New Zealand (209 & 483 f/o) narrowly defeat England (435/8 d & 256) by 1 run to win the 2nd Test

Anderson 31 overs
Broad 31 overs
Robinson 36 overs
Leach 58 overs

In both innings so far. NZ can make htem work hard even if they lose.

England missed a trick by not batting again. They can now lose this game if Kiwis can add 150-200 more runs.

Pitch is so flat now that New Zealand would have had a chance against a huge target batting last.

Recent history with this England team suggests that a target of 320 for them to win on the last day would make for a really exciting game! :)

Stokes is testing the physical limits of his bowlers. Luckily the weather is 19 deg celsius. In places where the temperature can touch 35 and above this will take a lot out of you.

Most batting all rounders are all rounders only till 70 tests. After that, they no longer give as much effort in bowling because it is their weaker suit and they reach their 30s too.

That's why for me, Kallis will fall into all rounders category inspite of him not picking 2 WPM. After 70 tests, he was doing well with around 160 wickets. In next 90 tests, he got only 130.

Typical NZ pitch. They keep getting better for batting and are absolute patta on day 4-5. England will still fancy their chances to score 350 in 2.5 sessions.

They have to bat well in to tomorrow. In case NZ escapes they owe it to Southee's cameo. Pant's counter attack helped us earn a draw at the SCG.

Brook is having the time of his life. T20 exploits, Test records, IPL millionaire. Now he has broken the stand with an innocuous delivery

NZ is still way behind given the nature of the pitch. It is a pitch where batsmen have to make mistake to get wickets.

3rd gift from NZ. England was doing negative bowling by pitching outside the leg stump. Southee committed harakiri with wild hoick. Serious mental block. England bowling was at their mercy hopelessly.

NZ needed another 100 runs imo. But when you have no hopes like Bracewell, this was bound to happen.

NZ fought hard to come back in the game then handed it back on a platter. 4 runs 4 wickets.

England didn't try to take wickets at all lol They were just having a defensive field set bowling defensively. NZ just gave all their wickets away

Ooh, we have a test match!

Knew ENG should have batted and not enforced the follow-on.

Amazing effort by New Zealand. But it might not be enough. Really hope this discourage teams from enforcing more follow-ons in the future though.

Could be an interesting chase though NZ have a weak bowling lineup. Sodhi would've been dangerous here

Well England have certainly done their best to make a game of this one.

Don’t think we will see the follow on from Ben Stokes again for a while. Not to say it was unequivocally a mistake, but it’s a lot to ask of the bowlers.

Another messy innings from Crawley then, this time for 24 and out. We close on 48/1 needing 210 more to win. Duckett on 23* and Robinson on 1*.

Could be an exciting finish tomorrow!

Second Test, Wellington, (day four of five)

England 435-8 dec (Brook 186, Root 153*; Henry 4-100) & 48-1 (Duckett 23*)
New Zealand 209 (Southee 73) & 483 (Williamson 132, Leach 5-157)
England need 210 more runs to win

England need 210 more runs to win the second Test after finally dismissing New Zealand for 483 on day four in Wellington.

Kane Williamson made a faultless 132 and Tom Blundell 90 as the Black Caps ground their way back into the game after being asked to follow-on.

It left England needing to pull off the highest run-chase by any team that has enforced the follow-on in a Test, while only three other teams have ever made more than New Zealand following-on against England.

The toil of England's bowlers on a docile pitch was made harder by captain Ben Stokes not joining the attack because of his troublesome left knee.

Even Harry Brook was called on to bowl his medium pace, remarkably claiming Williamson as his first Test wicket and sparking a New Zealand collapse of 5-28.

England were left with 11 overs to bat at the of the day, in which time the under-pressure Zak Crawley was bowled through the gate by Tim Southee for a skittish 24.

Ben Duckett remains on 23 in the company of nightwatchman Ollie Robinson on 1, with England 48-1.

Against sloggers wristies can be effective as you cannot always time the ball very well like you do against finger spinners. Your next best option left arm spinner. They should have played Santner who is good at pace variation. Instead they play this useless bracewell for his batting. But so far he has done nothing.

A very crucial 5 fer by Leach
He has improved alot under Stokes. England needs Mark wood in these situations

A 350 chase would've been entertaining, England should chase this easily

Hmm. This nighthawk rubbish is dispensed with then….

How? lol Her feet was not inside the crease. Here he didn't even attempt to ground the bat. At least she tried.

She was cruising in a World Cup final where her being at the crease was basically integral to her team's chances of making the final. It was a much more unforgivable dismissal. Eventhough her bat got stuck in the crease.

Bracewell came off looking like a fool but his dismissal was not nearly as important in the grand scheme of things.

Bairstow schooled Bracewell properly in England. So it was a surprise they again back him. Babar Azam gave them false hope?

His batting is good. His bowling has always been rubbish. And honestly, any bowler that pulls of a great performance against Pak should be taken with a gain of salt.

Pak has made heroes out of guys like Marcus North, Colin de Grandhomme and Nathan Hauritz

Average 32 under Root and 39 under Stokes.

Freedom to attack yielding wickets

Would be intrigued to see comparative wickets per game and strike rate stats for Leach as well.

Stokes sets far more attacking fields and trusts him / backs him a lot more than Root did, so I would expect the average to be higher.

This game should have a result, unless there is rain.

210 more runs to go. 9 wickets in hand.

England are favorites to win it 2-0.

This is also important. 50 to 70 more runs they had an opportunity to go for a draw. Second of all it is not about importance, it is about laziness. Almost his entire body has crossed the line yet got run out. That was literally a gift.

210 runs more with 9 wickets in hand. with pitch being flattened out, ENG are the favourites to win it. will be great watch if NZ surprisingly pull off a victory here, but surprises are a bit rare. no rain forecast, result guaranteed.

Looks all set for another England victory.

What a team they have become. So much talent at their disposal in all formats.

Disastrous first hour for England.

An old fashioned “batting collapse on tour”.

Needs a Root-Stokes special now otherwise it’s going to be a New Zealand victory, a tied series, and the end of England’s impressive winning run.

Good to see Root is stepping up once again. One of the very few classic Test batsman going around. He is moving further away from his contempararies. Labu/Smith slightly behind him. Kane shows up against 'certain" teams, in "certain" conditions. Atleast he shows up. Kohli is not even the 5th best batsman in the Indian side.

Day 5: Lunch Break - England need 90 runs

NZ 209 & 483 (f/o)
ENG 435/8 d & 168/5 (44) CRR: 3.82

Got to love Test cricket.

Michael bracewell is what you call Dead investment. 9 overs 48 runs !! They might as well have picked Sodhi or Santner.

I wonder if they picked Bracewell for his batting.

But, I agree that Sodhi or Santner could've been better. Even Ajaz.

Stokes has been pretty lucky this innings.
But I guess that compensates for Brook being run out without facing a ball

Joe Root miscues a pull to midwicket. Departs for 95.
56 still needed with 3 wickets in hand.

This is Tendulkar Chennai moment for Joe Root. Now forever Pakistani fans will call him choker for this just like they called Tendulkar one.

He was carrying an injury and he just wanted to bazball his way to the target. Miscalculated.

All test matches should be played in NZ. It's the only place where Test Cricket is somewhat interesting.

wow NZ fielding made a epic blunder. Fielder was needlessly standing way infront. Ball just evaded him for 4. Match defining moment

Back to back 4s. short balls being punished. England is nearing the victory. Good try NZ. But this 100% short ball tactic was not going to work. You still need to mix it up.

Pakistan had a chance to win the first test in somewhat similar situation. They blew it big time on a flat track.
