What's new

MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh - End is here

India do not have 'Culture of Farewell game' and hope it stays that way. Yuvraj should've known that his time is up and should've bowed out on his own rather than getting dumped. If you look in past, players like Sehwag, Dravid, Ganguly, Raina, etc were all dumped when they regressed. Indian players just dont know when to call it off until and unless they are dumped by selectors. I just dont want we start this 'farewell series' culture and miss the opportunity to experiment with youngster.

BCCI should just give a phone call or whatever and appreciate his service for Indian cricket(keep it low profile and behind the screen).

We gave one to SRT and also to Ganguly. Yuvi had been an LOI legend for us and IMO he deserves one for that. And Raina hasn't gone anywhere.Dude is only 30 and will be back to ODI team after he regains his fitness.Jadhav is very poor fielder and runner to be in our ODI team and that will come and bite us in the backside in future games.

Jadhav is in for his hitting ability, his bowling is also a bonus. SRT's farewell game was more like money spinner for BCCI. Like i mentioned players do not deserve a special treatment. Players like Z Khan and Sehwag too were legend for us but even they didnt got the farewell game.

Raina is probably history now unless if he somehow regains his 2011 form and fitness.

International cricket is serious business. It is not a place for giving farewell to those past their prime.

SRT's farewell was a test series and BCCI would have got more money by scheduling an ODI/T20 series if theey wanted to mint money as Tests get very few eyeballs. Ganguly also got his farewell series.

Regarding Jadhav, I am not that confident with his hitting abilities. He is more of a boundary hitter rather than somebody like Raina who can go big from ball one.Yes his stats are better at the moment but he got that mostly due to the performance against England on our pattas. Failed in CT and also struggled in Srilanka. And he bowls absolute pies which will be taken to cleaners as batsmen start to get more familiar.
My main problem with him is his pathetic fielding.Modern ODI games are played on absolute pattas and our bowlers have conceded the most number of 300 plus totals in the recent history. In such times, good fielders are worth their weight in Gold.A brilliant catch, a sharp run-out or even a brilliant stop in the covers would give you a much needed wicket and boost your team's morale. And a bad fielder like Jadhav would give the game back to the opposition by his single mistake. And he is already 32 and will get even worse by 2019.

Regarding Raina, Team management still trusts him and that is why even with a potbelly he was in T20 series against England this year. And was hitting better than Jadhav and even saved a sure-shot 6.That is the kind of enthusiasm he brings on to the field. From his recent Instagram videos, it seems like he is working hard on his fitness and has batted well in yday'ss Duleep Trophy match.

The Sri Lankan mystery spinners were better than you give them credit for. Dhoni tacking them and rescuing the team in two matches was invaluable.

Dhoni is worth much more than the runs he scores. He lifts the morale of the side while rescuing the batting. This is in addition to his keeping where he is the best available choice in ODI and T20.

I didn't see any mystery bowlers, all I saw was a bowler than was bowling leg spin and off spin, and fast bowlers than bowled 3 bad balls per over.

25*, DNB,DNB, 9 in CT is not failing. He doesn't get chance because to accommodate no hitting ability Dhoni they push him further down the order. This guy should be getting his chance at #5

Dhoni's form has been exceptional of late.
In 2017 , Dhoni has scored 1 century and 5 50's at an average of 89.57

As expected, Yuvi's career is over with a few false dawns which was very obvious.

Dhoni's case is same. Considering he is an amazing ODI batsman, he can manage even when he is not 60%. But make no mistake, he will lose you the match when the time comes cos his hitting ability is done. He struggles to rotate strike as well as hit.

He would need a lot of luck to ride on till WC 2019 and need an even bigger luck to come out of it unscathed.

I would pick a limping Dhoni over a Rahane but ideally both have to go.

Dhoni the cool hitter is gone though. He is good at playing a second fiddle - coming down the order he needs to make runs faster. Except Rahane everyone else makes runs much faster.

dhoni ahould come at 4 or at 5 maximum.pandya is playing he role of a hitter. sensible-indian-fan

Better retire.
I think that you are correct in saying that dhoni has lost his hitting ability. However i am pretty certain that none of the present keeper batsmen in india come close to him. At his position people like dinesh kartik are also not going to be much effective . Only reasonable option is rishabh pant who i think will be better to get after 2019 wc. Also the wc is going to have a lot of matches. You can surely expect 1 or two top order collapses and this is where dhoni is required. He may have played a second fiddle in most of his recent innings but it was his presence in the middle more than anything else which won it for india. He may no longer be the big hittibg finisher but his knowledge his calmness and match winning ability is required for india to lift 2019 wc. Also his fitness is not an issue and his wicketkeeping is probably best in odis at present.

Better retire.

yes i think the same but he is that stubborn ,so at least he should play on better position....and remember ur identification of time for the retirement is very much necessary to make u great .but unfotunately sumcontint player dont do it.except few..

Without claiming that it´s any sort of a revival of his career - because he has at times in the recent month looked to be very uneasy at the wicket, even when he has scored runs - it´s a fact that his overall numbers post-captaincy reflect a some kind of improvement. Only time will tell how much of a revival it is, and he´d need to play well for some period of time to prove it, but it clearly seems that the technical adjustment made after the series in the West Indies is helping his cause. Of late he seems to a lot more comfortable at the crease and the not-connected heaves over mid-wicket in the slog-overs have disappeared slightly; so he seems to be connecting them better.

In my observation as a fan, he looked most comfortable yesterday in some time now - far better than even when he scored 134 against England in January this year. I saw vintage MS in the last two-three overs. That six off Faulkner in the last over was amazing, simply amazing! He has hit many with immense power and many much more important than it, but I don´t think I´ve ever seen him hit a more pleasing-to-the-eye six than that. I loved it!

Dhoni stays, cut him slack. Scored a ton 2 matches ago, then a 78. This guy still has at least another year in him. Never had the most stylish technique or whatever but what his street smarts and craftiness that got him to ATG status.

When Misbah played an innings like this, 50 at a sub 50 SR Indians would praise him, saying things like it was a heroic innings on a sinking ship and I would always wonder if they were messing with us or genuinely meant it. But now that the shoe is on the other foot...

Thank you good sir. He's a once in a generation talent. Believe me, had he not taken 1 for the team and demoted himself to 5 or 6 and stayed at 3, there's a chance he would be surpassed Sachin as India's most prolific ODI batsman.

Time for Dhoni to step aside - age has caught up with him and he's not even 50% of the batsman he used to be 5-10 years ago.

Next T20 WC is in 2020 (Australia) - there's no chance that Dhoni makes that tournament so what's the point in him playing T20Is right now?

Please for the love of God someone retire Dhoni atleast from T20i's...

The only reason he is playing is to keep his IPL contract in six/seven figures.. Selfish from him and absolutely stupid from selectors..

He's going to end up with respectable numbers on paper but his batting for the first 20-25 balls was pathetic considering the match situation.

The best finisher the game has seen is nearly finished. All good things come to an end and Dhonis innings has entered its final ball.

I am beginning to think Dhoni is not as selfless as people think he is.

He has never been a good T20I player. I am sure Saha will do much better than him.

People should not be surprised, he is as bad as he always was.
In fact, check his average, he is getting better & better. He has finally scored a t20 fifty and nearly a second today.
Super finisher!

Yuvraj is finished . MSD will hang around until India produce a replacement who is better with the gloves and contributes more with the bat.

MS Dhoni Would Never Block Way For Any Youngster, Virender Sehwag Counters VVS Laxman

MS Dhoni received some flak from former cricketers, especially VVS Laxman, following the second T20I against New Zealand on November 4. Despite scoring a solid 49 off 37 when India had already lost half their side in the chase, the likes of Laxman and Ajit Agarkar decided to criticise the former India captain, saying that it was time he gave up T20 cricket. Laxman had said it was time Dhoni gave youngsters a chance in T20 format. However, Dhoni's former teammate and swashbuckling India opener Virender Sehwag provided the perfect counter to Laxman's statement.

Speaking to India TV, Sehwag backed Dhoni and said that he would never block the way for any youngster and step down at the right time.

"Team India needs MS Dhoni at the moment, even in T20 cricket. He will step down at the right time. He will never block the way for any young cricketer," the big-hitting opener said.

Sehwag had earlier said that the Indian team was "yet to find a suitable replacement" for Dhoni.

But Sehwag did have a small advice for Dhoni,"Dhoni should realise his role in the team. He has to change the momentum early while chasing a strong total. He has to score from ball one and the team management should make him understand this point".

"The team management needs to tell him that he has to play freely from the first ball. The management should assure him that even if he gets out, he should keep on playing attacking cricket," he added.

Chasing 197 for a win in Rajkot, Dhoni came into bat with 67 for four in 9.1 overs. Despite Virat Kohli going great guns at the other end, India didn't have too much batting left after Dhoni. The likes of Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah were the players left.

Dhoni made a slow start and failed to rotate the strike as regularly as some of the experts would have liked. During his stay in the middle, Dhoni scored 26 runs in boundaries from five deliveries (3x6, 2x4) but managed only 23 from the remaining 32 deliveries.

India lost Kohli in the 17th over with the score on 123 and Dhoni departed in the final over as India fell short by 40 runs.

Really has started to bat like how Misbah used to for us. Nevertheless India need him for his captaincy alone. Kohli will be lost without him.

Sehwag should be the last one to talk about blocking a place for youngster. Seriously, it seems Indian seniors are hell bent on destroying the Indian cricket and bringing back the days when we were minnows.

Have you even read what he Sehwag said? He is saying that Dhoni would retire if there was a young keeper who was performing consistently with bat and with the gloves in domestic cricket.

Kohli is doing fine in tests without MSD.

So how can a young KEEPER PERFORM if an certain OLDIE is hanging on to the place?

Dont give me this crap that there is no replacement, we do have Sanju Samson, Pant, and if needed KL Rahul can also be experimented with him being Keeper batsman. Fact is Dhoni is too selfish to retired and let a younger player replace him. Like many Indian players of past, he too will be disposed off sooner or later.

Last I heard Pant and Samson were inconsistent at domestic level so that's why they haven't been selected. KL has fitness issues so not point of buderning him with the gloves and make him open as well.

Pant is averaging 60 in domestics and if thats inconsistent than Dhoni is even worse.
At least with Pant he will only get better from here as he is just 20 where as Dhoni will only get worse from here. Some of you Pakistani fans have infinite love for Dhoni but he as a player is finished and holding up a place for younger player. A Selfish player

Well i wasn't aware of Pant averaging that much, the last I heard he was struggling for form.

I have seen Pant in the IPL, he looks good.

Yes we like Dhoni because of what he's done for India cricket but he still gets a lot of critiscm. But if the Indian selectors don't think their is a better replacement he won't be dropped.

He isnt dropped because he got too much influence in Indian cricket. He has done good for Indian cricket but every passing day seeing him costing us match undo all the hard work he done for us. He is slowly turning into Villain of Indian cricket.

Its matter of time before he is disposed off and rightly so.

I think India should replace him in T20s. I think he will play till 2019 WC. Kohli likes having him around.

Thiruvananthapuram: Livid with constant scrutiny of Mahendra Singh Dhoni's finishing skills, India captain Virat Kohli hit back at the critics for "conveniently" singling out one man while ignoring failure of other players, including himself.

Dhoni's 37-ball-49 in the second T20 International that India lost to New Zealand was panned by experts as he played too many dot balls.

While VVS Laxman has said that someone younger should be tried in T20s, Virender Sehwag has asked the team management to make the former skipper understand his "role in the team".

"I don't understand why people are pointing him out. If I fail as a batsman three times, no one is going to point fingers at me because I am not over 35," Kohli's sarcastic jibe at the post-match media conference was not lost on anyone.

"The guy is fit, he is passing all the tests. He is contributing to the team in every tactical way on the field. With the bat, he did really well against Sri Lanka (away series) and Australia," the skipper reminded everyone.

Kohli said that while being critical of Dhoni, one needs to understand that how much time he is getting to bat.

"In this series, he didn't get much time to bat. You have to understand that the position he comes in to bat, even Hardik Pandya could not score in that game so why are we pointing out one man? Hardik as well got out in the last T20 in Rajkot. You are conveniently targeting one man, which is not fair."

Kohli then elaborately explained how difficult it becomes for Dhoni when he comes into bat.

"By the time, he comes in, the run rate is already 8.5- 9.5. The wicket is also not the same like when the new ball is being bowled. Batsmen who are set at the top find it easier to strike the ball straightaway compared to guys who come lower down the order. The kind of wickets that we played on, wear and tear has been much more in the latter half, said the 29- year-old skipper about his predecessor.

"You have to assess everything. As team members and management, we understand the situation when people go in to bat, we don't get emotional and excited about opinions of people who are looking at things from a different point of view. You understand how the wicket is behaving, in what situation you are in."

Dhoni had scores of 25, 18 not out and 25 in the three ODIs while he scored 7 not out, 49 and 0 not out in the T20s but Kohli didn't seem too worried.

"He is doing absolutely fine. He is working hard on his game, understands his role but it doesn't come off every time. He hit a six in Delhi and it got showed five times in the post-match show and suddenly he doesn't score in one game and we are after his life," the India captain said.

He also advocated patience when it came to Dhoni and said no one had the right decide for him
.
"People need to be a bit more patient. He is a guy who understands where his cricket is. He is a very smart guy and understands where he stands with his body and game. I don't think anyone else has the right to decide that for him," Kohli's attacking stance made it evident that team management has full faith in Dhoni.

Leave it to Dhoni, says Azharuddin

Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin feels that MS Dhoni will call it a day only after the World Cup in England in 2019.

As has been the case for over a while now, voices are growing louder on louder on ex-India skipper Dhoni's utility in India's limited-overs teams, especially the abridged format - T20s. And those voices have echoed yet again during the T20 series against the Kiwis. Once known as the best finisher in the world, MSD has not been the same Dhoni of yore and former India batsman VVS Laxman and former opener Aakash Chopra, now television pundits, have questioned his selection.

But Azharuddin, one of the most successful Indian captains, believes that the decision should be left to the man himself and felt that Dhoni would go on and figure in the 2019 World Cup. Dhoni himself has said repeatedly that he would like to see out the showpiece event to be held in England.

"I don't know what is going through his mind so I really don't know. I think it should be left to him but as far as I can read it, I think he will probably go on and play the 2019 World Cup. It appears that way to me," Azharuddin told the Khaleej Times in an interview on Thursday.

Azharuddin, who played 99 Tests and 334 one-day internationals, was in Dubai as a speaker for the UAE-India Economic Forum 2017, where he delivered a speech titled: 'Two Nations: One Passion - How Cricket Brings Together Both Nations.'

Azharuddin also weighed in on India-Pakistan cricket ties, saying that it was up to both the governments to decide on it.

"It is up to the governments of the two countries. It is not the players who decide. The two governments decide on that. Opinions of anybody, to be honest, doesn't matter. We can say that this is my opinion but that opinion will not be taken into account because since it is at the diplomatic level. The higher ups of the two countries will decide. There are so many issues. Sport is one thing but at the end of the day, there are so many different issues, security and various other factors. So, everything put together, it is not very easy," said the 54-year-old.

Azharuddin was one of that rare breed of players blessed with wristy batsmanship along with ML Jaisimha and VVS Laxman and he said that he see shades of himself and the other two in current Indian captain Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane.

"It comes naturally. You can't say that you have to practice to become wristy. Sometimes, things come naturally to you and you improve upon it. That is most important. I was lucky to have that talent. I only came to know that I was a wristy player when I scored my first hundred. Before that, I didn't know anything at all. "Now, most of them have become very wristy. Virat Kohli, (Ajinkya) Rahane, they have become very wristy and have used it very well. The game is changing and there is so much of wrist involved nowadays," observed Azharuddin.

Azharuddin is one of the few batsmen to have begun and ended their Test career with a hundred and although he finished up one short of 100 Tests, he had no regrets on how his career played out.

"I don't regret it. I'm very happy that I played 99 Test matches and I was very happy to score a hundred in my first match and hundred in my last Test. So, I'm very happy and I don't have any complaints or regrets. That was how my career was supposed to end. It is destiny. You have to carry on and accept it," he said.

Yuvraj Singh Admits Failure, But Not Willing to Give Up Until 2019

Colombo: Yuvraj Singh has no qualms in conceding that he has been "failing" but the out-of-favour Indian cricketer says he won't give up on his career at least till 2019. The 36-year-old all-rounder, who played a pivotal role in India's 2011 World Cup triumph, has been struggling to keep a place in the side for some time now.

"I would like to tell that I am failing. I still fail. I failed the last three fitness tests but yesterday I passed my fitness test. After 17 years I am still failing," Yuvraj said. Speaking at an interactive session organised by UNICEF here as part of 'The Power of Sports to Shape the Future of Adolescents' campaign, the veteran said his career decisions will be solely decided by him.

"I am not afraid of failure. I have gone through ups and downs. I have seen defeat and that's what's the pillar of success. "To be a successful man, to be a successful person in your life, you need failure and you've got to be defeated. That will make you a stronger person and it will take you to the next level," he explained.

Yuvraj said he is not quite sure how many people believe in him given his recent slump but he hasn't stopped believing in himself. "I am still playing. I don't know what format I am going
to play. But I am pushing everyday as hard as I used to, may be harder than before because I am getting older. And I see myself playing cricket till 2019 and obviously take a call after that," he said.

"So I still believe in myself. As I said I don't know how many people believe in me but I do believe in myself," Yuvraj added. The left-hander has played 40 Tests, 304 ODIs and 58 T20 Internationals in his 17-year-career scoring 1900, 8701 and 1177 runs across the respective formats.

He had recently hit the headlines for skipping Ranji Trophy matches to train at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. It was learnt that he did so to clear the 'Yo-Yo' fitness test, which he had failed in the past.

http://www.news18.com/cricketnext/n...ot-willing-to-give-up-until-2019-1594595.html

From the very first day he came back after fighting cancer, he has been clear that he will play upto WC19 and retire happily after that.

India should not pick yuvraj for sentimental reasons. Only on merit. Don't see him making the team on merit.

I think it’s time for him to go, he’s blocking the path of youngsters.

Isn’t India supposed to be a batting factory? Surely there should be some able replacement in the middle order who will make people forget Yuvi :ashwin

Conveyor belt is blocked by Yuvi , Dhoni , Jadhav etc.

Yuvi is gone for sure. He is not making a comeback. Dhoni will play for a while before he retires as well. India need to think about his backup. There is none at the moment. Don't want them to push Rahul to keep just to play him in the X1.

Dhoni is not someone to hang around with World Cup just a year and a half away. Only way he's going out before World cup is getting dropped.

It does not matter if Dhoni plays till the world cup or not. The fact is that we don't have a back up. What happens if Dhoni gets injured and is forced to miss the world cup? What are our options? Parthiv Patel? Dinesh Karthik? We don't have a single young keeper tried out till now. I was hoping they would do it in the SL series but it did not happen. The BCCI and team management need to talk to Dhoni and tell him that even though he will play the world cup, We would have to rest you for couple of ODI series to play some young keeper, not Karthik or Parthiv.

Sanju Samson need to be given a look in. We can't just sit and dwell on Dhoni's retirement. ATM he is very relaxed without any competition. The only very specific scenario where Dhoni is still good is ; Chasing a low target with India in trouble , having a batsman at the other end who can take the initiative. Then Dhoni can hold one end up. But this is too specific a scenario to give a player a long run in.

Spécialist of these knocks like Misbah, that are only goinfre one way, India loosing!

Well we have to back the keeper who's playing the A-series then.

Right now Kohli, Ravi and Dhoni himself wants to play 2019 World Cup. So that's that, he averages over 60 this year.

He needs cricket to keep his fitness and form going, if he played test cricket it was a different thing.

Why don't we rest Rohit and Dhawan? The only time either of them don't play is because of injury. They are never rotated to find a backup opener.

If by chance Dhoni is nursing an injury, it will present an opportunity to find a backup. Until then it's pointless to drop him.

Thanks to Dhoni the focus on individuality has ended. Nehra too got a Delhi farewell game by chance but the old folks sure felt entitled when it came to farewell games.

Sehwag doesn't miss a chance to take a shot at BCCI at how he was dropped and never given a chance to play his farewell game.

Do you even cricket?

As I said it was a good innings. But tell me how did it even gave us a chance. For such an experienced player,he wasn't farming the strike well.He got out with 12 overs to go,in an over where he already had a boundary. His own innings at Chennai vs Pak was a masterclass.

Anyway it once again shows that Dhoni's only utility now is at no.4 where he has some overs to go.He has lost the finishing and big hitting from word go skills once had.We mostly get pattas now so he needs to improve on his SR now. Also we need to groom Pant as reserve WK in WC,not Karthik

This will be my lineup going forward

Dhawan
Rohit
Kohli
Dhoni
Rahul
Iyer/Pant/Jadhav
Pandya
Krunal/Sundar(not sure about him)
Bhuvi
Kuldeep
Bumrah

Chahal is great but we need some batting depth overseas. Also need to axe guys like Rahane,DK and try youngsters

His innings couldn't give us a chance because a batsman can't bat alone for 50 overs and give the team a defend-able score. But he did stand out as he wasn't troubled as other batsman. So give him some credit for that rather than downplaying his innings. The masterclass innings at Chennai was due to support from Ashwin, Kuldeep and Bumrah seemed like giving him support before they both threw it away, not their fault of course, it was top orders responsibility.

As for your lineup. Kohli has made it quite clear, Rahul as middle order batsman is a no-go. He's our reserve opener. Jadhav and Karthik arent reserve keepers, they are in the side primarily as batsman, if need be(injury to Dhoni) they will have to step up to the keeping role.

There is no need and nor is there enough time to brood in Pant. After the fame, he had a dull stint with A-side. No point pushing him to deep end and spoiling what can be a bright career.

MS Dhoni Set To Continue Till 2019 World Cup, Says Chief Selector MSK Prasad

Chairman of selectors MSK Prasad on Saturday made it clear that Mahendra Singh Dhoni is set to continue till the 2019 World Cup as some of the younger keepers, who have been tried, have not performed on expected lines. Prasad's views seemed to suggest that Delhi captain Rishabh Pant has now fallen off the radar quite sharply with the second keeper in limited overs being 32-year-old Dinesh Karthik.

Asked if they are looking at Dhoni on a series by series basis, Prasad said: "We are grooming some wicketkeepers during India A tours. But more or less, we have fixed up (our) minds till the World Cup (on continuing with Dhoni) and after that at later stages we will start grooming some of those (wicket-keepers)."

"I think MS Dhoni still remains the No 1 wicket-keeper in the world and day in and day out we have been saying this. In the current T20 series (against Sri Lanka), the stumpings he has effected and caught-behind he has taken are phenomenal," Prasad was effusive in his praise.

"There is no comparison and I don't see any wicket-keeper, who can even come closer to him in world cricket, leave alone Indian Cricket," his statement more or less sealed the fate of all young keepers till the 2019 World Cup.

What Prasad said after that would be pretty disturbing for the likes of Pant and Sanju Samson, who are next in line.

"Let me tell you frankly, those boys still are not up to the level as what we would have expected. We will still be giving them chances on India A tours and see that they are nurtured," Prasad, himself a former India stumper, said.

Now the only hope left is if this clown can be kicked out of the selection committee.

He made his 'last over chaser' name mainly in the IPL, has more misses than hits in internationals. If he fails even in the IPL he should retire promptly

Where is Yuvraj. I actually feel he has more to offer India than Dhoni.

Is he still playing in domestic cricket?

He is playing in domestics but he hasn't done anything of note this season.
Yuvi wanted to play WC 19 and retire but there is no hope for that, i think yuvi is going to retire in the upcoming series vs Aus in india. He surely deserves a farewell.
