I just looked for M Hafeez stats as a T20 batsman in last 2 years. And I was more than surprised. At his beloved batting positions (i.e. opening / No. 3) Professor has managed only 1 50 in 16 innings and he averages 13.43 @ 93 S/R against all teams excluding Zim & assosiates. Dissecting the stats a bit further, he has managed to avg 17.37 @ 97.20 batting first while he has been miserable chasing totals i.e. averaging 9.50 @ 86.36 S/R. How can anyone justify these batting stats is beyond me. Here are the stats ( http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/en...4;spanval2=span;template=results;type=batting )

Even Afridi has managed more runs (265 vs 215), more average (16 vs 13.43), and obviously more S/R (177.77 vs 93.07) than the "senior" Professor..

Hafeez still occupies one spot as an opening batsman / No. 3 in playing XI. He fails as an opening batsman, next game he is the No 3. Couple of games he fails there, he is brought in as an opening batsman. Hafeez as a No. 3 has averaged 10.75 with S/R of 84.31 in the same period.

Shahzad was dropped despite having more runs (316 vs 215) and average (24.30 vs 13.43) than the Professor. Even "tuk tuk" Shehzad's strike rate of 117.47 is better than Professor's 93.07. In my opinion, Shahzad's dropping from the squad is justified.

The next question is. Has Hafeez got the worst stats in all T20 top order batsman in last 2 years among all teams (including assosiates)?

Hafeez should be the first one dropped from the squad alongwith Khurram Shehzad. And M Rizwan needs to come in place of Hafeez. He is probably the best No. 3 option Pakistan has at the moment as Haris Sohail is injured

I hope Saj can highlight the batting failures of Hafeez in his tweets ...

It's funny how Akmal, shehzad always get highlighted while this guy always slips under the radar.

But, but, but, surely his 'morals, values, principles and integrity' should be enough for him to attain lifetime membership in the team. So what if 99 times out of 100, when the going gets tough Professor timidly trudges back to the pavilion after being repeatedly let down by all the 'blessed facets' of his game.

I think the only one surprised about Hafeez is the OP. Neither him nor shehzad merit a place

Hafeez, Afridi and to some extent Malik need to be dropped. Hafeez and Afridi though need to be shown the door immediately. Both can be replaced with Imad and nawaz. These two have been a cancer to Pakistan Cricket. We cannot have mediocre players as role models for youngsters especially when the players have lots of power in the dressing room. Just to accommodate Hafeez at the top, khurram manzoor's career is now over

But but but Hafeez is the only fluent batsman when gets going on :hafeez2

If you check Pak's last 10 T20I matches then Afridi deserve his place on merit.

I still maintain...Hafeez is the best bat in the Pakistani line up....On flat tracks he is head and shoulders above the rest and on green tracks he is pretty much the same.

Yeah his bowling gave him the edge and without that he seems a little lackluster but still if his replacements are Khurram and Sharjeel...he needs to be handsdown on every Pakistani starting line up

As I said earlier Shehzad was right to cry about himself being in the team on the basis of performance.

Hafeez pretty much has a free ride in current international side and doesnt matter if he makes no contributions to the team.

Strike rate wise Hafeez is the 3rd worst top order (position 1-6) batsman since 2014 - only Rath from Hong Kong and Patil from the UAE are worse. Yuvi is number 5 on that list.

I supported him fully for Asia Cup.

If he doesn't play last game he should be axed.

If he plays last game and does not score 40+ runs than he should be axed.

In case he gets axed along with Khurram than Babar & Fakhar should make pakistan team in case Babar hasn't recovered yet than Ahsan should be given a go.

My guess is that Waqar will ask for Babar Azam.

In last 3 months best limited orders innings played by Pakistani batsman.

1. Babar Azam (in an odi vs Nz)

2. Mohammad Hafeez ( as above )

3. Umar Akmal (T20i vs NZ)

I hear a lot of talk on "we don't have replacements" lol we were saying the same while Misbah was being wasted in domestic cricket and nobody bothered to include in the team until he was 34. talent is there but trust pcb and selectors for ignoring them and destroying their careers. where are mukhtar, fawad alam, bilal asif? nobody drops players after few failures like we do.

Who does merit a place? The only reason we come back to these guys is the replacements keep failing miserably.
The flaws of those discarded are clear. No point going back to them until they have a chance to rectify those flaws.

And the replacements are given same amount of chances? Replacements have the same backing from the management as they do?

Needs to be booted for the Asia Cup. Need in-form players, not people filling the sheets for the sake of it.

I'll take Fawad Alam over him any day

Geez that's bad. No other team would tolerate such tailender-esque performances from their openers.

He can never perform in difficult situations and in big games

That's another issue. He is a known bottler in big games along with Afridi (at least his batting)

But these batting stats are from last 2 years - and these include many bilateral series matches. Things are not looking rosy for Pakistan especially if we keep on persisting with Hafeez in top order for the upcoming WT20. This time every match is a pressure cooker situation as we have a tough group.

Haha.. At least Hafeez can say that I m not at the worst. Tomorrow should be last chance for Hafeez - if he fails (I.e. unable to score a big fifty at a T20 strike rate), he should be sent packing along with khurram..

It's the way he gets out which is most frustrating.

Rarely does he get dismissed in limited overs matches due to a very good delivery.

Hafeez gets a free ride in all forms of the game and some how has become the darling of all 3 captains.

My biggest issue with Hafeez is that he eats up way too many dots in the power play overs, is the worst runner in the team and more frustratingly Hafeez is no help whats so ever batting in the middle with younger players.

Hafeez is one of the main reason the batting has constantly failed in LOI's for the past 3 years

The highest run scorer for your team in this format
Come on guys give Afrid and Hafeez a break!
They will perform iA
Hafeez has made fifties in South Africa and India
His record in India is amazing
Two fifties at an amazing strike rate
He will do good iA!

How long can we live on past glories (and that too few and far between) ??? He is the highest scorer because of longevity, just as Afridi holds many records due to a long career. In World Cup 2015, Afridi had most career runs for Pakistan - yet it meant nothing. Indeed in last few years of his ODI cricket, Afridi was listed as highest run getter for Pakistan in the squad - but all such records were due to his long career - same goes for Hafeez. Hafeez was a force to reckon with when he was allowed to bowl. Without bowling, he is a big liability to the team - and his T20 scores in last 2 years show it. He should be the first one to get kicked out of the team.

Exactly the case, Hafeez has been the senior most top order batsman for Pakistan in last few years. Its natural for new comers and youngsters to look upto senior batsman when batting alongside them. E.g. Indian youngsters bat alongside someone like Kohli, Australians alongside Smith, NZ alongside Williamson etc and our youngsters look upto Hafeez - who is as bad as a T20 player can get.

The last match vs Bangladesh was prime example of selfishness of Hafeez i.e. he made 2 runs or so and took 11 balls for them. Was he batting on a minefield? He simply sucked all the momentum, while being the senior batsman he should have been taking charge of the proceedings.

It will be biggest mistake of Afridi & Waqar to take Hafeez to World T20. He simply needs to be axed and replaced by someone like M Rizwan.

Ahmed Shehzad should not go free from the blame. But its unfair to drop Ahmed Shehzad before Mohammad Hafeez from the ODI squad.

Both of them should be out if performance is the criterion.

One goes out and one remains in t20 team on basis of 50 overs performance , thats plain ridiculous.

Do you think PCB or selectors care???
How did Shehzad get dropped from the team? How does U Akmal keeps on dropping from squad every now and than?

It's always the media pressure that forces PCB & selectors to take notice. Somehow Professor has gone under the radar for his atrocious performances in T20 cricket. It may be due to the fact that he has been a decent batsman for Pakistan in ODI cricket so everyone forgets his dull performances in T20 cricket. In ODI he can take time to settle as an opening batsman and still make up for the run rate in later overs. In T20 he is always behind the run rate.

With media pressure, either Hafeez will have relook at his approach towards T20 games and try to rectify it OR selectors will be forced to drop him soon

Problem is, media is making and destroying players, which is wrong. Selectors should do their duty with pure honesty. Common example, Khurram Manzoor failed, when he failed at first match all channels started bashing selectors that why they dropped Shehzad? And now, Shehzad is coming back. Useless player replacing useless, i hope PCB aren't looking to bring back Ajmal and Gul :))

Selectors should not care about media, but the sad reality is our selectors don't bother to watch domestic matches, don't bother to watch performances, and they only do what media orders them. And that's why we are doomed.

We won't be able to bring stability in our team if we keep doing this rotation policy. :(

Should be the first one to go, has been doing nothing for a long time now in T20s. Given in T20s, top order is so important as it sets the tone, it's just unacceptable.

IMO Umar should be batting at 3, Sarfraz 4 and Malik at 5. Pick two openers to give a try. I wouldn't mind seeing Babar and Haris open for us in T20s when they get fit tbh, I think they could do the job in T20s.

If Hafeez is not dropped from World T20 squad based on his 2 years performance and horrible Asia cup stats, than it will only show how deep roots nepotism has and how senior culture is dominant in our team.

The above quoted post was from March 2016, so for Hafeez to still be around he must have scored a few 100s since then, anyone able to verify ?
