Multan, 17 October, 2023: Catherine Dalton has been appointed as the new Fast Bowling Coach for Multan Sultans ahead of the 9th iteration of the Pakistan Super League. She becomes the first woman to hold a coaching position in a top-level men's side.

The former Ireland international player is an England Cricket Board (ECB) certified Level 3 Advanced Coach, who has previously held coaching positions in the National Fast Bowling Academy in the UK, the Rajasthan Cricket Association, and the Ultimate Pace Foundation in India.

Currently working with Multan Sultans’ youth academy in Lodhran, Dalton is bringing years of fast bowling coaching experience to the senior men’s team.

Speaking about her appointment, Catherine Dalton said “I am excited about this on multiple levels.

The opportunity to work with such talented players is fantastic, I will be re-engaging with many I have worked with before.

Above this though, is the fact that as a female taking a major role in a men’s T20 franchise, the news is ground-breaking. And to be the first female fast bowling coach in men’s cricket is very humbling. In the 9 years since the PSL started, it has grown in both stature and size. I firmly believe the PSL has the best local fast bowling attacks in it compared to any other leagues, and the standard of cricket being played is fantastic”

Multan Sultans CEO, Ali Khan Tareen added that, “Catherine’s work for Multan Sultans’ youth academies speaks for itself, we’re all looking forward to her bringing those skills to the main team. In this process, we also want to establish new role models for young girls, those who succeed not only on the pitch as athletes, but also in the boardroom as leaders, and in the academies as coaches.”

Multan Sultans General Manager, Hijab Zahid added, “Catherine is an exceptional coach who has a proven track record of nurturing fast bowling talent across the world. Her inclusion to the coaching staff not only elevates the squad but also establishes an important milestone in inclusion and equity for Pakistan cricket as a whole. We welcome her to the Sultans family”

Catherine Dalton joins Abdul Rehman in the new coaching set-up as the squad gears up for the new season.

Expect Rizwan to leave next season. I would too.

If our fast bowling wasn’t bad enough. 🤦‍♂️

The Tareens are horrible owners. They have betting companies on jerseys and a now female bowler coach.
what a weird post.

SO you are just judging the gender of the person and not her coaching credential. She is not a new hiring, she has been working with the youth academies of Multan Sultan and got a promotion.

The Australian and NZ side have female staff in their male set up, but for some reason we have really weird views here in Pakistan about women involved in cricket.

I’m not judging her gender. But I am worried about players. She may be a good coach in England. But with our adult players, it’s difficult to say.

Ihsanullah, Shahnawaz Dahani, Abbas Afridi are all from conservative backgrounds. They are all villagers. It is highly insensitive to make them work with a young female in athletic sports. They will feel uncomfortable.

what is that suppose to mean?
No its not insensitive, these guys are adults. Dahani interacts with people quite well.

Err. Many of your bowlers have already worked with her - Arshad Iqbal, Sameen Gul etc. - to improve their actions.

Initially I saw the Cricinfo headline and thought is this another of those box ticking exercises ?

However I'm actually impressed by her credentials. ECB Level 3 Advanced certificate, worked as assistant head at UK National Fast Bowling Academy, and at the Pace Foundation in India. She's been alongside the top fast bowling coaches in the world.

She's already worked with Multan Sultans and some of the boys before, so it's a merited appointment.

How do you know he does? Are you texting him?
How about the other two?

Those aren’t the main bowlers of the Sultans. They’re bench warmers.
She's already worked with more I think. You said many will be uncomfortable since they come from conservative backgrounds . That's not the case at all

Irresponsible comment.

As a Rizwan fan, you should know that he doesn’t look at females. What do you say about MS hiring a female WK coach? You think Rizwan should hang his boots and retire?
Rizwan has practised keeping with one of england female keepers.

again, you are just making stuff up around here as usual, without knowing things

Cos our people can't behave around females. This is asking for trouble.

Whatever next.

I can even understand a female head coach or strategist, but bowling coach - I mean seriously.
Agreed. Sensitive liberals will say this is sexist but if you take those tinted glasses off you'd see that this isn't ideal.

Alex Hartley, the former England spinner, is to be appointed as a specialist spin bowling coach by Multan Sultans, the Pakistan Super League team – a role that could involve working with Adil Rashid. Hartley, a World Cup winner in 2017, will become one of the first women to work in a coaching role in the professional men’s game
