The Afghanistan Cricket Board on Sunday (August 20) announced that they would not be renewing Lalchand Rajput’s contract as the head coach of the national team. The former India opener and Mumbai captain, under whom Afghanistan attained Test status in June, confirmed the development to Wisden India, stating he had turned down the board’s proposal of having him work out of Kabul.

Rajput’s fears stemmed from Afghanistan having suffered a series of terrorist attacks in recent months, including a deadly blast in the diplomatic quarter near the German Embassy in Kabul , which claimed at least 90 lives and left more than 400 civilians wounded.

“The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) will not extend Head Coach Lalchand Rajput’s contract which is due to expire at the end of August this year,” read a release from the board. “ACB would like to thank Mr. Rajput for his satisfactory performance during his time as Afghanistan’s Head Coach. ACB is currently in the process of recruiting a new coach for the National Cricket Team.”

Rajput, who replaced Inzamam-ul-Haq as head coach in June last year, saw Afghanistan, along with Ireland, being handed Test status by the International Cricket Council following their impressive run in the Intercontinental Cup.

Afghanistan won six out of 10 limited-overs international series during his tenure, including a successful tour of the Caribbean, where they
beat Windies in an ODI to register their maiden win in the format against a full member nation other than Zimbabwe or Bangladesh.

The team also took part in an invitational
match against a Marylebone Cricket Club side which included the likes of Brendon McCullum, Kumar Sangakkara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul at Lord’s in July.

“They (ACB) wanted me to come to Kabul,” Rajput told Wisden India. “This is something I had told them earlier also – I cannot stay there, with the current security threats in the region. We have done so well and even got Test status. I was told that people are now asking why the head coach was not in Kabul, and that I should be there.”

The rising tension and attacks in Kabul led to an indefinite postponement of the fourth edition of Shpageeza, the franchise-based Twenty20 league that was scheduled to be played in Kabul in July.

“I told them that’s out of question, and that they can look for someone else,” added Rajput. “This was actually the only reason to part ways. They have got the National Cricket Academy in Kabul, so I told them it’s better to hire someone, maybe a local coach, who can stay there and look after the local boys. They want someone to look after their domestic players and eventually pick some of the boys (for the national team). I am not willing to risk my life for this, that’s the only reason why I will not be continuing with the role."

The ACB is undergoing a series of reforms, which has led to over 30 employees being sacked or made to switch positions over the past month and more. The developments within the board have even triggered a rebellion of sorts against Atif Mashal, the chairman, and Shafiq Stanikzai, the CEO, with some of the axed and existing members threatening to stop working under the current dispensation.

then why did you take this job

Some people are just soo ridiculous. Obviously, at some point he had to go to Afghanistan to coach the team properly.

I'm more surprised at ACB for not having a head coach in Afghanistan for in country training.

How many Pakistani coaches went there without giving these statements? Then we spat in our faces.

ACB deserve it! Cant believe some Pakistani players will go Afghanistan to play; they should boycott Afghanistan over their recent statement about Pakistan.

He had told them when he took the job that he wont stay in Kabul.

Who can blame him...

Safety is the most important thing. Credit to him for sticking to his original decision.

What do you mean? would you be willing to coach AFG if they pay you enough, the criteria for many here, & apologize in advance? Would you just move to Kabul with security threats, as they are today?

Why say yes to a job when you are not willing to go to Afghanistan. You can't do your job properly if you are only willing to be with the team under tours..

All their previeus coaches went and stayed in Afghanistan. Inzy, Kabir Khan, Andy Moles, Peter Anderson etc.

Anyway Lalchand was only hired to suck up to the previous BCCI chairman who advised ACB to get him. Sources said he was a puppet, a yes man without any real influence. So good ACB got rid of him.

My advice to ACB is if you are going to hire someone who is not willing to come to Afghanistan then you can as well hire a top coach from Australia.

I wouldnt bother taking the job

Acb needs to stop kissing up to others. Simple as that.

They started playing politics they ended up destroying their relationa with pcb and lost a coach.

Acb juat got its test status so they need to be morw wiser

You can't change conditions mid way.

If he said, he can't be there before the agreement, then has the right to back out.

Rajput has every right to stop coaching Afghanistan.

But he should not have said, "I am not willing to risk my life for Afghanistan". No need for that.

If he has said, he does not want to continue as coach, ACB would understand his predicament. No need to air out the reasons in public (especially when they are regarding security).

ACB should look for a better caliber coach than Rajput.

How can you be the coach of Afghanistan national team and not visit Afghanistan? Something seriously wrong in his decision making process.

Id rather blame ACB, because he had already put forward his condition before accepting job that he wont travel to Afghanistan. if ACB still goes ahead an appoint him and then later ask him to travel Afghanistan then its not his fault that he resigned. If anything its the Afghan board that have created the mess.
Rajput is doing what he said before accepting job. Im surprised how some folks are having a go at someone who is just looking after his safety.

It was an established condition in his contract.

Nothing wrong with his rejection.

It's the ACB's fault for hiring someone who doesn't fit their requirements.

I won't blame Rajput for that, he never agreed to go to Kabul, he is a professional coach not a commando soldier. Safety first.

I get he doesn't want to live there but how can he work for them and never visit Afghanistan. Isn't that a little absurd? This is cricket after all. Also sounds like the folks at ACB are clueless. How can you agree to a coach who wont step foot in your country? Neither of them seem smart.

With or without a coach Afghanistan Cricket is not getting anywhere fast. That is the real reason Rajput wants out, he would have had plenty of security in Afghanistan if he wanted to stay.

I think he signed up for the job knowing Noida, India is adopted home venue for Afghanistan. However, he did mentioned his pre conditions and to which ACB obliged, so he didn't backtrack or walked out on contract.

I get your point that it sound absurd, but then again ACB aren't in strong position to dictate terms. You also have to understand the ground realities in Afghanistan. Afghan forces aren't fully competent to tackle terrorism, its US/Nato that have brought somewhat stability. If and when US leaves Afghanistan, we can only imagine what would be the situation in Afghanistan. So, i guess its perfectly acceptable for a foreign coach to refuse to travel citing security issues.

Afghanistan are now a test playing nation and are expected to participate in ICC events in the years to come

Cricket is not exactly bursting at the seams with international teams, is it? Afghanistan will just be there to make up the numbers.

Security is a bigger factor than you think especially for a non Muslim

In that case Afghanistan should not be granted test status. No one would be inviting them as visitors.

I would back them to compete against BD SL WI Zim. They are probably better than Zimbabwe as we speak.

Not in my book they are not. Would put them on par with Scotland, UAE and Kenya.

Most thankless and ungrateful sports organization out there let alone a cricketing board. If these jobbers somehow qualify for WC 19 would love to thrash and put them in their place. Could rest Amir, Hasan, Ajmal etc and let some newbies like that ambidextrous bowler have a go at them and we will still win.
