Mirpur: There is one thing about MS Dhoni that even his staunch critics will applaud. Whether he is on or off the field, he loves to walk the talk. So, when he declared that the hostility associated with an India-Pakistan encounter is long over, Dhoni meant it and his latest act has proved it.

The Indian captain on Saturday arranged a complimentary pass for a die-hard Pakistani cricket fan Mohammed Bashir, who came all the way from Chicago to support his team.

Although Pakistan were knocked out in the group stage, Bashir has stayed back to watch India play the finals and now has become a "die-hard Dhoni fan" having interacted with the Indian captain.

"I was watching India's training session yesterday but I didn't have any tickets. Dhoni is familiar with my face as he has seen me before the Champions Trophy's Indo-Pak game in Birmingham. I told him that I don't have a ticket to watch the finals.

"Dhoni then called some "Kaka" (trainer Ramesh Mane or 'Mane Kaka') and told him to arrange for my ticket. Kaka promptly gave me a complimentary pass. I am completely moved by his gesture," the new "Chacha Pakistani" told PTI today.

He was over the moon after Dhoni also briefly interacted with him. "He (Dhoni) asked about me and I told him that I am settled in Chicago. Since I was standing there for a long time, he told someone to give me fruits. I am a Pakistan fan but for today, I am a Dhoni fan. Also I have another India connection. I am Hyderabad's son-in-law as my wife hails from the region," a proud Bashir said flaunting his final match pass.

During Pakistan's matches, Bashir, who would be in his early 50's, could be seen wearing a giant sized kurta in the design of his national flag. He has also been a big hit among the local fans after supporting Bangladesh during one of their matches.

Bashir runs a Mughlai restaurant in Chicago named "Ghareeb Nawaz" which specialises in biryani. He is mad about cricket and will also be travelling to Australia and New Zealand next year for the 50-over World Cup.

"I have booked tickets for all the Pakistan matches. Those cost around 20 dollars save the Indo-Pak match ticket. It cost me around 80 dollars but never mind, it's an India-Pakistan match, I would have bought it had it cost even more," Bashir said.

Asked if he won't invite Dhoni to taste his restaurant's biryani, the talkative fan gets a trifle embarrassed. But Dhoni won't mind if Bashir can raise the 'pitch' as Team India fights it out on a different pitch.

Dhoni is sure to get bucket loads of brownie pts here now.

Dhoni has always been a top bloke. Humble and down to earth.

Dhoni is a pretty classy and mellow guy in general. Even the way he interacts with his own team regardless of the situation.

Not surprising at all with this gesture.

Dhoni is a legend on and off the field

This Mohammad Bashir guy probably has no self respect in my opinion.

This is same guy did the same thing in the 2011 World Cup, at that time, it was a very kind indian fan who gave him his own ticket.

If you dont have tickets, then why do you travel all the way from Chicago to a cricket tournament, and try to get freebies from the public or players.

What a loser

Still hats off to Dhoni for giving him tickets!

This new chacha is also a familier face in India. He was seen outside almost every stadium during 2011 WC.

Die hard fans like him deserve a kind gesture like this once in a while.

Nice gesture by Dhoni.

By the way wasn't this Chcha wearing SA shirt during Semi Final?

Chacha wears many shirts and hats. He is a true and most unbiased celebrity cricket fan.

A bit harsh really.
As an Indian, i wont mind if any Indian/foreign die hard fan comes without a ticket and is looking to secure one by legal means. Such tournaments are nothing short of carnivals where the spirit of good will trumps other emotions.
I actually would look forward to accommodate fans who are without a ticket.

You do it once, its ok, but if you keep on begging again, then its not ok....

Its not like this guy is poor or anything... He owns a restaurant...

Either buy a ticket or go home..

Many other fans don't hold ticket aswell, so does that mean all the ticket holders(who spent money on the ticket) give out their ticket for free to beggers?

Met Dhoni once at Southbank in Melbourne.

Just a swell dude, but pretty shy to be honest, which was surprising.

I wouldn't read too much into it. Many Pakistanis and Indians go the extra step to be nice with each other. Probably they know they don't have the best of relations and try to overcompensate.

What a lehr and greedy thing to do asking randomers for tickets. Salute to Dhoni for co operating and giving it :msd

Weird of the guy to ask, but a round of applause to MSD!

Everyone has to admit he's a cool guy.

Its all over the Indian media, even if this incident had not transpired the way it did, it has gotten the coverage and hopefully it will earn some much needed positive publicity for the 'large-hearted' Dhoni who is facing fixing allegations and the investigation with relation to that back in his home country.

I remember there was chacha cricket who also had good relations with other nations' cricketers especially Indian ones. Sometime back, he once came in a Pak morning show and showed pictures of having been invited to dinner at Ajay Jadeja's home, and how well he was treated by Indian cricketers including speaking highly of the down to earth nature of Sachin Tendulkar and his interaction with cricket fans.

There would've been many large-hearted gestures by Indian cricketers with this one accorded to Pakistan fan, but they nevr ended up in times of india or hindustan times the next day. There essence lies in that they were kept private and built healthy relationships with the individual unlike this one, the 'daan' handed over by an 'large-hearted' Indian Dhoni to a 'ghareeb' Pakistani from the 'enemy' nation Pakistan.

This chacha is not a genuine PAkistani fan also. A genuine Pakistani fan is not even watching world T20, for them it was over the day Pakistan was out. I only watched the semi-final match for the qualit of cricket South Africa especially their batting. I never saw this chacha guy in Pak domestic tournaments, This guy only wants to be on tv, happy for him he got the publicity he wanted for a long time.

tickets might have been sold out?

normally this is the case, i couldn't get a ticket for CT or CL what ever you want to call it
6 months before the pak vs india game

I understand where you are coming from, and just maybe i would have felt a bit awkward too had it been an Indian fan in question.. But as a non Pakistani, i dont have any qualms in doing something good for people who traveled from far and wide.

They did their bit by traveling the great distance, the final gesture is def ok by me.

He is alive I think?

Yep. He prolly confused it with the pakistani supporter who showed up reg at the Wagah border ceremonies.

Wonderful gesture.

Had the pleasure of meeting Dhoni a couple of times last year at the Champions Trophy and he came across as a very humble man.

rayfder, it was not Chacha Cricket who died, but it was ChaCha Pakistani.

He's from Chicago and he is married to an Indian woman thus his support for both teams.

He's nice enough but you can't have a real convo with this fan. He just seems to want to hog the limelight. I've met him last year. Don't think he's that big a fan.

no hes not

I think he is creation of Indian sports channel Star, and has no connection whatsoever with Pakistan. He is a Indian Muslim, well settled in USA. He was randomly planted in his 50s. India using it's 'soft' power influence on Pakistan.

Tickets for the match were sold out thats why he was probably asking for tickets.

Wasn't this fan in Bangladeshi colours in one of the games?

That's the reason I like Dhoni, and why I think India fans are mad for wanting him gone.

Kohli is great, but India seem to be a completely different side when Dhoni is playing.

Class.

Stop hating. Let him live his life and you enjoy your own...Khalas who cares he's not doing anything harmful or illegal.

Dhoni was captain when they were being hammered left right and center in sa and nz.
dhoni was captain when they had that 0-8 streak going.

This whole "Chacha (insert team name)" gimmick is quite profitable which you can use to get incentives and advantages such as free tickets and publicity. It's business slapped with the name of patriotism.

Nothing more than an attention seeking exercise to be honest. As if the original Chacha cricket wasn't enough, we have produced his successor as well.

This! I remember how during the Faysel Bank t20 event, there was this guy who dressed up as a a patriotic fan(similar to chacha Cricket) and was allowed to enter in every stand, even in the VIP area.

It also brings a bad name to us. Our fans are begging for tickets outside the stadium.

Kudos to :msd

But now we are begging at individual level as well  :sharif

Well done to Dhoni. Bashir also come across as a nice guy.

...Its not like this guy is poor or anything... He owns a restaurant................

If this is being taken to mean that he owns the restaurant- and the article is vague- I would be also be surprised.

I have lived near Chicago. When I read the name of the restaurant, "Ghareeb Nawaz", I almost jumped right out of my seat.

If this man owns that restaurant, same as the one on Devon, he has to be a millionaire - IMHO. It wasn't much to look at but it was the single most popular desi restaurant in Chicago I'd warrrant.

So when the article says "Bashir runs a Mughlai restaurant in Chicago named "Ghareeb Nawaz"" I'm assuming he must be a manager there, not an owner.

Dhoni is the last of a dying breed in Indian cricket. A true gentleman. One that you cannot hate for his arrogance.

I can assure you no manager can roam around following international teams across the seas without any sponsorship. Only filthy rich guys with financial security can have this luxury.

So he can travel from Chicago but can't buy a ticket? wow.
Anyway Dhoni is a great guy, respect.

Why is he asking for tickets? Maybe they were sold out and he cant actually get hold of one? Perfectly acceptable then

If the guy can travel all around the world just to watch cricket, he can certainly buy a ticket for the final in Bangladeshi taka. My guess is that it was sold out.

I bet to differ. Any die hard cricket fan would've done the same. Specially if the tickets are sold out. Mr Bashir is well respected by cricketers and fans alike and it should be applauded how passionate he is for the game, even supporting other teams at times. Respect where it is due.

Also respect for dhoni increases everyday in my opinion. Great gesture by the great man.

Completely agreed.

This wannabe chacha cricket isn't graceful like the original one.

So the guy lives in the land of opportunity only to spend half the year outside subcontinent's stadiums begging for tickets?

Well said.

Anyone who watched the game today will have seen it was a full stadium.

Credit to him for not repeating the same for next time around then:

He is mad about cricket and will also be travelling to Australia and New Zealand next year for the 50-over World Cup.

"I have booked tickets for all the Pakistan matches. Those cost around 20 dollars save the Indo-Pak match ticket. It cost me around 80 dollars but never mind, it's an India-Pakistan match, I would have bought it had it cost even more," Bashir said.

I'll try and catch him around in New Zealand and ask him for a ticket to a game lol. Shoe on the other foot and all that. :)

Dhoni is all class but this pak fan seems a bit odd

stupid and judgmental comments. I'm pretty sure none of you have actually travelled around the world to watch cricket and have no idea how it goes. Travelling expenses are more than double of what the average ticket cost but as it happens in most World cups, the matches are sold out. People stand in long queues in early morning for these tickets and there are bound to be one who dont get it.

They often buy them in black, why else do you think he held that note with him? and how did you instiage he is not willing to pay for that ticket? ridiculous assumption.

As for attention seeking, did this guy asked the media frenzy to label him chacha or whatever? what are the perks there for him? he is just another passionate cricket fans who follows his favourite team around the world. Is that considered attention seeking? incase you dont know, players appreciate such loyal fans as they share the same passion for the country.

Said this in another thread, but these Indian players are good ambassadors for their country. They were pretty gracious in defeat against us in the Asia cup.

MS really is a superb person. Always felt surprised to see him, how it is humanly possible to rein in your emotions in such tough situations and be calm at all times. He has always remained humble and simple, that's what earned him so many fans.

Great captain/player in shorter formats and even a greater person.

Was this the same guy who was cheering with a pacifier? CT i think..

With a pacifier? I don't understand....

He's a little bit more than bizarre: don't know exactly how much he even knows about cricket.

Free ticket and that to in a final which India lost! That man could not have hoped for more! :p

Hey Marshland, I'm coming to Napier for the Pakistan vs UAE World Cup match. Any hotels you can recommend? I'll be there for 2-3 days.

Go for The Nautilus for your dates of choice before they run out of rooms - they're a popular niche premium offering and occasionally used to house personnel of touring domestic sides as well.

If you're on a tighter budget, then there are a lot of Lodges/Bed & Breakfast services that should suit you and your company just fine. Just make sure you're not too far away from McLean Park!
