Mohammad Hafeez takes a dig at the potential selection of Sharjeel Khan

mSYKT17.png

Sharjeel probably wants selection more than Hafeez and is working a lot harder than Hafeez is. Hafeez thinks he has a free ticket, when he does get dropped he chucks his way into selection as well.

Hafeez shouldn't be saying anything, it is well known that to get back into Pakistan's test side in 2018 he went back to chucking in first class to get wickets.

Hafeez needs to worry about his own game rather than Sharjeel. This type of infighting doesn't help team's cause.

Is it just me or do others also find it irritating to see the over-confidence shown from certain 'senior' players who themselves have managed to play top level cricket for so long despite having such mediocre records and are well known in cricket cirles for their own limitations and ineffectiveness any half-decent opposition. They have somehow managed to get selected throughout their careers despite strings of failures and incompetency when up against tough opposition or difficult match situations, but then they give statements questioning the credentials or merits of selecting other players and that too using big words such as 'dignity' and 'pride' ?

Spot on. Any other nation and this mediocre chucker ***** would not have lasted 30 games. Never mind a decade of failure in our side.

While I think this is stupid of Hafeez to say about someone who he could be teammates with in the future, people who are calling him a hypocrite for being a chucker are comparing apples to oranges.

There's a huge difference between spot fixing and giving your country a bad name and having an illegal bowling action. Can't compare the two at all.

Fact regarding sharjeel is that he should’ve gotten a lifetime ban. It just goes to show how these guys are taking match fixing lightly. Sharjeel has talent but he let the country down, his tears mine nothing to me. It just goes to show he learned nothing from the spot fixing scandal of 2010. He’ll most likely now get a red carpet treatment into the team and into the WC squad.

PCB should do the same thing as BCCI did with Sreesanth.

Pakistan players know if they fix they can still make a comeback. Australia and England would hand lifetime bans.

India, New Zealand would too (and have done).

And while the others might not do it officially, no one else has let cricketers who fixed play for the nation again, usually they've been ignored for national selection. Pakistan on the other hand while setting the record with 1, looks like might up that to 2.

People don't realise that Pakistani fans happy to let back cricketers who fix, and yet fans of other nations on the other hand would want life bans. Wish we were the same.

When did Salman, Asif and Danish Kaneria make their comebacks?

Sharjeel and Amir have been lucky to have been convicted in a period where Pakistan were so unbelievably talent dry that they haven't moved on. In another period they'd be finished after 5 years out of the game. Amir walked back in as Pakistan were desperate.

There's no complacency from Pakistani cricketers. They could easily struggle to provide for their families over a 5 year ban.

I even said before by allowing Amir back into the team you are setting a very dangerous precedent, sending the message that fixers can be allowed back into the team.

PCB needs to put their foot down and set and example that fixers will not be allowed to represent their country under any circumstance otherwise it will always just be seen as a slap on the wrist.

Those players didn't make a comeback because they were no use to the team.

Trust me if they were good enough to play for Pakistan they would have been selected again.

You say there is no complacency yet Pakistan players continue to fix. They know they will get a light punishment and still get a chance to represent Pakistan in the future.

Firstly, a 5 year ban is nowhere near a light punishment for any professional athlete. For Amir it has drastically slashed his career lifespan and cost him massively in terms what he would have got from earnings/sponsorship. His career has maximum 3-4 years left now.

Pakistani's aren't more prone to fixing just because the punishment isn't harsh enough. They are often poor, uneducated or they have a legitimate fear of refusal.

Imagine you're a cricketer and your family have been threatened by a fixing gang. What are your options here? I bet there's a lot of people here who figure it is safer to bowl a no ball than trust the Pakistani police to protect you.

This is why having a blanket life ban for all fixing crimes is totally disproportionate. We can discuss lifetime bans for cricketers who are repeat offenders, but after 5 years on your first offence the slate should be wiped clean.

Fact is loyalty and morals mean nothing to the PCB. If you can’t be much harsher against spot fixing/fixing then it just goes to show you don’t care.

Sharjeel should get the boot and in regards to amir he’s just a spoiled little brat who showed no class when poking fun after retiring from test cricket. It just goes to show that a person’s character never fades. If you don’t act harsh then accept these disrespectful people to walk all over you.

Hafeez's dignity and pride was on display when Dale Steyn laughed at him mockingly after getting him out for the 10th time. LOL.

There is no definitive proof that Amir or Sharjeel were threatened. Furthermore you don't need education on selling your country for a few thousand pounds is a bad decision.

Hafeez is known as the "Professor", should now be "The Nutty Professor". Dude's lost his marbles in his advancing years.

The first point was meant to simply illustrate why a blanket life ban which you are suggesting is inappropriate.

Your second point is objective. I mean the links between poverty/inequality and criminality are pretty well established, so to say everyone should automatically 'know better' seems narrow minded at best.

Very true.

One deliberately cheats to dismiss batsmen he is not skilful enough to remove legitimately. His offences damage other people’s careers, both batsmen and superior bowlers. He is cricket’s equivalent of a steroid abuser like Lance Armstrong

Whereas a spotfixer - and there is no proof that Sharjeel was one - actually does not harm the career or performances of others in any way.

A spotfixer is a crook but commits a victimless crime.

A chucker is a cheat who damages other players’ careers and changes the outcome of matches.

Misbah calls for uniform policy in dealing with corrupt cricketers

Pakistan head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq on Tuesday demanded a clear policy for players who are found guilty of corruption at any level.

However, the former Test captain also didn’t agree with the public comments made by Mohammad Hafeez, who feels tainted players should not be allowed back into the national team.

“It is my personal opinion that if you are playing as a player you shouldn’t be giving such opinion as the ICC and PCB are the authority on these matters and they take decisions as per existing law,” he said in a video interaction with the print media.

He advised Hafeez to avoid making comments because as a player one has to share the dressing room.

“It is good that the PCB CEO Wasim Khan has had a long talk with Hafeez on this issue and Hafeez has shared his ideas as well. I think he will now understand that it is totally up to the organisation to take a decision on these issues.”

Asked about Hafeez’s suggestion that a clause should be put into the players contracts on the issue of what should happen if a player is found guilty of corruption, Misbah said that there should be a unanimous law for all players.

“But we have to take into count many things like a player’s education and his understanding of his position and situation and his decision making ability. In most cases we have seen it has been about players failing to report any approaches to them.”

Misbah said players like in the recent Umar Akmal case tended to take things lightly and landed into trouble.

“My personal view is that if you want to put such a clause for players, it should be unanimous and should be decided once for all.”

Misbah also indicated that Hafeez might not be in the team management’s future plans in the ODI format.

“When we sit down to talk about ODI cricket we will have to see whether Hafeez would be playing in the 2023 World Cup because you have to start planning about a World Cup well in time.”

What Hafeez has suggested is absolutely correct, any centrally contracted player who commits corruption loses the right to represent Pakistan ever again. That clause should be put in the central contracts

Absolutely agree. But we won't do this just in case a super talented guy gets banned and we want to bring him back.

I do wonder if the trio didn't include Amir all those years back and instead was some out of favour cricketer. Then maybe we would have taken stricter action, I'm sure fans would have been happy with life bans from international cricket, and maybe we wouldn't have had yet more cricketers fall to fixing (or at least not at the rate which we currently are getting).

Inserting this clause in the central contract might act a deterrent for future players, i don't think this clause is in the central contracts yet

At least Malik has the decency to milk his situation quietly in the background unlike this jobber who likes to get on his moral high horse and start babbling on.

Although i don't necessarily disagree with what Hafeez has said, the only thing that annoys me is the hypocrisy. If you feel this strong about Sharjeel then why didn't you refuse to play when Amir was in the team?

Afridi on the other hand "retired" from Pakistan during his spat with Waqar Younis and Ijaz Butt. Afridi actually showed it was a matter of principal to him.

The fact is that Pakistan cricket doesn't take any proper disciplinary action against players.

2 points:

1. Yes the likes of Salman, Asif and Kaneria got more or less lifetime bans. PCB cherry picks who they'll hand a lifetime ban to and who they will go lenient on.
2. If these guys struggle financially then let them struggle. If you do something illegal at work or make a mistake you get the sack and this is how spot fixing should be handled.

Sreesanth was young as well when he got done. Did India bring him back? No.

I agree and have endorsed rules and laws to me amended in a way to incorporate that.

For the case of Sharjeel he was given a ban of 2.5 years which he served and in my opinion now should be considered on merit just like others as I dont agree with synthetic life ban.

If you want to give someone a life ban then put it officially as it is and as you mentioned constitution, law, contracts etc should incorporate life bans if that is the intention.

Young? In cricket 31 isnt considered young as you are already into your career as a cricketer for well over a decade. 18 vs 31 is not a comparison.

India has been better in safeguarding some of their cricketers, two IPL teams were banned and in one of the match total put on the board and chased was pre decided. So arguments which many give that players weren’t involved just dont want to believe what happened.

There was a report by Indian judge Mudgal as well where he indicated atleast 6 players who have played for India were involved. Thing is BCCI and ICC can afford to taint the reputation of the cricket in India which produces huge chunk of the revenue.

Adamant to the end - Hafeez speaking at his retirement presser:

"I was and I am still against fixers. I never wanted fixers to be given a second chance. I was told by the then PCB chairman to mind my own business and that those fixers would be given a second chance no matter what. I was devastated to hear that"

Indeed. He was never comfortable playing alongside the guys who were found guilty of any sort of corruption.

Can we have a seperate thread on this.

It will be a discussion and clear up the fans that argue oh hafeez played witht he fixers later on.

Hafeez made a very strong statement and i agree with it. Fixers shouldnt be allowed back.

Its funny how hafeezs career was threaten by the pcb but not the fixers

Is Hafeez best mates with Misbah ?

In retrospect, I think he was doing the right thing making a point on match fixing. It is important to set standards.
