I have deleted whole bunch of posts here making accusations of racism etc - we will not allow this kind of stuff. Discuss Moeen's performance if you like but stick to that only.
 
Mo batted brilliantly in the last Test but his bowling leaves a lot to be desired he will get away with it this summer because the pacers will clean up against Pakistan but in India I have a feeling he will be exposed as a bowler

Isn't this what everone said last time he played India.
Even in that series he seemed to miss out on man of match awards.

His 2 centuries have both come against Sri Lanka that should tell you how good a batsmen he is. His bowling which is what he mainly is in the side for was awful. If he got wickets in India it would be because of batsmen trying to attack hin and not good bowling more than likely

that was his first series as a bowler and the Indians underestimated him that humiliation will have been eating away at them for 2 years. In India the pressure will be on Mo to take the bulk of the wickets and I see the same happening to him what happened to him in the UAE.

Anyone who think he is a good bowler should look at the UAE series vs Pakistan.

Both his centuries have been full of quality and that tells me he is a very capable batsman. Nothing is stopping "ATG" Cookie from scoring a few runs in this series, for example.

Him getting wickets is what matters and he has almost 70 of them, to go with his 1000 test runs which is a pretty decent tally after 25 tests. Especially, when he isn't even utilized in the best manner.

His 1st century was good bo doubt. But this 2nd one had some drop catches and he was facing some tired lankan bowlers but I'll give him credit where it's due.

Don't expect him to get many wickets against us we seem to have foundthe balance of how to play him, knowing when to attack and knowing when to be defensive. Indian batting line up is good don't expect them to make the same mistakes as they did in 2014
 
Both of Moeen's hundreds will feature in Wisden's 'Greatest Innings of All-time'.

Twice before his century, once after that. How many centuries can you name that have featured no dropped catches?

We're easily the best batting lineup against spin these days and Younis Khan is an ATG batsman who eats spinners whole. Of course no English spinner will be troubling us anytime soon.

India were giving fifers to Dean Elgar and Simon Harmer. If the pitches remain the rank turners that they have been, I expect Ali and Rashid to do well.

Yhh true we should have no problems with him but this is Pakistan :)). We will definitely need to target ali as I don't see us scoring at such a fast rate against pace.

I don't think they will produce rank turners this time, also Ali was struggling in UAE so don't think just because elger and harmer took wickets that ali will
 
I don't know why people are pointing towards the UAE series to prove that Moeen is a poor bowler. He actually performed better in that series compared to the more highly rated and established Nathan Lyon who averaged 140 odd in the 2014 series lol. The likes of YK toy with off spinners in the UAE so it is harsh to put Moeen down as a bowler based on that series. Yes, he isn't world class but he isn't as bad as some of the posters make him out to be here. Definitely a handy cricketer for England.

Good post. He's not a great player but he's done well for himself and I can easily see him playing 50+ tests for England.

Pitches in the UAE are nowhere as helpful for the spinners as pitches in India are.

They are still helpful for spin bowler even England was trying to get more than one spinner in. See the last day of the 3rd test against England for how helpful the pitch can be for spinners
 
Good performance by Moeen.

Overrated a lot, underrated a lot.

Useful cricketer though.

Agree - fair play to moeen for cashing in.

He is a good player to have in the side and hopefully he continues to improve - both in terms of skill and consistency.

I like his attitude - always puts the England team first - not selfish

Our batsmen are walking wickets against spin.
 
Very very poor today. In fact he's had a few poor Test series's. I can see why he plays ODIs as his spin is very handy, but you can't play him as a front-line spinner when in fact he's a part-timer in the most hardened form of Cricket and expect him to spin a web ala Swann/Ashwin.

Not playing Rashid has baffled me no end.
 
Hang on, if you don't give a spinner enough time to work on batsman you have no chance.
He is got mostly top class batsmen out at critical times in games.
Today he was given 2 overs then basically used to get closer to the new ball, that's not how you treat spinner of his class. Poor captaincy.
Treat him like a proper spinner.......looking forward to him playing his bunnies in India :snack::runaway:
My indian friends always laugh when I say this don't know why :shrug
 
Moeen needs to be dropped ASAP.

His bowling has been poor since at least last summer. The Aussies treated him with absolute disdain, and most of his wickets there were due to Aussie brashness/overconfidence against him. Followed that up with a phainty in the UAE. And it looks like Misbah is licking his chops at the prospect of getting through the pacers to face Moeen again.

If they don't trust Rashid in tests, they should honestly play five seamers as there seem to be a number of decent ones for England to pick from. At the moment Moeen is wasting a spot in the team (cue a 7-fer in the second innings)

If that's the case then he should get a look in... I was going by the UAE series where he bowled very well one day when the pitch was deteriorating, while on other days, he didn't look remotely close to troubling the batsmen.
 
Moeen was getting some drift but little turn as you'd expect on Day 1 of a Lord's Test. Averages above 100 with the ball in Tests this year.

I don't know what England do as Rashid bowled worse in the UAE averaging 69 and taking one less wicket. However he bowled decently vs SL.

Rashid is still woefully mediocre.

Simon Kerrigan should he recover, or Borthwick as a part timer would be our best bet for now. Or any other spinner. Sick of Rashid being given the second slot, and Ali I think is a decent part-timer, but not worth it.
 
I hope Moeen Ali takes a hat trick today and gets a century (at Lords!!) but England loses. :srt
 
England should pick Rashid he's much more of a wicket taking threat. Moeen purple patch with the ball looks well and truly over.

Hope other batsmen don't get inspired from Misbah by taking him lightly and throwing their wickets away, that's how he took all those wickets against India.
 
2 lucky wickets today. Think India will take him apart in the winter no matter how much Indian posters tell me that they are weak against spin

Indians can fall against spin. Can go either way.

In uae on decent pitches he was carted everywhere. If India show patience and wait for the bad balls that will come they will be fine.

He doesn't even have a plan. He just tries to dart it in and hope for the best. Rarely flights the ball or even spins it tbh. Only being picked to increase batting depth
 
He somehow catches up some big fishes every now and then. So he's worth to have till his golden arm stop working!!
 
Ali did well today. Other than Woaks no one looked like taking a wicket. To get the two big guns was good going from Ali considering he's hardly bowled this year.
His batting in the first innings looked fluent, he can count himself very unlucky to be given out like that.
 
Lol if only Rasheed was playing too, 13/22 Pakistanis in the game lol.
Pak should win this now. Cook and Root are the key, the rest will flop in due course.
 
Moeen Gets only the best batsman, today Misbah and Younis only if the rest of the bowlers could back him up.

So so far, Moeen has got the best Indian, Australian, Sri Lankan, Pakistani batsmen......
If only the others could brush up the tail then England would be no one team!
 
Shouldn't be playing next match but he could be mvp in India: knows how to go down the wicket
 
He is like another Afridi to be honest, bats good once in a blue moon, his batting is pretty poor, no consistency in scoring runs on a regular basis

England don't need a spinner given how poor we are against pace.

England don't have any spinner who can trouble our batsmen, they will all get whacked.

Rashid replacing Ali would be some challenge for our batsmen.
 
England should attack Pakistan with Anderson, Broad, Woakes, Finn and Stokes, given our vulnerability against pace.

No spin means no comfort-zone for Pakistan.
 
I expect him to be dropped but is that fair for playing one bad shot.
How many others have done consistently bad but not dropped.
Just like Shah, Bopara and many others in the past if he is dropped.

He is in the side as a bowler and he took out the two best Pakistan batsmen.

Afridi has got test 100 vs Kumble and was a merciless savage against the chucker offie
Moeen Ali can only dream of that.

Dreadful bowling again, but got two cheap wickets due to reckless shots.
 
If anything, the shot that Moeen hit with England 5 down and chasing 280 in Lords, should have been the end of his test series.

But England probably short of options and cant really choose much.
 
England only bowl him against top batsmen just think how many wickets he would have if they actually gave him some overs! It would be good to see complete list of batsman he has got out, how many big fishes 80% possibly. He is playing as a bowler at number 7 or 8 so he can do haymakers
 
Misbah needs to stop throwing his wicket away to this guy. He turns into Afridi everytime Moeen starts bowling.
