Locked and loaded. The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 second semifinal is about to kick off with South Africa and New Zealand battling it out for a spot in the big dance! It's been quite the journey for both squads, who've been racking up some serious frequent flier miles. The Proteas had that crucial 18-hour Dubai layover after their last pool game, just in case they ended up facing India in the semis. And the Kiwis? It's the same deal – they flew all the way to Dubai to play India for their last league match, only to turn around and head back to Lahore for this knockout match. Now they're finally settling in at Gaddafi Stadium, ready to duke it out. Talk about cricket travel chaos. New Zealand enters this high-stakes clash on the back of a defeat to India, but with a silver lining, their recent tri-series win over South Africa at this very venue will surely boost their confidence. While the loss to India in a dead-rubber game doesn’t carry much weight, it did offer the Kiwis a valuable preview of the Dubai conditions, a knowledge that could prove crucial if they meet India again in the final. The biggest positive from that game was Kane Williamson’s return to form at the perfect moment. After a quiet start to the tournament, the stalwart stepped up with a classy 81, reminding everyone why he’s the heartbeat of this side. With the bat in hand, New Zealand looks formidable. Tom Latham, Will Young, and Rachin Ravindra have already notched centuries in the tournament, showcasing a batting unit that’s thriving in these conditions. In Pakistani-like pitches, where runs flow more freely, the Kiwis seem to have found their rhythm. With the ball, New Zealand has been nothing short of impressive.

One of their standout moments came when they restricted India to a sub-par total, showcasing their ability to step up when it matters most. Matt Henry has been a model of consistency, leading the pace attack with precision, while Will O’Rourke has provided solid support, making them a formidable pair. In the spin department, the duo of Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell has been instrumental, delivering economical spells that have kept opposition batters in check. What’s truly remarkable is their ability to contain teams to under 260 in batting-friendly conditions. And let’s not forget their fielding, which has always been their biggest positive. Glenn Phillips, in particular, has once again been a highlight reel, pulling off stunning acrobatics, including those jaw-dropping catches to dismiss Virat Kohli and Babar Azam. He’s been a livewire in the inner ring, turning half-chances into game-changing moments. Overall, they pack a serious punch when it comes to the big events. But so do the Proteas, isn’t it? South Africa is making its third straight deep run in ICC events. After coming up short in the T20 World Cup 2024 final, they've got two more shots at glory this year - the ongoing Champions Trophy and the WTC Final later on. They're looking formidable heading into this match after decisively beating England. While their Australia game got washed out, they've been impressive in their two completed league matches. Like New Zealand, South Africa's batting lineup is clicking across the board. Rickelton has notched a century, while the middle order has been rock solid. Markram and van der Dussen have consistently delivered, with van der Dussen posting back-to-back fifties. Then there's Heinrich Klaasen - missed the opener with a minor injury, but his return adds serious firepower to their batting.

Squads:

South Africa
Squad: Ryan Rickelton, Temba Bavuma(c), Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen(w), David Miller, Marco Jansen, George Linde, Wiaan Mulder, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, Corbin Bosch, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tony de Zorzi

Spectators to get free Iftar during Champions Trophy semi-final in Lahore

Cricket fans attending the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 second semi-final between New Zealand and South Africa at Gadaffi Stadium, Lahore will be treated to a free Iftar as part of special arrangements for spectators during the holy month of Ramadan.

Fans with valid match tickets can avail Iftar box containing dates, juice, and a mini pizza.

The initiative aims to enhance the match-day experience for attendees observing fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.

In addition to the free Iftar, various food items and beverages will be available for purchase at the stadium’s food stalls.

The much-anticipated semi-final match is set to commence at 2:00pm with Iftar scheduled for 6:05pm.

The PCB’s decision to offer free Iftar underscores its commitment to accommodating fans and creating a more inclusive and enjoyable atmosphere at the stadium.

South Africa will re-embark on an agonising quest for their first piece of ICC silverware since 1998 when they face New Zealand in Wednesday's semi-final of the Champions Trophy in Lahore.

The pair have faced each other in the 50-over format just twice since 2019 — most recently in Lahore in a Tri-Series fixture on February 10.

South Africa batted first and posted 304 for six, but their inexperienced bowling line-up could not contain the New Zealanders, who won by six wickets with eight balls to spare.

South Africa will pack much more of a punch in the bowling department this time round, with fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen as well as wily spinner Keshav Maharaj in their attack.

South Africa have reached the semi-finals or finals of ICC tournaments on 13 occasions across both limited-overs formats and only have the 1998 Champions Trophy title to show for it.

They made the semi-finals of the 50-over World Cup in 2023 but lost to Australia, and the final of last year’s T20 World Cup, where they lost to India despite seeming certain victors.

They will also play in the final of the World Test Championship against Australia at Lord’s in June.

New Zealand’s record is not dissimilar. Their only ICC limited-overs tournament win came in the 2000 Champions Trophy, and there have also been several near misses down the years.

South Africa have called up spinning all-rounder George Linde as cover for Aiden Markram, who hurt his hamstring in the seven wicket win over England in their final pool game.

Linde arrives in Lahore on Tuesday night, so is highly unlikely to feature on Wednesday. His selection as a travelling reserve may be more looking ahead to a possible final against India on a slower track in Dubai on Sunday.

*UPDATE*

Aiden Markram has passed his fitness test and is available for selection for the semi-final against New Zealand on Wednesday at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Just like WT20 after IND, RSA looks the second best dominant team. RVD, Stubbs, Miller, Klassen, now Rickelton, too many good players to have very few ICC trophies.

Let’s end the Pakistan leg of the tournament on a high.

Gaddafi is a beautiful looking sports complex after the renovations. The drone shots look absolutely stunning and it’s already among the top venues now in the subcontinent and add to it the wonderful Lahori fans it becomes a place to be.

Time to support cricket.
I hope Lahoris fill the stadium today. They really should send a clear message today that they stand firm with the cricket team.

Battle of chokers here. I think Kiwis might win this one and they might choke in final again...LOL

South Africa can't chase in knockout matches. But chasing at the Lahore is easy because of dew and flat pitch .

So advantage NZ but yea anything can happen. Hopefully no one sided match.

Ricky Ponting predicts winner of second semi-final at Champions Trophy

ICC Hall of Famer Ricky Ponting has revealed his prediction for the second semi-final between South Africa and New Zealand at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

South Africa are aiming to reach a third ICC final in the space of a year when they take on New Zealand in Lahore on Wednesday in the second Champions Trophy semi.

Having not only qualified for the ICC World Test Championship final, to be played mid-year, along with their run to the 2024 T20 World Cup decider, the Proteas are making a habit of getting to the business end of major cricketing events.

What stands in their way of locking in yet another appearance in a decider is a New Zealand side stacked with talent. It’s a clash of two cricketing heavyweights, currently both inside the ICC’s ODI Rankings top five.

It’s a match-up that’s almost too close to call, but ICC Hall of Famer Ricky Ponting has weighed in on how he predicts the Champions Trophy semi-final will unfold.

Quizzed by Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review Podcast*,* Ponting said he is expecting the Proteas to continue their unbeaten tournament run, which so far includes two powerful wins over England and Afghanistan (their contest with Australia in the group stage was washed out).

“They've got a good side, South Africa,” he said.

“If I look at both the sides, I think there's just a little bit more class in that South African line-up. (Kagiso) Rabada looks like he's going well, Marco Jansen took three wickets in his last game.

“(South Africa bat) deep, (they have) an opener that is in really good form in Ryan Rickelton and a strong middle order.

"So I just think they might just have a little bit too much power for New Zealand.”

Ponting did note, however, that if the Black Caps overcome the Proteas, it’ll be off the back of their knack for finding solutions.

“They just find a way,” he said.

“They deserve to be there and they'll be hard to beat again.”

Glenn Phillips' fielding is central to that point, having already proven to be a difference-maker multiple times in the Champions Trophy. He took yet another extraordinary catch against India on Sunday – the wicket of Virat Kohli, no less.

“It's about the moment as well, it's about who it is, it's about the time in the game,” he continued.

“When it's a catch like that against the opposition team's best player, or when you can take a catch like that to get rid of Virat, then that has more of an impact than it does if you're taking that catch against one of the tail-enders. To take a catch like that, that can be game changing. And I think that's why we all work so hard on our fielding.”

South Africa’s semi-final clash with New Zealand in Lahore gets going on Wednesday, at 2pm local time.

I think South Africa are the more confident and overall strong side going into this match. The only reason why im sticking with NZ is because in recent years they have shown bit of swagger in these kind of matches , more than South Africa. Guys like Philips are absolute dawgs. If the better team is to win tonight it’s got to be South Africa.

That will set up the revenge match for the last ICC Tournament.

I like how the top teams keep meeting each other

Only a freak kind of individual performance can take SA to final, for instance a 80 balls 150 from Klaasen, otherwise Kiwis are a much stronger side.

But both teams will be disappointed that the final is not been played on the good wickets in Pakistan lol.

No stress match

Don’t mind SA winning

Don’t mind NZ winning

Both are gonna lose to India in Dubai

New Zealand have won the toss and have opted to bat

Teams:

South Africa
(Playing XI): Ryan Rickelton, Temba Bavuma(c), Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen(w), David Miller, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi

New Zealand (Playing XI): Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham(w), Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner(c), Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, William ORourke

NZ batting first. South Africa nearly out. Might have to eat my words later but Saffers are poor chasers and the worst of the lot while chasing is Rassie Van der Dussen .

Biggest mental midget in this side.

South Africa cricket was thought to be on a decline a while back but they are recently always in the mix in ICC tournaments across formats.

Pakistan is hosting a ICC event's Semifinal after 29 years but where is crowd?

Hopefully they will comes as game progress

:kp

No crowd for the semi final. And then people complain about Dubai games.

Dubai games have saved this tournament from being absolute farce

Agree Bhai but 23 feb or kal ki tareh Match ke bad hide ni hona jo bhi result ho :kp
I never hid, I was here all day yesterday even congratulating you guys and calling out sweeper for toxic posts. However, this is the end of the road for India. You are an average team. SA will smash your spinners and NZ will smash you with their spin. Tulla Rohit and co will not be let off.

What a shots . three boundary in a over by Rachin Ravindra.

@Rana This is batting of highest order unlike Tullebaaz player's

So pleasing to the eye .

:kp

Head to head record of Last 10 odi between Both team's

South Africa -5
New Zealand - 5

No favourites or underdog in This match. Proper contest .

:kp

Limit the damage as much, keep it under 320. It’s going to be high scoring as the wicket looks a belter. A proper highway.

Pakistani local fans have seen these two play 4 times now in the last month and half. It kind of gets borinf seeing the same two play so many times. Ideally if this match was between Aus and England, it would’ve been packed by now as its the last match of the CT25 there.

Poor turn out so far.

Hope it is a full house by half time.

If not, an absolute disgrace it would be.

Doubt the ICC will ever award Pakistan an ICC event given the poor Stadium facilities, rains, washouts and the lack of crowd turnout.

Pakistan does not have the same craze of Cricket anymore unlike India, Australia, England, South Africa where you usually get sold out crowds

It’s a serious question now.

The appetite for cricket in Pakistan isn’t as much as the talk is.

Pakistani fans talk a lot but do not walk the talk in actually filling the stadiums.

Pathetic

The interest was lost the day Pak got knocked out.
Now it is just the formalities.
