Here are my laver’s:

Originally I had ordered a Reserve + Legend with the view to use one as a game bat and one as a net bat. I got them and straight away I knew that the Legend was too heavy as it felt that way and felt particularly bottom heavy. The Reserve was much better, but it also felt bottom heavy (It also weighed close to 1oz more than I wanted, but that is nothing). Both also had next to no concaving, when I had been after it but probably didn't communicate that with them. I emailed Andy straight away with my concerns and he got back to me promptly saying that they were 100% committed to getting it right for me, and offered me 2 replacements at no extra charge (had to pay postage back to them though, which was totally fine by me). They were held up getting back to them for some reason, but they got them and then started on my new ones. I changed my order to a Private Bin + SR Ultra as I knew I wouldn't use the net bat and I finally got the replacements on Tuesday. The replacements are much better, right shape and they pick up sooooo much better, which I think is due to the concaving/scalloping as there is a fair bit of it. They are supposed to be 2'7 and 2'8, but on my scales (which are already 0.5oz on the heavy side, and probably more) they were 2'9 and 2'10, which is probably 2’8 and 2’9 on properly calibrated scales, which mine aren’t. So only around 1oz - 1.5 oz's heavier than I wanted, which is nothing and I will get used to it just fine.

The SR Ultra picks up especially well for how big it is (42mm edges )and I've shown all the blokes at the club and they were blown away by how good it felt for the size, but it is probably a bit too heavy for me and I won't use it after going pretty good with my first use of the PB in a game today, so I will probably sell it/trade it. The PB is great, feels fantastic off the middle and will only get better once it opens up.

I used the PB today (continuing from my 8n.o from last week) and ended up on 55 off 50 balls with 11 fours. Pitch was a bit slow and holding up so I was always a bit early, so this meant I didn't really go after any of the drives and I barely tapped the ball (combined with a quick outfield) and the ball would go, not to mention the couple I actually got out of the middle which felt great and flew off the bat. So I am very happy with it. I’m still getting used to the weight and how it feels (old bat weighed like 2’6, lol), but a very good start. This is also contributing to me wanting to sell the SR Ultra., which was supposed to be my slog bat, but don't really think I need it tbh.

Overall I am very happy. They weren’t right first up, but they corrected it and they are great now, plus the customer service was fantastic, so I am very pleased.

They both have a fair bit of concaving/scalloping, which means the ball will fly off the middle, but won't go or feel as good for shots that I hit slightly off centre, but that's all good for me.

PB: 2lb8.5oz's - Slightly Higher middle with 34mm edges
SR: 2lb9.5oz's - Slightly Higher middle with 42mm edges

Thanks for posting this review mate, I appreciate it!

One thing I really like about James and Andy is that they always want to see there customers 100% satisfied, I have dealt with them and this was certainly there.

Your Private Bin looks absolutely a peach, looks lovely! I'm happy that you are liking it.

SR Ultra, seems like you used it for a ball or two, how did it respond when you played with it? Also is it bottom heavy or what?

Have you ever thought of adding a counter balance?

Exactly, I didn't know what they would say, but they were extremely positive straight away.

It is indeed, and the thing is that I'm not even fully use to it yet, in terms of weight and the new middle. I can't wait for it to open up.

I used it for 10 minutes with a ball in a stocking in the backyard, and exactly 6 balls with someone throwing me some (before I changed back to the PB as that's what I was going to use for the weekend), which isn't realy netting/training, but when I middled them they felt bloody good. It isn't bottom heavy at all, and it probably picks up a smidge better than the PB, but it swings through heavier as it is 1oz heavier, so not to my liking yet. I am really surprised at how well it feels, and so is everyone I have shown at my club, with most believing it weighed 2'8 and a few even said 2'7. One bloke said he would seriosuly buy it off me if the middle was lower as he hits them fairly low, which is just my luck, lol. Although on my 3rd ball I faced when I was still on 8, the ball went between bat and pad from the leftie and brushed the off stump and I thought I had been bowled but I turned around and the bail was still on, so I was relieved, but when the ball hit, it created that loud snicking noise and they appealed, but the umpire said no, but I don't think he heard it as my partner said he didn't hear it. So lucky on two occasions there :D

It doesn't need the counterweight, just the overall weight isn't too my liking just yet.

I had intended to use the SR Ultra as my slog bat, but because the PB went well today and in the 2 net sessions I have used it, and because I don't like to change it up, I won't use the Ultra and I don't see the point in keeping it. It's a shame as it is a lovely bat and it is insane and how well it picks up and no matter how I describe it, you would still be shocked at how well it feels in the hands, but I have settled on the PB and won't/don't see the point in changing between the 2, especially after I hit them alright today. I would use it if I came in with one over to go in the one dayers or 20-20's and needed to have a dash, but there is no point in keeping a bat just for that occassion which rarely happens, and will only mean I have to sell the bat as used, rather than virtually new.

The PB is more than capable for the late innings dash (if needed) and the few that I have middled have come off the bat like a rocket. I hit one just just above the very bottom of toe today that almost went for 6, then proceded to almost not make over the boundry for 4, but it trickled over in the end, lol

You make a good point in opening a bat up, I am not sure how long season goes in Australia and how much cricket you guys play but for us in Canada if you play for one team I don't think one has enough time during season to open the bat up because opening a bat would take longer compared to how much batsman will play.

I don't know but SR Ultra looks and sound to be like Amplus, my Amplus picks up well for its weight and size but when I swing it around as you said it feels slightly heavy although it has counter balance too.

I am actually quite impressed with SR Ultra, first saw Canners and now your, both look peach!

I have been victim of this (so if you call me hypocrite over this then I can probably admit it LOL :)) ) but I believe one should sticker with one or two bats throughout the season because changing the bats after every game means you are not getting yourself used to a bat, if one uses a bat for a long period then he will know inside out of the bat and he would play much better than changing the bat after every game. So I agree with you that stick with PB throughout the season.

However, once Laver fully open they do perform well one of my team mate was hitting effortless strokes with it, I won't say that a defensive push went for four/six because that is a bit exaggerating in my opinion LOL

Did you go for round handle?

So far I have had 4 innings and missed 1 because of rain. I Still have - 4 one dayers, 4 T-20's, 4 two day games to come, so that's at least 12 and then I may bat twice in some of the two day games, and then there are extra games I may play for finals, so I would say anywhere from 12-20 innings to come (20 if I bat twice in every 2 day game, including the 4 day grand final which is Sat-Sun over 2 weekends, so 2 innings are almost guarenteed there if we make it). So that may not look like many, but because of the training I do around 2-3 times per week), it should open up pretty quickly.

The Amplus has a more conventional shape, but they have a minimum weight of like 2'10 or 2'12, so I could never use that (I'm solid, but don't like heavy bats). If I could use them, I would probably buy one as I quite like the shape.

I've got a nice one for you here CD, ;-)

Whaaaat, of course you only use one bat, what would make you think that I thought otherwise, :p haha. Exactly, if you change all the time, your timing will be off as you aren't getting used to how one bat picks-up and how it feels when you hit the bat. I look forward to using from now on.

Getting me excited CD, haha.

They are semi-oval handles, so they are slightly more round than a standard oval handle and they don't have that drop off in the middle of the handle and are pretty much the same size throughout. The Ultra handle isn't as oval as the PB, and it is also a bit thinner in comparison.

Ah okay so you have fair amount of games really I'd say. Plus trainings are good enough to make a bat open up so I agree with you bat will open.

If I'm correct isn't weather good there all year? I think someone from Australia once told me that they play whole year but they don't play competitive cricket like you maybe he was talking about indoors get together etc not too sure.

I agree with you on Amplus - Amplus do have less concaving compared to SR Ultra. I do agree with you on weight, the one I have comes to 2.14 with two drips, counter balance, scuff sheet and toe guard. So I'm assuming it will be down to 2.8ish or somewhere around that naked.

Haha :)) - I have been victim of changing bats very often but I have decided I will be sticking to one bat for now :).

Haha LOL mate I get excited seeing bats ;-)

Ah okay, I like that triangle-oval shape handle because it is 'V' type of handle from bottom and it fits well between thumb and index finger of bottom handle.

Did you go for Carbo handle in any bat?

It is usally pretty good, but last year we had a lot of rain in QLD, and wide spread flooding. Our club had the water come right up to the wicket block, but it stoped just before reaching it, so that was good as it costs around AUD$50,000 for a wicket block apparently. All we had was half the field was lush and green, and the other half was brown/black from the water and mud, lol. But by this time last year I think I had already missed 3 games, so this year has been how it usually is. I do play competitively, in the QLD Premier Grade Competition, which is the top competition in the state, so always very competitive. I'm not 1st grade or anything though, which is where the state players play when they aren't playing for the state or Australia. Mainly around 3's-5's depending on how I'm travelling.

I take it that you will be sticking to the SCAT? Your's looks lovely and I hope it goes good for you. Think I will get another one made someday.

Haha, me too, it's lucky I can't buy more otherwise I would never know which one to use and would want to use them all, haha.

I've had that before, but didn't like how it felt, but I like the semi-oval that the bats have.

No Carbo handle and no lami-toe. Had the Carbo on my SS Gladiator that I had re-handled, but didn't like it. James and Andy said that the lami-toe is good if you jam down on yorkers alot, or if you tap the bat at the crease hard, which I do neither of, so I didn't get it.

Yeah I remember last year there were heavy floodings in Queensland and I hope everything is better now hopefully.

Ah okay so that is quite good level and I believe you play on turf pitches correct?

Yeah it will be Screaming Cat and Laver&Wood 'Pro' these two will be in my match bag really. However, before anything I need to oil my bats :)).

How did your Screaming Cat die really? Did it break or what? You had a bybrid shape one correct?

Haha :)) but I guess in a way it is good that you can stick to what you have, if you buy too much you will end up being in a dilemma.

One my first Reserve I have that 'v' shape handle and I like it but I will be selling that bat as there is a interested person in it.

I have Carbo handle and lamitoe on my net bat and I got lamitoe because of balls used in nets and more importantly I wanted to try it out and see what it is really. Samething with carbo handle, I didn't want to try lamitoe and carbo handle in my match bats because if I don't like it then it will be waste. However, I must say that the jerk/shock you get with carbo handle is quite insane lol and its something I never experienced before.

Wow great bats, very beautiful ... I like more SR.

If you don't mind telling, how much they cost?

Holy Laver & Wood is on rampage on this forum hehe

Your Private Bin looks very nice Mr. Langer, to me it looks better than Special Reserve Ultra not sure why. I am not trying to say that your SR Ultra is not good, it is but to me PB looks better.

Did you knock the bats when you got them or they were pre-knocked?

Yeah this has become a POSH forum mate; only Screaming Cats and LW PBs and signatures lurking at every corner.

I have a question: doesn't a concave spine reduce the middle and increase the edge ping?

Concaving does reduce the sweetspot length whereas the width is increased as well as edge size.

So concaving restricts the sweetspot.

POSH? I am relatively new here, so don’t know much of history on PP who has what ... but I personally would buy 1 great bat than 3 good bats, so end of the day cost wise you are more or less spending the same

Given the opportunity I'd rather have three bats, but then I also want a Fender Telecaster.

Good point KashifJ; it comes down to again the individual requirement. My statement pertained to the fact that for some of us plebeians forums like these are windows to equipment which might be difficult to obtain for various reasons. But reviews and photos like these or your own SC or CD's amazing collection are inspiring in a lot of ways. Don't take the word 'posh' in a wrong way mate :)----it was steeped in admiration and admiration only !

No mate I didn’t take the term in any wrong way at all :) ... as I said, it’s purely my personal choice to get 1 good bat vs many. I care for my equipment a lot ... but I won't hesitate at all or waste any opportunity to use my best bat; end of the day this is the reason I got it :)

The ultra I got great balance and picks up better than the signatures which is weird as the ultras look bottom heavy. The ultra and amplus are not similar in shape, you will be surprised how unusual the ultra is close up

My Ultra is the same, it picks up better than my PB does, but my Ultra is an ounce heavier than the PB, so I can't use it (forearms get sore after a few minutes of ghost batting) and will probably sell it on. PB is right near my weight limit, so the Ultra is just over it.

Deffinately not close on shape, Amplus is a conventional big shape, whereas the Ultra has a lot of wood taken out of the back.

Thank you, they are very nice indeed.

I paid a total of AUD$800 for both bats, knocked in and delivered to me. That price may shock some of you, but seeing as the well known manufacturers over here charge $650 - $800 for one bat that isn't knocked in, it was an easy choice.

Holy Laver & Wood is on rampage on this forum hehe

Thank you, I also like the shape of the PB more. The Ultra has more wood taken out of the back of it, but that is so they can keep the weight down and still make it massive. They are both great bats.

The bat's were knocked in by them and were fully match ready when I got them, so that was a nice touch.

So you are saying pickup on Signature is not as good as big Ultra?

Sorry didn't see this post. My ultra has. An inch shorter blade, inch longer handle. Picks up really well. Not sure if im holding it in a different position because of this. Langer has also said his picks up remarkably well, even if it's too heavy for him

Rob mate do you hold the bat all the way down the handle or inch or two above shoulder?

Even my Amplus which is heavy but picks up brilliantly well

Yeah my Ultra picks up incredibly well. It picks up better than my PB and it is close to my (now old) GN which is 2lb7oz's, so the pickup is crazy good. Only problem is that when I swing through I can feel the weight and it is too heavy for me.

I may be sending them back so James he can try and take weight off, but if he can't then Andy said they will start again, which is very nice of them. However, I don't really want to be without my bats for a few weeks, plus I'm being a bit of a pain as they have already replaced them once, so not sure. Will probably end up sending them back so James can try to take some weight off though.

I have still only used the PB 3 times (2 nets and 1 game which I hit 55) as I didn't get to train last week, plus we chased down their total in quick time and only 2 down today, so I didn't need to bat (I bat 5-6 now, after being an opener, but I like where I am). The weight isn't too bad and I could use the weight as it is only 2lb9oz's, however they are both heavier than asked, but in saying that I don't want to send them away or be a pain, so that's where my dilema is.

I was thinking about selling the Ultra and using the money to buy an almost new Slaz Masterclass off a mate for $250 ($725 new) as it is too light for him and he just wants to move it on.

What do you guys think?

Make sense, but I must add here that both Andy and James service is quite amazing, they offer replacement bats as it cost peanuts really! :14:

Anyways, I wasn't too sure of Slaz Masterclass as it is Australian Slazenger so I Googled it and man that bat looks amazing! From stickers to profile all looks brilliant!

If you ask me I would say go for it right away mate, Slaz Masterclass will feel good in your hands (I am assuming it is lighter than Ultra) so definitely mate go for it! And more importantly for that price you certainly can't go wrong!

And if you don't like Slaz Masterclass then you know where I am ;-) :p

Here is Slaz Masterclass for those who want to see;

Slazenger Masterclass look class act MR. Langer.

As Mr. Cover Drive said go for it fella.

Can you post pictures in advance of it so we can make better decision?

His is too light, yours is too heavy. Why not swap the ultra for the slazenger?

Just checked, As per usual Uzair, left hand on, right after. No change at all. Saying that when I had my mmi3 I held it no different.

Langer,

Have you returned these bats yet?

I ended up selling them as I didn't want to send them back and be without a bat for 3-4 weeks.

I purchased a KD Grandes Players bat with the money, and still had some to spare so will probably buy some gloves with the spare. I'm having it prepared by them, as I kow I would have rushed it, so I go back in on Tuesday to pick it up. I will do a review once I have it.

I'm pretty picky, and even though buying from the outside of Australia is much cheaper, I don't get to feel the bats, so I have learnt my lesson in that respect. (Bat Journey: SS Gladiator, H4L 666, L&W SR 1/2 inch longer bought in special offers, L&W PB and SR)

Shame they didnt work out for you. Look forward to seeing this KD bat then.

I noticed chat about the Slaz master class bats, Greg chappell cricket center have them (and the entire slazenger range on special) on special for an ok price.

How are they?I like the stickers and believe they look class!

Where are Slazenger Australian bats made? India same as UK ones? Sondhi?

Haven't been in yet to see what they feel like. I live a few hours out of Melbourne but I have emailed them to see how long they are on sale for as then I'll be driving up there for a few days to watch the boxing day test with Australia and India. So when I check em out in a few weeks times I'll get back to you! If its good and I buy it I'll have to sell my other Slazenger as I can't see the point in having a great bat and a good bat of the same brand and blade profile.

The Slazenger v12 ultimate I have has a made in india sticker on it. But the master class I couldn't say

Alright cheers mate, I appreciate it :).

Keep me updated :)

oh enjoy the Boxing Day Test :)

Went into the city yesterday and checked out the slazenger master class bats. Was not overly impressed with them to be honest so did not purchase. Not worth the money especially at the recommended retail prices of $700+aud. I was more impressed with v900 Ultimate felt better and was a lot bigger profile at the same weight.
Was most impressed with the GM Icon DXM and the Flare. They both are really well made they are.

Cheers for the update.

Over the past weeks in my nets I have been using Icon and I am finding it quite impressively, after getting it (few weeks after buying it) my opinion on Icon had slightly changed but since using it again I'm liking the shape now, the middle as people say is high is really not very high in my opinion.

I'd say keep an eye on post 2012 sales in UK as you might bag a good GM then :)

Thanks for that, you read my mind that was my plan!

Langer mate I got inspired by you lol :))

I saw the black part of grips on your (former) Lavers and I said they look nice, now I have a black grip on my Laver as well LOL :)) ;-) :p

Thanks for that, you read my mind that was my plan!

Haha :))

Whilst I appreciate you are posting a review I think it would be awesome if you can make a separate thread for it as this topic is Langer's

Thanks bud!

Sorry I figured rather than create a new tab I would post in a topic already talking about laver. No worries I will create a new one
