Fisher earns maiden Test call up for Zimbabwe

Northern Districts pace bowler Matt Fisher has been called up to the BLACKCAPS for the first time as part of the 15-strong squad for the two Test tour of Zimbabwe later this month.

Widely regarded as one of the fastest bowlers in the country, the former New Zealand Under-19 representative has taken 51 First Class wickets at an average of 24.11 across 14 matches.

Fisher has been contracted to Northern Districts since 2018 when he began his recently completed Bachelor of Laws at Otago University. He played a key role early in the associations’ victorious 2024/25 Plunket Shield campaign, taking 14 wickets at 17.71 across just three matches, before being sidelined by injury.

BLACKCAPS head coach Rob Walter said Fisher’s pace was a valuable asset.

“Matt’s someone we’re really excited about,” said Walter.

“He’s one of the fastest bowlers in the country and we think he’s got an X-factor.

“We’re blessed to have a large number of strong fast bowlers in this country and we’re looking forward to adding Matt into that mix now, giving him a little bit of touring experience and a taste of what it means to be part of the BLACKCAPS.”

Red-ball captain Tom Latham will lead a largely settled squad on New Zealand’s first Test tour to Zimbabwe since 2016.

Fisher’s opportunity comes during a transitional period for the BLACKCAPS Test bowling attack, following the departure of veteran Tim Southee, and the emergence of Wellington duo Nathan Smith (two Test caps) and Ben Sears (one Test cap), alongside uncapped Otago Volts quick Jacob Duffy.

Sears was ruled out of the white and red-ball tours of Zimbabwe with a side injury which will require a further two to four weeks recovery, while Kyle Jamieson made himself unavailable as he awaits the birth of his first child.

Kane Williamson also made himself unavailable as he manages his playing commitments, while Michael Bracewell was unavailable due to his commitments at The Hundred - which was previously agreed and factored into his NZC central contract.

Walter said he understood and respected the decision of both players.

“Kane and Michael were up front with New Zealand Cricket about their availability for this tour during the contracting process.

“While all Test matches are hugely special and important, the fact these Tests aren’t part of the ICC World Test Championship did influence the discussions on this occasion.

“We will obviously miss their talent and class, but it allows an opportunity to others and we’re lucky to be able to call on the likes of Ajaz and Henry who are both proven performers at Test level.”

The remainder of the squad mirrors that which took part in the home Tests against England, with additional recalls of specialist spinner Ajaz Patel and batsman Henry Nicholls.

Patel’s last outing with the BLACKCAPS was a Player of the Match performance (5-103 and 6-57) in the historic three-nil sweep over India last November.

Left-handed Nicholls returns to the Test squad for the first time since December 2023, bringing 56 Test caps of experience and nine Test hundreds to his name.

Matthew Fisher’s first-class record is quite promising.

51 wickets in just 14 matches at an average of 24.11 shows he has the potential to be a consistent red-ball performer, especially with his ability to take 4-fors and 5-wicket hauls

For the Zimbabwe Test series, his red-ball skills should serve New Zealand well if conditions offer some seam movement.

I like to see Conway, Mitchell or any other batsman toppling Lara's record. Zimbabwe are anyway slated to play eleven test matches this year. In any match I like to see someone making quadruple ton.

Yes. I would love to see it too. Not because I am anti-Lara but because I like it when records are broken. :inti

I think Kiwi batters are likely to go for it if they get chances. Not everyone is a cuck like Mulder.

Zimbabwe name squad for New Zealand Tests

Zimbabwe Cricket has announced a 16-man squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against New Zealand, scheduled to be played at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

The first Test will take place from 30 July to 3 August, with the second following from 7 to 11 August 2025. There are four changes to the Zimbabwe side that featured in the recent Test series against South Africa.

Ben Curran, who missed the South Africa matches due to a hand fracture, returns to the fold after regaining full fitness. He is joined in the squad by Sikandar Raza, Roy Kaia and Tanunurwa Makoni, with the quartet of Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Prince Masvaure, Wessly Madhevere and Kundai Matigimu making way.

In a further boost, Brian Bennett, who missed part of the South Africa series after suffering a concussion, is back and, as a result, Dion Myers, who had been drafted in as cover, has been left out.

The team will be led by Craig Ervine, with experienced campaigners Sean Williams and Blessing Muzarabani providing key support in the batting and bowling departments respectively.

The upcoming series will mark the first Test meeting between Zimbabwe and New Zealand since July-August 2016, when the visitors claimed a 2-0 series win at the same venue in Bulawayo.

Bracewell to replace Phillips for first Test in Zimbabwe

BLACKCAPS batting allrounder Michael Bracewell will replace the injured Glenn Phillips for the first Test against Zimbabwe.

Bracewell was not considered in the original squad due to his commitments with The Hundred overlapping with the two-Test series in Bulawayo.

BLACKCAPS head coach Rob Walter said Bracewell is a strong replacement for Phillips.

“Glenn’s injury provided a gap in the Test squad and Michael is the closest like-for-like replacement,” said Walter.

“Michael’s experience and skillset will be a great asset and allows us to keep the same balance of the team.

"Given he's here with the T20 squad and his availability aligned for the first Test, we’re using the opportunity to include him in the squad.

"We’ll get through the first Test and then we’ll make a decision whether we’ll replace him for the second Test."

Bracewell will depart Zimbabwe after the conclusion of the first Test and join the Southern Brave ahead of their first game.

New Zealand name new Test skipper following Latham injury

All-rounder Mitchell Santner becomes the 32nd player to lead New Zealand men's side in Test cricket.

Regular New Zealand captain Tom Latham was ruled out of the first Test against Zimbabwe due to a shoulder injury. In his absence, white-ball skipper Santner will lead the side.

Latham sufferd the injury while fielding in a domestic T20 game in England, and hasn't been deemed fit enough to feature in the playing XI. But the left-handed top-order batter will continue to remain with the squad, with the hope that he regains full fitness ahead of the second Test match against the Chevrons.

Santner, who has 1066 runs and 74 wickets from his 30 Tests, assumes the role fresh off a T20I Tri-Series victory in Harare where the Black Caps remained undefeated in the group stage into the finals.

Rob Walter, New Zealand head coach, expressed his disappointment for Latham but backed Santner to do well.

“It’s never great when you lose your captain (Tom Latham), who’s a world-class opening batter and a great team man, but that said we’re going to work really hard to have him available for the second Test.

"We’ll continue to assess and see whether a replacement player is necessary, but at this stage we are hopeful that he'll recover in time.”

“Mitch (Santner) did a wonderful job with the T20 squad in this recent series.Whilst the format is different, he certainly has the respect of the players and will be supported by some highly experienced Test cricketers, so I trust that he’s going to do a great job.”

Test Series Schedule:

1st Test, July 30-August 3, Bulawayo

2nd Test, August 7-August 11, Bulawayo

ZC adds Taylor to squad for second Test against New Zealand

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) is pleased to announce the addition of Brendan Taylor – one of the country’s most accomplished cricketers – to the national squad for the second Test match against New Zealand, scheduled for 7-11 August 2025 at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

He became available for selection following the completion of a three-and-a-half-year suspension imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC), after he accepted responsibility for breaching both the ICC Anti-Corruption Code and the ICC Anti-Doping Code.

Since then, Taylor has undergone a thorough rehabilitation programme and has consistently demonstrated a sincere commitment to personal growth, accountability and restoring trust.

ZC Managing Director Givemore Makoni has welcomed his return, describing it as a story of redemption and a source of inspiration for Zimbabwean cricket.

“Brendan has endured an incredibly difficult chapter in his life and shown genuine remorse, coupled with a powerful determination to make things right – not just for himself but for the good of the game in Zimbabwe,” Makoni said.

“He has worked tirelessly behind the scenes, remained disciplined throughout his rehabilitation and has now rightfully earned his place back in the national setup.

“We’re happy to see him in a good space again. His experience, skill and passion for the game will bring immense value to the team.”

A veteran of 34 Test matches since making his debut against Sri Lanka in May 2004, Taylor boasts an impressive record that includes six Test centuries and 12 half-centuries.

With 9 938 international runs across formats, he ranks as Zimbabwe’s third-highest run-scorer.

His 17 international centuries are the most by any Zimbabwean player.

Before his hiatus, Taylor was in strong form in the longest format, recording scores of 92, 81 and 49 in his last three Test innings.

His reintegration into the national setup began ahead of the ongoing first Test against New Zealand, where he was invited to train with the squad.

Reflecting on his journey back to international cricket, a visibly emotional Taylor expressed deep gratitude for the support he has received from ZC, team-mates and technical staff.

“I certainly did think it was all done, but here I am – and it’s an overwhelming feeling of gratitude,” he said.

“I have to pinch myself a little to realise that I’m actually here. I’ve been soaking it all up and embracing every moment. It’s just been a really nice integration.

“The last year and a half has certainly been dedicated to my return. I’ve put in an immense amount of work – from fitness to the technical side to diet – and I’m feeling a lot leaner, fitter and mentally stronger. That’s only been possible through sobriety.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this journey on my own, just rebuilding the blocks, and I feel in a wonderful space.”
