New Zealand (209 & 483 f/o) narrowly defeat England (435/8 d & 256) by 1 run to win the 2nd Test

This bouncer strategy is a worse strategy if you don't have pace. Anderson/Broad tried against Bumrah and shami and ended up losing the Test that was possibly winnable. India blew them away for 120 runs.

At 40 years old your reflexes will be horrible. Being it is jamieson one can imagine how bad reflex will be

short ball to tailender may backfire as you can see. He knows he is not going to get bowled lol He just has to swing it.

Siraj bowled full and knocked Andeson's poles in the wee hours. Why can't these guys back themselves to beat the defense of a 40 year old

NZ strategically made some errors. One was square leg field position. Then lack of full balls against Jack leach.

Leach played a dumb maiden last over lol What was he thinking .He should have taken a single somehow and tied it first.

Bit painful given the penultimate ball was clearly wide but it is what it is, what a test match.

Unbelievable ending. But NZ should consider themselves super lucky. Their continuation of the short pitch plan was extremely stupid once Foakes and Leach neutralised it completely. Not once did they ever try to hit the stumps. Extremely lucky to have survived this. But congratulations are in order. Only the 4th time a team has won after following on.

60% of their bouncers were not even accurate. It is not like those Johnson bouncers that terrorized England. It was a case of England wanting to take them on and getting out.

Run rate is 3.4. So what happened to "Bazball"?

I don't get why indians are so worried about bazball. Stokes has mentioned before as well that they do not think about run rate. They just want to let everyone play the way they want

2nd Test • England tour of New Zealand, 2023
NZ 209 & 483 (f/o) (162.3)
ENG 435/8 d & 256 (74.2)
New Zealand won by 1 run

This reminds me of the famous Ashes win by England. Harmison picked the last wicket when they were 2 away from win.

Here comes the "Indians" card.

Incredible test match.
Almost got over the line
But this shows how reliant England have been on Brook

Great match!

New Zealand win, and cricket also wins :)

Seen several wins like this. All of them were memorable one way or the other. Graeme smith who could barely stand had to defend one over to earn a draw i think. Mitchell Johnson bowled fast and full, hit the crack and sent the stumps cart wheeling.

The pitch had no demons. England could have done a calculated chased. Stokes had a chance to stay not out another one. First time missed.

This was a battle between Baz ball vs Conventional ball. Conventional ball won by a hair thanks to one gift of a run out.

One of the greatest test wins of all-time. Saw the entire day and just completely blown away.

Pink ball Test worked in England's favor because they took the initiative of scoring fast in first 2 sessions and having a go at them in the last session. Credit to them. Especially with Anderson and Ollie. That will be a trend going forward. This one is a bit more traditional. No "session" advantage.

Poor decision but only 3 teams had previously won after being asked to follow on. England should have won this tbh

NZ should have drawn as well. Lost brainlessly 5 wickets for 28 runs. Some poor cricket from both sides. Eventually NZ finally used their aggressive attitude to their advantage by peppering them with short balls albeit poor short balls. I saw the back end. Lot of the short balls were terrible short balls. You have no reason to get out to kind of balls. England played as if their ego was bruised. I understand players like Stokes, Root taking on short ball. Broad? One of the worst player against short ball in history lol

Great match and a top performance from Kane Williamson. In recent times, don't recall him playing a knock of this quality considering that he was under pressure to perform vs a top team.

Root was amazing too although choked in end just like Tendulkar. However, he is the closest in terms of batting perfection anyone has got to Tendulkar. The only thing he would have wished to improve is his performance in Australia but he has been so good vs rest that this shouldn't really take anything away from him.

Harry Brooks is a star and a young sensation. Very KPesque in the way he approaches his game. Consistency will decide his fate in long run though.

One of the main issue with Stokes enforcing the follow on is the workload of bowlers. That was an insenstivie declaration by Stokes not worrying about the work load of his aging bowlers. He acts like a mad scientist. He wants to change the way game should be played and won. Fine. But he needs players fit and firing. You can't push them beyond their capacity. This will be like a pyramid scheme. Suddenly it will collapse.

Second Test, Wellington, (day five of five)
England 435-8 dec (Brook 186, Root 153*; Henry 4-100) & 256 (Root 95, Wagner 4-62)
New Zealand 209 (Southee 73) & 483 (Williamson 132, Leach 5-157)
New Zealand win by 1 run

England lost to New Zealand by one run in one of the all-time great finishes to the second Test in Wellington.

On a barely believable final day at the Basin Reserve, last man James Anderson was caught down the leg side off Neil Wagner when England needed two to win.

Anderson had joined number 10 Jack Leach with seven required, after Leach added 36 for the ninth wicket with Ben Foakes, who was caught at fine leg for 35.

Anderson fended off a vicious bouncer from Wagner, then sensationally clubbed the next ball for four.

Leach saw off an over from Tim Southee, leaving the stage set for Anderson, but Wagner's fourth wicket left England 257 all out and drew a deafening roar from the Basin Reserve crowd.

Needing 258 to win the match and series, England calamitously slipped to 80-5, then after a stand of 121 between Joe Root and Ben Stokes, experienced another collapse of 3-14.

Foakes, Leach and Anderson almost got them over the line, but ultimately England lost a Test after enforcing the follow-on for the first time, the fourth such defeat in Test history.

It ends a run of six straight victories and denies them a seventh straight win, a feat last achieved by England in 2004.

For New Zealand, their first win after following-on earns a 1-1 draw in the series and protects an unbeaten home run that stretches back to 2017.

England's next Test is against Ireland at Lord's on 1 June before their bid to regain the Ashes begins on 16 June.

An almost entirely separate England squad begins a white-ball series in Bangladesh on Wednesday.

This was a breathtaking conclusion to a memorable Test, played out to a rapturous crowd given free entry to the Basin Reserve.

England repeatedly state their commitment to making Test cricket entertaining, but this cannot have been in the script.

When captain Stokes enforced the follow-on on the third morning, New Zealand were 226 behind and England dominant.

What followed was a magnificent Kiwi comeback, with Kane Williamson making a classy century. The Blacks Caps' total of 483 was the fourth-highest ever made by a team following-on against England.

Beginning the fifth day on 48-1, England were favourites on a pitch that remained good for batting until a chaotic collapse of four wickets for 27, the nadir of which was Harry Brook being run out without facing a ball.

Root's counter-attack and Stokes' stoicism - he took 116 balls over his 33 - looked to have regained control, before the pendulum swung again.

Foakes hooked just over Michael Bracewell at deep mid-wicket when he had 12 and New Zealand's short-ball plan became increasingly ragged.

The target ticked down, anticipation rose and, when Foakes finally made an error, the sight of 40-year-old Anderson walking to the crease was pure theatre.

It looked like he would hit the winning runs for the first time in his distinguished Test career, but instead England suffered only the second one-run defeat in Test history.

This loss will not derail England's preparations for the summer Ashes. Their style is established and they are transformed from the team that was on a run of one win in 17 Tests this time last year.

Indeed, the biggest concern coming out of this Test is the state of Stokes' fitness, with the all-rounder often hobbling and bowling only two overs in the match.

When the prolific Brook was run out, miles short of his ground after Root pushed towards the slips and took off, Root held his head in his hands.

It came after nightwatchman Ollie Robinson miscued a pull off Southee, Ben Duckett edged a cut off Matt Henry for 33 and the unsettled Ollie Pope did the same off Wagner for 14.

England were in tatters, New Zealand rampant and the Basin Reserve buzzing.

But Root started to make amends for his part in the Brook run-out by launching a blistering assault, targeting the off-spin of Bracewell for particular punishment.

What made the action all the more compelling was Stokes' grim determination while batting on one leg.

Transformed from the man out slogging in the first innings, Stokes took only one run from his first 19 balls, then mainly scored with edges through or over the slips.

Root's half-century came at a run-a-ball. In the first 50 runs he added with Stokes, the captain's contribution was just five.

Wagner's trademark short-ball plan seemed to be New Zealand's last hope. It worked.

Stokes' ugly swipe ended in a top edge to square leg, while Root miscued a pull to miss out on his second century of the match.

Stuart Broad guided a Henry bouncer to third man and England were floored.

But Foakes is unflappable and Leach has form for match-winning partnerships, having supported Stokes in the famous Ashes win at Headingley in 2019.

Though Foakes' decision to regularly turn down runs seemed questionable, he ensured Leach only once faced more than two balls in the over while gradually chipping away at the target.

Foakes had the match in his grasp only to go for one hook too many, leaving Anderson to write one more chapter in his storied career.

Anderson was upset that a Wagner short delivery was not called wide and, next ball, the brilliant Wagner had the final say to leave Leach one not out from 31 balls.

'Everyone got their money's worth - it was incredible'
England captain Ben Stokes: "That game as a whole, in terms of what Test cricket is about, was just incredible.

"The emotions that we were going through upstairs and I'm sure the Kiwi boys as well. It was incredible to be involved in. I think everyone has got their money's worth today.

"It's disappointing to end on a loss here after a great winter but winning four out of five is great for this team.

"We've got a few months off before the Ashes starts then hopefully we can get back to doing what we love doing."

New Zealand's Kane Williamson, who was named player of the match: "It doesn't quite feel right to be standing here after a game of cricket like that and the contributions we've seen from both teams throughout.

"A fantastic game of cricket to be a part of. For us as a team, we've been fighting away in the Test format for a while so it was nice to get it across the line in this one.

"We had to fight really hard to reverse some of that momentum. England are playing incredible cricket at the moment and we were up against it coming into this match.

"To find a way to wrestle our way back and get across the line is a really nice feeling."

Hope somebody was awake in PCB watching this..... perhaps give them ideas before creating roads for pitches in Pakistan tests.

Winning a Test after Following-on:

England v Australia (Sydney 1894)
England v Australia (Leeds 1981)
India v Australia (Kolkata 2001)
New Zealand v England (Wellington 2023)

England captain Ben Stokes said he felt "blessed" to have been part of their thrilling Test against New Zealand in Wellington, despite the tourists losing by one run.

The Black Caps edged past England in one of the all-time great finishes to draw the two-match series 1-1.

"It is disappointing to not win, but we look at the bigger picture," Stokes told BT Sport.

"What everyone has enjoyed here today is probably bigger than any disappointment at the moment.

"Being in that situation in the last half an hour, it is everything you wish for.

"And even though we came out on the wrong side of it, you can't help but feel blessed that we managed to be a part of an incredible game like that."

Speaking to BBC Sport about the moment James Anderson was dismissed to seal New Zealand's win, Stokes said: "I didn't know how Jimmy would react when he walked off.

"He's been in those positions before where he's walked off disappointed, but the fact he was walking off smiling made everything we talk and speak about true and a reality."

Stokes said he has no regrets about enforcing the follow-on despite New Zealand becoming just the fourth side in history to win a Test having been asked to do so.

"Imagine captaining in hindsight? That's not something I would ever do," he said.

"It was always our game to lose once we had enforced the follow-on. The logic was our bowlers had ripped through their top order three innings in a row and we knew New Zealand had to play pretty much the perfect game to put us in a situation like this.

New Zealand captain Tim Southee said the dramatic finale can only be good for the longest form of the game.

Gutting. Who would have thought that England couldn’t chase that down on a flat pitch against a depleted attack?

Last series victory in NZ was, when, 1992?

What a great test match this was!

Despite the drawn series, NZ would do well to make changes to their test squad. Its way past its best.

2008?? I remember Matt Prior inspired draw

"Blessed to be part of this game " is a nice diversion from the loss.

He sees the bigger picture for the game of cricket.

There isn’t much memorable Test cricket to speak of across the last 12 months if Ben Stokes is taken out of the equation.

I hope this thrilling (& lucky) win doesn't hinder kiwis from the bigger picture. That is, this unit is just not good enough to compete against SINA anymore. Wagner needs to go,if he willingly goes fine, if he doesn't then he needs to be kicked out. His trundling con act has been exposed. Bracewell can't be your top spinner. A timid confused Pak batting unit will make him world beater, but he is going to get plundered against the big boys. Finally, Henry Nichols! How can a guy with such little ability & substance can still play? He didn't belong in that 19 wc unit & he definitely doesn't belong now. Irrespective of formats, a guy like him should not feature in top level. They need to decide regarding Boult,if he doesn't want to play test anymore, then fine move on.

You forgot 2008? I believe Vaughn's last overseas victory as captain? Southee made his debut & Broad Anderson partnership started from here. Lot of memorable points. But I think the biggest takeway for me was, they got their *** handed over by Sidebottom of all people! They treated him like second coming of Wasim. It was comical, he even managed a hattrick I think. That team under Vettory was really struggling.

2008, the forced retirement of Hoggard — enter Siddy.

Was also the beginning of Draco and Old Man Jimmy as a bowling partnership.

England won 2-1 down there.

But yes, missed a big opportunity here to win this one or get at least a tie and win the series 2-0 or 1-0, as it is, 1-1 is a reasonable result. Great shame there is no decider on this occasion.

Greatest comeback from New Zealand

But for me Harry brook is new King 😎 full support for one and only Fearless Champion 🫡

Actually I did. That was the series where Anderson and Sidebottom replaced Harmison and Hoggard.

Sidebottom did pretty well with five fivefers and a tenfer in 22 tests.

That was a powerful England side with strong openers, KP, Bell, Collingwood, and Swann and Broad appearing. The end of the Vaughan era and the start of the Strauss era.

Pretty sure Sidebottom, Anderson, Tremlett etc played against India in 2007 series.

They should bring Rachin Ravindra into the side for Nicholls. Classy batsman, averages 40 opening the batting in tough conditions for Wellington, and brings handy left arm spin too. That also frees NZ to drop Bracewell and focus on a proper 4th bowler, be it spin or pace. Agreed on Wagner, this was a lionhearted performance but he has nothing left in the tank and his figures owed more to fortune than skill. Tickner bowled well in the first test, he deserves a few games. If he can’t hack it then NZ can start looking at some of the other young players like Ben Sears, Matt Fisher, Nathan Smith or Henry Shipley.

Open to losing for the greater good of the game. What a saint!
He could have made NZ bat on 5th day whilst playing the same attacking brand in 3rd innings

What a match! One of the tightest matches off all time where i was biting my nails. Pity we could have a decider. NZ have a great bowling attack.

He clearly didn’t want to lose the game. England only lost it by one run in the end anyway. He’s won over 80% of his Tests as captain. He is a born winner.

What he can see is that Test cricket is a dying brand in most parts of the world, and so more close finishes and exciting Test matches, less thrashings and fewer bore draws will benefit the sport as a whole & might even give cricket’s purest format a chance of surviving a while longer.
