What's new

On This Day: July 24, 2010 - Pakistan beat Australia in a Test after 15 years

What a bowling attack we had :(

It was a pretty disappointing summer as regards to the cricket but there was a sense of optimism that the youngsters would shine through.

Azhar Ali showing some real guts and spirit.

There was actually a period where Butt and Farhat were very successful opening for us at the top of the order ! People thought our opening dilemma was over.

I remember the collapse when chasing, real nail-biter of a finish

Lol yeah Farhat played well that day.

In all honesty it was our bowlers that destroyed the Aussies. :asif :amir

Amir to MJ will live long in the memory.

It was all looking so bright for the England series, sadly this was to be the peak of an eventually turbulent summer.

I still remember the finish of that match..typical Pakistani collapse. :yk

And yeah the rest of the players gave us all a serious heart attack on the final morning.

Sweet memories.........Farhat produced some quality shots and gave a solid start.....Should be recalled for test squad......

Credit where it's due ... Farhat helped us win both the games in England last year with his fifties. Well done Farhat.

I still remember the finishing of the match , typical Pakistani style .Thanks to Gul for winning shot ..

Johnson to Umar Gul, 1 run, That's it! Gul finishes it in style! Famous victory for Pakistan and boy have they made their fans work hard this morning. Gul finally ends the torture, crashing a full-blooded drive through covers and jumping in the air to celebrate!

That chase was horrible. Remember when they struggled to get the one run needed for victory and Gul driving uppishly past Hussey to hit the winning runs.

Farhat played fearlessly that innings.

It was a glorious moment when Gul stroked the cherry through the covers to seal victory. Great day that one.

Pakistans first "home" series in England after security concerns had ruled out any international cricket from being played in Pakistan. Shahid Afridi had been handed over the captaincy for the test side. Australia comprehensively beat Pakistan in the first test of the series by 150 runs. This led to Pakistan's skipper Shahid Afridi retiring from test cricket.

In comes, a 25-year-old, promising opening batsman as captain of Pakistans test team, Salman Butt. With overcast conditions in the morning at Headingley, Pakistan lost the toss, Australia chose to bat first. What happened in the next session of play, was going to re-write history books. Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir sent the Australians packing for a paltry score of 88, their lowest in 53 years.

What else could a new captain have asked for? As the match progressed, Pakistan tightened its grip, but this is Pakistan cricket, there has to be a twist somewhere. In the last inning, Pakistan was set 180 runs to win. Should have been a standard chase, but standard is not something associated with Pakistan cricket. 40 runs were needed to win the match, with 7 wickets in hand. On the 4th morning of the match, Pakistan lost 4 wickets in quick succession, leaving fans thinking, is Pakistan ever going to beat Australia? The man in the first innings, that was part of the demolition job that bowled Australia out for 88, had walked out to the crease. He made sure no more hiccups occurred and fittingly hit the winning runs. Pakistan had done it! They finally beat Australia, ending a drought of 15 years without a victory versus them.

Pakistans 1st inns bowling display was probably one of best seen in swinging conditions, the Aussie batsmen were made to look very amateurish during game. Asif in particular made the ball talk like a magician.

Agreed, that delivery to Johnson was as good as it gets. Seam and Swing. Asif was pure magic that whole tour, even though the memories were darkened towards the end. Still, remember him making Ponting and Clarke look like novices in that series. Great memories, wasted his talent, sadly.

Hell lot of memories are attached with that tour a story of what iffs, but that's the beauty of life, success feels more precious after such dreaded failures and mishaps, that tour was epic roller-coaster of feelings as Pak fan, some very best moments of our cricket and bowling folklore and some darkest days in our cricketing history.

I remember it like it was yesterday.First test series I had ever watched and I fell in love with test cricket.

Can remember watching the conclusion, Umar Gul driving the ball through the offside to give Pakistan the victory . Ahah good times. Love test match cricket.

I still remember the 2nd match that we won!

We were 140/3 going into the final day with only 40 needed to win. Most people were confident of an easy win but some, keeping in mind our batting reputation, were still fearful of a collapse!

The latter were proved to be right as we lost Azhar early on and also Umar Akmal and Kamran Akmal shortly afterwards. Umar Gul just got us over the line driving the ball through covers to win the game by 3 wickets!

I remember this test well- how time flies. Amir had Clarke out plumb lbw but Rudi (remember him?) didn't give it out for whatever reason. I remember feeling robbed and thinking Clarke would go on to score a century. Little did I know...

What a game this was. I thought we would bottle that small chase when we started collapsing and I think there was also some controversy regarding whether a catch was taken cleanly or not but when we won I just had a great feeling :)

Was in the UK at the time, had plans to go to the match but it didn’t materialize. One of my most favorite Test matches ever.

This should have been a 3/4 match Test series. Pakistan could have won the series in those conditions with Amir and Asif looking unplayable with the Dukes ball.

Salman’s captaincy was also impressive and that series saw the rise of Azhar Ali as a formidable Test number 3.

This whole tour was played in exceptionally bowling friendly conditions. It perhaps elevated the publics perception of how talented Mohammed Aamir was, ultimately it didn't matter too much as he threw his career down the drain anyway. Asif bowled like a magician too.

It was a wonderful feeling to win that match. After being constantly thumped by Australia the future looked bright, we were lead by a young captain and the bowling attack looked good. Umar Amin also debuted in this tour and then perhaps unfairly never played test cricket again.

This was the bowling squad for the subsequent series with England straight after this match.

Looking back, and what a motley crew we had assembled. They ended up becoming 3 fixers, a chucker ( but still a legend), one druggy, a bitter sports pundit, a sport minister and the legend that is Umar Gul.

I remember that Test. I saw it live.

Australia were bowled out for 88 on Day 1. Amir and Asif were brilliant.

Great win.

After that game, Pakistan cricket was never the same... Downfall after downfall.
