"MS Dhoni is a senior player and should show positive intent" : Sachin Tendulkar

No Indian fan realistically expected Dhoni to win it at the end. Maybe 5 years ago yes. Or if this was the IPL :smith

But it's the pointlessness which he exhibits so often that makes it seem like he's mocking the fans and cricket. Him refusing a single in the final over when it was impossible to win was the icing.

Well Sachin knows, even in 2011 WC he always showed intent this is the diff.
True.

Dhoni, can't in million years be able to get close to Tendulkar for what he did for us.

I am not a MSD fan, not even a MSD sympathiser. But these blokes in the middle order have played lot of games now. They should have seen the team through like Dhoni of old. Its not hitting. Its hitting to win we expected from Pant, Pandya Jadhav...if it was at least 40+ after first 10 overs he wud have done it at the end. 14+ for 5 overs in a WC game is beyond everyone <strike>except maybe Kohli</strike>

If at the start of the innings you are planning as a team to chase this down, at the 40 over stage you would want to be 240 for 3 or 4.
These guys were 6 runs off that, so what happened before that stage is almost irrelevant. They got to where they would have wanted too.
Just didn't finish

It was not a pitch for power game. You saw how England batsmen struggled against Srilankan trundlers in the last match.
it is dificult pitch but Dhoni was not even able to nudge the ball for singles against spinner. Jadhav was also not able to take single/double. he played 50 balls, i am sure they get some for six/four.

He played according to plan.
If everyone else played like him it was an easy win.

Sachin has no right to talk about intent when he built a career on record chasing without any regard for the team win...

Dhoni planned it perfectly given the situation. Matter of margins. If that was not a direct hit, he would have targetted 15-18 of final Neesham over and more than likely got it

India missed No.4 and No.5 batsmen throughout (though they had a makeshift No.4 as Rahul which was partially OK, we lost Dhawan which was unfortunate! Still No.4 & No.5 were missing - It was guys like Raina, Yuvaraj who occupied that spot! They were not replaced) Playing guys like Rayudu, Shankar, DK, Rahul, Jadhav and even Pant (he should be at No.6 or 7) was always going to hurt and it did hurt! And the main reason for this was Dhoni (indirectly) because he was blocking 3 spots in the team! He was not willing to take No.4 spot on his own (then at least we could have accommodated other guys in the remaining positions) and then 2 wicket-keepers had to fight for regular batsman slot! Pant at No.6 (would have assured No.4 & No.5 to regular & proper batsmen which unfortunately we hadn't groomed at all!)

Nothing wrong with Dhoni’s innings today as such ,if anything he stayed on unlike Pant, Hardik and lets not even go to the top order!

Felt sorry for him as he walked off and had sort of hoped he could maybe pull it off. But he just kept pushing it to back so hard even when Jadeja was in. The NZ fielders looked rattled and if he'd just added a a few singles or twos to Jadeja's blows, instead of leaving the ball absurdly sometimes.

Sad that such a great career has ended proving the old line - if you keep playing with fire...

Age has caught up to Dhoni. Not his fault.

How can you show intent when you can’t even time the ball properly?

Dhoni should have retired 1-2 years ago with the gloves given to Pant and to play as a lower order hitter. A more competent middle-order batsman should have replaced Dhoni.

It's top 3 heavy and losing Dhawan made a significant difference today. The chance of them all failing on one day is very very low, but if there any lateral movement - Rohit is a walking wicket. This leaves with having to get Kohli out early to finish off the Indian team.

If Pant (or anyone) had groomed and asked to bat at No.6 then he would have scored 70 to 80 runs in the same 75 deliveries, and that was enough for our win today! This is what exactly missed today! Top order collapse can happen to any team including the rampaging Australian team of the past and they used to recover like this! Remember Symonds, Bevan, etc? (Make it clear: Pant should have been groomed earlier in ODIs like he is in tests, and asked to bat at No.6 not No.4 - his game style suits for No.6 or No.7 only not higher and a wicket keeper batsman need not bat above No.6 unless he is special like Gilchrist/Sanga! The rule applies to even Dhoni, even after the successful World Cup 2011 finals he never owned No.4 spot on his own, because he knew he could not handle that job! Once he knew he was not effective batsman, he should have moved on! Probably he thought that he should be in the team for all his experience, guidelines, sharp stumpings, etc! But that alone cannot win you world cup!)
