Moeen Ali - Performance Watch

England should try and move Moeen up to bat at say #5 and look for another spin option. Mooen can continue to bowl but clearly is not a very good bowler. Decent enough though
 
Moeen is good enough to bat in the top 6 for England much better than Ballance and Vince. But his bowling isnt strong enough to be considered englands main spinner. If i was England id pick Moeen as a batting all rounder put him in the top order and pick Rashid as a spinner. It would improve their batting and bowling a lot

Think he's quite likely to get a temporary position at least 1 higher this winter for England to fit in the spinners on their India and Bangladesh tours.
 
One of Moeen's better series, even if he fails with the bat tomorrow.
 
Vince should be dropped and Ali moved at least one place up the order, with Rashid as the new spinner & no.8 bat.
 
I've always maintained this guy was a far better batsman than bowler, and was surprised why he couldn't cut it with the bat but kept chipping in with the ball.

Unfortunately he decided to prove me right this series. Not really that unfortunate though, since long term he was a very good option for our batsmen to tee off against. :yk2
 
Moeen's form with the bat seems to have picked up.

Wouldn't have him as the primary spinner though. May be worth bringing in Gareth Batty as a stop gap.

What a classy player. Nice to see all his detractors coming back and praising him, with pie on their face.

Now if only he can better his accuracy with the ball.
 
Moeen would easily make the 15 man squad of a world XI across all formats.

He's having to learn the art of spin while playing Test cricket itself which is very tough but with more experience will get better, has always been a batsman first

Definitely. He's an all-round good player. Hope he bats in the top four in all formats against Bangladesh.

Most people criticize his bowling at least from what I've seen and I think that is a valid criticism.

Pakistan are the best players of spin on the planet, he was always going to find it tricky against them. But you see Moeen has always been a batsman, his bowling got better whilst playing alongside Ajmal for Worcester and he remains a work in progress who is a batsman first but a part timer with the ball who is still learning his craft and spinners tend to peak late as it is but is still good enough to be classified as a Batting A/R.

And [MENTION=129948]Bilal7[/MENTION] is correct, Constructive Criticism is fine but things have quietened down as of late because Moeen has been doing well but he has been vilified due to his beard more then anything while Indians tend to rejoice in his failures after Mo made their batsman look like a bunch of amateurs.

For a Batsman who was not meant to play at the Test level according to some, most views etc stemming from the fact that they don't like Mo having a dari, Mo had our fans quaking in their boots many a time during the Pak/Eng Test series; his scalp was among the prize blows.

Looks like delivered in first inning but still Eng is in danger zone with their second inning collapse.

Seems to have turned the corner in terms of performance, if he doesn't turn up in one discipline of his game in a Test, he certainly does with the other discipline.
 
Fear the beard.

Not the greatest of spinners but batsmen cannot underestimate him either.
 
Moeen is a PT spinner who has done well. If he could get the angle of the seam right, he would improve markedly as at the moment he puts enough revs but not the right kind of spin. The other thing is his lack of concentration and the obligatory bad ball an over.
 
Another impressive innings from Moeen. He has really turned it around with the bat in the last 4-5 Tests after starting the Pakistan series in miserable fashion.

Looks very composed and mentally in a good place.
 
Brilliant player. Can bat, bowl, catch and is great for off-field PR as well. One of England's current MVPs and a little more consistency with the ball will see him being rated as the best all-rounder in the world.
 
He started out a batsman who could bowl a bit, not even as a batting all rounder but now looks like a genuine all rounder. One of the most exciting guys to see. I think Ajmal was instrumental in shaping his career as a bowler during his stint with Worcestershire.

He should bring out the doosra at some point in this series. Might be risky but his off-break is as clean as they come so he can afford to take one for the team even if he is called.

I have always backed him from day one in this thread, followed his career since his Warwickshire days when he was making the headlines. Many questioned his ability just when he was starting out but the keywords are investment and patience, we've seen Mo struggle with that short stuff but he came back stronger after his failures, we've seen that awful dismissal at Lords vs Pakistan and he came back from that.

These are just examples but if we go all the way back to his Worcester days there was a time when Mo didn't know where his off stump was and would get out leaving deliveries, but he would come back stronger from that and work on his weakness.

He's always had that work ethic and drive to not quit, work hard and overcome his issues from a very young age. Even when in good form for Worster, he'd take time out of his schedule and play club games in the Birmingham Premier Leagues in between FC matches to further his Batting prowess.

The ability has always been there, it's just a matter of adapting to the international level and gaining valuable experience. The other issue which he has had and many tend to not factor it in is that they undermine his talent as a batsman, he's not someone who should be batting at 7 or 8; it undermines Mo and as much as it has been a challenge adapting to the Test Level I think it has been a bigger challenge mentally to be a bit of a utility batsman used as a make shift opener or a lower order Batsman who's required to get quick runs when he has the potential to be a proper top order Batsman, plus he's rarely had to bat in those positions at the domestic level.

Others have come into the team with a defined role but with Mo it has never been the case. Is he a batsman? Is he a batsman who bowls a bit? Is he a Bowler who bats a bit? Is he a specialist spinner? The reality is he's a proper top order Batsman by nature and a part time spinner who has improved his craft in leaps and bounds but still a work in progress, he's learning to bowl at the Test Level effectively but does well enough to be used as a specialist at times. Moving forward Mo the Batsman needs to be given more confidence and it would also be useful if ECB hire another spin bowling coach.

Also, it has to be said is there a nicer bloke then Mo in cricket? he's the greatest sporting hero in Birmingham and inspiration for all the youth + adults, always there to help the vulnerable in our city or beyond, never gets angry at anyone and always happy to have a chat or help in any way he can. I'd say Moeen Ali is the embodiment of everything beautiful in Great Britain.

MOTM in his first test match in India and rightfully so. Batted maturely and got just rewards and bowled nicely even though he didn't pick up as many wickets as Rashid. India should fear the beard because he's on top of his game right now and high on confidence.

Have been his biggest fan since the start. He represents me if I were an overseas Pakistanis. All the passion, and commitment rolled into 1. Fab player. Was hoping for him to score just enough to keep his place but us still overcoming England in England, for a win/win situation. But he did more than just keep his place. Was spectacular at Edgbaston and the Oval.

Happens when there are three spinners in the XI and the other two are picked solely on their bowling skill.
 
Quality performance by Moeen today after three innocuous Tests. Started and ended the tour well.

After Root, he has been England's best batsman this series.
 
Moeen showing he isnt a frontline spinner but a genuine batsman in his own right. He should play as englands second spinning all rounder from now on.
 
He was dropped at 0, and this is a poor attack for Indian conditions with Mishraji, Ishant and Umesh.
 
Another quality hundred. Hope he makes a 200 so he can announce to the selectors that he's ready to be batting at #4 or #5. Should be a permanent fixture in England's test team from now on as a frontline batsman and second spinner, behind his buddy, Adil Rashid. Exactly how it should be.

Hopefully, he gets a few wickets to help make his hundred a match-winning one.

I know Ashwin was invisible so you might have missed him but he was playing. Jadeja was also playing, I believe.

While I've understood the criticism he's had over the years to an extent many people have been very unfair towards him. People easily brush aside how poorly he has been handled by England, he's never really had a role in the team; Mo has batted everywhere from no.1 -no.9 and has been treated as specialist spinner, part-time spinner, a spinner who bats a bit etc

England have pushed him down the order to accommodate others and then promoted to cover for their failures, instructed to get quick runs, be patient blocking out for draws, see the new ball off and conceal the tail; if you factor this in then his performances have been remarkable! he remained modest throughout and does what the team ask him to do but England treating him like a bits and pieces talent has severely affected his elevation, if they give him a genuine role I believe genius will flourish to the point where people begin to look at him beyond this man with a beard whom Pakistani's hope to do well for this reason! Moeen doesn't deserve such disrespect and he's a top top bloke

His place in tests is locked down now. He's one of the first names on the teamsheet. What he now needs to focus on is the ODI format and needs to carve out a niche for himself down at #7. Consistent, quick cameos along with economical bowling spells will ensure he plays in the next CT and beyond.

How about the supporters though?

You can hardly blame the haters for hating on him, if supporters support him no obvious reason.

Let me ask you an honest question.

If Moeen Ali's name was Chandrakumar Patel and he sported a huge beard and prayed to Brahma all day, would you be just as vocal supporter and say "MashAllah" at all times.

If the answer to above question is no, then you know where you stand in life.
 
I am fan but he is very average. Mentally he is weak, throws his wicket away more often than not, and sees 50's as a great achievement.

I have no problem whatsoever in saying that I love that Moeen Ali is a visible Muslim and is playing for England. He's also a good player which has nothing to do with his beard.

But cricket is not about being a Muslim or not, and all Kumars and Ali's should be looked at objectively.

I apologized if my post irked you but I was just pointing out the flaw in your argument, when you talked about haters. Supporters have the same biased attitude, so it works both ways.

Then many of legendary innings will be missed.

One of the greatest knocks ever....Lara's 151* itself had an easy super duper simple chance dropped when he was about to finish off the game for WI.

On topic, this knock was good overall. Good in application. Pitch was dodo though. Kept making the same mistakes against short ball.

With his current flaws, I dunno if he even will be in English test team a year from now. But then he can always develop his test batting.

Has really good potential in LOI.

They should be rightly missed.

Those are dodgy innings. If tough chances were missed then that's an exception.
 
In the process of saving yet another game for England. Thank you India for making another super series for Mo possible.
 
Lol. Anyways, a good series for him with the bat. Not so much with the ball but that won't be a problem anymore since he's now playing as a specialist batsman who can bowl some spin on the side.
 
Problem with him is that he bats like Gower one moment and like Afridi the next. That is what I was referring to while pointing out his inconsistency with the bat.

Also needs to learn to play balls that are chest high. Going to get a proper working over in Australia if he doesn't improve his technique against the short ball and we could have an another Jonathan Trott situation.
