Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni Saturday made himself "unavailable" for the tour of West Indies but ruled out immediate retirement a day before the selectors meet in Mumbai to pick the squads for the upcoming away series.

Amid mounting speculation around his international retirement after India's semi-final exit from the recent World Cup, Dhoni has told the BCCI that he will take a two-month sabbatical from the game to serve his paramilitary regiment.

Dhoni is an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Parachute Regiment of the Territorial Army.

"We would like to clarify three things. MS Dhoni is not retiring from cricket right now. He is taking a two month sabbatical to serve his paramilitary regiment which he had committed much earlier. We have now intimated his decision to skipper Virat Kohli and chairman of selectors MSK Prasad," a senior BCCI official told PTI on Saturday.

The 38-year-old Dhoni's refusal to take retirement now leaves the ball in the court of the selectors, who were expected to drop him from the squad for the West Indies. India will play three T20 Internationals, as many ODIs and two Tests in the tour starting August 3.

It is believed that the selection committee chaired by MSK Prasad wants to move forward with an eye on future but they would also like to get a sense of where the Indian captain stands on this issue.

"The selection committee has always been clear on one issue. They have no right to tell anyone irrespective of their stature as to when they should call it quits but when it comes to team selection, it remains their domain," a senior BCCI official said.

With Dhoni pulling out of the tour, Rishabh Pant is expected to be first wicketkeeper in all three formats while Wriddhiman Saha will be the reserve wicket-keeper in the Tests.

From now, the focus will be more on T20 cricket keeping the World T20 in mind, which is scheduled to be held in Australia next year.

India will be playing a lot of bilateral three-match T20 series in run-up to the global meet and with Dhoni expected to play one more season of IPL with Chennai Super Kings, things are a bit tricky at the moment.

There are a few questions that the selectors need to answer.
Whether they see Dhoni playing till World T20? If the answer is yes, are they willing to give him 15 to 18 T20s during the phase as a keeper-batsman?

If that answer is also yes, it would boil down to whether skipper Virat Kohli sees him as a batsman in T20s where keeping isn't the primary skill required.

With Dhoni's ever-declining hitting abilities, can he come in at Nos 6 or 7 where he might, at best, get 6 to 8 balls in most games and even less in some?

If that answer is also yes, the next question that would crop up is if he can hit the likes of Jofra Archer, Jason Behrendorff or Mohammed Amir straightaway in the slog overs.

There is a case about Dhoni's stellar success in death overs at the IPL. He always gets one weak Indian bowler -- say a Mohammed Siraj, Harshal Patel or Dhawal Kulkarni or Sandeep Sharma from whom he scores those 15 to 20-run overs.
But would that be possible against a Lockie Ferguson or a Pat Cummins?

The current selection committee's term ends in October when the BCCI elections are scheduled and they would like to put a transition phase in place in consonance with what the captain and the coach want.

However, once the board members take over after the elections and if Dhoni decides to stick with his decision of not retiring, there could be some twists and turns in the coming months.
Till then, all roads lead to the BCCI headquarters on Sunday where Prasad will address the most defining press conference of his eventful tenure.

Compare that to poor Kohli who is desperate to play the WI series to save his captaincy.

All because of some pathetic BCCI conspiracy to sideline him.

Seems like Dhoni fans are still trying hard. He needs to retire.

Appreciation could be given for his other work. But in team India, he needs to be removed from.

What drama this is Why doesnt someone just come and clarify things once and for all what the plan is with dhoni so this day to day speculation and gossip can come to an end once and for all.

Dhoni, please retire already. Kohli, you better step down from captaincy too. Heads should roll after world cup debacle!!

It wasnt a debacle. India was the most consistent side of the world cup. 1 closely lost game against kiwis isnt a debacle.

Dhoni is still one of the fittest cricketer and one of the best performer in India. Pant is not ready at all, let him play some minnows and A tours.

No way he should retire till the next WT20

As the saying goes, "you either die a hero, or live long enough to turn into a villain"

He averages 60 this year

Its shocking that he is being blamed for all the mess.

Saint Dhoni, who has only best interests of his country in mind.

Golden opportunity for Pant to cement his place in the team. If he fails selectors will automatically select Dhoni again. Can Pant put pressure on Dhoni to retire from LOI's? Can he rise above those cute 25-30 runs? Can he stop playing those stupid shots and gifting his wicket away? We will find it out in the next couple of months. Stay tuned. :inti

How come?
They had such a great chance to win this WC, had they chosen a half decent squad. You don't even know how genuine Indian fans are seething with rage how incompetently these 2, plus that clown MSK fluffed India's chances with that joke of team they assembled for this WC.

I mean who picks guys like DK, Jadhav, Shankar, Rahul in a WC team especially when you have so many options to choose from.

how will he serve his regiment? Is he now cross training to become a soldier?

I dunno bhai.

Time will tell.

Dhoni is a Rajput by birth.

Warrior clan.

Patriotism runs in their blood.

He may have felt that he might have neglected his patriotic side for too long by batting at such a low SR for his nation.

So he started thinking how to tackle this...

And BOOM....a creative solution pops up.

He sports the army insignia during the WC.

Now going to serve the regiment even at the expense of losing his national spot.

His patriotic meter goes through the roof.

He becomes a hero again.

Anyone can average 60, if he refuses to actually play attacking shots and thus stays not out. How many of his innings have been match winning performances in 2nd innings or helped us increase the run rate in the first innings.

anyone with a brain knows this guy has nothing to do with india's military.

he is an attention seeker. always pulling up stunts like this, pretty pathetic really

The series in Australia, all of his three innings
48* runs against NZ in the 2nd ODI at the SR of 145 to get to the total of 324
59* runs against Australia in the 1st ODI to chase a difficult total after the collaspe

In the WC
His 28 runs against Afghanistan was the difference between win and loss
He played a cruical knock against WI to set a good total
He is not to be blamed for the semi final loss

It was indeed a debacle. It was a shameful exit in the semifinal. India's age old problems came back to bite in the most important match. Worst thing is that everyone knew these for the last 4 years and nobody did anything to resolve them.

Why do people want Dhoni out?

Do you have a better wk/batsman in the pipeline?

Because it takes time to find a new keeper and several will need to be tried before someone hopefully steps up and cements their place in the side. What's the point of continuing with someone who will be 39 and a half when the next T20 WC comes around and 42 when the next ODI WC takes place?

That's not how it works at the professional level. You don't try "random" people.

If someone has the talent and skills, you spot them at the FC and List A level. Can tell from there who has it. Then you try them. It seems like you have absolutely nobody making headlines in the domestic scene, I mean a WK/bat.

Do you know of anyone?

Even if there is one, you can try him in the T20s and see what he's really capable of. Or try him while MS is resting.

2 month break? He should call it a day, bow out with some dignity instead of lingering like a bad smell.

Do India have immediate replacement for him in T20s? I reckon he should retire from LOIs after the World T20 next year.

Dhoni doesn’t even want to give up T20Is so it’s difficult to try out replacements there.

There may not be a standout keeper ready to take his place but many have been playing well in domestic list a cricket.

For example: Pant, Samson, and Ishan Kishan have shown lots of potential. Do they have flaws? Yes of course but then so did Dhoni when he first arrived onto the scene.

Lmao ur so right man I saw that too he made himself available even for the t20s he always wants to stay in the limelight . He knows Sharma is on the verge of getting the captaincy he can’t admit Sharma is a better captain than him. Kohli winning zero ipls proves that too. He is such a mental midget honestly he’s gonna do anything to save his captaincy

its a good opportunity to see how india performs without Dhoni.

This is the test...
To be perfectly honest and with due respect to WI, I am not sure if this is a challenging test.

Dhoni is a genius mind and clearly has plans to prolong his career.

He is just resting up after the WC. Many other players may also choose to stay at home or take a holiday.

India will need Dhoni for WC 2023. He is the great finisher after all.

I don’t think it’s about money - dhoni is worth well over $100 million and earns $2-3 million a year from cricket and about 10 x that from endorsements. Even if he retired from the national side he’d still have his ipl salary plus many of the endorsements would remain (like they have for Tendulkar for example).

This isn’t about money, he is simply deluded. Like a heavyweight boxer who carries on too long thinking he’s just one punch away from glory again.

Top Army Sources: MS Dhoni’s request to train with the Indian Army has been approved by General Bipin Rawat. He would train with the Parachute Regiment battalion. Some part of the training is also expected to take place in J&K. Army won't allow Dhoni to be part of any active Op

Dhoni sahab looking to play his final World Cup in 2023 in front of his home crowd. His next argument will be if Misbah did it so can he.

Man I've always been a Dhoni fan and I was fine with him carrying on till the 2019 World Cup and retiring on his own accord. However, this is just silly now dude. Your a legend don't tarnish your legacy by carrying on when you have no business to. In my opinion going out in a World Cup is a story book ending and doing it in England which is probably as close to India as it gets outside of India is the story book retirement I'd say. Just hang up the boots now MS.

The endorsements exist because he is an active player. He retires, much of the endorsements go away too, how many ads and billboards feature tendulkar, dravid, ganguly etc?

lol, it's all about money.

Why do you think Tendulkar commentating in WC despite being rubbish at it? He is probably richer than grandpa.

PS: I'm not against anyone earning money (including Tendulkar commentating) provided it doesn't harm Indian cricket.

Tendulkar has repeatedly refused to do commentary. He took up the WC offer as it was during his annual England visit and as it was the WC.

Good on him. As I said I've nothing against him as his commentary stint didn't do any harm to Indian cricket.

Dhoni will not retire. He will continue to play both ODI and T20's. He may retire from ODI's in 1-2 years. But T20's he will not retire. He will play until selectors and BCCI grows some spine and stop selecting him.
