MULTAN SULTANS PCB tussle over Ali Tareen's remarks

The PCB last month sent a legal notice to Multan Sultans, demanding that our owner Ali Tareen:
•Retracts all recent critical statements
•Issues a public apology to the PSL management

The notice threatens termination of our franchise agreement and a lifetime blacklist of Mr. Tareen from owning any cricket team in the future.

Since taking over the Sultans, Ali Tareen has invested billions of rupees and personally carried losses of over PKR 7 billion, while building academies and creating opportunities for young cricketers across Pakistan.

Every statement he has made has been in the best interest of the PSL, urging the league to aim higher and do better.

For the PCB management to treat constructive criticism as a crime is outrageous. It demonstrates the pettiness of the current management and clearly shows that the PSL is not open to questions or accountability, even from those who have given the most to make it stronger.

Silencing honest feedback is not how great leagues are built.

His commitment to Pakistani cricket is unwavering, and his only goal is to help the PSL reach the level its players and fans deserve.

Multan Sultans statement

This is the MS response? You should clarify this as it misleads from the thread title.

The PCB were correct to send notice for Ali Tareen’s pathetic statements.

Ali Tareen doesn’t come across as a particularly mature individual. He’s trying to virtue signal and present himself as some contrarian who only wants what’s best for the league, when in reality he’s just upset about the money he has to pay to the PCB.

The problem is, nobody really cares, because his team is trash, and he’s a rich nepobaby whose corrupt father has long been embedded in Pakistan’s political economy.

He fails to grasp that the average Pakistani cricket fan doesn't give a damn if some privileged rich kid has to pay a few billion rupees extra.

I’m not saying the PCB is entirely in the right...I know the league’s economics don’t favor the owners as much as they should, but a) they knew that going in, b) that is true for all owners, not just Ali Tareen, and c) there’s a more mature and professional way to deal with this behind closed doors.

Ali Tareen, however, seems far more interested in scoring brownie points on social media.

The issue is not Ali Tareen criticizing the league, the issue is the manner in which he has been making fun of the PCB, PSL and leaking confidential details from meetings in public. No professional corporate organization tolerates this sort of behaviour and breaches.

The PCB is rightfully putting him in his place and telling him that if he doesn't like the PSL, he is welcome to leave, they will find another franchise owner

Ali Tareen speaking on his social media page:

“Our beloved PSL management has sent me a notice saying that if I don’t retract all the statements I’ve made and issue a public apology to the PSL management, they will cancel our Multan Sultans franchise agreement and blacklist me permanently from PSL—so I can never be part of it again.”

“This is exactly the problem: you don’t want to work with your stakeholders. You just want us to sit quietly and toe your line. You’re so used to control that you can’t tolerate even the slightest dissent. Till today, I haven’t received a single call, message, email, or invitation asking what my concerns are. No one said, “Come to the office, let’s sit together and address them, see what we can work out.” Instead, you went straight to issuing a legal notice.”

“If you had even a little decency, you’d know that things cannot be managed like this. And if you think threats like these will make me back down—no. I love this league. I love it more than you do, because this league belongs to our fans. It belongs to all of Pakistan. Not to the two-and-a-half people currently running it. It’s not yours. If you genuinely want to resolve these issues, then invite me. Let’s sit down over tea and biscuits, talk things through, and make decisions together. And since you’ve asked for a public apology—fine. I’m absolutely ready.”

“I apologize. I raised my voice. That’s my fault. My mistake is that I’m unhappy with your mediocre mindset. That’s my fault, not yours. And I’m unhappy that you give high-profile treatment to some people for doing very little, just because you feel like it. I apologize for that, too.”

“I know the management has qualified and competent people. I understand that’s a big thing, and maybe it’s impossible to expect more. I criticized the opening ceremony—yes, I did. My only request was that it start and end on time. Maybe I asked for too much. I shouldn’t have done that. I sincerely apologize. I’m sorry I was ten minutes late to a Zoom meeting. If that hurt you so much that you included it in a legal notice, I apologize from the heart.”

“I also apologize for saying this wouldn’t be the biggest PSL. I was completely wrong. You saw it—fans were lining up outside stadiums, every venue was packed, especially Karachi. You ran the tournament brilliantly. The logistics were outstanding. Your team players were in one hotel, support staff, masseurs, analysts, coaches in another—managing all that is something everyone should learn from.”

“Only six teams complained about training facilities—but that’s still six. And people watched it all on TV. So maybe you were right. This definitely was the biggest league. And that video—the one where the guy dived into the water and pulled out the trophy, then brought it back in a boat with four people standing around—that was a game-changer. I saw it. So again, I apologize for requesting the wrong things, and then I criticized them. I hope you like my apology video.”

Well, that’s that I think. End of the Tareen+Multan era

How Rashid Latif always comes out to defend anything related to Multan Sultans and Peshawar Zalmi?
I am no fan of Rashid Latif (he might or might not have a working relationship with Multan Sultans too) but he is right here....

It falls under the Ease of Doing Business in a country

If investors can be thrown out of the businesses for their political or (lets say) even sinister comments, it sends a bad message to foreign investors. Businesses in general are sperate entities from their owners. Go after the owner directly, don't target the business which in turn can affect cricket and general economies of the country.

It wasnt due to political comments. He was bashing the league and helping to destroy it's brand value.

Imagine you have 6 franchise mercedes dealerships and one of the six decides to bash mercedes as a brand, you think he will be allowed to continue?

His comments were unprofessional and went too far.

Even if he was bashing the league. he could have been banned from the league personally

That might or might not have triggered his pulling out his team on his own.

Right now, it looks like a commercial Fascism...which i ironic because the entire country is going through one or another type of Fascism

PS: could you please share his statement about PCB. Thanks in advance.

This could very well be an attempt by him to self-advertise, both domestically and Internationally

However, the PCB is making him look like a "Martyr of dissent"

Unless of course, it's all a "noora kushti" to make him popular.

Yes, it sounds conspiratorial but it has happened in the past, in many countries.

This could be a launching pad for him...

i agree with your comments on the analogy with the car and dealership thing, but that assumes the dealership operates within an open market in a functioning legal system where checks and balances can be ascertained.

the psl is a close ended racket, and its grossly mismanaged, a team owner has the right to publicly criticise the league if the league refuses to engage stakeholders, and if tareen is lying then the pcb should sue him to narnia with the burden of proof.

the point is the PSL has completly gone into freefall after sethi, what used to be the second or third best league is now an also ran, and its obvious local and internal interest has waned considerably. whilst i dont agree completely with what tareen has done, having been exposed to how unprofessional pakistanis can be in corporate environments, and given the nepotistic origins of naqvis ascent to the pcb throne, i fully back tareen.

pakistan cricket is in freefall, and if it takes someone to act unprofessionally to raise a voice against it, so be it.

Even Lahore Qalandars, Quetta Gladiators, Karachi Kings e.t.c have criticized the league, its management and how its falling behind other leagues but they have criticized the league professionally without indulging in mockery or revealing confidential details about meetings.

Ali Tareen was crossing the line and was publically mocking the PSL and making fun of the PCB, employees. Forget about his ownership and investment in Multan Sultans for a second, what was the justification behind his comments against Imad Wasim, David Warner, Ehsanullah and other players who have left Multan Sultans? Why is it that Multan Sultan's best performances in the PSL have come when his late uncle Alamgir Tareen was in charge of the Franchise and Multan Sultan's worst performances in the PSL have come when he himself has been in charge?

The PCB has rightfully had enough and they needed to send him a message that his rouge unprofessional behavior will no longer be tolerated without consequences.

The problem is that the other PSL Franchise owners are behaving professionally and are not raising as much noise against the PCB and the PSL Management and are not publically riddiculling the league on social media and revealing confidential conversations, meetings in public. Ali Tareen's behavior has been extremely unprofessional

Not enough. Needs to be exiled along with Misbah for the damage they've done to Pakistan cricket.
I can guarantee you that if you give Ali Tareen full authority and directorship of the PSL, he will make the tournament and it’s optics as cringe or as bland as his own franchise.

Remember, these guys rate Rizwan as a superstar over guys like Warner and Finn Allen.

This guy will never become an icon like Fawad Rana sab no matter how hard he tries.

Rana jee was carrying the PSL on his back first 4-5 seasons. Not once have you seen him cry and cuss anyone for his own failures. Everyone loved him and everyone misses him.

I hope he comes back and buys the Multan franchise once the PCB have booted out Tareen just like they booted out their captain Rizwan after 5 T20is.

They can offer it to him on a discount price knowing Rana Sab will draw them lots of money and sponsors. He can then take on his cousins who froze him out of Qalandars ownership by building a strong team

PCB is claiming plenty of interest from rich Pakistani Americans, Arabs and Businessmen in Faisalabad, Sialkot for upcoming PSL teams. It would be even better if we have interest from Foreigners with deep pockets who can afford to make gigantic investments in the franchise without worrying about immediate returns.

You can disagree with the way he has gone about it but anyone thinking PCB is on the right side of this is silly. PCB is one of the worst and poor run organizations that half hazardly do things last minute. The last few years, they have essentially gone out of their way to destroy the PSL with poor last minute planning, useless champions cup, lack of innovation or investment and its completely stalled the PSL.

Clearly Ali Tareen has run of patience and stop trying to do it the democratic way because it will never get done. You essentially have to yell and force PCB hand publicly for anything to get done. We have seen this in the past too like PCB not bothering to pay for Shaheen's medical bills until the issue was raised publicly and there was an outcry about it to force PCB hand to do the right thing. It's foolish to think the corrupt beaureaucrats at PCB care about anything but lining up their pockets.

Well, that’s that I think. End of the Tareen+Multan era

That was not an apology but slaps from left right and centre..LOL

When those cronies that run the country can’t tolerate any kind of criticism, why would their blue eyed boy Naqvi be okay with it? He’s a product of the same corrupt system.

This country has gone to the dogs and anything that’s associated with it too.

Those defending the PCB should be studied as perfect examples of humans suffering from stockholm syndrome.

Seen a photo where Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen ripped apart the legal notice sent by the PCB. Is this true? :kp

Wow what an apology. Ye to full exposed kar rha hai PCB and PSL ko :kp

I think its the right time for other franchise owners to support ali in this matter . At the end , he is talking about the betterment of whole psl not just for his team :kp

It's not like he's even being subtle about it. He actually mocked Warner live and praised Rizwan as if he's the 2nd coming of Sliced Bread.

Even the most hateful of individuals are atleast subtle about it.

Pcb acted like idiots as usual. They probably forgot that its easy to subdue players but not owners who have money and are educated.

If Tareen takes these idiots to court, PSL could either be delayed or the Multans franchise sale might get stalled and we may have a tournament being played with one less team.

The criticism on this thread on Ali is not really factual, just fanboyism on display....

Ali has said what we have been saying on these threads for a long time. After sethi you bought the second best league down to 6th or 7th. Every year you waste money by bringing in western stars to perform.

I heard these idiots were trying to waste millions just to bring Jennifer Lopez.

🤣🤣🤣. That's actually pretty funny 🤣🤣. Yaar what a country. Only PK can do this.

Why do you always side with Idiots May I ask? Your hero Misbah was managed by a guy who has been banned by the ECB.

I think you are clueless on the situation. The MS Franchise is no longer the part ownership of the Tareen group, the 10 year ownership contract has come to an end with all franchises. As of now, the PCB are complete owners of all franchises and will offer them to the the current owners as their first right to buy at the new prices.

They have enough grounds to reject this offer to the Tareen group due to Ali Tareen’s immature outbursts and unprofessional tweets that have brought harm to the PSL and PCB.

PCB holds all the cards here, not Ali Tareen.

not surprised that you support him, since you both are the same type of person.
Yes I'm straight forward. He said same things which most of the Pakistan poster were/ Are complaining from long time.

I know why agenda brigades have issues with Ali because of Rizwan connection with Multan Sultan.

:klopp :kp

Psl is adding two franchises, psl already can not attract good foreign players to PSL. Only guys who are emerging or the ones who have retired choose PSL and once the emerging guys get better and bigger contracts they do not come back to PSL.

What are you talking about? He is Jahangir Tareen's son, his dad is one of the cronies who benefits from this corrupt system and enables it...he's not some social justice warrior trying to do what's right

This Ali Tareen after failing miserably in politics now doing a child acts on twitter and media
He should stop all these nonsense, first of all if he cannot take loss then he would not have invested in the franchise.

Heard somewhere (unconfirmed) that in the legal notice issued by PCB, they also cited that Tareen offered his bowlers $1k every time they hit the batsman’s helmet.

Tareen hit back at one thing mentioned in the notice where the PCB were annoyed with him for being 10 minutes late to a zoom call.

I hope we get to see the entire legal notice and what the PCB have sighted, it seems like there are things which Tareen is hiding and will not look good for him in his defiance.

Here is part of the legal notice issued by the PCB, I think it’s missing a couple of pages.

I’m not sure why the journalist didn’t release all the pages of the page. From what I have seen….

I think the PCB have nailed Ali Tareen, especially by citing him being mute during official meetings. The PCB will have minutes or recordings of those meetings which are signed and approved by the attendees.

Also if you read the final part, it’s pretty clear that the PCB intend to terminate this partnership with Tareen group.

reread what i wrote. This case will go to court before the franchise can be sold off by PCB

Who should they have brought? You have an issue with them trying to bring a global superstar?
Jennifer Lopaz is 56+ and Pakistanis, especially the lower class that watches cricket have no idea who she is.

Jennifer Lopaz is 56+ and Pakistanis, especially the lower class that watches cricket have no idea who she is.
She has a few characteristics that would have captivated Pakistani fans, including those from the lower classes.

This is funny

Who would you bring in? Let’s hear it.
this isnt a playing 11 squad where you have to defend PCB and need to bring in a person as replacement.

The PSL relies heavily on marketing and branding, not just on the cricket alone. Thus, to make the league's brand value to increase they need to create hype and present the product in a way that it generates more views.

One of the biggest money wasting things that PCB has been doing is hosting a poor opening ceremony which always delays the first game. They bring in guys like Sean Paul, Jennifer Lopaz etc, who no one really cares about in Pakistan. Turns out, its the PCB officials that are more interested in meeting with these people and thus they use money to fund these stupid campaigns.

The biggest reason for PSL losing its value is because the country had decided ban twitter in the country. Twitter engagement and memes was one of the reasons that kept PSL being the talk of the town every time it took place. Mohsin Naqvi becomes directly responsible for this because as the interior Minister such decisions go through him.

I know for you this is basically the Rizwan franchise vs PCB.

But this is a much bigger issue than fanboyism. The current PCB with its interior minister has made stupid decisions in the country that has affected the PSL aswell.

Its not even the PSL, this includes the Pakistan team and the icc tournaments it loses and the way money is being wasted.

The Gaddafi stadium rennovation fiasco is one example where Naqvi messed up, than Karachi Stadium had no renovation done and the budget they had for Sialkot Stadium or Pindi Stadium got eaten up. The 5-6 captains changed since 2023 and the fact that any player mentions Imran Khan gets dropped has shown how crazy Naqvi has gotten.

Destroying Pakistan cricket is one thing, but to destroy the brand value of PSL with new leagues popping up is a dangerous level of incompetence.

Javed Afridi has often spoken about the stupidity that PCB involves itself with when it comes to PSL, and I am glad Ali Tareen went a step further. Tareen is right that when you reflect back to 10 years ago, where does your league actually stand? I living in the country know how crazy the fan following for PSL was in 2016 and how dead it is in 2025.

The price of the new franchises will depend on three things, revaluation of the currency, inflation adjustment and the brand value and its potential against todays brand value. The Two new franchises will be sold for less money because of hwat Naqvi has done in the last few years

She has a few characteristics that would have captivated Pakistani fans, including those from the lower classes.
its useless money being thrown. No one watches those shows.

Even if they bring in Arjit Singh, the opening ceremony always looks like a mela that you see in a Pakistani villiage. Only thing missing is the Mout ka Qua where they have a preshow mujra from trans taking place.

i agree with your comments on the analogy with the car and dealership thing, but that assumes the dealership operates within an open market in a functioning legal system where checks and balances can be ascertained.

the psl is a close ended racket, and its grossly mismanaged, a team owner has the right to publicly criticise the league if the league refuses to engage stakeholders, and if tareen is lying then the pcb should sue him to narnia with the burden of proof.

the point is the PSL has completly gone into freefall after sethi, what used to be the second or third best league is now an also ran, and its obvious local and internal interest has waned considerably. whilst i dont agree completely with what tareen has done, having been exposed to how unprofessional pakistanis can be in corporate environments, and given the nepotistic origins of naqvis ascent to the pcb throne, i fully back tareen.

pakistan cricket is in freefall, and if it takes someone to act unprofessionally to raise a voice against it, so be it.

I don't think he was acting to raise a voice against Pakistan crickets freefall. He hasn't said anything of substance, it seemed more like frustrated comments from a nepo baby getting tired of his latest toy.

PCB has it's hands tied with the PSL. There are multiple factors that they cannot control, or find difficult to control. Tareen has to find a way to operate his business within those areas.

PSL alongside BBL is the only franchise league that exists without Indian money. Every other one has sold to the Indians.

PCB has not done a dream job but within the constraints - cricket mainly makes money from Indians and we are blacklisted by it, internal security concerns that prohibit home and away, low purchasing power of Pakistani fans, competition with leagues fakely propped up on Indian cash, it has done reasonably well.

At some point the franchises need to step up and stop blaming the board. How many of them have spent money or developed their teams? Karachi is a shambles, Quetta is shockingly bad. No players developed.

Multan after grabbing the low hanging fruits - female coach, take players to Qawali, have done nothing either. Stale selections and stale tactics is all that is offered.

That made me laugh out loud

What are you talking about? He is Jahangir Tareen's son, his dad is one of the cronies who benefits from this corrupt system and enables it...he's not some social justice warrior trying to do what's right

Him being the son of an influential person is completely irrelevant. Even in the influentials in this country have no right to criticize those running the country - I am sure you are aware of that.

Naqvi has adopted the same policy within the PCB - you have examples like Fakhar's case who was kept out from the team because of one tweet (we all know that punishment was way more than what was deserved). Naqvi operates just like his masters.

Was A Tareen has been saying is nothing egregious. All over the world, team owners can voice their dissatisfaction with the board. No need to for the board to act like a school principal.

Also, "10 min late for a Zoom meeting"? Tells you the substance of this legal notice. lol

There are ways to go about things. Tareen has gone about it the complete wrong way. Constructive criticism is welcome but he is turning it into a drama show. Boy who cried wolf comes to mind.

reread what i wrote. This case will go to court before the franchise can be sold off by PCB

Courts? You do realize that the judicial system in Pakistan is owned by the establishment and that Naqvi has the full fledged backing of the all powerful master in Pakistan.

Do you really think Ali Tareen has any chance in this battle? I am pretty sure his daddy will have a word with him and knock some real sense into him to back off and not fight a battle he cannot win.

Even if it is taken to a court outside of Pakistan,

Ali Tareen is toast. He has a really poor case against the PCB

No professional sports organization in the world would tolerate a team owner making these kinds of comments about the league publicly. Every major league has clearly defined channels to resolve disputes, none of which include going on social media and ranting like an immature child. For example, in 2020, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was fined over US$500,000 for publicly criticizing NBA officiating and league practices. That’s the NBA btw - one of the biggest, most powerful sports leagues in the world, and even there, owners don’t get a free pass to undermine the product in public.

You claim that Ali Tareen’s family background is irrelevant, yet you cite Fakhar’s situation as if that has any bearing on this discussion. That’s pure whataboutery. My point wasn’t that his family ties define the argument, but that it’s hard to take someone’s so-called crusade against a corrupt system seriously when they themselves have directly benefited from corruption.

The problem with Pakistanis is that they want the PSL to be a world-class league, but the actions and behavior of the people involved are bush league at best. People like Ali Tareen want prestige and the leverage, but none of the professionalism or responsibility that comes with their position of power.

Ali Tareen knew what he was doing too. He started this hate campaign against the PCB in his final year of the agreement. He didn’t ever speak out like this in the previous years.

Naqvi vs Tareen = izzat ka mamla type thing

Talk about bad timing - this came out today

Although money isn’t really an issue for these parties. But I think the best outcome for Ali Tareen here is the PCB simply terminating his agreement.

If this matter escalates to the point where the PCB start to demand any losses they feel they have incurred because of Tareen’s defamatory statements, as in the valuation of the PSL, the MS Franchise and other Franchises….then it could become a very painful matter for the Tareen Group who have already lost a lot due to PSL Franchise ownership.

Good luck to the PCB on finding another nepo billionaire who is willing to pay 3 times more than what the other owners are paying.

A certain someone talked about a year back how a few franchise owners would degrade PSL to try to bring its value down so they can potentially get their teams back for cheap

PCB is very confident and is boasting about the competition among buyers for new teams. Naqvi has held meetings with high net worth Pakistani Americans and not to mention interest from Pakistani's with deep pockets in the Arab states and Europe. Do you really think the PCB would kick Ali Tareen out if they didn't have backups in place?

Yeah well, best of luck getting your franchise back at all now.

I don’t think he tore up the legal notice in his apology video, I think he tore up his partnership with the PCB forever.

Pak army deserves a team in the PSL.

No, the PCB fully intend to cut him off.

Salman Naseer latest interview regarding the PSL. He is being interviewed by the General Manager Hijab Zahid i.e. his subordinate. Why not bring in a tough neutral sports reporter who will ask independent questions to do the interview?

Hijab Zahid was also the director at Multan Sultans

Your not as smart as you think you are mate.

I think Ali Tareen does not care about owning a PSL anymore. He wants an exit so he is going to do it in his style.
