Who will lead Australia in the three formats?
I know that Paine has been made captain for the 4th test but it's most probably a short term solution, who will Oz's pick to lead the side? :shh

I personally think in test they will pick someone who wasn't even in the squad to make it clear to cricketing world that they selected guy wasn't a part of this incident? or if they go with someone in the squad who will he be? I would like to see Mitchell Starc lead them in Tests.
For Limited overs i personally would love to see Glenn Maxwell lead the side he is my favorite Australian cricketer and has been since he nailed BB for 30 runs in 2014.

Now that Smith is out, Maxwell can get a regular spot in the team. But he's not captaincy material. Neither is Starc or Paine. I think they will bring Bailey back to make sure they have continuity until WC for ODIs.

Finch will Captain the limited overs team.

Paine will Captain the test team for a few years.

All of them are generally big imbeciles but maybe after this one of them will behave and lead with a bit of pride / honour, they need a Misbah sort of leader right now

I mean no offence, but you really don’t get it.

Many of us in Australia believe that the “leadership group” whom Smith originally confessed to being involved included Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon.

Cricket Australia has clearly decided that it needs the bowlers to have a viable team, so it has exonerated the bowlers whom Smith implicated, but I can’t imagine any of them being given a leadership position going forward.

And besides, after taking 3-304 in the last two Tests Mitch Starc was on the verge of being dropped until the three batsmen were sent home.

A big part of the problem was that Steve Smith might have been the most senior player, but he had the leadership qualities of a box of tissues.

Cricket Australia now needs a real leader on the pitch. The question was whether to go with Tim Paine - who if he’d been fit would have got the job in 2015 after Clarke - or skip a generation and go to Mitch Marsh.

But going back to Wellington 2016, Mitch Marsh was the beneficiary of suspicious reverse swing. He can’t get the job until Cricket Australia can be sure that Dave Warner won’t expose earlier ball tampering or wider involvement.

Whereas Paine has the advantage of not being in the team until November 2017.

Has Paine had any prior captaincy experience?

If so, is he a great strategist or leader of men?

All of the above.

He made his debut in the same Test against Pakistan as Steve Smith, and until his awful finger injury the following year it was universally expected that Paine would get the captaincy by the middle of the decade.

He has the strength of character and toughness of Graeme Smith, the tactical imagination of Michael Clarke, the intelligence of Mike Atherton or Nasser Hussein and the popular personality with his teammates of AB De Villiers or Tim Southee.

And it comes naturally to him. He’s the one who manhandled Dave Warner out of trouble and up the stairs at Durban. While the other Aussies were working out what was going on, Paine was acting decisively.

He’s an incredibly impressive man. The only problem is that his batting is only Sarfraz Ahmed quality and not Quinton De Kock or BJ Watling quality.

Considering Australia Cricket’s current situation, they could do with a Sarfraz-like-captain.

They are similar as players, but personality-wise Sarfraz is like a Javed Miandad-style Sergeant Major, whereas Paine is a more sophisticated, diplomatic leader.

So Paine is more Imran Khanesque?

For that, he needs a Miandad to help steer the ship.

I do not see any suitable candidate for that role.

Maxwell will likely captain T20I team and Paine will lead ODI and Test team for now

They are not gonna make a bowler captain considering the injuries and rotation.

Paine is one fine leader of men but it will depend a lot upon how the players respond considering the culture they have been brought up in under Leahman and Smith

I'm struggling to see anyone with a cricketing brain or even a normal brain. Starc is a terrific bowler but he has never stuck out as a leader. Paine, the Marsh bros etc just aren't big enough personalities to command a dressing room. Khawaja seems a cool head but his recent performances just aren't consistent enough, so can he even keep a place in the side let alone captain it?

Lyon might be the only test choice left.

In ODIs, who cares, they dont even know what their best side is let alone their best captain.

Reminds me of how Lee Germon was plucked out of domestic obscurity captaining Canterbury by Glenn Turner after an ill-disciplined tour of SA which led to Ken Rutherford being sacked. It led to the somewhat bizarre situation in which a player made his debut as test captain. The players never took to Germon though, whose biggest contribution was a rollicking knock as pinch hitter at Chennai against Australia in the World Cup. Paine, of course, is a much superior cricketer.

Finch will Captain the limited overs team.

Paine will Captain the test team for a few years.

Maxwell should captain the limited overs team, it will be so satisfying seeing smith play under maxwell after all the jibes smith has taken on maxwell when he was captain

Who should be the captain & vice captain of Australia in shorter formats ?

With Steven Smith out of the picture, who should be the captain & vice captain of Australia in shorter formats ?

Name your choice and reasons.

Travis Head ?
Aaron Finch ?
Tim Paine ?
Or anybody else ?

Aaron Finch should be permenant captain (don't know why he was dumped previously).
Travis Head will be ideal deputy for Finch as he is young and has experience of captaining state side.

Some sensible points there. Cheers Junaids. Agree wrt Paine and the leadership group.

Any chance of Clarke making a comeback? Or was that an emotional outburst?
