MS Dhoni Rates Shoaib Akhtar as Toughest Bowler He Faced

Cricketnext Staff | Updated: June 7, 2017, 12:40 PM IST

New Delhi: Star Indian batsman and former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said that Pakistani pacer Shoaib Akhtar was the toughest bowler that he had ever faced in his 13-year long career.

Dhoni has faced a battery of fast bowlers from around the world, but he rated the Pakistani fast bowler as the best ever, "All the fast bowlers are quite difficult, with the limited technique I had, it was very difficult to face the fast bowlers. Still, if I had to pick one, I would pick Shoaib Akhtar. Very simple reason, he was quick, he was fast, he could bowl a yorker, he could bowl a bouncer but you never expected a beamer, he was a bit unpredictable, he was fun to play against," said Dhoni.

He was speaking at the Virat Kohli charity dinner on Monday, which was attended by the whole Indian team.

Dhoni was also asked about the Duckworth-Lewis system, which is expected to play a big part in the tournament with rain interrupting many of the matches.

Indian wicketkeeper was at his witty best, when asked if he understands the D/L system or not,

"I don't think even ICC understands the D/L method," replied the Jharkhand batsman with a smile.

Dhoni was also earlier critical of the DRS system, saying "If you see the deviations in DRS, there are quite a few deviations. Even the makers agree that can happen. Now you have to also take into account whether it was given not out or out. If it was given out it needs to touch the stump [for the decision to remain out]; if it was not out it needs to hit half the stump [to be given out]. That itself makes the variable too big. In cricket every inch, every millimetre, matters."

"DRS should not be the umpires' decision justification system. It should be giving the right decision. Like in tennis you don't say the umpire called it out and half the ball has to pitch inside the line. It has to be plain and simple. You don't have to keep too many things in consideration. You either say, 'This is DRS, doesn't matter whether it is given out or not out, if half the ball is hitting the stumps, you are out.' Irrespective of the decision. Now, for example, you take DRS, in an lbw decision, what changes everything is whether it was given in favour or not. It can mean a margin of one inch overall, and that is very big." Dhoni had said.

Dhoni didn't bat against Pakistan, but he is likely to play a key role in India's Champions Trophy campaign with captain Virat Kohli relying on him to play the role of a finisher, and also be the guiding force for the lower middle-order. Dhoni hasn't been in the best of forms coming into the tournament but Kohli and the team think-tank retaining faith in him.

Tendulkar wouldn't accept though for obvious reasons! :srt

I know. SRT had to face the greatest quick bowler off all time in Mcgrath otherwise i am sure he would have chosen akhtar.... ohh wait maybe not..

Tendulkar's legs are still shaking so hard that his flapping tongue prevents him from commenting. :akhtar

I agree with you, that Tendulkar's legs were shaking against Akhtar doesn't mean he was the bowler who created most trubles for Tend.

McGrath was class, but not the bowler who d cause fear in the hearts of batsmen.

Akhtar did that, and shaking legs are a proof.

Considering the fact that Dhoni has blasted Shoaib around so much high compliments for Shoaib. Shoaib should be proud.

:)) Dhoni reminding everyone of the last-ditch tactic employed by lion-hearted Shoaib when Dhoni was plastering him all over the place in a test match.

Bullied Akhtar his entire career, and then rates him as the toughest. Well played Mahi. :troll

Shoaib was an infinitely tough bowler to face.

Yes injuries (due to several physical constraints) and PCB politics meant that he missed quite a few matches for Pakistan, yet he boasts off an exceptional career with the ball in hand. One of our modern greats

I like the part where he says his technique was limited , it's true but one of the reasons why he was so successful was cos knew his game so well . No bigger evidence to fact that any technical limitations can be overcome if you are mentally strong . Steven smith is another great example , though relatively hes less unconventional

Yeah Similar to Mcgrath complementing Mike Artherton, it only natural to compliment someone you have success against.

Dhoni did not face Akhtar in his prime though so I am surprised he stated he is the toughest bowler he faced.

Except Wasim and maybe Imran ,got to say Pakistani players have the smallest peaks.

Waqar,Shoaib,Razzak,Saqlain. It's like Pakistan awards for peaks than consistency.

Dhoni faced Akhtar when he was hitting 157 km/hr so that is close to prime that you can get. However that was an absolute graveyard pitch for fast bowlers, that was Asif's debut and he looked very ineffective but we all saw what Asif did once he got a pitch which supported him in the next test.

The video I posted earlier doesn't have the actual beamer. It had a full toss that I mistook for the beamer. Remembered it was more nasty. Here's the actual beamer, soon after where the previous clip ends. At 31s.

0:26 and 0:40 to 0:41 WTH ? How did he get away with his action ?

Funniest part about that beamer was that Dhoni was trying to whack it, imagine if it landed on his face, body at 156 km/hr

So basically Dhoni claims Akthar is the toughest bowler he faced but the Indian posters disagree :)) I guess they know Dhoni better than Dhoni knows himself.

Akhtar has dismissed Dhoni twice in ODI's and once in test cricket.

I don't remember him being much troubled by akhtar. In 2006 odi and test series, he got lot of runs against shoaib. Also in 2007 odi series, he was very good

Akhtar was fast bowling at 150+ clicks an hour is obviously difficult to face for any batsman.. Regardless of the success the player has against the bowler facing express quicks is always difficult..

Dhoni names toughest bowler he's faced

At a charity event hosted by current India captain Virat Kohli, India’s wicketkeeper MS Dhoni has revealed a surprising pick as the hardest bowler he’s ever faced. It is none another than former Pakistan quick Shoaib Akhtar.

"All the fast bowlers are quite difficult, with the limited technique I had, it was very difficult to face the fast bowlers,” Dhoni said.

“Still, if I had to pick one, I would pick Shoaib Akhtar.”

“Very simple reason: he was quick, he was fast, he could bowl a yorker, he could bowl a bouncer but you never expected a beamer. He was a bit unpredictable [but] he was fun to play against.”

Errr you couldnt have got it anymore wrong, Pakistani fans feel Akhtar was a tougher challenge to SRT than any other bowler on a Dhoni/AKhtar thread.. Lord,, Pakistani fans huh ? I know :))
