This thread is about teams who we expected to compete well but instead suffered humiliating defeats in test matches or series.

From the top of my mind :

Pakistan in SA 2012-13 : one of the most one sided test series you'd ever see especially considering the hype created due to performance of Pakistani pacers in India

Pakistan vs zimbabwe, september 2013 : what a shocker! Who would have expected minnows to beat Pakistan in real cricket

And now
India vs Australia , 1st test feb 2017 : everybody expected Aussies to be rolled over but instead they humiliated Indian batsmen by a massive margin exposing their lack of ability against quality spin in spinning conditions.

Which other matches do you think fit this category?

England losing a test to Bangladesh?

India Australia one being discussed separately so focus on other nations.

England losing in West Indies and Bangladesh tops it all off. To be fair, Pakistan lost to a formidable to Zim side when they had a couple of world class players like Jarvis and Taylor.

That excuse of zim having world class players when they beat Pak is laughable bro. That was an unbelievable loss which i couldn't have imagined in a thousand years. Chatara made hafeez tremble in his boots.

90s greats lost to Zimbabwe as well, we have struggled historically in their conditions

Yeah, perhaps. There's no denying in the fact that the loss to Zim trumps all other defeats.

England - Australia 2013 Ashes in Australia.

The whole series was an almighty mental disintegration for England, with several players running home with their tails between their legs.

Does anyone remember Sharjah 2002 ??? :)))

Yes, it reminds me of that. This is Australia's most ruthless performance in Asia since they dismissed us for 50 in both innings in Sharjah.

Pakistan losing a Test to WI in the UAE was much more humiliating then England losing one in the WI. Tbf, Bangladesh is a formidable team at home now especially against non-Asian sides. They are no longer pushovers, and perhaps might even beat the likes of SL at home.

England's most humiliating result was last summer when they failed to beat a mediocre Pakistan side. Yes Stokes only played 1 Test and Anderson was struggling with injury + they had passengers like Hales, Ballance and Vince in the top-order, but they should have still found a way to win that series, especially when we saw how flat Pakistan were in NZ and Australia.

For Pakistan, losing to WI in the UAE and the losing in Zimbabwe was extremely humiliating. The Sharjah pasting at the hands of NZ was also a big low, but we were fresh off thrashing Australia so it didn't stand out much.

True about struggling in their conditions but zimbabwe actually had world class players in 90s. Recently in 2013 when they won against Pak, they were on the verge of extinction.

England losing a test to Bangladesh?

It was not so humiliating.because eng was the weakest among the bigs in Bangladesh historically and now a days Bangladesh become stronger than ever at home. So it could happen.

In the last few years,

Eng losing to 9th ranked teams. If I am right then it was first win for BD against a big team.

Pakistan losing to un-ranked Zim team.

Eng losing to WI or Pakistan losing to NZ is not comparable to losing test matches to minnows.

Pakistan nearly won the Cape Town test in that 2013 series and had a good first day of the tour as well. The scoreline was one-sided but it was hardly the most one-sided beating you would see.

Pakistan losing to Zimababwe was pretty embarrassing though. However, it was away from home.

In the first test Pakistan were bowled out for 40 odd, SA beat the living daylights out of Pakistan. The second test got a bit close because of ajmal and a spinning track thats it. Third test was a thrashing of epic proportions. It was pretty one sided overall.

The second test wasn't a "bit close", we were ahead for the majority of the test and even towards the end, were in with a shot of winning it. Yes, we got destroyed in the last game but in the first, we bowled them out for 240 in the first innings.

It was nowhere near the most humiliating defeat of the last few years when you take into account that all this occured in South Africa, against arguably the third greatest team of all time.

Pakistan Losing to Zim at Home - 1998
Pakistan Losing to WI in UAE - 2016 (Came close to losing another Testmatch)
England losing to BD - 2016

I could have predicted it, even in my sleep i.e. India gets humiliated in the worst way, rather than admitting they got their behinds handed to them by a 2nd grade Aussie team (especially considering the overall experience of the team and also the fact most of them had rarely played a test or two in India till now). What do Indian fans do, they try to turn that in to something of a look Pak was humiliated even worse such and such time LOL, loosers and moaners want to be called the best cricketing nation in the world, not gonna happen with such a mentality!

If Indian fans want to go remind us about 2000-01, aren't they the only major team to have lost not one but two ODI's to Kenya, yes that team of giants that was world champs in, drum roll, NEVER:shezzy

And it only took India ages to win their first ever test in cricket and that series win against the best team ever (from back then) aka NZ, only took them like forever

Let's define recent first cause by 2000 standards didn't India get humiliated in England 4-0 back to back a few years back?

Anywho, wasn't there some test going on in a world number 1 team's backyard, what happened today, rain or something?:sk

Bangladesh are no longer minnows, especially in their own conditions against western nations at that.
I won't be surprised to see one of SA, Aus, NZ or Eng losing a series there in the next 5 years. I might throw Sri Lanka in there for good measure.

Bangladesh cricket is on the up. Teams must do away with two match series when touring there.

@Mods please be kind enough to remove "apart from India" from the title now that the fever of 1st India vs Aus test is over.

India vs England 2011 tour 0-4 defeat was pretty embarrassing. Unfortunately, it was followed further by 0-4 vs Australia same year.

England losing to Australia 0-5 was humiliating too and so is their loss to India few months ago.
