MS Dhoni retires from international cricket

Not many countries do something like a farewell match . He did deserve a better send off then his last match being a WC semi final defeat and not finding out till months later he is retiring.

Sachin got a farewell series. Kohli will also get it. These are big players and not some random lollypop cricketers like Pandya or Jadhav. I think he did the right thing by not retiring immediately after the World Cup because in that case everyone would have said 'see he was responsible for this loss that's why he retired' which was not the case. He trolled his haters for at least an year. :inti

It was wrong of BCCI to give farewell series to Sachin and hopefully they will not repeat it with any other player. You pick your best players to represent the country and once someone is done, you thank them for their services and move on to next generation. This is how sports should work. Sehwag, Gambhir, Yuvraj, Zak etc all were big players but giving farewell series to only Dhoni will send a wrong message. Knowing the personality of Dhoni, he couldnt care less about a farewell match anyway.

Also the reason Dhoni did not retire after world cup was not to troll his fans. That maybe your way of thinking but he is not that petty...lol. He wanted to play 2020 T20 WC but now that its not happening due to Covid, he dont want to drag his career any longer at the tender age of 39.

Great player for India. Unique attitude and style. Wonderful behind stumps and (at his peak) one of the best finishers in the world. Thanks for the many memorable moments you gave to Indian cricket fans, dear Captain Cool.

This day had to come right. :(

Can anyone find the original MSD thread from early 2000s? Need a post from DHONI183 too!

Legend ATG

The way he handled pressure and how he you used to pace his innings was on a different level arguably the best white black captain

The post is being prepared, sir. Give me time to assemble my thoughts in one post. I need time to accept this.

Happy 2nd innings, MS.

Must admit, I've been his critic ever since WC '15 as he had been badly past it.

However, today nothing of that sort. He has been huge for us and has had enormous impact on our cricket especially due to him coming from a non metro city and his obvious flamboyance.

His strokes were ugly but were highly effective.

Pity about us not being able to nurture his successor as yet. I don't have much faith in Pant's abilities.

Rohit we know today is due to MS giving him chance to open in ODIs or else he might have gone the same way as quite a few obviously talented cricketers go.

So we as Indian cricket fans, owe this to MS.

It seems you only watch IPL and don't follow international cricket. Dhoni didn't play any match after last year's World Cup. There was no way selectors would have selected him anyway for the World Cup. May be he wanted to retire on Independence Day this year?

Also IPL fans shouldn't be too emotional here regarding Dhoni. He hasn't retired from IPL yet. Save your rona dhona till he retires from IPL. You guys hardly care about International Cricket these days so this shouldn't be a big news for you. :inti

Yes Pant has been dissappointing so far. Not many keepers in domestic either...likes of Ishan Kishan etc are not that good. Our best bet is if KL Rahul improves his glove work and play as permanent keeper.

It won't be easy to find another MS Dhoni. Even Australia couldn"t find a wicket keeper batsman like Gilchrist again. These are once in a generation kind of players.

Once again we have to deal with keepers like Pant who are in the same category as Nayan Mongia, Sameer Dighe, Ajay Ratra, MSK Prasad or make shift keepers like KL Rahul who is actually outperforming a regular keeper batsman these days. :inti

Above everything else, his legacy to me will always remain the way he instilled the "team above individuals" culture in Indian cricket. The way he kicked out and marginalized non performing seniors immediately from the time he assumed captaincy signaled a monumental shift in the way Indian cricket would be run henceforth. I'm pretty sure he would have liked to put Tendulkar out of his misery in International Cricket as well but the hero-worshiping rot ran way too deep for that.

Don't think I can write anything about his batting and keeping other than what has already been mentioned in this thread.

Well MSD himself said that, he said he'll assess his performance in IPL then will decide his future.. Due to Covid everything is changed..

Admired his mental toughness and ability to win matches from almost impossible situations.

A fantastic cricketer.

He'll be tough to replace.

Where did he say that?

Dhoni himself didnt but both Ganguly & Ravi Shastri confirmed that they had chat with him regarding his future. Think it was an interview with India today where Shastri confirmed that MS is done with ODIs for sure and his return to T20 WC depends on his IPL performance. But since T20 WC is not happening this year...he retired from all formats.

Ishan Kishan is as dud as it gets. Not fit for international cricket.

Good to see Pakistani cricketers and fans giving respect to MS Dhoni. Not sure our cricketers and fans will be allowed to do that for Pakistani legend cricketers. :inti

Fair point. Dhoni deserved to end in a better way than this.

Mixed feelings today.

Sad because this is a revolutionary and a legend of Indian cricket retiring.

Bit angry at the way this whole retirement thing was mismanaged by him to a point it lost its relevance. What had he retired from? Was he even being considered for anything.

A player who was this BIG deserved a proper send off.

Exactly my thoughts. The first thing that came to my mind when I heard he retired is "wasn't he already retired?".

Not great the finishing stretch of his career and how his end has been handled nor the negativity from the fans but if we ignore all that he was revolutionary captain in the sense that if you forgot his outstanding keeping ability or dynamism down the order to win games from impossible positions, it was fascinating and enjoyable to watch him lead his team, especially the nail biters :salute

Read on fb thay india lost to nz at 19:29 thats why he took retirement at that time

Is this true?

He retired a bit late but better late than never.

He was a champion player and I wish him all the best.

Sachin got a farewell series.
Tendulkar deserved every bit of that farewell series.

What he has done for Indian cricket strictly as a cricketer, his impact on so many budding cricketers and the financial muscle he helped to add to it is the reason why even the domestic cricketers are earning what they are.

Weird! But knowing Dhoni I think he doesn't forget things in a hurry.

Then Dhoni did same if not more and hence deserves a farewell too.

In fact you can argue that the main beneficiary of Tendulkar's success was Tendulkar himself whereas for Dhoni it was India team as a whole.

As far as the financial muscle aspect is concerned I do not think you are right at all.

Firstly, Dhoni had overtaken Sachin from # of endorsements perspective in 2006 or so only. So he was definitely more marketable.

And secondly, and more importantly, BCCI became a financial behemoth due to the advent of the IPL (for better of for worse) and its success. IPL became a possibility and only a success due to India winning the inaugural 2007 T20 WC which Dhoni captained. Prior to that BCCI was not even interested in the format and had sent a team shorn off the best senior players into the event. Dhoni's style and captaincy had a lot to do in that win and if he hadn't led India to victory there; cricket may have been a very different game.

He's 28 man, not 18. What are you expecting? You expect him to improve his glove work to the level where he becomes a quality permanent keeper at this age? Unless he is already a top quality keeper (which begs the question as to why doesn't he already don the gloves?) it is unrealistic and frankly naive to expect someone to up their skill level of wicketkeeping at an age where they should already be at their prime.

For what it's worth his average his ODI batting record as keeper is very good.

Thank you MSD for all the memories.

this really is a cleansweep

No captain has got that.

Ricky Ponting never got the T20 WC tho I have feeling he wont trade that for his 3 WCs

Has Dhoni played the most number of official cricket matches after Tendulkar?

Never been a player in Indian team played so many roles. Once in a lifetime cricketer. Happy retirement.

Few young self destructive keepers can learn a thing or two from him.

He was such an all-round package.

Finishing skills + captaincy + keeping.

The way he led a young team throughout the WT20 2007 was fascinating.

Yes, 2011 WC will always be far more memorable but we had the team to win that and we were also favourites.

But the way he led a young team throughout that WT20 2007 back when we were rather considered unsuitable for the shorter format was phenomenal.

India's greatest LOI memories will always be between 2007-2011 phase when Yuvi and Dhoni form a formidable finishing pair for us.

Then Dhoni did same if not more and hence deserves a farewell too.
He did but only if retired at anywhere close to the right time. He was at least 4 years too late into his retirement. Besides there was no covid related uncertainty at Tendulkar's retirement time. I'm sure had times been normal, BCCI would've surely given Dhoni a farewell game at least.

In fact you can argue that the main beneficiary of Tendulkar's success was Tendulkar himself whereas for Dhoni it was India team as a whole.
lol, you probably don't know Indian cricket then.

I wasn't talking about one's individual finances being beefed up as a result of Tendulkar's exploits in '90s, rather Indian cricket as a whole.

You' may be right about the IPL and T20s but as I said earlier, '90s was when it all started, with Tendulkar as its premier catalyst. IPL though surely took it forward to the next level.

I repeat, the kind of stature Dhoni has had and the kind of impact he has had on Indian cricket, he did deserve a farewell game at the very least.

He is one of the most impactful Indian cricketers along with Tendulkar, Kapil & Sunny.

Has Dhoni played the most number of official cricket matches after Tendulkar?
No.

Here are the top-10,

Tendulkar: 664 games,
Jayawardene: 652 games,
Sanga: 594 games,
Jayasuriya: 586 games,
Ponting: 560 games,
Dhoni: 538 games,

When I say official matches I mean official of any form not just international. He played 300+ t20 matches with a lot of them IPL which is why he mai have a shout. For example a Ranji Match is official but usually a practise game on a foreign tour where subs are allowed is not official.

Winning ICC trophies is what we are missing these days badly. For some reaching finals or knockout stage is a good enough accomplishment these days. :inti

No thats not the case. Its just that not eough ICC trophies are happening these days. Since 2017 there have been only two ICC Tournaments. Compare that with Dhoni's time where we had ICC tournaments every year...in 2007 T20 WC,2009 WT20 ,2009 Champions trophy, 2010 WT20, 2011 Odi WC, 2012 WT20, 2013 Champions trophy, 2014 WT20, 2015 Odi WC, 2016 WT20. Since Kohli has got the captaincy of two formats only two ICC tournaments have happened. Its wrong to compare kohli's Indian team performance with Dhoni's as Dhoni's Team got 10 chances and they won 3 times.

Speaking of retirements, when will KKD Karthik announce his retirement? Or is he still hopeful? Knowing how Kohli functions as a team selector, he may have another outing in the Indian colors soon.

I don't have any idea about that reord.

However there is 1 record which Dhoni has, which is to have led India in a total of 332 matches across formats and holds the record for most matches as captain in International cricket.

Players and fans Sunday urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to retire MS Dhoni's number seven jersey in a tribute to the two-time World Cup winning captain. Dhoni, 39, called time on his over 15-year-old international career on Saturday with a cryptic message on his Instagram post that read "From 1929hrs consider me as retired". The BCCI confirmed the news in a statement, saying: "The boy from Ranchi, who made his ODI debut in 2004, changed the face of Indian cricket with his calm demeanour, sharp understanding of the game and astute leadership qualities."

Dhoni's legions of fans including 7.8 million Twitter followers and former teammate Dinesh Karthik said they did not want to see 7 on the back of any other Indian cricketer's jersey.

"I hope the bcci retire the #7 jersey in white ball cricket Good luck with your second innings in life , I'm sure you'll have a lot of surprises for us there too," Karthik, a wicketkeeper-batsman, tweeted.

Former batsman Mohammad Kaif agreed, writing on Twitter: "Can't imagine any one else wearing a Number 7 India jersey again."

There is no provision to retire jerseys in cricket, unlike in football.

But the BCCI unofficially retired batting great Sachin Tendulkar's number 10 shirt a few years after his retirement.

Dhoni, a flamboyant wicketkeeper-batsman who led India to win the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 and lifted the 50-over showpiece event in 2011, was born on July 7.

He is a self-confessed fan of Portuguese football megastar Cristiano Ronaldo, who also wears a famous number seven jersey.

Glittering career

bcci should retire "Jersey Number 7" as a Tribute to Legend MS Dhoni," a fan wrote on Twitter.

Another fan urged social media users to start trending "#RetireJersey7" as "Jersey number 7 was not just a number but an emotion the country is going to miss".

Dhoni, dubbed 'Captain Cool' because of his unflappable style, will continue to lead his team Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League starting in the United Arab Emirates next month.

Dhoni quit Tests in 2014 and has not played for the national side since India's World Cup semi-final loss against New Zealand in England last year -- his 350th one-day international.

Cricketers from across the globe paid tribute to the glittering career of Dhoni, who was fondly called 'Mahi' by his teammates.

"Welcome to the retirement club, MSD! What a magical career!," former England batsman Kevin Pietersen tweeted.

Australian opener David Warner wrote: "Congrats @msdhoni on a fantastic career, he is one of the coolest guys I've played against on the park."

"One of the true legends of Indian cricket and one of the greatest captains, congratulations on a great career MS Dhoni! All the best for your future," former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi added on social media.

Retiring jerseys of legendary players is such a cringe worthy thought.

ICC CONGRATULATES MS DHONI FOR A MARVELLOUS CAREER

The 39-year-old, who was captain of the teams that won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2007, the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2011 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013, has announced his retirement from international cricket.

Dhoni was an accomplished all-rounder with his smart work behind the stumps and with the bat and was known as one of the greatest finishers in limited overs cricket.

ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney: “MS Dhoni is one of the all-time greats of the game. The image of his winning shot at the Wankhede Stadium in the 2011 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final is etched in the memory of cricket lovers around the world. He has inspired a whole generation and will be sorely missed. On behalf of the ICC, I congratulate him for an outstanding cricket career and wish him all the best for the future.”

Dhoni scored 4,876 runs in 98 matches with 256 catches and 38 stumpings in a Test career that he called an end to in 2014. In ODIs, he scored 10,773 runs with 321 catches and 123 stumpings, last turning out for India in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. In T20Is, he aggregated 1617 runs with 57 catches and 34 stumpings. He scored six centuries in Tests and 10 in ODIs.

Dhoni spent 656 days as the top-ranked batsman in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings from 2006 to 2010 and was the ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009.

He was in the ICC ODI Teams of the Year in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 and in the ICC Test Teams of the Year in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. He won the ICC Spirit of Cricket award in 2011.

A captain with perhaps the most impressive CV in the cricketing world. His role as a wicketkeeper and finisher speaks for itself. India will surely find it hard to replace him. Ever.

Greatest limited overs captain and WK batsman from Asia. A truly inspirational and once in a lifetime cricketer.

Sorry don't agree. He was a great captain and one of the best cricketers ever but not the best WK batsman. He was not a better batsman than Sangakkara

India coach Ravi Shastri on Sunday praised former India captain MS Dhoni for his contributions to Indian cricket. Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on Saturday via an Instagram post. The right-handed wicketkeeper batsman was regarded as the most successful captain of India - having won the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy.

“This man is second to none. And coming from where he did he changed cricket for all times to come. And his beauty is he did it in all formats,” Ravi Shastri was quoted as saying by India Today.

“T-20- he has won a world cup and multiple IPL titles. 50 overs- he has won a world cup. Test cricket- he has taken India to the number one position in the world. Played 90 Test matches,” he added.

“And he always took life as it came. From his days in Kharagpur to his days as an Indian cricketer he was always in the moment. And in retirement also he has moved on. As I said he is second to none,” Shastri further added.

Shastri further went on to praise Dhoni for his “natural” wicketkeeping skills and said that his speed behind the stumps added to his aura.

“As a wicket keeper he was not a natural but was effective as hell. Look at the impact he had. For me what stood out was his stumpings and his run outs. He had such fast hands that he was at times faster than any pickpocket. The batsman wouldn’t even realise that Dhoni had taken the bails off and that’s something that added to his aura,” Shastri said.

“In any life of cricket’s greatest, not greats but the greatest, you have to include this man. As I said in my tweet I will always have fond memories of him,” Shastri added.

While fans may not see Dhoni play again in the Indian blue jersey, he will still don his yellow Chennai Super Kings jersey when the 13th edition of Indian Premier League season kicks off from September 19th. Dhoni has led CSK to three titles in the past, and even though the IPL will take place in UAE this year, Dhoni’s team will still enter as one of the favourites.

Sad day for cricket, when a great leaves memories and there is no more to be created.
Made India into winners, real winners.

Shame about the performance against England last world cup.
He was much better player and competitor than that.

Real great internationally, with fan base all round the world which he deserves.

Would have like to seen him, bowling a bit more too... I think he might have been ok in that regard too.

Excellent player, great leader and a great career. He is definitely in my all time ODI team.

He has a lot to offer players. But unfortunately, I don't think we will see him in any type of coaching capacity. Neither will we see him in the broadcasting booth.

Neither will pay him enough to make it worthwhile. He already has plenty of $$. My guess is he has made somewhere between $150-$200 million. The only way I seem him coming back into the fold is part owner of a team (IPL) with some kind of mentor/coaching involved.

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar on heaped praise on MS Dhoni and urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to give him a farewell match.

MS Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. He posted a message on his Instagram account, thanking everybody for their love and support throughout his career.

"Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout.from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired," Dhoni posted along with a 4-minute video montage which depicted his nternational journey from breaking into the national side, scripting records, playing memorable knocks, winning trophies and getting run out in his last match for India..

Not satisfied with how Dhoni bid adieu, Akhtar appealed to the Indian cricket board to organise "at least one final match" for the legendary captain, who changed the face of Indian cricket.

Akhtar also said that Dhoni might have continued till the T20 World Cup this year but the coronavirus pandemic forced the tournament to be postponed to 2022, which might have played a big part in the wicketkeeper-batsman opting to step aside.

"I was confident that MS Dhoni will get a good farewell but that is not what he wants. Playing for India was his biggest dream which he fulfilled.

"It's always a great time to leave when you want to, people shouldn't push you towards retirement. India loves and respects its cricket stars, I know because I have learned that from experience.

"There might be scenario that Dhoni gets a farewell match. BCCI might ask him to play one final time to give him a send-off whenever it is possible in the current scenario because such a big player like Dhoni doesn't deserve to go out with a small message on social media. I hope and India sends him off with a lot of respect and in times to come they use his experience in some way or the other.

"Whoever serves their country for 15-16 will have tons of knowledge and I hope the BCCI utilises that," Shoaib Akhtar said on his YouTube channel.

One of my favourite Indian cricketers ever. Farewell to the skipper and good luck in your second innings.

A brilliant ODI batsman, probably the the best ODI captain in history and a good keeper.

Test career was not close to what he did in ODI, but a good keeper-batsman in the test format.

Former India fast bowler Javagal Srinath heaped praise on M.S. Dhoni, who retired from international cricket on Saturday. Srinath described Dhoni as a ‘comprehensive captain’ and a ‘brilliant finisher’.

“Dhoni is one of the most successful captains India has ever produced. The one quality that stands out about Dhoni is his self-belief. Winning three trophies (2007 ICC World Twenty20, 2011 ICC ODI WC, and 2013 ICC Champions Trophy) is a great achievement. That’s the first thing to consider when you talk of his legacy. The unstoppable train of confidence that you see in the Indian team now - that was started by Dhoni. I want to thank Dhoni for his contribution to Indian cricket,” Srinath told Sportstar on Sunday.

Srinath recalled being awestruck by Dhoni’s powerful batting early in his career, in a triangular tournament involving India 'A', Pakistan 'A' and Kenya in Nairobi in 2004. Dhoni turned on the heat with scores of 70, 119 n.o. and 120. A few months after his exploits in Nairobi, Dhoni made his India debut, in an ODI match against Sri Lanka.

“I was in Nairobi as a commentator. It was the first time I saw Dhoni in action. He had immense potential, which he later realised in full. He was a cut above the rest in that tournament. He scored runs at will; winning matches single-handedly,” Srinath said.

Srinath stated Dhoni read the game well - a key aspect of captaincy. “He had a plan for each bowler, and the bowler knew what was expected of him. This makes life so much easier for bowlers. Dhoni was the best reader of the game. He could sense what the batsman was going to do. Accordingly, he would decide the field setting and whom to bowl. He was a comprehensive captain. With the bat, he controlled the game like a regulator. He was a brilliant finisher. In his era, Dhoni was the man you could count on to finish a game,” Srinath said

It’s pathetic how much attention and headlines has been focused on this guys retirement

You’d think the queen has died or something with this much media frenzy.

MS Dhoni on Saturday evening broke the silence on his future on international cricket by sharing a post on Instagram. The post was a four-minute long clip of Dhoni’s international career, and the caption read: “thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout. from 1929 hrs consider me as retired.”

Ex-Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq wished Dhoni the best but also said this was not the right way for a player like him to announce his retirement.

In a video released on his YouTube channel Inzamam ul Haq – The Match Winner, the former cricketer said, “Dhoni has millions of fan across the globe who want to see him play on the ground. In my opinion a player of such stature, shouldn’t have taken retirement while sitting at home. He should have announced retirement from the ground.”

Explaining his views, Inzaman recalled a conversation he had with Sachin during his playing days, when he had suggested that Sachin end his journey where it had begun.

“This is the same thing, I once told Sachin Tendulkar. When you have such a big fanfare, you should ideally end your journey from the ground, after all it is this ground where you earned such respect and stardom.”

“In my opinion, even Dhoni should have done the same then his fans would have been more happy, including me since I rate him as the best Indian skipper,” Inzamam said.

In his video, the former Pakistan great rated Dhoni as one of the most talented player the sport has had. He also credited the wicketkeeper-batsman for turning “players into great players.”

“MS Dhoni is such a clever cricketer that he knew how to built players. Suresh Raina and R Ashwin are two best players, MS Dhoni produced.”

“His level of understanding of the sport was so good that he used to pick players and then turn them into great players,” he said.

Inzamam also hailed Dhoni’s finishing abilities, saying it is this quality which made him a great player.

“He is that player who knew how to finish the match. He is not the kind who will score a century in every match, but he built his innings in such a manner that the team finishes on the winning side.”

“Single-handedly, he could win matches. For example the 2011 World Cup, he came to bat at the No 4 position reflected the amount of confidence he carried with himself,” the Pakistan great said.

They share a bond that is deep, strong and has withstood turbulent times.

"M.S. Dhoni is the greatest cricketer India has produced so far," said former ICC and BCCI chief N. Srinivasan, talking to Sportstar here on Monday.

"He has accomplished everything. He is a match-winning batsman, an outstanding ‘keeper, a brilliant captain, a sensational leader of men and an inspirational figure. And he has excelled in all formats and in all conditions.” said Mr. Srinivasan.

He added, "He is a destroyer of attacks and can still pull off lightning stumpings and continues to be super quick between wickets."

Srinivasan added, "And he has won for India, the ICC ODI World Cup, the World Twenty20, The Champions Trophy, and fetched India the mace for being the No. 1 Test side in the world. So as an all-round cricketer and a winner, he has no equal in Indian cricket."

Asked whether he was aware of Dhoni’s sudden decision to retire from international cricket on Saturday, Srinivasan replied, "That is between me and him."

Travelling back to Dhoni’s shock decision to quit as Test captain minutes after the Melbourne Test of 2014, Srinivasan said, "You know he had earlier wanted to retire from Tests and I said ‘no.’ And then he again wanted to retire from Tests soon after the Melbourne game and this time I didn’t stop him.”

The former BCCI chief revealed. "Dhoni said ‘Sir, just give me half an hour so that I can inform my team-mates. You see he was just listening to his body, given his workload in Tests."

Queried about Dhoni’s qualities, Srinivasan said, "He is simple, straight-forward, clear-headed, humble, loyal and someone who can lift the entire team around him."

Explaining their mutual relationship, Srinivasan said, "It is one of mutual respect. I gave him freedom, did not interfere in what he did. I just don’t have respect, I have a great deal of affection for Dhoni. For someone who has accomplished so much, he is so humble."

Srinivasan observed, "He made his men believe in themselves at all times. He led by personal example. The manner he finished games encompassed his spirit."

"He is still super fit. He will play on and on for CSK. His bond with the club, its fans and Chennai is unshakable."

Srinivasan concluded, "You know, Dhoni is a good man to ride the river with."

A very good player no doubt about it as well as a humble man. Together with Ganguly he changed the mentality of his side from a one lacking self belief to a cocky one. He did however age incredibly fast, his long brown hair turned short all white within a few years.

I guess now it is either politics or Bollywood for him. Would not advise him to go full time with his army seeing what is happening in IoK.

Will BCCI host a farewell match for MS Dhoni? Here's what board official said :inti

MS Dhoni's decision to retire from international cricket after remaining away from competitive cricket for over a year did not come as a surprise to many. However, the manner in which the former Indian captain decided to part ways with Team India was surprising. Dhoni announced his decision at 7:29 PM on August 15 with a post on Instagram.

Tributes have since been pouring in for the former Indian captain, who led the country to numerous memorable victories under his reign. Thousands of fans and several former cricketers are also requesting the BCCI for a farewell match for the India legend. BCCI is keen to host a farewell match for Dhoni and will plan about it during the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

A BCCI official recently confirmed that the board is looking to organise a farewell match for Dhoni after the conclusion of IPL 2020 which is all set to be staged in the UAE starting September 19. The final of IPL 200 will be played on November 10 following which the board can organise Dhoni's last game in an India jersey.

"There is no international series right now, maybe after IPL we will see what can be done because Dhoni has done a lot for the nation and he deserves all the respect. We always wanted to have a farewell match for him but Dhoni is a different player. He announced his retirement when nobody was thinking of it," a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by IANS.

The BCCI official further stated that the board has not yet spoken to Dhoni about a farewell game but they will organise a felicitation ceremony too for Dhoni, irrespective of his agreement. The official said it will be an honour for the BCCI to felicitate the 39-year-old for his contributions to Indian cricket and the legacy he has left behind.

"No, but surely we will speak to him during the IPL and that would be the right place to get his opinion about a match or series. Well, there will be a proper felicitation ceremony for him no matter if he agrees on it or not. That will be our honour to felicitate him," the official told IANS.

Earlier, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren had urged the BCCI to organise a farewell match for Dhoni in his hometown Ranchi. Dhoni led India in 332 international matches across formats and won almost everything there was to as the captain. 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy were some of his major achievements as captain. He also led India to number one position in Test rankings for the first time under his captaincy and won two Asia Cups to go with the three major ICC trophies.

You’d think the queen has died or something with this much media frenzy.

lol? literally no one outside England and australia care about the queen. who is the queen?

In saying that i agree msd has received far too much attention for his retirement which by the way should have happened in 2016. He played 4 years past his expiry date.

He is not a test legend but he is getting more appreciation that any cricketer bar Tendulkar.

When Rohit Sharma will retire, he will also get more appreciation than Cheteshwar Pujara.

This is why KL Rahul, the test batsmen decided to become KL Rahul, the LOI batsmen.

In India, world Cup winner is more appreciated and same is followed in Pakistan as well and can be seen by the praises of Pakistani cricketers on MSD.
