'Nehru's India' Remark By Singapore PM 'Unacceptable': Government Sources

Sources say the foreign ministry has summoned the Singapore envoy and conveyed its strong objection

India today reacted sharply to the Singapore Prime Minister's remarks on "Nehru's India" becoming one where "more than half of the MPs" face criminal charges and said it would "take up the matter".

"The remarks by the Prime Minister of Singapore were uncalled for. We are taking up the matter with the Singaporean side," government sources said today.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had referred to India's first Prime Minister during an impassioned debate in the Singaporean parliament on democracy in a city-state.

"While Nehru's India has become one where, according to media reports, almost half the MPs in the Lok Sabha have criminal charges pending against them, including charges of rape and murder. Though it is also said that many of these allegations are politically motivated," Mr Lee had said.

Sources say the foreign ministry has summoned the Singapore envoy and conveyed its strong objection.

Not sure what wrong did he say there? If current government is embarrassed they should address it by not giving seats to rapists and murderers.

Simply using your geopolitical clout to get others to shut up won't clean the current government's image.

This Is Fuhrer Modi’s India now!
ROFL.. at least someone admitted to it!

Bigotry won’t be defended or ignored at the world forum by non-Indian, even Indian CEOs in the west won’t, India is neither Israel nor France :)

Errr....what is wrong with current govt's image? You are reading too many posts here...LOL. Truth is India's image is at its all time high thanks to the capable leadership we have since 2014.

Lol, are sanghis for real? Who do they think they are? Do they think they can shut up anyone?

Capable? Half the indian leadership have a criminal history or have a rap sheet for racial bigotry and inflammatory comments

I know I am being pedantic, but it should be communal. Indian muslims are not a different race of people.

Not at all. I have definitely seen a downturn in India's image in the 3 countries I have lived in since Modi took power - France, UK and Germany. Many people have asked me whether Modi is a facist. And no, none of them are Pakistanis and or have any love for Pakistan. For most of them Pakistan is a non-entity.

But they hear what's happening in the news with regards to the bigotry, and then the incompetence on the government.

Doesn’t help when the news cycle regarding india in past 3 years has been dominated by Delhi riots, CAA bad press, beef lynchings, farmer protests and covid delta wave deaths and apathy of central government. there were a few others too but these ones got major international news coverage

Well popularity of Modi dosent get defined by what your friends are saying, isnt it? The fact is every 1st world country has given rolls royce welcome to Modi. Let it be in Wembley, Sydney, Madison Square Gardens, British Parliament, UN Congress everywhere. Heck, Donald Trump hosted an entire event 'Howdy Modi' for him in Texas. He was also given highest civilian award in UAE. Remind me any other Indian PM had such aura?

So some of your friends saying Modi is fascist means nothing. The fact is he is one of the most popular global leaders and India under him has only progressed.

All those events are sponsored by the Indian diaspora in those countries, and not by the actual Brits, Americans etc. Most Brits and Germans have a negative image of Modi and the social situation in India.

And the other part why Modi get "rolls Royce" (most leaders of g20 are given similar reception) is due to the Indian economy's importance.

India's value as a global player in the G20, does not mean Modi is revered. India is important, Modi is not.

In the UK, the Labour Party, and in Germany's SPD (now in power) have raised questions about India's human rights record lately. Earlier, these same people would be vocal about India as beacon for managing various religious and regional differences.

The more left governments return to power in the West (US, Germany, hopefully UK in 24) the more questions on Modi's human rights record will be raised, and rightly so.

When I talk to people (and most of them are not my friends), I make sure to inform that Modi is not a representative of India. He is just another small minded right wing bigot.

So was India not a global player in G20 or was Indian economy not important before 2014? How many times Manmohan Singh was invited in British Parliament or UN Congress or Australian parliament? None of those were Indian diaspora organized events.

Also, how did you conclude most Brits amd Germans dont like Modi? Any survey or statistics to back your claims?

Look the fact is Modi has hold the collar and shaped India's fortunes since 2014. This is something many in west not able to digest as they were used to India being always led by weak and meek leaders. The fact that present Indian PM can look into the eyes of west and can call spade a spade dont go down with many.

India is in great hands...you should rather educate the people you talk with bcoz they are misguided. Just remind them that in India - 'Sab Changa Si'.

So he was summoned then given a slap on the wrist for being a naughty boy! Or should I say for being honest! I see that Indian news channels like poking their noses in to the affairs of others but don't like to see that done to them.

People will speak the truth that India is ruled by racists and fascists. If most Indian's are happy with that then hey good luck! As a Pakistani I am delighted that the Quaid Jinnah has been vindicated. It is fun to see Mehmood Madani and Owaisi brothers beating their chests in anger when their women's hijabs are being forcefully removed:riz.

Stop making things up. Donald trump did not host any event for Modi in Texas. The event was held by Modi’s team and Trump came as a guest

When did Modi look any western leader in the eye and call a spade a spade? Os there any example of Modi criticising western leaders for controversial policies which affect Asia detrimentally?

The problem here is Singapore is a one party dictatorship and their PM Lee Hsien Loong is arguing for no democracy because it can lead to criminals getting into parliamanent, citing the indian example. Why not point to the more mature democracies in Europe ?
