What's new

"MS Dhoni is a senior player and should show positive intent" : Sachin Tendulkar

It is no longer within Dhoni's capability to bat aggressively. He can do that against an inferior attack on placid pitches.

SRT should be thankful to Dhoni for winning the cup for him in 2011.

Too much arrogance.

Dhoni knows what he's doing, SRT seems like a jala hua ex-cricketer here.

As for Tendulkar being jala hua ex cricketer, lol you can't be farther from truth. Dhoni can't even dream to be in Tendulkar's shoes.

lol at him being thankful to Dhoni for winning WC '11. OTOH, Dhoni should be thankful to Tendulkar for taking India to the finals.

What SRT says is correct here although i generally don't value his cricket analysis. In world cups you have to make the statement upfront. Tendulkar never shied away from that in world cups.He never played percentage cricket or chose the safer option. He always looked aggressive from the outset. His strike rate in world cups is 89 compared to his career SR of 86. Timid batting won't be rewarded in the world cups.

I will agree with Sachin on this one actually.

Dhoni is probably one of the strongest 6 hitters in the game.

He should go for his shots more. It might not always work but he can take the game away from the opposition when it comes off.

So Dhoni should start hitting from ball one but KL Rahul who opens the inning is allowed to play at a strike rate of 60? KL Rahul is the real culprit in this team. He was hyped to be the next big thing after Kohli. He is turning out to be the next Azhar Ali. Dhoni showed what he can do in a match against Australia. Hopefully they will now send Pandya Ji before Dhoni from next matches onwards. We will see how responsibly he builds a partnership and can take our team to a winning total.

Swinging your bat when the team is in good position is easy even Dhoni did that against Australia. Real test comes when you have to build a partnership. This is where Dhoni is needed the most. Dhoni should play at 4 so that fans can stop crying now.

Also Sachin saying that Dhoni should play responsibly doesn't mean he wants Dhoni to be dropped from the team lol. Not sure why his haters are jumping up and down. :inti

Dhoni will come good when the back will be against he wall.

India, however, really have to strengthen their batting as Dhawan is no longer a part of WC squad. There is no point playing seven bowling options in the expense of weakening your batting. Let us not forget the tail is weak as well.

One of either Vijay Shankar or Kedhar Jadhav has to go. Rishabh Pant need to be brought in the lineup as he will add the missing firepwers in the lineup.

Rohit
Rahul
Kohli(c)
Dhoni(wkt)
Shankar/Jadhav(prefer Jadhav on slow wickets)
Pant
Pandya
Shami
Kuldeep
Chahal
Bumrah

KL Rahul is a fill in opener. Dhoni has been playing in world cups since 2007. Him poking, prodding around against spinners give zero confidence. Playing positively don't mean slogging. Attemping to get into good position to take singles, twos is basic thing that you should be able to do without difficulty. Dot ball king Dhoni relies entirely on scoring quickly in the last 3 or 4 overs. You sound like Dhoni was dominating spinners in recent times lol Lunge master has serious issues against spinners these days. We are not talking about 1 or 2 matches. we are talking about 2 or 3 years. Against AUstralia he made 26? KL Rahul made 11 in 3 balls. So?

Dhoni will show his class in the next match, Sachin is right, cowardly batting by Dhoni and Rahul

Dhoni is not a sportsman but a cunning politician. He took lessons of fake humility from Sachin. Don't expect him to retire gracefully. He will keep hanging as long as he can milk $$$$.

Do u agree with sachin.

Nope. Non Indians won't understand importance of Sachin.

Once my generation dies or becomes irrelevant 30-40 years from now then a cricketer will surpass Sachin. Till we are here in numbers no one can surpass Sachin.

It's not about records or runs, importance of Sachin is much more than cricket.

It wasn’t non Indians who said it.

Pndya and Rahul did

lol it's funny how some Pak posters here make assumptions regarding who is more popular in India, who is more loved in India etc. Truth is no sportsman will ever eclipse Sachin in popularity in India. Sachin was like the lone superstar in India in 90's & at that time the other sports weren't that popular & cricket's popularity in India was at it's peak. Sachin was loved by almost every age group. For lot of kids who grew up in 90's, early 00's, Sachin was like an emotion. None of the players who came after Sachin received that much love & attention from people. Virat might end up as better batsman than Sachin (in LOIs) but he will probably never be loved as much as Sachin. Current people's interests are divided among multiple sports & other entertainment options which wasn't the same case in 90's. It's just not the same anymore.

Your own Indian brethern are smoking Tendulkar for his feeble opinion on Dhoni on social media WRT to the OP. So do not worry about the opinion of Pakistan fans on PP, concentrate on the opinion of India fans.

He was the highest run scorer in that world cup.(from india)
The fact is he tried 6 times and finally succeeded in the last try.

Sachin said which any sane individual who has played cricket or watched for long will understand. Dhoni was not showing intent, he was patting the balls straight back to the bowler or dead batting them and not placing them between the fielders. I think Dhoni underestimated the Afghan's batting and I believe that is the reason he might have played like that and thought anything around 230 or so was enough on that pitch. Otherwise there was no reason for them to play so slowly in the slog overs. Dhoni when he sits and reviews his innings he might agree with Sachin. They are great players and served the nation but are human and will commit mistakes from time to time. Any unbiased individual who has watched enough cricket or played it, will agree with Sachin's comments.

I got news for you, Dhoni was a better captain than SRT, and is a better captain than Virat. If it was not for Dhoni, India would've lost vs AFG.

You sir are a master of taking things out of context. :)))

Yes they are.

So?

As if that reflects the majority opinion.

Good, then you can explain to him that Pakistani opinion on this matter is irrelevant.

I was just correcting your brethren who was having a go at Pakistani fans. Merely pointing out that he had to have a word with Indian fans first.

Kleenex?

Not that srt will get 100% votes.

Pndya and Rahul did

They are in team currently playing under Kohli. Pandya and Rahul are same as the rest of us fans, they gave their opinions as fans although like most of us they were biased for professional reasons.

There still are people who will rare dhoni, Kohli, ganguly, dravid, Kumble, vvs, Yuvi etc above Sachin but end of the day as I mentioned before unless my generation dies or is irrelevant Sachin will be way above everyone else in popularity because of non cricketing reasons and cricketing reasons.

No one claimed IK/Javed are bhagwaans.

:)

They are no where near Sachin who is the greatest cricketer to have ever played the game. If they were like Sachin then Pakistani public would have made them a Messiah too.

But since they are a level below Sachin (Javed is 2 levels below Sachin) they can't be made into messiahs as they aren't the best in the sport they play

That you could find only his last ODI innings to paint him in poor light, shows how well he played in his other 460-odd ODI games.

As for Dhoni, as I said multiple times, you could find dozens of such match losing innings since last WC alone.

Sachin at the twilight of his career was as selfish as Dhoni is right now. When it comes to playing match-winning innings, there is no comparison between them.

Can hardly compare Imran to Sachin since Imran was an all rounder. It’s like comparing apples with oranges.

Yea, a world record 62 MOM awards were won by him by fluke.

lol, Tendulkar selfish?

Had he been selfish he could've easily stayed on for at least ICCCT '13, just like Dhoni who is shamelessly blocking path of youngsters for 4-odd years now.

Time for a “let Sachin talk nah” moment for Dhoni.

Or will he just confirm what Sachin and others are saying?

Lol and some people hold this chameleon in higher esteem than Sachin? Shows how much they know cricket.

And this guy had galls to throw out people like Gambhir and Sehwag for them being too slow?

Was shaky at the start but in hindsight, a decent knock from Dhoni. He is well aware we have a long tail and he took it to the last few overs to up the tempo.

His tuktuking cost us Virat's wicket

Probably.

His SR during the first half of his innings was atrocious...

Hopefully this helps him get some confidence back. We need an in form Dhoni if we are to win this. Too late to bring DK in.

Dhoni took Sachins advice well and performed. Sachin should say something for each of the other batsmen as well. Good luck charm!

1. Dhoni strategically paced his innings and picked his moment in the final over.

2. Dhoni was advising Pandya (who though he's been around for years, still requires it) and helped him score as much as he did.

And so on.

Sachin played ONE rotten ODI innings at the end of his career and it's still talked about by some losers to define his career. The number of times Dhoni has stunk up cricket with his rotten batting is...

Not sure if Dhonis ****** recall that he was booed the last time he was in England for one of the most pointless knocks ever played since Gavaskar in some World Cup.

I bet if you took a poll of hardcore Dhoni fans and whom they voted for, it would be overwhelmingly for Modi. But then again, that's most of India :smith

The only positive I could see today were three shots of his that looked convincing in their timing - the best I've seen from him in a long long time. Didn't follow the IPL so not sure how he looked there. But that's one good thing and we can maybe hope for a finishing flourish to a phenomenal yet chequered career, dotted with a few hypocrisies.

Doesn't Tendulkar look stupid now? Dhoni took India to an above par score via a good placed sensible knock. There is a reason why Dhoni is considered an all time great captain and Tendulkar one of the worst captains to have played the game

Well said.

Just like in T20 he shows intent only in the last over of the match. When someone like Laxman criticzes you have to understand how slow Dhoni was upfront. His game against spin has deteriorated to the extent that he struggles even against journey man like Fabian Allen.

Dhoni was abysmal today. The last over of the innings and one super catch was the only thing that saved him today. Never seen him give so many byes! That said, he is still a better keeper option that DK/Pant.

"MS Dhoni knows exactly what he wants to do in middle. When he has an off day everyone starts talking. He's won us so many games. He has keen understanding of the game. He gives feedback that you know 260 is a good score. He's a legend of the game" - Virat Kohli after today's match.

Sachin should mind his business by letting the random pillionriders on the road to wear helmets!

Are you expecting Virat to say something negative about Dhoni especially when we are in middle of a WC tournament :yk

Sachin should mind his business by letting the random pillionriders on the road to wear helmets!
The connection between the first and last part of this sentence :))

But it got me thinking and I soon realised that Sachin should poke his nose into this Dhoni business because it seems pillion riders only wear helmets when the weather is cloudy :smith

Now I know what it feels like to be an Indian supporter and watching Dhoni bat like this. He's gonna cost them big soon.

Match was lost way before he came.
Wickets in hand 10/11 RPO is not lost in this day and age. That's a pathetic excuse, taking singles and not even trying to have a go at it. Pakistan would never have played in such a pathetic manner.

If a Pakistani player batted with this intent in these circumstances, I know that he wouldn't be in the team for very long. India will soon lose a must win game due to Dhoni and I don't think the fans will forgive him.

10 rpo in last 20 overs is very difficult when the ball is old there is no powerplay and good bowlers can bowl more than 4 overs.

Nice not out for dhoni to boost his average Job well done

So people are blaming Dhoni again.

Rahul 0(9)
Pant 32(29)
Dhoni 42(31)
Pandya 45(33)

Just accept you want Dhoni out of this team already and stop acting like hypocrites here. Pant played a poor inning at 4. Expecting Dhoni to score at 12 rpo is too much. :inti

Pant played a poor innings in the middle overs?

Dhoni played a great innings in the death overs?

Wow.

Match was lost in the top order. Not by Dhoni or Jadhav or Pandya

Rohit was a selfish knock. 10 overs 28/1 is a poor start and then one of Rohit, Kohli and Pant needed to stay after consuming balls

Its the lack of intent from dhoni that is baffling

When u need 10-13 an over its inexplicable to be not out at the end knocking singles around

Like ganguly and nas said players should be going down fighting having a go and not giving up with 5 overs to go when its mathematically still possible and playing for a not out

Dhoni's fetish for not outs and taking things to the last over has cost India more matches than won. Yes he has won India loads of games but i can count so many games he has lost because of his insipid displays and miscalculations at the end. He blindly relies on those 1-2 big hits in the final over to become a hero. That will not work against top professional teams 9 out of 10

You are just using dhoni as a tool to prove that misbah's approach was correct.

I apologize to Pakistan fans that they had to witness a cowardly, gutless innings was Dhoni which totally killed any momentum we had towards reaching the target. For us Indian fans, its normal to see Dhoni play this way but i am sure Pak fans would feel it was deliberate lack of intent. I felt same way after Misbah 2011 mohali innings. India were in the match when Pandya was on crease. Later, England choked his run flow by bowling him length bowls outside off stump and fortifying the long off and midwicket region. Since, Pandya doesnt play scoops or square of the wicket, he holed out to deep mid on. I think match was over by then. Dhoni uncle is way past his expiry date. He is still in the team just because of his political/media connections. I hope Pak makes to semi finals. It is still a possibility.

Don't put words in my mouth. I said if Dhoni innings was poor what does that say about Pant's inning who hacked his way to 32 from 29 balls? :inti
Boosting str rate in last over when u need 40 runs means zilch, runs in last two overs shouldn't even be added to his tally.
Start watch cricket instead of following cricbuzz for a change.

Another stunning innings from the Maestro. Brilliant stuff.

You can always depend on Maestro to do his bleeding job and see the team through.

Sorry folks.

I was wrong about Dhoni here, and unnecessarily criticized SRT.

Bhai....first of all, you didn't say anything about IF Dhoni was poor.

All you said was:

Just accept you want Dhoni out of this team already and stop acting like hypocrites here. Pant played a poor inning at 4. Expecting Dhoni to score at 12 rpo is too much.

Next, if Dhoni played a poor innings, it doesn't mean Pant played one too COS he batted in middle order and not in death with a license to slog at everything like Dhoni.

Well Sachin knows, even in 2011 WC he always showed intent this is the diff.
