Sharif family to skip all accountability court proceedings

LAHORE: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz and her husband retired Captain Muhammad Safdar left for London on Monday, a day before they were scheduled to appear before Islamabad’s accountability court in connection with corruption references, and according to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders, the family is likely to skip all the proceedings.

Mr Sharif and his sons — Hassan and Hussain — had been summoned, along with Maryam and her husband, in the accountability court on Tuesday.

A PML-N leader close to the Sharif family told Dawn on Monday, “Nawaz Sharif and his children will not appear before the accountability court and they are likely to skip all the proceedings of the accountability courts.”

Last month, the Sharif family and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar had chosen not to appear before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) after they were asked to join the investigation in different cases.

“The Sharifs are anticipating the outcome of these references, therefore they have no plans to appear before the accountability courts,” the PML-N leader said.

A NAB official told Dawn that the accountability court might issue bailable or non-bailable arrest warrants for members of the Sharif family if they did not turn up in court after receiving two summons. “We had exercised restraint and not issued arrest warrants for members of the Sharif family after they refused to join the investigation,” he said. NAB usually issues arrest orders for suspects, even in “petty white-collar crime cases”, but NAB chief Qamar Zaman Chaudhry appears to be soft on the Sharifs.

Counsel for the Sharifs Advocate Amjad Pervez did not confirm whether his clients had told him to appear before the accountability court or not.

“There has been no consultation on their or my appearance before the accountability court,” Advocate Pervez told Dawn.

Maryam, who had led the NA-120 by-election campaign on behalf of her mother Kulsoom Nawaz for over a month, left for London on a foreign airline flight hours after her mother won the by-poll with over 61,000 votes.

Maryam and retired Capt Muhammad Safdar’s departure has triggered speculation now that the entire Sharif family has gathered in London and may not return to face corruption and money laundering references filed against them in the accountability courts.

Saad’s advice to Maryam

A day after Maryam snubbed Railways Minister Saad Rafique over the ‘small margin’ of Begum Kulsoom’s victory, the minister advised her to be careful in her politics.

“Maryam Bibi was targeted because she was the daughter of Nawaz Sharif. She needs to be more careful (in politics),” he told a private news channel.

He, however, agreed with the comments of former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan that there was no comparison between Maryam and the late Pakistan Peoples Party leader Benazir Bhutto. “Of course there is no comparison between Maryam Bibi and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto at this stage as the latter had great sacrifices to her credit,” he said.

After winning the election, Maryam had lashed out at the judiciary and the military establishment.

Chor family successfully fooling their illetrate supporters and certain liberal brigade to give impression that they are somehow fighting a war against military-judiciary nexus.

The GT road "Mujhay kuyn nikala" drama was staged to ensure NAB cases against them don't proceed smoothly which could obviously mean chors going behind the bars for years in addition to being disqualified.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday gave former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and other family members another seven days to appear before the accountability court in connection with the Supreme Court-mandated corruption references.

NAB ordered that the family should appear before the court on September 26, directing that the summons be dispatched to the Sharif family's London address. Maryam Nawaz and her husband retired Captain Muhammad Safdar left for London on Monday to meet the rest of the family there.

During the court proceedings, NAB prosecutors told the court that they were not allowed entry into the Sharif family's multiple homes and had to hand the summons to the guards at each of the properties.

The prosecutors also said that earlier, Hassan and Hussain Nawaz had refused to receive the summons.

PML-N leader Asif Kirmani, who appeared in court on the Sharifs' behalf, said that the family was not present [in court] as they had all gone to be with Kulsoom Nawaz who is recovering from surgery.

Kirmani also told the court that Kulsoom is scheduled to undergo another surgery in the next couple of days, therefore an exact date for the family's return cannot be ascertained.

Their definition of democracy is that there is no accountability.

interesting. So does this now mean there is another group taking over in PMLN?

IK was criticised for not appearing in front of the ECP for contempt and the ECP is not even a court of law. Lets see what the Sharifs fans come up with this time?

And they also labeled Musharraf as coward for not facing courts and running away. Let's see how they defend their clown and his family

They would never have this much "jurrat" if the jahil awaam didn't keep voting for them.

I don't think any of them are ever coming back again.

Sharif brothers, their sons, daughters, wives and everyone in the family is now outside Pakistan.

She was undergoing surgery but still could not resist standing in an election. This whole illness is most likely a farce; just like Nawaz's heart surgery. He had a heart surgery and was walking down aeroplane stairs a few days later :p

What kind of crap is this?

How does one even have the option to choose whether to show up or not?

This is crap! If they have fled the country, need to extradite them back to Pakistan. No longer can Pakistan as a nation keep putting up with this type of **. Need to make sure that justice is served.

It is mind boggling how this family has supporters when they are not even willing to be held accountable. How can you vote for people like them? When is our people going to learn that we will never grow as a country if we keep these people in the office?

60% voters stayed at home (or not motivated enough to vote), which indicates that they do not find anyone worthy to represent them...for them ... there is no clean party/person...and they reject everyone...

we need to bring this 60% number to 80%

even in many mature democracies voter turnout hovers arond 50% so theres nothing to read it.

NAB freezes assets of Nawaz Sharif, children: sources

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has frozen the assets of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his children Maryam Nawaz, Hussain Nawaz, Hassan Nawaz and his son-in-law Captain (retired) Safdar, ARY News reported on Wednesday.

According to ARY News correspondent Zulqarnain Haider, a letter from NAB Lahore has directed relevant authorities including Lahore Development Authority (LDA), Capital Development Authority (CDA), Chief Commissioner Islamabad and banks that all property and assts belonging to Nawaz Sharif, his children Maryam Nawaz, Hussain Nawaz, Hassan Nawaz and his son-in-law Captain (retired) Safdar cannot be transferred or dissipated until further orders.

It emerged earlier in the day that the anti-corruption watchdog has also frozen bank accounts and other assets of the foreign minister.

A NAB Lahore team also raided finance minister Ishaq Dar’s house in Islamabad hours after an accountability court issued bailable arrest warrants against the PML-N stalwart.

Asset freezing is a legal process which prevents a defendant to an action from dissipating their assets from beyond the jurisdiction of a court so as to frustrate a potential judgment.

In July, Supreme Court removed Nawaz Sharif from the position of the prime minister after investigators found enough evidence for him and his family to be prosecuted over their ownership of luxury residences in London as well as offshore companies, revealed in the Panama Papers leaks.

NAB was ordered to file several references against Nawaz, his children Hussain, Hasan, and Maryam, son-in-law MNA Capt (retd) Safdar and Dar.

The accountability bureau was given six weeks, from the date of the court’s order, to file the references in the accountability courts of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Too little too late. The family has already escaped and they will rule Pakistan while sitting in London. Nawaz is the new Altaf.

Well, that escalated quickly. :)))

He is in England...he should send his legal team to NAB.

NAB should proceed with their cases and investigation...
If NAB is hoping for a confession, they would be disappointed.

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif returned to the country early Monday morning as the ex-premier once again questioned his disqualification by the Supreme Court.

Sharif, who left for London on August 30 on account of his wife's medical treatment, decided to return to the country to face the Supreme Court-directed corruption cases against him.

Reports had previously suggested that the former premier would stay in London until the complete recovery of his wife.

Nawaz meeting aides at Punjab House Sept 25
After his arrival from a PIA flight, Nawaz reached the Punjab House in Islamabad where he held a meeting with aides.

Sharif, his daughter Maryam, sons Hussain and Hasan, and son-in-law MNA Capt (retd) Safdar have been summoned by an accountability court tomorrow.

Addressing the media, Senator Asif Kirmani said Nawaz will appear before the accountability court tomorrow. "Nawaz did not go to London on a pleasure trip, he went to be with his wife," said Kirmani, adding that the former premier will address a press conference after his appearance in court tomorrow.

Kirmani said that political and legal consultations are under way at the Punjab House.

Responding to a question, he said Imran Khan is an immature and insensitive person. "Our opponents can wish for divisions within the party [but this is not the case]," he said answering another question.

Sources said that Sharif made the decision to return following a consultation meeting with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif in London.

They said the former premier wanted to appear before the accountability court to face references filed against him by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

After no-show, NAB court again summons Sharif family on Sept 26

NAB has filed three references against Nawaz Sharif and his children, pertaining to which an accountability court summoned them on September 19.

However, Sharifs failed to appear before the court as they were all in London.

At this, NAB moved the court to issue arrest warrants for the former prime minister, but the court rejected NAB's request and again issued summons for Sharifs to appear on September 26.

Sharif will appear before the accountability court on September 26, sources said, where he would present his stance on the references filed against him. They said the former premier will appear before the court without his lawyers and will represent himself in the case.

However, other members of his family will be staying away from court proceedings, sources said. The ex-premier's children, Hasan, Hussain and Maryam, will be staying with their mother in London.

Nawaz says NA-120 vindicated him by re-electing Kulsoom Nawaz

Speaking to newsmen before leaving for London's Heathrow airport, the ex-prime minister said they have not done any corruption in public funds.

"We have repeatedly said this is not a case of corruption or kickbacks. If it was about Panama Papers, then I should have been disqualified on same grounds, but we need to think over as to why was I sentenced over Iqama (employment contract)."

Sharif also questioned the references filed against him saying, "What kind of references are they? References are filed if someone has received kickbacks in giving contracts to people or done any corruption."

He said things were revolving around their family business dating back to 1972.

"They announced the verdict; they were the ones to listen to our appeal and now they would also be supervising the [NAB] proceedings," the former premier said.

"What kind of accountability and justice is this," he questioned.

Asked about his decision to immediately return to the country, Sharif said he did not intend to stay there for long and not to return home.

Confirming Sharif's return to the country, PML-N spokesman Mushahidullah Khan said that Nawaz is the most popular leader in the country.

"He is the leader of PML-N and the people of Pakistan and is returning to country to play the very role," Mushahidullah said, adding that opponents' claims that Nawaz would now be working from London have proven wrong.

'Battle of 200 million people'

Maryam Nawaz hailed her father in a tweet stating, "It takes great amount of courage & valour to be willing to pay the price for challenging what needs to be changed."

"It is not about his person anymore. It is the battle of 200 million (people)," she said further.

'Nawaz, Shehbaz fail to agree on political issues'
Nawaz Sharif and his brother, Shehbaz Sharif, failed to agree on any political issue during the meeting in London, sources informed.

Sources said that Shehbaz reached London to speak to the former premier about a complete agenda. But the Punjab CM failed to convince his elder brother.

Shehbaz was even unaware of Nawaz’s decision to return to Pakistan, sources said.

The Punjab chief minister is expected to return to country sometime between September 28 to 30.

I hope these criminals will not be able to even find a grave upon their death. You have all this wealth and power and you can do so much for so many. Yet you continue to want more and more. Doesn't it get boring? Tiring? How much is enough?

Nawaz Sharif leaves after appearing before NAB court

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif appeared before a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) court on Tuesday in connection with three corruption references, DawnNews reported.

The proceedings lasted for only a few minutes after the former premier was allowed to leave. Sharif reportedly informed the NAB court that his wife was not well and he needed to attend her, following which Sharif was granted permission to leave.

A number of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders, including federal ministers, accompanyed the former prime minister, who returned to the country on Monday morning, at his first appearance before the accountability court, which had summoned Sharif after his failure to appear at an earlier hearing on Sept 19.

The court had also summoned Sharif’s sons — Hussain and Hassan — but they are not appearing today as they are still in London tending to their mother, who is undergoing cancer treatment.

Earlier, sources in the PML-N told Dawn that the counsel for Sharif’s sons would ask the court to exempt his clients from personal appearance since they were looking after Kulsoom Nawaz.

Sharif’s political secretary Asif Kirmani told reporters outside Punjab House that the former prime minister would hold a press conference today (Tuesday) after appearing before the NAB court.

On Monday, the former prime minister was received by a number of party leaders, including National Assembly Spe*aker Ayaz Sadiq and cabinet ministers, at the airport and was whisked to Punjab House amid tight security.

Kirmani said that the former PM held a number of informal meetings and consulted senior party leaders, as well as members of his legal team, to devise strategies to deal with the legal and political challenges facing the party.

NAB reopens Lahore Development Authority plots case against Nawaz

LAHORE: A day before ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif is appearing before an accountability court in Islamabad in corruption and money laundering cases, the National Accountability Bureau, Lahore, on Monday launched another investigation into illegal allotment of plots against him.

The decision to open the decades-old case against Mr Sharif was taken in a meeting of NAB here on Monday which was presided over by Director General Shahzad Salim.

“The NAB has re-launched investigation for allotting Lahore Development Authority plots to 13 people in violation of the rules and the laid-down procedure in 1990s,” a NAB official told Dawn.

He said the bureau had summoned all beneficiaries for Sept 29 and notices were served on them through Lahore police chief Amin Wains.

The inquiry [into illegal allotment of plots] had been pending with NAB for over a decade.

“The investigation into the case was initiated in 2000s but later it was not pursued owing to some pressure,” a source said, adding the file was ‘lost’ in the [NAB] record for years till the bureau got a direction from the top authorities to re-investigate the case.

“Nawaz Sharif will be summoned [in this case] after NAB records statements of the beneficiaries,” he said.

The source said NAB was likely to re-open another case of illegal recruitments in the Federal Investigation Agency against Mr Sharif. “After 2008 when the PPP government assumed power almost all inquiries [against politicians] were swept under the carpet,” he said.

NAB has already filed three references against Nawaz Sharif and his children – Hassan, Hussain and Maryam – son-in-law Muhammad Safdar and one against Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in the accountability courts of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

The references are related to their offshore holdings - Avenfield Properties (London), Azizia Steel Mills, Hill Metal Company and the other companies of the Sharif family that include Flagship Invest*ments, Hartstone Properties, Que Holdings, Quint Eaton Place 2, Quint Saloane, Quaint, Flagship Securities, Quint Gloucester Place, Quint Paddington, Flagship Developments, Alanna Services (BVI), Lankin SA (BVI), Chadron, Ansbacher, Coomber and Capital FZE, Dubai.

Mr Sharif was disqualified by the Supreme Court on July 28 in the Panama Papers case.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif appeared before a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) court on Tuesday in connection with the three corruption references, DawnNews reported.

The proceedings lasted for only a few minutes after which the former premier was allowed to leave. Sharif reportedly informed the NAB court that his wife was not well and he needed to attend to her, following which Sharif was granted permission to leave.

The NAB court then adjourned for 10 minutes before continuing with the normal case proceedings.

The court has summoned Sharif again on October 2 for formally indicting him in the three separate references.

The court also issued bailable arrest warrants for Sharif's children Hassan, Hussain, and Maryam, and for son-in-law Captain Safdar. The court directed them to submit surety bonds worth Rs 1 million each to secure bail.

NAB's legal team also requested the court to order the interior ministry to place Sharif's name on the exit control list.

A number of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders, including federal ministers, accompanied the former prime minister to his first appearance before the accountability court.

The court had summoned Sharif, who arrived Monday morning from London, after his failure to appear at an earlier hearing on Sept 19.

The court had also summoned Sharif’s sons — Hussain and Hassan — but they are not appearing today as they are still in London tending to their mother, who is undergoing cancer treatment.

During the court appearance, some PMN-L followers started chanting slogans in Sharif's support inside the courtroom, annoying the judge Mohammad Bashir, who then asked the former premier to leave as his lawyers were there to represent him.

Sharif has now returned to Punjab House in the federal capital, where he is expected to chair a meeting of senior PML-N officials later in the day.

Extraordinary security arrangements
According to a report published by BBC Urdu, extraordinary security arrangements were made on the occasion and the general public was not allowed even within a kilometre radius area near the judicial complex.

Security was so tight that the NAB prosecutors following the case were also not allowed inside the courtroom.

The incumbent government probably didn't trust anyone with the security arrangements, as instead of Islamabad police chief the state minister for interior, Talal Chaudhry, was supervising the security.

In addition to the extensive on-ground arrangements, two helicopters also kept circling the area throughout the time Nawaz Sharif was there.

The most significant development of Monday was Sharif’s meeting with the former interior minister and estranged PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan. The latter spent a considerable amount of time at Punjab House after holding a one-on-one meeting with the former prime minister.

Chaudhry Nisar has been openly criticising PML-N’s strategy in dealing with the issues related to the military and judiciary and was critical of the party’s policy after the July 28 verdict of the apex court in the Panama Papers case.

A senior PML-N leader and party office-bearers told Dawn that the Nawaz-Nisar meeting materialised due to the efforts of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, who is still in London and expected to return in the next few days.

The sources said that the former prime minister was not feeling comfortable due to a knee ailment, and was seen sitting in an unusual posture since he was unable to bend his legs.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi also visited Punjab House on Monday evening and held consultations with his predecessor on issues related to governance.

Others who called on Sharif included PML-N chairman Raja Zafarul Haq, Deputy Speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi, Punjab Governor Rafiq Rajwana, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Iqbal Zafar Jha*gra, ministers Zahid Hamid, Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Abdul Qadir Baloch, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, Daniyal Aziz and Talal Chaudhry.

Speaking to reporters in London before leaving for Islamabad, the former prime minister had said that he had come to the UK only to inquire after the health of his wife and had no plans to stay for a long time.

The Sharif family had earlier opted to boycott court proceedings. However, the sources said they changed their mind and decided to appear before the courts on the advice of a number of senior party leaders, including Shahbaz Sharif, and their lawyers.

Accountability Judge Mohammad Bashir had earlier summoned Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz, sons Hussain and Hassan Nawaz and son-in-law retired Captain Mohammad Safdar on Sept 19 in connection with three corruption references filed by NAB under Supreme Court orders.

Though Sharif and his children have publicly expressed concerns over the SC judgement and had filed review petitions before the same bench, the petitions were all dismissed on Sept 15.

NAB had filed three references against the Sharif family in connection with the London properties, the establishment of 16 companies, including Flagship Investment Ltd in the UK and Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment in Jeddah.

The former premier and his sons have been named in all three references, while Maryam and Capt Safdar have only been named in the Avenfield reference.
