It's just a form of head covering. Mainly subcontinent Muslims do it.

I might be wrong but are there other nationalities who take out a handkerchief and tie it on their head when entering a Mosque apart from Indian/Pakistanees?

It seems like a subcontinental thing. I don't see any other group doing it.

I personally offer salah without any head gear.

It seems to be a very specific custom to the Subcontinent...

Every nationality has different headgear even back during the times of the sahaba. So that’s all it really is.

I think back in the days, uncovered hair were considered disrespectful in subcontinent akin to not dressing appropriately for the occasion now a days. So people in subcontinent covered their head as a gesture of humility and respect towards the sacred place or elders. If you look at old photos, Turban was not exclusively worn by Sikhs. I believe for same reason a bahu always used to wear a dupatta in front of father in law.

OTOH in the Early Modern England, a man was expected to remove his hat to his "superiors" i.e. clergymen, nobility, etc. That's why we say I take my hat off for you.
