National T20 Cup - (Low) quality broadcast and commentary

Apparently PCB is doing all the production so no names, no scores etc are all PCB's fault

PTV is not behind the production of National T20

The guy who is taking care of the scorecard, should be terminated immediately.

The PCB offers its regrets to the fans for the technical glitch that resulted in the loss of live-scores during the 1st match. This problem was resolved in the 2nd match & the PCB now hopes the graphics will fully support the quality pictures & commentary of the National T20 Cup.

Hahaha I’m looking forward to seeing Wasim take notes which he will read off from in New Zealand.

:wa “This youngster, Imran Khan Jr, only 16 years of age, very good domestic record. He got 10 wickets at 25.32 average, very promising bowler from the recent National T20 conducted in Pakistan. I have spoken with him in the nets as well, working on reverse swing. I told him to lock his wrists, little bit of work and he can do wonders.”

:wa
I am sure if they forget to round off his average of 25.3275925435679386226..... , Wasim will keep on reading his average until the match is over.

To be honest - I didn’t see any difference between the current coverage and the previous one.

Early days so there is time for improvement.

Pakistan is 73 years old and we are still stuck in stone ages as far as our camera and equipment is concerned.

Most of the people working on that broadcast must have been 73.

What an utter shambles.

Were will they be streaming youtube Facebook?

Again the poor quality is due to PTV, not the cameras being used. PCB just uploaded highlights for the first game and the quality is perfectly fine.

Better Camera Work today & graphics are also much better today expect the detail of no. of balls faced by the batsmen, that's almost invisible.

Do not mention any illegal streams on Pp

Tried watching the coverage for half an hour on youtube, turned it off now as the appalling production quality has given me a headache.

I dont understand pcbs hightlights package is so clear yet their live stream isnt..

Camerawork is abysmal to say the least to go with the graphics as well.

Can not spot the ball at all.

It is like the graphics have been done by a 5 year old which can't be read clearly as that is how tiny it is all joined together.

I dont understand pcbs hightlights package is so clear yet their live stream isnt..

That is because they put them in 1080 HD quality and their live stream isn't.

So basically after the match, they upgrade the quality of their highlights package which is why it looks clearer.

The stream quality seemed at best 360p to me, it was grainy and turbid akin to the coverage we used to get of domestic matches in the 90s.

I was watching the steam online on PCB's youtube channel, it was much better today and camera work improved from yesterday but obviously still below par with international standards. Given the way the PCB promoted the production and quality, i was expecting hawkeye, indepth ball tracking, snickometer, speed guns.

None of these are available yet which was a huge disappointment for me. We are still way behind the rest of the world

i think the mess up in production with PTV has resulted in this..as i was expecting PSL coverage which was clearly HD

Thoughts on PTV's coverage of National T20 Cup?

Personally think its still pretty poor. The commentary is as good as it can be. But the camerawork is shaky and unprofessional. The graphics have a really cheap look and yesterday the scoreboard disappeared for no good reason.

If this is going to be the standard for Pakistan's home series than everyone in PCB and PTV should be ashamed.

I don't see why they can't instill some professionalism into the production. I mean if PTV can fork up what I can only assume was alot of money to get the likes of McGrath, Lara, Chappell, Jadeja to appear on Game On Hai why can't they fork up some money and get some professional camera-operators, graphic designers? Bring them over from abroad if you have to.

I fought the pcb YouTube channel was poor well behave standards couldn't even see the scorecard properly

Some ups and downs so far this season.

First of all, the quality of the video itself is undeniably better since the production team is using HD cameras. PTV doesn’t use those, and the difference is apparent. Anybody who is watching in Pakistan on a TV (not via stream) can see that.

BUT – the difference isn’t as big as it should be, and that’s because of PTV Sport’s limitations. Their broadcast is in SD, it’s not even 720p. So while the production itself may be in 1080p, the broadcast is filtered and loses a lot of quality – yet it’s still better than before. You can see the massive difference in quality when PCB upload videos on social media or YouTube that aren’t from the live broadcast; they are much clearer.

Now with quality out of the way, another issue so far has been incompetency from the production team. I don’t know if their people are new or what. But the cameramen frequently lose sight of the ball. The director often fails to switch to the correct camera angle. The graphics are odd at times with incorrect ones being shown, such as the wrong player’s statistics, oddly spelled names, etc.

Much room for improvement. Let’s hope they get it right soon, but ideally all this should have been sorted before the tournament.

They don't know how to shoot anything. Cameras are shakier than a found-footage horror movie. They need to hire a new production team or something because this just won't cut it for international matches.

They definelty need to hire a proper director.

Well they should at least change the cameramen of the both bowling ends.

When a batsman plays the shot towards the onside, camera goes towards offside.

When batsman plays towards midwicket, our dear cameraman shows fielder who is standing at thirdman position.

It takes him 3 to 4 seconds to spot the ball. These amateurs are destroying the quality of the tournament.

Are PTV going to improve their broadcast quality? Otherwise the entire deal is nonsense even if the cameras are 1080p. I hope this wasn’t a huge oversight when the deal was signed. For PTV to improve their broadcast will cost lots of $$ as it’s going to require back end infrastructure changes.

PTV deal is a disaster for cricket fans, tensports is thousand times better than this crap.

The camerwork on both bowling ends has to be handled by professionals

Work in progress. Years of negligence being fixed now.

well its back on right now even though it is 10 minutes behind definately much much clear than PTV for sure

There is something wrong with the Youtube feed. At times they quit the broadcast. Very unprofessional.

They did that yesterday with the 2nd game not even shown live and they initially left the chat on with indians abusing Pakistan non stop and then after several hours they disabled it.

not free. they have a 50-100 ruppee ticket in international and domestic games. Your *** hurts like hell after sitting on those. ANd when its hot, it burns....

Back in the 90's they were free but now they're charging 50-100 Rs.

Btw, are you still in Pindi near Liaquat Bagh?

After all the hype by PCB, it's been a disappointment.

Commentary terrible, production awful, studio coverage laughable, camera work poor.

It's like going back 30 years in time.

The only international level commentators they have are Ramiz Raja, Bazid Khan. Wasim Akram will join later. Aamir Sohail should have been called, unfortunately he doesn't get along with Ramiz and Wasim.

I wonder if there are any commentary courses or classes one can attend.

The rest of the things you mentioned will require investments and time to fix.

The youtube stream for Central Punjab vs Sindh has actually been pretty good, no interruptions and pretty good quality. As long as the production keeps improving as the tournament goes on, thats all you can really ask for.

Nothing to do with PTV, they are just broadcasting it within Pakistan and not part of production in any way

Who is the English commentator with some kind of weird American Accent, they call him "Shezzy"? He is partnering someone called Sikander

Tariq Saeed is by any standard a world-class commentator in his own language. In fact, better than all three you've mentioned.

Shehzar Mohammad, grandson of Hanif Mohammad.

Shehzar Mohammad is actually pretty good in technical terms.

Tariq Saeed commentary is world class and he clearly does his research on background.

With the world technology improving consistently, seems like Pakistan is just stuck in the stone age where they have old age cameras, technicians and no sense of actually moving with the times.

Most countries in the world have more less 80-90% content in 1080p HD quality and the channels are full HD where as Pakistan is mostly 240-360p quality at most.

Also on top the technology is now moving onto 4K with TV's already 4K ready and some online content being in 4K is already there where as even 8K is going to be out in the next 2-3 years if not max 5 years (due to COVID-19).

It is just to say that the quality of television in Pakistan and for those overseas is quite bad and not enjoyable as quality wise or vision wise if to say is not great, as I myself moved to watching content online which is at times in 1080p or at best 720p at times.

I only get to watch the 8-10 minutes highlights on their YouTube channel and I think the quality isn't that bad, it might even be HD.

Whats not good is the shoddy camerawork. The ball might be going through cover and the camera man is searching for it at fine leg. If it was once or twice in the tournament then it was ok but it is happening multiple times in each match! Couple that with the extremely cringey commentary and the overall quality of the package decreases.

Cricket standard is ok, a notch below PSL but umpiring is horrendous. It seems the umps base their decisions on the intensity of the appeal.

Live stream which is 10 mins delayed is what i have been watching in UK is definately HD its taken a while but i think its getting better

After all of the early criticism, I have to say, the quality of the broadcast has improved immensely (I'm watching the YouTube feed). Credit where due for improving.

I have muted most of the commentary during this tournament.

Today I listened to 2 or 3 minutes and had to mute it.

No technical knowledge, people talking over each other. Such basic observations.

Camerawork has improved massively.

Its improved big time but people still complain at every opportunity. Only problem is when ball is camera loses ball sometimes when its high in the air. I wonder if they can add speed guns?

If PCB's stream had been live and not 10-15 mins behind the actual live match, their YT views could be well in the range of over 70k+ instead of 10-15k I have seen at some times and even much lower at most times.

It really is bizarre as to why they can't get much right or on point from the start or in the middle of the tournament.

The graphics are still very bad and not readable at all, the score trend that they call it is all over the place with both teams have pretty much the same colour chart and makes it even harder than it is to be seen which belongs to which team.

They really do need to pull up their socks and improve in all aspects of their production for the coming years and get some people who know how to do good work in all of these.

They have a deal with PTV for live coverage. Are they allowed to siphon views away to the PCB Youtube channel?

Does it even make good business sense since marketing revenue comes through TV and not youtube?

Firstly, the PCB stream gets up to 30K unique views at one moment and about 500-600K viewers in total per match. Add to that, there's another stream maintained by Dot Republic (the same company that manages PCB media) that is showing the match live in 720p which also has viewership.

Note 1: PCB live streams aren't showing up in the archived section of their YT video page now so these figures are from the first few matches when I saw these myself

Note 2: Dot Republic's live channel used to rake in about 5K viewers as well when I was watching the stream there.

Secondly, a match being streamed 10 minutes late really has no impact on people watching it. We are watching the match there for HD quality, and if we are not following it on live text pages, it really does not alter the viewer's behavior.

Thirdly, the graphics need to be redone. It's not the color scheme that's the issue, small things like ALL CAPS TEXT is so hard to read. Someone needs to hire a professional design company that brings the production into modern times canceling all caps text, emboss framing/texts, and layout highlights.

Lastly, it's not about where they are at this moment that matters in terms of cricketing broadcasting but which direction are they heading that really matters. If they are on the upward curve with more and more improvements heading our way, this is a good place to be. Just check the last National T20 cup or any other cup in Pakistan and see the quality there. I was just checking an old tweet of Saj about Danish Azeez and it was impossible to see anything in it; the ball, the bowler, the batsman -- anything and everything was a literal haze and nothing else.

Yes, they need to continuously improve but it's a lot better than before and that's a small victory. Hopefully, this is just the first glimpse of the upward trajectory and not the ultimate.

The PCB YouTube channel is live streaming the matches on their channel with about a 10 minute delay.
Thanks for your response. I have now started watching and regardless of the complaints I read here I have to say I am really happy I can watch domestic cricket in Pakistan.

By far the worst commentator of the bunch is Shehzar Muhammad. This guy is terrible and painful to listen to. Thankfully he wasn't in yesterdays games and hopefully don't have to sit through any more stints of his in this tournament. Where did they find him from??

Tariq Saeed's urdu commentary is the best of the lot. Also probably the most knowledgable about the players.

Shehzar needs to go watch some more sports and learn how commentary is done.

We are watching the exact same game he is. We don't need him to hold our hand and talk non stop for the entire time he's on commentary.

Tariq Saeed and Azhar Ali is actually a good pairing, in fact when they are on the commentary becomes a lot more bearable.

I personally really enjoy Sikander Bakht's commentary. The guy's articulate, has a good voice and also indulges in banter with his co commentators. His pairing with Bazid is actually quite fun. With Tariq Saeed it's almost like I'm relearning Urdu. He really is very descriptive in his vocabulary. I think Azhar is better in Urdu
