world through their prism.

Worldwide problem but this region is worst, truly beyond redemption. Toxic mix of illiteracy, intolerance, religious extremism and hyper-nationalism, proportion may vary among the South Asian states but nevertheless end product is sinister. While rest of the civilized world is accepting mistakes and course correcting our societies/nations are in free fall. No redeeming feature in this part of the world, just a burden on the planet and never can we be role model states in any facet be it innovation, economy, politics, education, culture, healthcare, sports, law enforcement, environment, tolerance. Many African nations we generally wouldn't want to associate ourselves with, many West Asian monarchies provide more value to the world, at least many among them have their graphs pointed upwards.

Desis in general love talking about human rights, XYZphobia, persecution, racism etc, funnily even when it comes to first world European countries who have come a long way since the end of WW-II. Mostly our concerns and activism have ulterior motives, we rarely mean it. There is a minority that places humanity above all and is genuine about human rights but minuscule with no voice or position were it can enforce positive changes.

Don't let Pak become a Hindu hating country like India has become a Muslim hating one. I see that IK never speaks on such issues or the treatment of Chinese Muslims instead preferring to play dumb. Sindh has a wonderful culture of Hindu-Muslim tolerance that must be preserved. These ignorant and uneducated people start destroying without even knowing the facts. Frustrated with their own lives they see blasphemy everywhere. Where are the likes of Zaid Hamid now when Pakistani non-Muslims are attacked? Not a word from a hypocrite and hater of the west like him.

Apparently lives of Muslims in Bharat are more valuable than lives of Hindus in Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

And vice versa. BJP leaders don't care about minority victims of lynching, in fact some even declare the alleged perpetrators as innocent beforehand or garland the suspects. When it comes to minorities in Pakistan, they want to point fingers and prove their moral superiority, winning online arguments and PR battles is more important than actual empathy for the victims, this is a South Asian cultural problem right now.

Any statements or tweets by Imran Khan on this issue?

Yes. Apparently this incident is all about Kashmir.

PM Imran says Ghotki incident an attempt to sabotage his UNGA address

Addressing a press conference, the prime minister said he condemns the attack on a Mandir in Ghotki which came at a time when he was due to address the world body.

"Ghotki incident is a conspiracy to sabotage my address to the UNGA," said the prime minister who is due to leave for Saudi Arabia on Thursday.

After concluding his visit to the kingdom, the prime minister would leave for the United States where he said his meeting with President Donald Trump is scheduled to take place on Monday.

"If anybody from here (Pakistan) is involved (in the attack), he is an enemy of Pakistan and Kashmir," said Khan.

Any statements or tweets by Imran Khan on this issue?

Any tweet by Modi about that Muslim young kid was killed of heart attack due to stress caused by Hindu lynching Mob? or he is busy sending his army to murder, rape, kill and torture Kashmiri Muslims?

You seriously can't take morally high ground when you directly and indirectly support RSS ideology.

Imran is having unhealthy obsession with kashmir. Every issue he faces, he turns the focus towards Kashmir.

PTI seems to be using Kashmir as a weapon in order to cover up every failure. Clever I must say and the blind PTI followers are also falling for it.

LOL Rich coming from Modi worshippers..... chaiwala won an entire elections by using Pakistan.

Those living in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Also Pakistan isn't India where cow lynchers get special pat on the backs by politicians. Already the law is taking its course against people who tried to desecrate Hindu temples.

This is the same obsession you had when 40 of your troops were blown apart.

Now it's our time

What Imran says is right but he's giving his speech a lot of unnecessary hype. As we've seen so far, Pak has a credibility issue and not many care about the Hitler rants. He escalated too soon with no favorable result. It has come to a stage where lifting a curfew will be considered a face saving success for Pakistan with 370 repeal firmly a forgotten story. Could be a win win for both countries if India lifts curfew.

Imran Khan Alleges 'Ghotki Attack' Was To Sabotage His UN Speech

"The incident I have seen in Ghotki village, whoever did it, I condemn the attack on our Hindu community strongly. This was done to sabotage my appearance at the UN. Our constitution treats everyone equally. So, whoever is doing this is against our religion and Constitution. Now when we are fighting for Kashmir, India will now see this attack and say such attacks happen within Pakistan also," he says in the tweet posted by a Pakistani user.

Ghotki attacks on Hindu community conspiracy to foment communal unrest probe finds

A probe committee formed to unearth the facts surrounding the violence which broke out in Ghotki earlier this month has found that the attacks were a conspiracy to "foment communal riots in the area", according to a report released by the human rights ministry on Friday.

A fact finding delegation was formed on the directives of Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari after a general feeling of resentment was observed among the Hindu community.

The resentment arose following a blasphemy accusation which led to violence and vandalisation of Hindu temples in the district, as well as the mysterious death of a student in Larkana which remains unsolved.

The team includes the following members:

Lal Chand Malhi, an MNA and parliamentary secretary for human rights
Chaila Ram, the ex-president of Pakistan Hindu Council
Ali Palh, an advocate and Sindh human rights defender
Kirshan Sharma, a civil society activist
Baghi Soomro, a social welfare worker
Mukhtiar Ahmed Abbasi, a human rights defender
Sattar Ranghejo, a human rights defender
Baghwan Das Bheel of the Bheel Lawyer Forum
Kanwal Ijaz, a women's rights activist
Ishaque Thri, a journalist
Ishaque Soomro, a journalist
Fida Hussain Chochan of the Citizen Journalism Network
Bota Masih, a social welfare worker
Mehrunissa Baloch, a social welfare worker
Fareeda Channa, a social welfare worker
Radha Bheel, a social welfare worker
Other members of civil society and Sindh human rights defenders
Meetings
The team visited Ghotki, Sukkur and Larkana to probe the incidents that took place and to find out what apprehensions the local community members have.

At the Sant Satram Dham temple in Ghotki, the delegation met community leaders and assured them protection and justice for the Hindu community and described the attacks as a "conspiracy to undermine the communal harmony in the area".

The community demanded an impartial inquiry into the alleged blasphemy case so that "fair action" may be taken in accordance with the law. It questioned how a teacher, who has been teaching students for the last thirty years — a majority of them being Muslims — could commit blasphemy.

"They also demanded stern action against the accused who attacked the temple, looted shops, tried to violate sanctity of homes" and caused an adverse law and order situation leading to fear and harassment among the community, according to the report by the ministry.

Appreciation for local Muslims who "came to their rescue and guarded their homes overnight, defeating the miscreants" was also shown by the Hindu delegation.

The team also met the Ghotki Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Farrukh Ali, who briefed them regarding the incidents and the current law and order situation. He assured the delegation the police would ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future.

Findings
Meetings with "various impartial people" were also held. "It appeared during the discussion with administration and civil society that the attack on the temple and riots were planned a night earlier".

According to the delegation's findings, "there were reports of political motivation, with ulterior motives and a few political personalities were backing the miscreants".

Notan Lal, the teacher accused for blasphemy, "was active in supporting a political party in the recent Ghotki by-elections", the report said.

The fact-finding delegation was also of the view that "police were lenient while applying relevant sections in the FIR" and that they did not take into account that the attacks "were planned and a few influential persons were involved".

According to the report, the police "took their all-out efforts to control the situation, however, few concessions were made to cool it down".

Recommendations
The team has recommended that a judicial probe be ordered to ascertain whether the blasphemy law was misused against Lal. The probe should also determine if the ensuing riots "were not a result of planned conspiracy to disturb the peace of Sindh".

The probe must also shed light on the recurrent complains of the Hindu community, the team concluded.

Section 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code along with Section 295-A is recommended to be applied in the blasphemy case against miscreants who attacked the temple. Under Section 295-A, the punishment is imprisonment for a term which may extend to ten years, or a fine, or both.

The administration has been instructed to not hesitate to call paramilitary forces to control such incidents in future.

The judgment given by the Supreme Court on June 19, 2014 regarding the protection of minorities "must be implemented in letter and spirit", it was further recommended.

India summons Pak official, lodges protest over abduction of 3 Hindu girls

The external affairs ministry summoned a senior official of the Pakistan high commission on Friday to lodge a strong protest over recent cases of abduction of minor girls from the Hindu minority, people familiar with developments said.

The Pakistani official was informed of India’s “serious concerns” about such incidents, said a person who declined to be identified. The development came against the backdrop of bilateral relations being at the lowest point in recent years following tensions over Kashmir and other issues.

According to reports, two minor girls, Shanti Meghwad and Sarmi Meghwad, from the Hindu minority group were abducted on January 14. They belong to Umar village in Tharparkar district of Pakistan’s southern Sindh province, which has a large Hindu population.

In another incident, a minor Hindu girl named Mehak was abducted from Jacobabad district of Sindh on January 15.

“Pakistan has been informed about the grave concerns expressed by various quarters of Indian civil society at such shocking and deplorable incidents involving minor girls from the minority Hindu community,” said the person cited above.

“The incidents have been strongly condemned and India asked for the immediate safe return of the girls to their families,” the person added.

India has lodged several protests with Pakistan in recent months over the alleged abduction and forcible marriage of women from the Hindu minority.

Does Blasphemy law also protect Christian, Hindu and Jewish God(s)? Or is it only applicable to Islam?

My understanding was it goes for all religions. From Wikipedia:

"The Pakistan Penal Code, the main criminal code of Pakistan, punishes blasphemy against any recognized religion, providing penalties ranging from a fine to death. From 1967 to 2014, over 1,300 people have been accused of blasphemy, with Muslims constituting most of those accused."

Hindu teacher sentenced to life imprisonment for ‘blasphemy’ in Ghotki

A sessions court in Ghotki has sentenced a Hindu man to life in prison on charges of blasphemy. Nautan Lal has been fined Rs50,000 as well.

Additional Sessions Judge Mumtaz Ali Solangi delivered the verdict on February 8, 2022. It has taken the court two years to pass the final order. Nautan Lal has been in jail since 2019 as an undertrial prisoner.

A written copy of the court’s verdict, available with SAMAA Digital, states that he was convicted under Section 265-H of the Code of Criminal Procedure. This section says: if the accused admits that he has been previously convicted as alleged in the charge, the court may pass a sentence upon him according to law, and if the accused does not admit that he has been previously convicted as alleged in the charge, the court may take evidence in respect of the alleged previous conviction, and shall record a finding thereon, and then pass sentence upon him according to law.

A case against Nautan Lal was also registered under Section 295-C (use of derogatory remarks, etc., in respect of the Holy Prophet (PBUH)) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

He has been sent back to Central Prison in Sukkur. In the past two years, his requests for bail have been rejected twice.

India - temples were attacked and destroyed by minorities during their rule. Now if Hindus demand temples back on their original site, it's considered discrimation and hate.

Pakistan - attacks on temples still going on when Hindus are in minority.

Is there one Pakistani here who says "yes they should do as they are told in a Muslim majority country"? Contrast with....

But Pakistan doesn't claim to be secular, so it's all good.
:salute

No, it is not good, and I hope Pakistan get rid of this law, Pakistan do not need it, Muslims do not need it.

Also, many Pakistani are not trying to find an excuse to make Pak look good in this matter.

Pakistan will get rid of hindus before they get rid of this law.

Its astonishing how pakistanis are more interested in Hijab in India than actual pakistani lives in pakistan.

LOL

No!

Pakistani aren't getting rid of Hindus, I hailed from a province where there are many Hindus, so relax.

As I said, not many on this thread is trying to sugarcoat this law as you have many times tried to sugar coat "Love Jihad", "hijab", "cow slaughter, "appeasement', "modi', "yogi', the list is endless when it comes to defend bigotry against minority in India- so think before you go on lecturing Pakistan and Pakistanis.

One country is trying to get out of radicalism while other is finding excuse to dive into :)

Over the years, what I have seen was, the hatred towards india superceeds the love towards pakistan for some pakistanis specially non residential ones. That's a sad affair but I guess, it is more fun to criticize india or the west than feeling solidarity with the people that are back home.

Hatred is towards Hindus in general.

Why else will Pakistnais destroy the temple?

Think about it. Anything done towards the teachers - people can explain that. But what is the explanation for what happened to temple.

It has emerged that the 11th grade student has confessed that he lied and that the teacher never committed blasphemy. The student said he was angry as the Hindu teacher had scolded him for not handing in assignment.
