Opening ceremony of ICC world cup has been cancelled

The ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 will not be having any opening ceremony as decided by the host nation – Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This will be the first time in many editions of the ODI World Cup that there will be no official opening ceremony preceding the opening fixture – the clash between defending champions England New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

Hein?

Cancelling the opening ceremony but will organise closing ceremony before Pakistan and India clash? Which clash? The final? ;)

What an embracement for India and the BCCI.

Going back in history, the opening ceremony was conducted in eden gardens for 1996 World Cup which damaged the newly laid pitch partially. Cut to 1996 semifinal ind vs SL, India failed to chase on a crumbling pitch.

I aint sure if the current ceremony was planned on an existing ground/pitch.

This WC seems to have been an inconvenience for India more than anything.

They’d rather be cashing IPL cheques over hosting meaningless bilaterals like the World Cup.

If only we could allow those countries to host who’d actually appreciate it.

What kind of a clown show is this ? Cancelling the ceremony two days before the tournament starts lol.

But I thought India was the superpower in the cricketing world? Lol can't even host a ceremony. Embarrassing stuff.

I guess they'll save it for the next IPL.

I think this may be signs of a waning interest/support for the 50 over format. Or maybe just in India? I am guessing it is already not a big deal in Aus. and Eng. Maybe even NZ.

Is this the last ODI WC which receives this much hype? Is it going to go on decreasing trajectory from here on? Is the T20 WC going to become the big deal?

There is too much cricket so I agree with the MCC here.

I still cant fathom how they scheduled a premier cricketing event - the asia cup as a warm up for the WC.

Imagine for example India lose to Sri Lanka in the final of the WC, what will be the point in them being asian champions?

Interest is waning because the format is milked to death.

India v Aus and England V NZ were also completely pointless series.

The ironic part of this is the complete lack of interest in Tests in certain countries or even in places like Australia when Windies toured does not seem to affect the opinions of the cricket experts.

Complete dishonesty.

No point in all these discussions now as cricket with all those wrong decision has become a very confusing game.

I still remember the rules were so easy.

One ball for 50 overs.

15 overs PP two fielders inside that's it.

Old ball use to posses challenges and it was really good. I don't know how many times we can enjoy 300+ matches all the time nowadays.

The demise of ODI cricket started after the ICC started tinkering with the rules around 2012. The format I loved so dearly has been ruined. Now an one dimensional idiot can average 45 with the bat.
Powerplay 3 used to be such a fun concept. It added a totally different dimension to the game. The 2 new ball thing killed off whatever reverse swing was left.

The ICC wanted high scoring games, and that must be the reason why they introduced the rule of 2 new balls per innings. And thanks to that, the format has gone down the drain.

Perhaps the format needs tweaking again. Go back to basics? One ball?

There has been a lot of discussions on reviving tests. But here we are discussing the decline of ODI's on the eve of it's biggest showcase.

Don't think any of the rules would be revised back to previous ones. They wouldn't have changed them in the first place if that were the case.

Thank Goodness they haven't done anything drastic with the Test format apart from a few like pink ball Tests, day/night Tests, etc which doesn't really impact the format much. As a result things have mostly remained the same in the Test format. Scoring 500 batting first is still difficult, chasing 200 in the 4th innings is still difficult, batting on the 5th day on a pitch still remains incredibly difficult, scoring double hundreds/triple hundreds for players still remain difficult, averaging 50 for a batsman is still difficult. And most of all, home advantage still exist.

Is every tournament including the world cup just an excuse to have a Pak India match now lol. Basically richest board on earth is saving all the fancy production value, fireworks and bollywood numbers for the Pakistan match. Trust me I'll be first to say our mediocre team does not deserve this.

It has stopped being about sports.

sorry but this is absolute shambles from BCCI. No opening ceremony for a WC ?? Why cant they do it the evening before ? A closing ceremony? Who the heck will watch ?

Very very fishy.

What happened to all the riches of India and BCCI? India is desperate to announce itself on the global stage, and while they already have for the wrong reasons, this was a chance to redeem themselves and one would have thought that India would put on a great show!

Sounds to me like BCCI is running on reserves, which might explain why they are desperate to play Pakistan for the revenues. Then there is the point that Cricket is not a global sport, but a colonial sport, so putting on a show for about 10 nations is not in their interests. Then of course there is the Geopolitical situation between Canada and India, which remains a humiliation for India.

I still do not understand how a closing ceremony can be planned before the Pakistan vs India game. Unless the article in the OP has the wrong title, or this is an inference to the final! :)

And they didn't want to travel to Pakistan but happy to host this mess of a tournament. Cricket should be governed by SENA so it wouldn't get reduced to this.

BCCI being BCCI, the worst cricket board award should go to them...or maybe they're the best? Because on a personal level I have always found the opening ceremonies to be a bore.

I guess super safe secular India couldn't provide safety on yet another day.

Has been a very poorly organized WC so far... And it is yet to begin.

Looking at that seats picture, it was all over social media yesterday, I'm really scared because I've got Pak- SL game tickets and if these guys don't clean up, then I'm in trouble.

Please send pictures. We need to see the ground realities of what fans like yourself are dealing with, as opposed to Rajdeep's nonsense of "India has best cricket stadiums in the world with facilities better than anywhere".

This comment deserves POTW honestly.

One reason for this might be the traveling of the teams. Not all the teams are staying at the same city or state.

According to reports:

So, what prompted BCCI to make this abrupt change? Several factors appear to have influenced this decision. Firstly, the practicality of hosting an opening ceremony just a few hours before the first match has been questioned. With matches scheduled to commence at 2 PM IST, there simply wouldn’t be enough time to organize and execute a full-fledged event of this magnitude.

Furthermore, the spectacle of fireworks and laser displays, typically associated with opening ceremonies, wouldn’t have the same impact in broad daylight. The true essence and charm of such visual extravaganzas are best appreciated under the cover of darkness.

Regardless, something for the PCB to learn for PSL

there have been reports of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cancelling the grand opening ceremony. Notably, there will be a ceremony before the start of the India-Pakistan game on October 14. However, an official announcement is yet to come.
If Any Ceremony happen before india - Pakistan match then it's a disgraceful stuff from BCCI

Why the 'secular' thing frequently gets mentioned by Pak fans with no relevance to the game of cricket at all?

Somewhat can understand taking jibe by super safe or money power etc. but what does secularism has to do here?

To put in perspective - why does Riyasat-e-madina, the Pak (pure), the Islamic leader of the world, the land of peace Pakistan still has to provide presidential security to visiting teams?
See, how all the adjectives here don't relate to the game of cricket. So why can't we keep discussion limited to cricket only?

Fair enough about the fireworks and the timing of the event however it will be unjustified if any event like this happens before Ind-Pak game.
Just like that reserve day for Ind-Pak game only in Asia cup.

Why have the ceremony a few hours before a match and not a few days? This would allow all teams to be present and enough time head back to the cities to start their WC campaign.

There was a grand opening ceremony in 2011 CWC which was hosted by Bangladesh. Mind you, the opening ceremony was a few days before the first game and it was an absolutely grand event held at night. You don't need to have an opening ceremony on the morning of the game, that is not how it works in cricket.

Because India claims to be a secular state...is that difficult to understand?

No one claims Pakistan to be a bastion of Islam but what has that got to do with BCCI crapping their way out of an opening ceremony? Something even the West Indies could produce lol

Hardly anyone in the stadium on the opening game of the World Cup...no opening ceremony and the host country not playing the first match either...well done BCCI! Shows you can have all the money on the world but still have that third world mentality and organisation skills...

Why didnt they have an Indian match at the start and then do a quick ceremony?

Exactly, typically the host nations play the first game.

One thing is for certain, the stadiums are not ready for service. Also the rescheduling of matches, especially the Pak vs India encounter, confirms India is not ready, let alone fit, to host the WC.

You took all the efforts to write just for the sake of reply and still ended up putting the same irrelevant post.

If you can't comprehend properly please ask some 10 years old kid to read my post and he'll explain you. Though I suspect the result will still be same. Lol

I have heard that the dates and schedules are dictated by hindu astrologers.

There will be an opening ceremony on 14th before India vs Pakistan match featuring Ranveer Singh, Asha Bhonsle, Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal.

With all the money and stadiums bcci have but still they can't fix all these issues what a terrible host

No big deal to be honest. The problem with opening ceremonies is that unless they are done well they can become quite cringe and an embarrassment in themselves. Personally I wouldn't have bothered watching it if they had one.

Thats pretty weird. First the hosts not playing the opening game is weird and now opening ceremony after a week and half of tournament? BCCI and ICC are unnecessarily trying to milk the Indian-Pakistani rivalry here.

Nothing official yet from BCCI but rumours are some big events lined up for Indo-Pak contest. There will be 130 thousand people in stadium with billions watching across the globe. No more hotels etc available on that day in the city of Ahmedabad and many people would be commuting from neighbouring states. BCCI want to organize the cultural event on that day and not in an empty stadium like today. I know its unfortunate but it is as it is. Pakistani fans should be happy that BCCI is giving their team preferential treatment.

I can understand if this happened with a non Big 5 board but for a cricketing financial superpower to show such incompetence holding such a grand event at home is disgraceful

For a country which spews so much hatred at Pakistan and refuses to play them outside of tournaments, there's a lot geared towards the Pakistan match...feels like the whole tournament is aimed that way.

I can only hope for rain on the cringe fest. They’d probably have 3 reserve days just in case. Pathetic BCCI with their shenanigans.

What happened to the world's wealthiest cricket board that they failed to organize a proper opening ceremony for the World Cup.

Bro, am an American of Indian origin and I support Indian cricket team but your irrational support of bcci is ridiculous. Bcci doesn't care about us average fans. We are like throwaway trash to them. This was the most incompetent WC ever hosted. No opening ceremony like really?? And for a board that refuses to play Paknin bilateral series why is everything geared towards this indo pak match? Bcci saw the response to the indo pak t20 WC match in Australia and is milking it. I don't mind if they dknt play Pak for whatever reasons that are above my pay grade but having said that they are doing everything contrary to what they said.

Hyping up indo pak game now, opening ceremony before this game what a joke that is. If we dont care about Pak why give them the biggest platform and exposure?? Could have done it as an india eng opening game and grandiose ceremony and have the indo pak in some non decrepit small city. And the way bcci treats the fans , the indian supporters and fans who are the real heroes is nothing short of travesty. To support the crook bcci cronies is an insult and a slap on the indian cricket fans.

What a dillemma Indians have to live with.

On one hand they need to defend that Pakistan Vs India rivalry does not exist, on the other hand they also have to defend that a ceremony will take place before the Pakistan vs India match but its not because of high number of people that will be coming for the derby.

Jay Shah is a clown. As long as he is at the helm, nothing good happens in Indian cricket.

A grand inaugural ceremony is anticipated before the exciting clash of ICC World Cup 2023 between Pakistan and India scheduled on October 14 in Ahmedabad.

As per the details, the contest will kick off after an inaugural ceremony to entertain the audience where legendary Indian actors Amitabh Bachan and Rajnikanth will be seen at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as well as Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar will also grace the occasion.

However, singer Arjit Singh will cast a spell of his melodious voice.

The ceremony will start at 12:10pm (PST) and end by 12:40pm (PST).

Meanwhile, the match will start at 1:30pm Children will act as mascots for the game and will escort the teams to the ground.

The teams of Pakistan and India were rivals in cricket and had rich cricketing histories. Both teams beat each other in multiple matches. However, the upcoming match is also expected to garner a massive crowd.

In a bid to address the gap in the inaugural ceremony of the ICC World Cup, the BCCI decided to entertain the crowd.

All celebrities received golden tickets from BCCI for the match which foresees the presence of several VIPs from both countries.

According to Indian media, the Gujarat Cricket Association secretary Anil Patel said that Golden ticket-holders will also be present to watch the India vs Pakistan match

India so far faced only Australia and won by 6 wickets while Pakistan secured victory in both matches it had played with Netherlands and Sri Lanka.

Pathetic from BCCI to organise a event before India - Pakistan game .8 more team are here so it's very disrespect to them

Then why didn’t the tournament start with India vs Pakistan with opening ceremony before it?

This is pretty low from bcci, but our board is no better... we handed this propaganda/ tamasha moment to them on a platter ...no questions asked.

PCB instead of questioning they are going to attend the ceremony lol

Agree opening match should have been India vs Pakistan .
That way it would have got off to great start in terms of media hype, fan craze being the first match of the cwc on a Saturday Ind v Pak. Couldn’t have been a better way to start it off!

Nah i think its good that this match is at this stage. Let the hype build up a bit.

Opening match should have been hosts v reigning champs. That would have been a hell of a curtain raiser.

Arijit Singh is going to perform live

Some of my friends are attending , hope to see the visuals.

Start sports showing broadcast inside the stadium but I can't see any musical show going on has it been called off or something due to pressure

They are not televising it. as it's only for fans inside the stadium.

Saj you know these things better

Is it a special privilege to those who bought the wickets or maybe the broadcaster don’t have legal access to this extra event.

So Rohit Sharma was worried as well about that dew factor or is it just the strategy to chase?

Why was there no opening ceremony for this ICC ODI World Cup 2023? Now that India is in the final, they are doing the closing ceremony. Pathetic
