Mohammad Hafeez steps down as Director of cricket [Post #225]

series is over, waiting for him to make another statement now

Professor's so called Professory got exposed. He needs to be axed for the selections of Hassan Ali, Mir Hamza, Sajid Ali, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf on this tour

This is weird.

When a series or a tournament ends, the final press conference is done by the teams captain. No matter who performed well in that series, who won or lost, the team captain has to show up to the press one final time and answer every question. Usually the coach or team director can sit with him in the press conference, but the captain himself has to be there aswell.

Mohammad Hafeez as team director, decided to show up and do the final press conference all by himself, acting as if he is the captain of the team.

Shan Masood was no where to be seen, which is quite weird. Whether Shan himself refrained or Hafeez stopped him, but this is some weird behavior.

Are some people interested in promoting themselves?

Let’s hope Hafeez doesn’t throw the batting coach under the bus after the horrific 4th innings performance from our batters…😆

Hopefully there will be accountability of Director after the Oceania tour, because this is embarrassing outplayed in T20s also.
Muhammad Hafeez said that before leaving for tour that he will take full responsibility of win/loss, time to face the music, from the onset he comes across a self centred egoistic and cocky.

So you want him to pass the blame on? Anyone willing to accept responsibility and take account for their teams performance is self centred egotistic and cocky?!

This guy and his conspiracy theories? Maybe he was protecting the captain from getting a 3-0 whopping and as a leader took charge and faced the heat in the kitchen!

Hafeez bhai is trying too many fancy things which are needless.

He needs to be a little friendlier with players to make them feel confident as most of them are young and new to international cricket.

Captains dont need protection. The reason why they are captain is because they are already protected

Captains always answer the press after the end of the series. Team directors dont show up at the end of the series and conduct a whole press conference alone.

Even if hafeez wanted to do a press conference, the captain should had been sittinf beside him aswell

What responsibility has he accepted, made a laughing stock after MCG that we were the better team, this reflects self centered and cocky approach

So another 3-0 for Hafeez as Director which can potentially turn out as 5-0.

Do Hafeez has proper coaching credentials?

Hafeez's tenure should end now. He has the worst possible start and now another series defeat. He has done nothing to improve this side TBH. He should get going

The sports ministry has asked the Pakistan Cricket Board not to offer a long-term contract to its incumbent director of cricket Mohammad Hafeez yet, who came into the role after the 50-overs World Cup last year.

The PCB had sent a copy of the contract for approval to the ministry of inter-provincial coordination, which oversees the sports sector.

“The contract was for a long term period but the board was told to just continue with the short-term arrangement with Hafeez which ends after the T20 series in New Zealand,” a reliable source said.

According to insiders, Hafeez as well as the other new coaching staff members came on board only after the assurance of getting long-term contracts.

“Now it appears (that) this is not going to happen, and as it is, the performance of the team has also been very bad under Hafeez and the other coaches, as they have lost all Tests in Australia and now the T20I series in New Zealand,” an insider said.

Hafeez was named the director of the Pakistan team along with new coaches Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal and foreigners Simon Helmot and Adam Hollioake for the Australian tour.

Another former Pakistan player, Yasir Arafat replaced Helmot as the high performance coach for the T20Is in New Zealand.

The new coaches came in after the PCB reassigned the foreign coaches Mickey Arthur, Grant Bradburn and Andrew Puttick to the National Cricket Academy after the World Cup.

All three refused to take up the new assignment and went on vacations. They have now resigned after an undisclosed financial deal with the PCB.

Recently, the sports ministry also stopped the board’s cricket management committee from holding a T10 league and as well as a meeting to form the new board of governors.

Yes there contract is till Feb 4, 2024. The power corridors have decided not to extend it making the mgmt. & coaches as scapegoat for the zillionth time

So another 3-0 for Hafeez as Director which can potentially turn out as 5-0.

Do Hafeez has proper coaching credentials?
Having proper credential is not a requirement in Pakistan if you know the right people in power.

Tbh Cricket is ultimately a results based business and the likes of Mohd Hafeez, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Adam Hollioke and the team's present fielding and fitness coach have shown nothing to push their case that they deserve a long term role so far.

It won’t do jack if you keep changing or hire all the coaches in the world or change captains at national level unless the base foundation gets fixed at grass-root level and quality infrastructure gets built.

What a disastrous tenure Hafeez had , completely humbled and shell shocked, I hope he resigns than to be sacked because after that nobody will take his punditry seriously

What has Hafeez to do anything when all the new players flopped?

All these new players were PSL stars of performed heavily in domestic cricket

When i said that Hafeez like Mickey and Saqi before would make no difference, some posters were critical. The issue isnt the players or the coaches, the rot is much deeper. Our systems havent kept up with the new World cricketing order and we have the idiots like Zaka and Sethi appointed as chairman for reasons that are political rewards and nothing to do with cricket.

Well with Zaka gone, this could signal the end of Hafeez and co in their respective roles.

Musical chairs are about to begin once again in Pakistan cricket.

When i saw Hafeez working with the spinners as if they were 10 year olds, i knew that he had no clue what he was doing.

Shortest tenure ever I guess, record might sound as 8-0 on a trot thankfully he took full responsibility

Mohammad Hafeez set to pack his bags after New Zealand T20Is: report

As soon as the 43-year-old will reach Pakistan, PCB would ask him not to continue
The journey of Pakistan men's Team Director Mohammad Hafeez will conclude after the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand, local media reported.

Hafeez, nicknamed Professor, had a contract with the side till December 15. As soon as the 43-year-old will reach Pakistan, PCB would ask him not to continue.

Meanwhile, it is also expected that other coaches and officials recruited by PCB during the ex-Management Committee Chairman Zaka Ashraf will also resign.

Hafeez's contract extension papers were sent to the offices of Patron Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar's and Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination but they did not extended the contract.

On January 19, Zaka Ashraf stepped down as the chairman of the PCB Management Committee during a meeting with the members. He announced that he had decided to tender his resignation as chairman and member of the MC.

In his concluding remarks, he thanked the PCB Patron for the confidence and trust reposed by him and extended his best wishes and prayers for the betterment of Pakistan cricket.

Chief Election Commissioner Shah Khawar will take over the PCB as chief till the general elections.

Ashraf became part of PCB's Board of Governors on July 6, he assumed his role as the Chairman by replacing Najam Sethi on the same day.

"I was working for the betterment of cricket but it is not possible for us to work in this way," he said as per the people present at the committee meeting.

“Now it is up to Prime Minister [Kakar], whomever he nominates [will take my place],” he added.

Earlier this week, the PCB Management Committee meeting in Karachi was postponed at the behest of the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination.

The agenda of the meeting included other matters including the formation of BOG.

Remember, Kakar had extended the term of the Ashraf-led Management Committee for three months in November 2023. The term was ending in the first week of February.

He’s getting sacked in the morning

Sacked in the morning

What a waste, he should have lost all 5 games with Babar and Rizwan on the bench. What did he gain by playing a so called full strength team in the 4 games he lost?

How blatant does the political interference need to be for ICC to act ?

The team director's contract is being handled by the PM's Office !

Obviously governing rules go out the window when you've PAK-IND matches to milk for every last $$$.

Hafeezs so called professory has been exposed. Hope no one dares calls him Professor again.

He would probably be a good coach/consultant for someone like Zimbabwe or UAE

Pakistan is a tough place to get a proper run if you have no coaching history

Yes, should have first got some experience and then applied for the job. But then he is a Professor and over-qualified.

I like Hafeez, he is professional and articulate. They should keep him on.

It's these semi professional lazy players that are the problem. There are mid 20 somethings coming through that have bad techniques and pot bellies. What do you expect?

Are you saying this based on just two series?

3-0 and now 5-0 is pretty dreadful reading. He has done nothing to press his case that he merited a long run.

His selections were horrible as well ie the selection of Faheem Ashraf, Sarfaraz Ahmed in test one, the selection of Hassan Ali, not selecting Wasim Jr for the test series, not selecting proper specialist spinners for the test series, bowing down to Rizwan's tantrums and letting him open the innings, persisting with the likes of Haris Rauf, Shaheen and Nawaz even though the series is lost.

We have not seen anything new or any semblance of hope in his tenure.

Let’s add Hafeez’s name to the list of coaches that are useless.

Mickey was ‘useless’ too. So was Saqlain, Misbah, Waqar…

Hmm. Are we sure they are the problem here?

You’d have to be very naive to take on any roles in the PCB. The only thing you get is a 6 month role and a ruined legacy from people who expect immediate miracles from a talentless bunch.

And then we are surprised that no decently qualified coach will go near us.

They are better off getting rid of everyone apart from Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen and starting again with 19/20 year olds.

Yep. Even if Hafeez isn't great and 8 games are too few to even make that call considering the team's struggles prior and being completely influx with the squads/captain change etc.

At the end of the day, no one coach is coming here and turning these guys into some unbeatable squad. Pakistan simply does not have enough talent and I think a lot of the guys are simply far too inexperienced such as Saim/Haris/Azam/Jamal/Abbas/Khurram/Abdullah etc... and what has made matters worse is their experienced core players struggling and being out of form.

Pakistan need to get a selector & coach and let them know they will have a long enough (say 3 years until 2027 WC) to build your team. No professional team in any sport around the world can have this much change up top and think it can translate to success at all.

Hafeez's tenure as a director/coach has not started well. whitewashed against Aussies and now 4-1 against NZ. This is not worth remembering. Hafeez should take up just 1 role and PCB should appoint some qualified and experienced coach instead.

After winning the 5th T20I against New Zealand, Shaheen Shah Afridi during the end of the series presser:

"When I played as a player with Hafeez, he always supported youngsters and has always tried to give his best for this team. If someone wants to practice extra or is not performing well, then Hafeez always backs him. You need such a person who backs you because when you are winning, everyone backs you. But when you lose, then at that time, if you have someone to back, you become stronger."

So Muhammad Hafeez record albeit a short one
P 8 W 1 D 0 L 7
--------------------
Surely enough sample size for any rookie to be rejected of permanent job. The next Chairman should swallow his pride and bring back Micky till Wt20 2024

Well honestly I am in favor of Hafeez as he is doing his job quite well.

However with this pathetic team combination nobody can do wonders. So I will give him time until the t20 World Cup 2024 with free hands. I am sure he will turn things in Pakistan favor!

He was director of cricket for what 5-6 weeks ? Alas thats what happens when you team up with guys like Zaka Ashraf.

Unfair to sack him for his coaching of the team on 1 test tour and 1 T20 tour as he was initially hired as Director of cricket. Should be given a chance as director and hire a long term coach for 3 years with a water tight contract, as all this instability is making it look like a clown circus with a revolving door atm.

Except, he doesn't have free hands. Trust me, they're tied. He's gotten awfully quiet about the bold statements that he made and now resorts to saying foolish ones. I also had faith in him. But he's not "him". He's not someone who can impose an authority. It was silly of me to imagine that he could, considering he didn't retire that long ago and many squad members have played directly with him as regular teammates. He probably doesn't make them feel like he's their superior here at all.

That is the issue in Pakistan cricket. They don't give you any authority but expect 100% results from you. But i believe hafeez is the guy who can turn the tables.

Hafeez had all the authority on these tours. He was the director/coach so has more authority than anybody else. But the results are very poor. Still, just 2 series are done and dusted but it won't stay for long that Hafeez has both roles or even 1.

‘Hafeez denied extension after poor term as team director’

Pakistan team director Mohammad Hafeez will not see an extension following the completion of his three-month tenure, marked by disappointing performances against Australia and New Zealand. Despite only securing a consolation victory in a T20I match, Pakistan endured defeats in three Test matches against Australia and four T20Is against New Zealand during Hafeez’s tenure.

After returning from the challenging tours, Hafeez met with acting Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shah Khawer, who is concurrently overseeing the board’s election process for a regular chairman to serve a full three-year term.

Sources revealed that Hafeez failed to impress the acting chairman with his performance, prompting discussions about the possibility of extending his tenure through the Ministry of Inter-provincial Coordination.

Hafeez, lacking formal coaching credentials or prior experience in the position, assumed the role of team director, succeeding South African Mickey Arthur amidst Pakistan’s lackluster performances in the Asia Cup and World Cup last year.

Initially appointed by former chairman of the PCB Interim Management Committee Zaka Ashraf for a three-month term, Hafeez’s tenure concluded on Jan 14. Despite Zaka’s recommendation for a four-year extension until the next World Cup, the IPC Ministry has not granted approval thus far.

Sources indicated that Hafeez attributed the team’s poor performances to senior players’ lack of focus, emphasising their inclination towards playing in foreign leagues over national duties.

Mohammad Rizwan openly criticised Hafeez’s strategies during Pakistan’s series against New Zealand, attributing the team’s setbacks to changes in the batting line-up.

Hafeez reportedly highlighted player performances and accountability to the acting PCB chairman, expressing frustration with senior players and attempting to integrate junior players into the squad to rejuvenate team dynamics.

However, the strategy failed to yield desired results.

Regarding his meeting with Director Pakistan Men’s Cricket Team Mohammad Hafeez, Mr Shah Khawar said:

“Hafeez met us along with chief selector Wahab Riaz and Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer and we had a general discussion regarding the team’s performances in Australia and New Zealand. He will furnish a formal report assessing the team’s performances and reasons for defeats in the Test and T20I series."

I think Hafeez has the right intentions but what was that dumb move to open with Haseebullah?

WI won a Test against Hafeez, enough to gauge Hafeez performance as Director

The Pakistan Cricket Board extends heartfelt gratitude to Mohammad Hafeez, Director Pakistan men’s cricket team, for his invaluable contributions. Hafeez's passion for the game has inspired players and his mentorship during the tour of Australia and New Zealand have been of immense importance. The PCB wishes Hafeez good luck and success in his future endeavours.

This is the problem, PCB doesn't allow a good cricketing brain to run for the long term. Hafeez should have served PCB for at least 2 years.

What a circus the PCB is.

Anyone taking up a role at the PCB needs to get his act together i.e. put contract clauses that state advanced money for 1 year needs to reach their bank account before Day 1 ends. This is the level of job security and you need to take the matter in your own hands.

Probably deserves after that howler of opening with Haseebullah and batting Fakhar at 4….plus Sahibzada at 7

Anyone from Misbah’s set should not be trusted in white ball cricket at least

Time for anxiety to creep in again.

Please no coward coach/director who is going to give in to Rizwan’s tantrums

Gosh, it seems like everything is Rizwan’s fault.

Well it is.

He is the biggest problem I have seen emerge in this side. He is the reason why our team is totally unbalanced

How do u know that Hafeez was taking the final call? Why does Shaheen Afridi not getting any blame for using the silly combinations. Surely Shaheen is a experienced enough to stand firm.

Rizwan and Babar are the only the top level players in the team take them out and this team will be struggling to overcome afghanistan ireland or even have a howler against uae

Players were not happy with Hafeez, they complained he used to talk too much, was too opinionated who was not open to suggestions out of his own and bored them to death with long lectures.

A rubbish cricketer like hafeez thinks to highly of himself. It's good that we got rid of him.

This sacking( if it has happened) just goes to show how little they know. I told people on here after watching him with the spinners that it ain't going to work. Making them look like 12year kids to make yourself look better is the dumbest thing you can do.
