Pakistan squad for Australia ODIs announced

• Shoaib Malik named captain as Sarfaraz Ahmed is among six players rested, Hafeez recovering from thumb surgery, Hussain Talat dropped

• Haris Sohail, Junaid Khan, Umar Akmal and Yasir Shah recalled

• Uncapped Abid Ali, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Hasnain and Saad Ali included

• Matches to be played on 22, 24, 27, 29 and 31 March in Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Dubai

Karachi, 8 March 2019:

The Pakistan cricket selectors have named a 16-member squad for the five-match ODI series against world champions Australia. The series will start in Sharjah on 22 March and culminate in Dubai on 31 March.

The selectors have rested six players from the squad that lost 2-3 to South Africa earlier this year. They are: Captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Ali, Shadab Khan and Shaheen Shah Afridi, while Hussain Talat has been dropped and Mohammad Hafeez was not considered as he is recovering from a thumb surgery.

Shoaib Malik has been appointed the captain in Sarfaraz’s absence. The 37-year-old has played 279 ODIs, including 38 as captain, winning 25 and losing 13. Shoaib has scored 7,379 runs with nine centuries and taken 156 wickets.

The eight players have been replaced by cricketers who have either demonstrated in the domestic circuit that they have the ability and are ready to compete at the top level or have reclaimed fitness or form. These include Abid Ali, Haris Sohail, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Hasnain, Saad Ali, Umar Akmal and Yasir Shah.

Of these eight players, there are four uncapped players in Abid Ali, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Hasnain and Saad Ali.

The squad includes three openers (Abid Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Shan Masood), four middle-order batsmen (Haris Sohail, Saad Ali, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal), wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan, wrist spinner Yasir Shah, two all-rounders (Faheem Ashraf and Imad Wasim) and five fast bowlers (Junaid Khan, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Hasnain and Usman Shinwari).

Pakistan chairman of selectors Inzamam-ul-Haq: “I am pleased that we have been able to develop a strong bench-strength that has helped us to make eight changes from the previous series. This is a good sign for Pakistan cricket as we now have a big pool of players who have the capability, talent and potential, and are raring to step up and seize the opportunity when thrown at the deep end.

“The changes have been made taking into consideration the player workload in the build up to the World Cup, which starts 30 May. Apart from five ODIs against Australia, we have three warm-up games followed by five ODIs against England, and then two World Cup warm-up matches followed by, at least, nine games, which Inshallah will become 11 matches.

“This is too much cricket in a short period of time. Had there been no pre-World Cup matches in England, then we would not have made these many changes.

“While Haris Sohail, Junaid Khan, Umar Akmal and Yasir Shah are returning to ODI cricket, Abid Ali, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Hasnain and Saad Ali have been rewarded for stellar performances in domestic cricket.

“The series against the world champions will not be an easy one and these players, in fact, will be tested to their limits. This will provide these players a great opportunity to display their skills and temperament, strengthening their claims for a World Cup call-up as there are a few places up for grabs.

“Abid Ali has been knocking on the doors of international cricket. But because we had opted for tried and tested players in the past few series, he was unable to break into the side. He has now got an opportunity and I am hoping he will deliver the goods.

“Mohammad Abbas, we think, will be a handy and wicket-taking bowler in English conditions as he has regularly made the new ball do the talking. We were unable to try him in South Africa due to his shoulder injury, so this is his chance to show that he can be as effective and lethal with the new ball in ODI cricket as he is in the longer format.

“Mohammad Hasnain has been identified as one of the fast bowlers for the future. The 18-year-old has not only bowled with pace, regularly clocking 145kmp/h, he has shown tremendous control with the ball which has earned him crucial wickets in the ongoing HBL PSL. Like we nurtured and trained Shaheen Shah Afridi and so many other great fast bowlers of yester years, we, with the support of the team management, have decided to provide the same pathway to the Hyderabad-born lad.

“Umar Akmal, we all know, is immensely talented and still has plenty to offer. Sometimes, time away from international cricket allows a player to recompose and gather himself, and come back strongly. I hope this happens with this player, as a fully fit and in-form Umar will bolster the middle-order.

“Saad Ali has not only been a consistent scorer in domestic cricket, including 50-over cricket, but also had good series against England and New Zealand A sides.

“Haris Sohail and Junaid Khan have been drafted in the side after they have regained complete match fitness, while Yasir Shah has been included in the side keeping in mind that we may opt to select two wrist spinners in the World Cup squad.”

The Pakistan cricket team will depart for the UAE on 18 March.

Yasir makes no sense whatsoever with other spinners comfortably outperforming him in the PSL. Not sure how I feel about Umar Akmal, somehow manages to always be there in the Australia series.
Glad to see Hasnain brought into the international fold

Not bad

But unfortuntely more deserving players miss out.

Zafar Gohar is a lot better than Yasir Shah (see PSL for proof)

Amir Yamin has been in better form than Faheem Ashraf

Investing in Rizwan is a waste of time.

Not too unhappy with this squad. The only concern is the choice of captain. Would have been better to give it to shaan or imam.

Amir should be given all 5 matches and that should decide his future. According to some news channel he was added on the request of Mickey to give him last chance. Playing on the trot five matches will give an account of his fitness for worldcup as well as performance. As serious bowling fitness would be needed in worldcup to play continuous 10 matches plus 5 vs England as well as 2 warmup matches

Shinwari should have been dropped for either Rauf or Musa but glad to see Hasnain make the squad even though he is the inferior of this trio of young quicks.

Zafar Gohar should have come in for Yasir Shah.

The headline of this squad is the recall of Umar Akmal which great news and richly deserved.

Ok, BUT could have been so much better.

No Saud Shakeel, Asif Ali, Aamer Yamin or Talat.

Pity a proper spinner like Zafar wasn’t selected.

Lol at Junaid and Abbas. Rauf and/or Musa should have been picked instead.

Also in light of this squad can people now stop peddling the myth that PSL is the only way players are selected?!

Happy to see guys like saad Ali and abid Ali givin a chance but why is shinwari still selected that's criminal lol

My squad would be
Shoaib Malik (captain)
2. Abid Ali
3. Aamir Yamin
4. Haris Sohail
5. Imad Wasim
6. Imam-ul-Haq
7. Junaid Khan
8. Sohail Akhtar
9. Mohammad Amir
10. Mohammad Hasnain
11. Umer Siddiq (wicketkeeper)
12. Saad Ali
13. Shan Masood
14. Umar Akmal
15. Haris Rauf
16. Umer Khan

Zafar Gohar is far better than yasir in limited overs.
I think this series will decide between shinwar and junaid for wc squad.

Faheem Ashraf should fight for bowling spot and should be classified as bowler. Futhermore there are better bowlers than him. Looks like Saad Ali gonna play worldcup if he performs here and than vs eng and hafeez remain injured

Saud Shakil in place of Imam ul haq could be a good decision.
Bcoz imam already cemented his place for wc.

Biggest weakness of this squad other than an akmal back in the squad is the captain..

Ugh some good selections but some really annoying ones too.

How long will it take them to realise Yasir is not an LOI bowler, and the fact that the World Cup is in England only makes this selection even more baffling.

Inzi select test squad for ODI. Should have selected Azhar and Shafiq as well. Deserve to be 5-0. This guy is so unfit for the job. Apart from Hasnain it was preselected squad.

Abbas, Yasir, old Abid Ali doesn't have any future. Umar Akmal as usual fail under pressure.

I have a feeling that ppl deliberately released the story of Haris Rauf not wanting to play first class cricket just for preventing his selection in Pakistan team.

Some good selections but disappointed to see Rizwan, Shinwari getting selected.

No saud again. Trash selections with yasir, shinwari , rizwan. Pathetic by inzi as well as Mickey.

Awful pace bowling department, barring Hasnain.

Shinwari and Amir again?

Also Yasir Shah? :))

For those interested, this is effectively what they have done:

Sarfaraz Ahmed- Abbas
Babar Azam- Saad Ali
Fakhar Zaman- Abid Ali
Hasan Ali- Junaid Khan
Shadab Khan- Yasir
SSA- Hasnain
Hussain Talat- Umar Akmal
Hafeez- Haris

Bizarrely, management seem to think there are more questions about the pace attack than the batting .

Great to see Hasnain selected! This is the power of the PSL... It is allowing us to aim the spotlight on young talents that need to be supported. The quicker that the useless sifarish players that are booted out, the faster we will prosper!

Should have selected Rauf too.

What has Yasir done to be selected ahead of Zafar Gohar or Umer Khan ?

This is gonna be the WC squad now confirmed (barring injury):

1) Fakhar Zaman
2) Imam ul Haq
3) Babar Azam
4) Mohammad Hafeez
5) Shoaib Malik
6) Sarfraz Ahmed (c) (wk)
7) Imad Wasim
8) Shadab Khan
9) Hasan Ali
10) Mohammad Amir
11) Shaheen Shah Afridi

12) Fahim
13 & 14) 2 batsmen out of Shan / Haris / Umar Akmal
15) 1 bowler out of Hasnain / Abbas / Shinwari / Junaid

I don't see Saad & Abid getting any games, they're only in the squad if someone has a shocker or to cover for any injury

So after playing our full team and collecting cheap T20I wins for two years, we have decided to rest our players in an ODI series two months before the World Cup.

PCB's brilliant planning at its brilliant best.

Decent squad and taken the right approach by resting dead certain choices for the World Cup.

Everyone else are not certain and there will be spots up for grabs.

Yasir and Shinwari are the only question marks on this squad. Would have liked to see if Rauf and another spinner that could bat play (not sure of Z Gohar fits the bill as hes not that good a bat)

Abbas seems to be a interesting choice and will allow Mickey a chance to see how he can fit into the ODI game (ie play all his overs in the first 10 like Asif used to do). Can he bowl at the death (yorkers, slow balls, mix-ups)?

Yasir’s selection other than him being a leggy is a big question mark.

Its not necessary to have all kinds of spinners for the sake of it. Zafar Gohar and even Umer Khan looked better LOI spinner than Yasir. I would have even taken Nawaz over him for his all round ability.

Anyways I hope Yasir proves me wrong for the sake of Pak.

My XI for 1st match:
1. Shan Masood, 2. Saad Ali, 3. Haris Sohail, 4. Shoaib Malik*, 5. Umar Akmal, 6. Imad Wasim, 7. Mohammad Rizwan+, 8. Yasir Shah 9. Mohammad Amir, 10. Junaid Khan, 11. Mohammad Abbas

Saad Ali can open in ODIs. Yasir has not been great in ODIs, but he should be given another chance. Amir and Junaid need to get in rhythm. Shan and Abbas could debut. Faheem and Imam can rest.

This is a decent squad.
Pakistan actually have 8-9 matches in England before their First world cup match to get acclimatised and adjust to the playing conditions so its a good idea by the PCB for fringe players to get time in the middle either bowling or batting to stake their claim.

I have an issue with the captain as Malik's ODI form has tailed off and he only averages like 12 in England after playing over 25 matches, so in my mind he should not even be in the squad. However if Hafeez is still injured they are going to want at least one "senior " player.

Harris sohail has a chance to prove his fitness in the longer format, and if he provides both then he should be in the starting 11 for the WC ahead of both Malik and Hafeez.

Umar Akmal has a golden chance to show that he is reinvented. He will most likely bat at 4 or 5 given the nature of this squad. He needs to play a few good innings and not just cameos to show he can be trusted in the middle order.

Shan Masood deservesa a chance as an opener.

Junaid khan if fit should be on the plane, and this is his chance to prove this. He is extremely under rated.

The likes of Rauf and Hasnain need more time to develop . They have barely played any LIST A games.

Both Abbas and Yasir are not ODI material , Abid Ali is 32 years old, Rizwan has lack of batting skill and Shinwari is a poor bowler. No proper planning what so ever. Both Inzi and yes man/drama queen Micky have to go after 2019 World Cup.

Abbas can bowl pretty decent yorkers, have seen him bowling those in domestics. Guy has a thinking brain as well. Only question mark is if he can field well, considering its really important in LOIs.

Abbas is a good selection, will be very handy in those English conditions.

I hope Rauf gets developed and is not forgotten in the system. He surely did really well in PSL and outperformed many who are selected however, i can understand from management’s point of view who dont want to take couple of Raw pacers to the WC.

Hassan and Shaheen are booked while Aus series will be a battle royale between Amir, Junaid, Abbas, Shinwari and Hasnain.

After this series
Rizwan out Sarfraz IN
Abid or shan out Fakhar In
Yasir out shady IN
Saad out hafeez in
Harris out Babar in
Shinwari out Shaheen IN
Abbas out Hassan IN

This will be the lineup for the first match:

Imam Ul Haq
Shan Masood
Haris Sohail
Umar Akmal
Shoaib Malik(C)
Mohammad Rizwan(Wk)
Imad Wasim
Faheem Ashraf
Mohammad Amir
Yasir Shah
Junaid Khan

Bench:

Abid Ali
Saad Ali
Usman Shinwari
Mohammad Hasnain
Mohammad Abbas

After this series
Rizwan out Sarfraz IN
Abid or shan out Fakhar In
Yasir out shady IN
Saad out hafeez in
Harris out Babar in
Shinwari out Shaheen IN
Abbas out Hassan IN

Hafeez isn't likely to be fit before WC

After this series
Rizwan out Sarfraz IN
Abid or shan out Fakhar In
Yasir out shady IN
Saad out hafeez in
Harris out Babar in
Shinwari out Shaheen IN
Abbas out Hassan IN

This is a 16 Men Squad, hence one player should be dropped without a replacement and that would be a pacer, most likely one of Junaid/Hasnain.

Also, Haris Sohail should definitely be in our World Cup Squad as he is our 2nd best batsman after Babar Azam. Shan Masood should make way, if Umar Akmal performs well against Australia.

Inzi “while Yasir Shah has been included in the side keeping in mind that we may opt to select two wrist spinners in the World Cup squad.”

Two leg spinners? Where was this theory when a youngster like Shadab was struggling in SA’s later half of the LOIs but had to keep playing because there was no other spinner in the squad.

With a 15 man WC squad this wont be possible unless they are thinking of going with 3 specialist pacers and Faheem or dropping Faheem or going with just 7 batsmen including keeper.

Maybe, they are thinking of dropping Imad Wasim if he fails against Australia.

I am worried about our all-rounders strength for the world cup, we have only one all-rounder who is ready and can bat i.e Imad Wasim. While I consider Faheem and Shadab as average bowlers with poor batting skills. We should have given opportunity to Aamir Yamin who is a batting all-rounder and can give us 6-7 overs in a match.

Maybe, they are thinking of dropping Imad Wasim if he fails against Australia.

I hope not. Imad is the best all rounder we have, who is more dependable with the bat than Faheem and Shadab as he recently showed in SA series.

I wish Hasnain all the best for his debut. He looks very promising with bowling style similar to Sami. Very happy to see right arm genuine fast bowler from Pakistan after a long time.
Pakistan bowling lineup for World Cup->Amir, Judaid, Hasan, Hasnain, Shadab.
Wow!!

Only selections I don't like are Yasir, and to a lesser extent Abbas and Faheem

Otherwise a lot to like about this squad. Excited to see Saad Ali, Shan, and most of all Husnain

Lol.
This is the definition of a TRUE B TEAM.
Not india's team when kohli and bumrah aren't playing.
If Aus lose this then it'll be MIGHTY embarrassing for them.

So you are not taking Shaheen Shah to WC?

Pretty much. I'm shocked that these players were not told to sit out for the PSL.

Rizwan is awful.

Most likely playing 11

Imam
Shan Masood
Harris Sohail
Umar Akmal/Saad Ali
Shoaib Malik
Muhammad Rizwan
Imad Wasim
Faheem
Yasir Shah
Muhammad Abbass
Junaid Khan

Pretty much. I'm shocked that these players were not told to sit out for the PSL.

The PSL doesn't matter. There are a lot of ODI games coming up and the players need rest. Also, this is an opportunity to test the bench and fill out the squad, something you can only do by giving your fringe players a chance.

I don't think Yasir Shah should have been selected and Amir probably deserved a rest as well, but apart from that, this is a great squad and should tell us a lot about who will and who won't make the World Cup squad.

Hoping to see some big performances from Haris Sohail, Umar Akmal, Junaid Khan and Imad Wasim, in particular.

A bloodless coup by the chief selector, the gloves have come off.

Knew a weak Mickey Arthur will help Inzamam screw a bit of meritocracy that was left in the team. Nod disciplinary and erratic players who brought us down to 9 in ODI till 2016 have been picked up again. How many batting talents we lost due to political backings of these players, a long-term damage was done now seen in the domestics as well.

Wrong players for the wrong format, Abid Ali and Saad. Again picked as reserves for Imam ul Haq and Umar Akmal means no chance for them will only earn allowance to warm the benches.
Hussain Talat is dropped whereas Rizwan is kept. Players with average in 20s against top 5 like Shan Masood and Imam picked.

Its 3 years now, under Inzamam Pak batting has been decimated. His nephew and neighbours in LAhore filling the positions as its a family team.

PCB shamelessly allowing this, Ehsan Mani congrats. We PAkistani cricket fans now ned to forget we will see Pakistani batting talents in the near future until Inzamam is kept on this position.

Zafar gohar actually spins the ball and is not some sort of darter like imad, nawaz or yasir.Zafar should have been given a go.It was an ideal time to rest faheem ashraf and Aamir yamin should have been given a go,although not as quick as faheem but it would have suited the purpose for giving faheem a rest.Less said about rizwan is better.Umar siddique should have been given a go but otherwise decent selections and an perfect opportunity for guys like umar akmal, junaid and shinwari to prove their mettle and make the trip for the world cup,Plus its an good step by the pcb to rest the main players before the world cup so they can start the world cup with fresh minds and bodies.

So after playing our full team and collecting cheap T20I wins for two years, we have decided to rest our players in an ODI series two months before the World Cup.

PCB's brilliant planning at its brilliant best.

Honestly i thinks its a good step by the pcb to rest the players as we will have 5 odis and warm up games before the world cup,So we will get ample practice.Cant risk players to be injured by playing useless cricket in worn out dead u.a.e pitches.

How much more rest does amir needs??He was rested for newzealand series and also sat out in some south africa one dayers and t20s.There is no excuse for amir this time.

He's not suited for bowling in the UAE and will probably play all 14 ODIs once we get to England. That is a lot of work for a bowler who gets tired and bored easily.

I just don't get it. This is **,

Pacers should have gone with Haris, Husnain, Abbas, Junaid, Wahab to fight for 2 spots for WC along Shaheen, Hassan, Faheem. Amir and Usman need to be dropped.

Imad is nothing with the bat nor ball for ODI, u need to take wickets in ODI, Zafar Gohar is a better choice.

Middle order they should have opted for Asif Ali and Umar Akmal to fight for 2/3 late middle order spots with Malik.

Ideally the world cup 11 should be

Fakhar
Imam
Babar
Haris Sohail
Sarfraz WK C
Umar Akmal
Shadab
Faheem
Hassan
Shaheen
Hasnain

Shadab, Faheem and Hassan need to take their batting serious and need to be reliable options late down the order.

You can get 8 overs from Hasnain of genuine pace
Hassan, Shaheen and shadab can give 10 overs a piece
Faheem can bowl 8
Haris Sohail can fill in 4 overs in the middle

and we got Junior back in the side one step ahead and five steps back.

He is mentally unstable to play the highest level of cricket I don't understand when selectors will realize this.

Shoaib Malik (c), Abid Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Haris Sohail, Imad Wasim, Imam-ul-Haq, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Saad Ali, Shan Masood, Umar Akmal, Usman Shinwari, Yasir Shah

1.Shan Masood
2.Imam Ul Haq
3.Haris Sohail
4.Umar Akmal
5.Shoaib Malik
6.Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
7.Imad Wasim
8.Faheem Ashraf
9.Mohammad Hasnain
10.Junaid Khan
11.Yasir Shah :))

Very weak excuse.
These are professionals they are not glass made decoration pieces. They can get injured in a warm up also. Shoaib Malik is being given another chance to replace Sarfraz Ahmed in a post-WC senario. Inzi is trying to plan it beforehand. The champions trophy showed the drop-in type of pitches in UK are'nt that lively as they were traditionally.

He's not suited for bowling in the UAE and will probably play all 14 ODIs once we get to England. That is a lot of work for a bowler who gets tired and bored easily.

Problem is Amir hasnt been in form especially in ODIs for over a year. So the question was whether to play him so he can get back in form or to rest him and then take him to world cup with his current form which to be honest hasnt been good enough recently to warrant him a place in national team.

On merit alone he didnt deserve and inclusion in the series let alone the WC but we all know his potential when he is on song. This series is another effort from the management to get Amir in form.

I like the decision and hopefully he can get his form back in these 5 ODIs. Get that early swing with the new ball and increase bit pace as well which will happen eventually once he finds his rythm.

and we got Junior back in the side one step ahead and five steps back.

He is mentally unstable to play the highest level of cricket I don't understand when selectors will realize this.

Cant blame the, not a lot of upcoming batsmen who have all the gears.

I wish Hasnain all the best for his debut. He looks very promising with bowling style similar to Sami. Very happy to see right arm genuine fast bowler from Pakistan after a long time.

Wow!!

Just pray that he doesn't end up like Sami.

Abbas inclusion in the squad in UAE probably hints that he will be there with team in England & i think if he performs well he can take place of Amir who will be useless for almost 75% of the tournament.
