Popularity can be measured by viewers , number of fans for any given sport.

1. Football
2.Cricket
3.Field Hockey
4.Tennis

Entertaining is a personal opinion. Which are your most entertaing sports and why?

For me it's...

1. Football - The game lasts only 90 mins, it's end to end, contact sport and involves a lot of tactics.

2. Cricket - Can go on for 5 days and be boring at times but I find it entertaining. Love seeing stumps demolshed, balls hit for six or even a forward defence or a leave to a swinging ball.

3. Boxing - No other one on one sport comes close imo. Boxing can last 12 rounds where a fighter will be tested in every way, his courage, speed of movement, strength, stamina, brain etc.

I will watch any sport but find it difficult to watch Americans sports such as American football, Baseball, Ice Hockey. Even watching darts is more entertaining these imo. I'm not trying to ridicule American sports but since there are many fans of these sports, its a healthy debate. :sarf2

Cricket, NFL and football.

I put cricket at top because I have an attachment to it. But shear bravery and complexity.... it is NFL.

Accorrding to this post on the web.

"An average professional football game lasts 3 hours and 12 minutes, but if you tally up the time when the ball is actually in play, the action amounts to a mere 11 minutes."

Sure there are complex tactics involved but too many stoppages. I would imagine a lot of these are for advertisement?

I enjoy watching Basketball too but the time outs are annoying. Often I see less than 10 seconds remaining but a team calls a time out and you have to wait another 5 mins to see the end of the game! Ridiculous tbh.

Tactics: NFL

Skill and finesse + entertainment: Soccer/football

Speed, strength and endurance: Ice hockey

Cricket ranks pretty low on all of those metrics, except probably endurance and that too only for test matches that go the distance. I just happen to love the game because that was the only one that Pakistan really played and the one that I was most exposed to growing up. I'm sure if I grew up in a western country my interest in cricket would be quite casual.

I see the NFL a bit like Japanese/Chinese cooking... all the time is in prep, the actual cooking time itself is usually few minutes. I think you just get used to the stoppages and become oblivious to it. Infact the stoppages are necessary, otherwise the injuries would mount to unsustainable levels.

One thing I find hilarious is though when they proclaim themselves to be world champions in a sport played only by them.

It's interesting the British exported so many sports worldwide, cricket and football being two biggest exports. Sure some of these were played previously in history in some type of form but Britain set them up in a more official regulated way.

Cricket

Football is only entertaining during the World Cups.

Due to this, the sport hasn't become popular all over the world, at least not as much as many other sports. I think Americans enjoy being the best at many things and they are the best at this sport along with Baseball but as you say they are American sports and not really world sports.

When kids play growing up outside, do they use a different method of playing such as tag to tackle as I would imagine the equipment isn't cheap?

Ice hockey (NHL) is fantastic.

Great parity between teams, contact sport, and has the added skill of skating on ice. It takes a very good athlete to master it at the pro level.

Football (both of them) and basketball are fun while cricket is definitely an acquired taste.

I find baseball and golf to be tedious. Very hard to watch on TV.

I imagine it's not popular because it's dangerous and and it's not cheap. Also, I think it's one of those games where the top level resembles very little to the kids playing in the park. I like NFL, the razzmatazz, they way they designed the league and rules to keep it competitive.

Where football beats every other sport... all you need is a roundish ball and jumpers or stones for goal posts and you can have a very enjoyable game for next to nothing. Everyone can join in.

We play two-hand touch. Except I tend to do a lot of grabbing and shoving while on defense. :floyd

Yes saw them do it yesterday, even Brady was if you wanna be "world champ" like lol.

I just started watching this season NFL,supporting Bears but lol ,and its defn very entertaining ,stoppages are amazing.

Cricket overall for me coz of attachment.

Nobody in the world would be able to beat them so they are.

Ice hockey, played it as a kid. Real fun, it'd be dope if Pakistan formed an ice hockey team, we could def win bronze medal. In extreme sports I'd say skating (as in skate boarding) and surfing are the most exciting. Parkour is also a lot of fun albeit kinda stupid.

NFL is probably the most tactical sport there is
people who slag it just come off it as ignorant

my favorite sports are cricket and football (european)

1.Boxing

2. Cricket

3. MMA

Would put WWE at no.2 as well although it's sports entertainment. Would include footy but it's dependent on how Villa are doing :yk

Basketball is very popular in Pakistan going by my time spent there a while back, well playing it anyway

Ice Hockey seems fun but being a Brit hard to get into it

its very simple thats why i guess

pakistanis arent built for ball lol

When I played in Pakistan, everybody there played with heart and hustle to make up for their physical deficiencies.

And btw Basketball is not all athleticism. Spanish, Chinese and Brazilian are all fairly unfit by US standards but they are top world teams.

Only thing I find bearable to watch these days is Dota 2 which is more of an esport than a sport (think chess on steroids played on computers).

I guess you are talking about SAF Games then. It's a bit tough to swallow that PAK can win a Bronze beating one of USA, Canada & Russia. Here I am not even considering Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Czech/Slovak Republics, Former 4 Baltic SSRs (Estonia, Latvia, ..), Germany, Switzerland and former Yugoslav states .....

I have an honest question - have you ever seen Ice Hockey? Do you know at what level a country can win bronze in a sports dominated by 1st world countries and that sports needs millions/billions in investment to reach highest level? After half a century of investment and focus - only recently China, Japan & South Korea has broken into top 35 ranking ..... and still they don't make WC Championship division, because of the former USSR states in Asia - Kazakhstan.

Apart from other technical issues, that game needs extreme maneuverity on skates - something that has to come natural for kids days - just like a duckling doesn't need to be taught swimming, kids born outside 45 degree latitude learn to skate on ice just like other kids learn to walk. Do you think just by training few skaters in Karakorum range would take a country to top level of a global sports, which sporting countries like China, Japan, Korea, AUS, NZ, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina or Ukraine is failing for decades?

I hope, you are not considering that field hockey skills can be transferred on ice .....

My order is probably (for spectator games, athletics, swimming, gymnastics are medal sports)

Soccer 100 (not even close to anyone - I actually will watch a Liverpool game, instead of a BD-IND/PAK ODI/Test)
Cricket 10 (Only reason that there was a childhood first crash and BD is remotely decent - among top 10 in world :)
Tennis 9 (This'll go down after Roger retires - it was among top, when Steffi was active)
Volleyball (conventional) 8
Basketball 7 (It'll go higher if we can bring one power forward like Anthony Davis or Durant at Raptors)
Snooker (All cue ball games combined led by Snooker) 6 (I only watch Ronnie, and sometimes Selby, Trump, Higgins & Robertson)
Golf (Only Majors) 5
Badminton 4
Baseball 3 (Because I am in Canada now)
Field Hockey 2
F1 1 (It was much higher between 1998 to 2006, guess why?)

Table Tennis, Chess & Contract bride I play lot, but hardly watch.

Surprised no one mentioned kabaddi. The sport which displays desi crab mentality to the fullest.

I'm exactly the same, nothing comes first if Liverpool are playing unless it's Pakistan in a crucial tournament game. It's not easy to be a fan of Liv and Pak as both are similar in terms of being unpredictable. The atmosphere the fans create is also very passionate, being at Anfield or being at a packed stadium of Pak fans is a great feeling although LFC fans are a bit more classy.

Btw you must spend an awful lot of time reading and watching sports as your knowledge is incredible.

It's one sport I enjoying watch sometimes but used to hate playing at school. It was always cold, muddy, windy and raining. On top of this, you would get thrown about and jumped on and unlike the sissys of American football there is no protective gear! Welcome btw.

I have spent a good part of my life away from friends & family - hence, I don't have many friends apart from few close one and I make hardly any money for Zukerberg ... sports, music & movies had been my biggest pass time. Also, when I was in Dhaka, average time in my car was about 3.5 hours/day ....... lots of time to read.

Cricket... hate everything else.

I don’t see the entertainment in football etc at all. I’d rather watch Azhar Ali and Misbah-ul-Haq block out for 5 days straight.

I love rugby, cricket and football. Each has its moments but cricket and rugby are only entertaining at the highest levels whereas Football with a much bigger talent base because of the shear numbers that play it, is much more entertaining throughout the tiers. Ìf it came to it, i would chose an Ind-PK game, followed by AllBlack v Boks rugby, followed by Brazil v Germany at football or Man U v Liverpool.

I only watch Cricket and Tennis. 14 years in the US and none of the american sports interested me. I hated baseball especially. For me it has to be Cricket followed by Tennis.

NFL players are bigger, stronger, and faster. The hits are more dangerous which is why protective gear is needed.

Well you can thank colonization and British history of plunder and imperialism for that

on top of that its not like stoppages are not crucial to the game play.

the tactics are being set up with players taking their positions for plays they worked on. its not like a stoppage means there is literally no action.

obv a play wouldnt go over half a minute at the best of times but the 3-4 minutes to prepare for that one play is crucial and would be counted as part of the 'play' by most fans. Only someone not acquanited with the sport would count it as a stoppage in the normal sense of the word.

An example people might understand here is after a delivery when the fielders take their positions and then the captain and bowlers discuss the field settings and strategy. Often this process takes longer than the actual motion of delivering the ball. But it would be ridiculous to not count it as part of a 'play.'

Lol im sure in a test match if you take out breaks and times spent on tactics, field settings etc the actual cricket action would be a smaller percentage.

Same case in NFL but more

3) Tennis
4) basketball
5) badminton
6) kabaddi (i guess it's in India only)

Every other sport comes next.

I think, most posters here in PP hardly bothered to watch an NFL game or tried to understand the game. It’s extremely absorbing if one understands the tactics & scoring system of it. It’s one game where the highest amount of turnover can be done in shortest time. Last (2017) Super Bowl NE Patriots covered 19 points in last Q to force an OT and then win it by 6 against Falcons.

The stops are actually part of the game - those who understand the game actually can imagine possible options the attacking coach can adopt & how defence can counter. Besides like Rugby, there are multiple ways of scoring. For common eye, every start after a stop looks same, but it’s actually not the case. It’s like a war - two belligerents prepare for weeks but actual battle takes place may be for few days, or hours.

Most people watch NFL (any sports) often with mute on - which won’t help😜. NBC commies are some of the best to explain a game and listening them carefully can explain the tactics (they call play). I hardly watch NFL just because I don’t like such violence in a game - same reason for Rugby, which is another absorving game if one understands the basic tactics & scoring system (and any contact sports). Another reason is that I have no team in NFL - without supporting any team, it’s dificult to enjoy any game or competition.

In order of rank:

1. Football
2. Boxing
3. MMA
4. Cricket

Cricket has gone down the ladder consistently as I have accepted my native British roots.

1) Football
2) Cricket
3) Tennis

Personally I find squash as one of the best sports to participate in but its not a good spectator sport.

There is no need to get emotional everytime anything American is 'crictised', you are not Trump. :kp

What makes you say this?

Rugby players DO NOT wear protective gear so therefore feel more pain, this is a no brainer.

Rugby players also do not play for a few seconds and then take a break ,the game has no breaks until half time. Therfore they have more stamina and endurance.

American ball players are larger sure but doesn't mean they are superiour any in other way. I've seen Rugby players with broken noses, head bleeds, awful injuries but they continue to play the game.

I was speaking to a friend who is 6ft 5 and weighs over 110kg, he plays both and I would be confident in assuming he knows more about the game than you. He said now in American ball you cant attack the head as you could before. He believes Rugby players endure much more pain and are used to it. He feels a Rugby player as he does, can adapt to the American sport in regards to pain inflicted much more than the other way round.

I used to play marbles as a child, it was very popular with the kids in the area. Is this now a recognised official sport? If so what are the official rules?

Conkers was very popular when I was growing up and so much fun

I would have been wiser If I was more careful climbing those trees! I used to love this game as a kid, trying all sorts of methods to harden my conkers, from leaving them next to the window to gain heat to putting them in viniger but nothing ever worked. What I found was best is to use a small conker as the opponent would miss all the time! :yk

:)) They were amazing, the best place to get mine use to be Edgbaston reservoir we use to have a designated monkey climb the trees for us with a bag around him he'd put dozens in there. But that's the thing with the small one, it was very agile but when it gets hit flush lights out aha You had to be very careful with the small one, other times I put so much force that when it hit the bigger conker it would snap in half lmao

Thinking back there were so many games which were probablly unique to the UK. British bulldog was another favourite and there was no rule of tackling above the neckline. Hide and seek or a similar variant was 'tracking' which we spent hours playing.

What about Olympic Style wrestling? that was popular in my school during break times, but quiet brutal at times as well because we use to apply rear naked choke's at times as well. But never threw any strikes, the goal was to get the other person on the floor, so german suplex's, spears, waist lock, head lock, front face lock etc were all employed. In my final year we began boxing using mits, there was this one kid who use to go boxing gym regularly and was 2 years younger, he use to get some good sparring :)) no one had a clue, he'd be so patient, wait for them to make a silly mistake and counter every time lol Come to think of it we did take it too far at times with the combat across all styles and trades but it was a lot of fun. Tracking was a lot of fun and hide/seek when you have the entire school as your play ground :))

I had to give up the wrestling when my dad caught me doing a DDT on my younger brother. I was copying Jake the Snake but then my dad showed me a few moves I had never seen before :yk. I had to give up tracking too as my mom called me home for roti while a group of 10 were looking for me , I was eating away.

On a serioius note, the days were kids would be active as much as we were have long gone sadly. I worry for the UK as imo it's the greatest sporting nation on earth but if we dont have younger ones going out playing all types of different sports we could see this disappear over time.

lmao that happened to me once, I did a pedigree on a younger sibling on the mattress and even though it was a mattress their nose was kinda sensitive and started bleeding, then an older relative saw that and did a WWE style run in to hit me with the nearest available object which was a fan :)) DDT is probably the most influential moves also because of its simplicity everyone wants to do it aha

True, we always found ways to have so much fun. Now people just go on their phones most of the time instead of playing about outside, obesity is a big issue now

Carry on with your America- phobia

I've actually bothered to state my reasons, where are yours?
simple google search would suffice

there have actually been studies on this

asides from spinal injuries, NFL is more dangerous than rugby in relation to most other injuries as far as being dangerous is concerned.

Personally more important is how tactical the sport is and most people would say NFL blows out most sports out of the water in that regard. Ive disccussed that in other posts on the thread

I read somewhere that there is a world championship for marbles. Don't know how authentic it is.

For me

Football
T20 or 50 over cricket

Also have a soft spot for snooker and darts

Did like test cricket but in the past, have gone off it I feel the game is dying and quality has gone down imo don't wanna give my time to watch it .

Have tried to watch tennis did like it in the past when you ivanisevic Agassi, Sampras
But not interested anymore

Don't like f1 or any forms of motor racing

Can't understand NFL or baseball

Have tried to watch rugby union and rugby league but just can't take to it so boring imo

simple google search would suffice

there have actually been studies on this

asides from spinal injuries, NFL is more dangerous than rugby in relation to most other injuries as far as being dangerous is concerned.

Personally more important is how tactical the sport is and most people would say NFL blows out most sports out of the water in that regard. Ive disccussed that in other posts on the thread

I personally think soccer is a much more tactical game than football.

Just because a sport has more tactics doesn't mean it's better lol.

I've read a fair few arguments and its seems the points I have already made keep cropping up. Rugby players feel more , play more continoulsy without rest so therefore are 'tougher' sportsmen.

1)Cricket - Nothing beats a close and tense game in Cricket for me, complete adrenaline rush. Always have had my best memories of sport in Cricket, and nothing will ever beat it, even if it recently there hasn't been too much to be excited about. Love seeing the last ball sixes and the odd bowling rampages. Test matches is where it peaks, but I love T20's too.

2)Basketball - Epic finishes, where defensive blocks can be as hype as a 3pt shot from time to time, nail bitters are always seem to be down to top quality play (unlike in football where poor defending mostly causes crazy games). Not to mention the dunks, seeing some players jumping over these 7ft giants to jam is actually insane. Also love the personalties and charisma in Basketball, there are some players you just have to love (Jimmy Butler).

3)Football- Can be extremely hype, while also infuriating at the same time. That feeling of jumping out of your seat when your favourite players hits one in from 20 yards against your bitter rivals is incredible. The emotions and passion gone into it, just adds to the entertainment for me. I love the tactical side of the game and it just makes the sport more of an attractive proposition to me.

4)Boxing- Boxing is a top sport for me, the mental toughness needed for it and the amount of training and effort given by boxers at all levels has to be respected. It's intense to watch, and even though I don't know much about it or watch it often, it always gets me hooked (no pun intended). The drama surrounding the fights can go either way, it can add to the fight or hinder it, I'm not the biggest fan which is probably why I don't follow the sport as much as I would.

Not really a big fan of NFL or Rugby, the idea of it isn't really entertaining to me. Literally couldn't careless about the superbowl or the six nations. Tennis is a decent sport, but I don't have the same connection with individual sports like I do with team sports.

I've recently been watching a lot of basketball. I've decided to follow the Cleveland Cavalliers because of LeBron James, he's simply brilliant!

Which team you do you follow if any?
