Mohammad Hafeez steps down as Director of cricket [Post #225]

In my opinion Hafeez was being a bit harsh on the players.

Treating them like a headmaster will obviously make those guys against you.

I can understand with the players being miffed with Hafeez calling the shots on their NOC's given that he himself made the most of the T-20 route during most of the last ten years of his career.

What am I saying that is factually incorrect?

Why is Fakhar and Saim not opening? Why is Sahibzada Farhan batting at number 7? Why is Fakhar Zaman used at number 4?

Is your team unbalanced or not for the past 4 years because of one man??

What a circus the PCB is.

Anyone taking up a role at the PCB needs to get his act together i.e. put contract clauses that state advanced money for 1 year needs to reach their bank account before Day 1 ends. This is the level of job security and you need to take the matter in your own hands.

Well Hafeez did behave like a clown in the circus.

He accepted the job while Mickey had just been relegated to the academy by Zaka.

He knew what he was getting into but chose to play the game. He must have known that you can't outsmart or outrun the chaos of the PCB.

Funny thing is he will probably be back in some capacity and make the same mistake again. This is Pakistan after all.

However this tenure ends with a rant about paid twitter trends, two series losses, one moral victory in Aus and Hafeez appears to be more like the Nutty Professor than an actual one.

Mohsin Naqvi licking his lips right now.

CM of Punjab

Chairman of PCB

Potentially Team Director of PCT

Players were not happy with Hafeez, they complained he used to talk too much, was too opinionated who was not open to suggestions out of his own and bored them to death with long lectures.

Seems spot on for Hafeez. Former players can never seem to put their ego aside and always think of themselves as the smartest in the room.

It's not easy to completely lose a room and have the players turn against a coach so quick but Hafeez managed to do in a couple of months. Probably a world record.

Just utter chaos with PCB. If it's the chairman changing every few months, its the coaches & selectors. Wild.

This was bound to happen. Hafeez was too direct and was sometimes too much for the board to keep him. After the dismal performance of the team against Australia and New Zealand, this was always on cards.

Hafeez needs to hire someone to write his tweets on him.

Im also happy to see he continues the Pakistani tradition of being ready to expose the system - but not yet. 'Very soon, 'in time' 'stay tuned'. Heard it all before.

Hafeez should have been given 4 years, his genuine in his claim to help the team….

Just because the team are not happy with him, more the reason the keep him as coach, because the players always want an easy life….

Very sad….

Best wishes for the future. Unfortunately, your tenure was cut short. However, we will remember that under your direction, Pakistan put up a real fight against Australia in the Test series.

Looking to spill the beans.

I am happy that all these guys who came running and jumping to oppose Ehsan Mani and Wasim Khan are now getting their comeuppance.

If Hafeez is due severance pay , there will also be a non disparagement clause in his contract. So if he speaks out publicly against the PCB he wont get any money owed

There isn't anyone that will make a difference to the PK team. The reality is that if you put me or anyone else in charge, we will still be inconsistent. We don't need loudmouths, we need intelligent people that can spot talent, utilise that talent and create a system of trust. We have no one that has those talents.

It's the right time for Mo Riz to be declared as the playing Director of Pak cricket. His shenanigans as playing director of PK cricket team will sure be of next level to what he has exhibited as a mere player. What entertainment that will be for world cricket.

Btw what a great loss of entertainment to world cricket. Professor chickend out too soon.

Good riddance. Though I will miss the memes.

And there were many meme worthy moments from this short stint like him missing his flight after reportedly imposing disciplinary fines on players. But I think the top prize goes to him saying 'we played better than Australia' after we lost a test match to them.

Hopefully Hafeez will lash out at the PCB for forcing him to resign and we will get some more meme worthy content out of it.

Inzamam-ul-Haq slams PCB's decision to remove Mohammad Hafeez, he said on a local TV show:

"Can someone explain the reasoning behind removing Muhammad Hafeez as team director but retaining Wahab Riaz as chief selector after the Australian and New Zealand tours?"

"Weren't both appointed at same time and given same responsibilities so why has only Hafeez been held accountable and not Wahab Riaz?"

Wahab has close connections with PML N and Mohsin Naqvi, he was never going to lose his job.

As per reports:
Former Pakistan cricket captain, Mohammad Hafeez, is awaiting payment from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for his stint as the national team’s director and head coach. His tenure, which was supposed to last four years, was cut short after two months due to a shift in PCB’s coaching approach favoring foreign coaches. This change led to Hafeez’s role being questioned and his eventual dismissal.

Despite efforts to discuss the matter, Hafeez has been unable to meet with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi due to Naqvi’s busy schedule. Hafeez is now transitioning to a role as an expert analyst on local TV programs.

Mohammad Hafeez, domestic cricketers await dues from PCB

Signs suggest that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi is hesitant to release payments owed to Mohammad Hafeez for his stint as former team director of the national side, as well as payments due to domestic cricketers who participated in various tournaments last year. This hesitation appears to stem from the fact that all these activities were conducted under the supervision of Mohsin’s predecessor Zaka Ashraf.

Sources disclosed to Dawn that neither Hafeez has received any payments from the PCB for his brief tenure as team director, which began on Nov 16, 2023, and concluded on Feb 16, 2024, nor have the domestic cricketers received their dues.

Hafeez was appointed as team director by the Zaka after Mickey Arthur was removed from the post due to the team’s poor performances in the Asia Cup and the World Cup last year.

Zaka, serving as chairman of the PCB’s interim Management Committee, also recommended Hafeez’s appointment to then caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq for approval as team director for four years. However, Zaka’s recommendation did not receive approval before his resignation from his post.

During Hafeez’s tenure as team director, the Pakistan’s performance on tours to Australia and New Zealand was disappointing. They suffered defeats in all three Test matches against Australia and faced a 4-1 defeat in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand.

Zaka resigned just before the conclusion of the tour of New Zealand due to a lack of full decision-making authority. Unfortunately, Zaka’s departure has left Hafeez awaiting his overdue salaries and other entitlements.

Sources indicate that the paperwork for Hafeez’s payment has been prepared and awaits approval from the relevant authorities. However, there may be a discrepancy between the PCB and Hafeez regarding the duration of payment. Hafeez began his role on Nov 15, 2023, and concluded his last assignment with the New Zealand tour on Jan 21, 2024.

The transition from Zaka’s tenure to Mohsin’s leadership saw Hafeez being informed on Feb. 6 that his services were no longer required. In response, Hafeez expressed his disappointment via a post on X, stating, “I accepted the new role as team director with great enthusiasm to bring about positive reforms. Unfortunately, my designated tenure, offered by the PCB for 4 years, was cut short by 2 months due to the change in chairmanship.”

Furthermore, the PCB has yet to settle the match fees owed to players who participated in the last National T20 Cup, National U-19, and National U-16 cricket tournaments last year.

Interestingly, payments for participants in the Ramadan Cup, held in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad during the holy month of Ramazan, were promptly cleared by the PCB.

This prioritisation of the Ramadan Cup payments over those owed for the aforementioned tournaments has sparked concern among both regional cricket associations and players, according to sources. Additionally, prize money from domestic tournaments held during Zaka’s tenure also remain outstanding.

In a recent interview, Mohammad Hafeez spoke about his tenure as Team Director with Pakistan, He said:

"It is unfortunate that if someone comes to any post they should be given their tenure. When I was called, I clearly told the board that I should be given enough time to deliver because nothing can be done in 2 months and the way I was removed from the post hurt me. I came here for 4 years and planned things accordingly so if you judge me within 2 months, it will not be justified."

"We need to keep cricket away from politics but here in PCB, when any chairman comes they are selected on a political basis. We need to fix this issue first. Whoever comes should not have any political background, and only then can positive changes be made. Otherwise, only faces will keep changing."
