his best wasn't very good to begin with, but now it seems like he just given up

The only way Hafeez deserves to be in the team is if he is dropped down to 6 or 7 and bowls more than 5 overs every match.

Hafeez is still able to contribute to the team but he needs to change his batting approach which is too timid. His off spinners are much more valuable at the moment given that he is a big weapon against left handers. Yesterday he was very important in gaining control of things by getting the prize wicket of De Kock probably the best SA bat currently and in form.

A batsman playing at 6/7 has far lesser responsibility than one playing in the top 4. The primary responsibility is to get quick runs or take the lead on days when the top order fails. In any case it entails far lesser responsibility than the top 4. A number 6 or 7 getting out to a big or bad shot won't be as problematic as a number 3 or 4. Its not that he doesn't have the shots, its just his selfishness that makes him play defensively. At 6 or 7 he can play with a more carefree approach not worrying about failing to make a big score. A quick 20-30 at the end and 5-10 overs every game can make him a far more useful member for the team. I think that's a better solution for both the team and for Hafeez himself.

Exactly what I was saying.. They should drop him and go with someone younger... someone that there is a value to him in the long run...

I would still keep him for test matches.. maybe for another couple of years... but no use for him in limited overs cricket..

The thing with Hafeez is whenever I start thinking yes he should be out now he bowls a decent spell against some team that isn't good against spin. Pakistan needs to take a bold step with Hafeez. Hafeez is at this point only a specialist bowler. I would say Kagiso Rabada is a better batsman than him. Pakistan needs to play someone who will improve the team overall especially if Hafeez's role is that of an all rounder. I have no issue if Hafeez plays at 6-7 as a specialist bowler but he just isn't a good enough batsman. Also his bowling is nothing spectacular but he does a very good job on some days, Think tank needs to think of balance when it comes to Hafeez.

Hafeez should never open. He is very unreliable as an opener and with Fakhar the other opener, we dont want be to 10/2 in 5 overs. Azhar is a good foil for Fakhar and has much better technique and wont do any worse than Hafeez.

If you want to play Hafeez as an allrounder, he should compete for a spot with Shadab & Imad. Excluding Hafeez, we are already playing 5 bowlers and Malik/Harris can easily share 4-5 overs to provide cover.

I dont know why don't we get simple logic - stop accomodating players. Build a team around what you need for a winning formula.

yes, good call. hopefully sustainable. I think the most telling was what hafeez said in post match interview: I wanted to go out there and express myself fully.
These are not hafeez's words, but at least he believed them enough to play this way. It may go a long in clearing any self doubts.
But i do agree that 2019: pakistan need to be looking for replacements for him and malik. not because they must be dropped, but because its too risky to carry old players till that time and have them go out of form.
