Pakistan face uphill battle for survival after Australia take a 300-run 2nd innings lead at Stumps on Day 3 of the 1st Test

Can we please have Shaheen back on the other end? A wicket or two before the end of play would be great.

Australia 2-10 in 10 overs, and my man Rana Faheem comes in to bowl short and wide rubbish to Steven Smith

Pakistan clearly need a massive overhaul. All of the rubbish from the past 4-5 years needs to be moved on.

That includes Babar and Shaheen who have not shown ANY signs of improvement or belonging at this stage as the so called greats of the game.

At this stage in their career’s, Boult and Kane were carrying New Zealand on their shoulders and making them a strong competitive force

Bowl 130 every ball

Square up to Warner for the cameras and social media

-Shaheen Shah Afridi
This ... 106 wickets in 26 Tests is not exactly being a beast , more hype than delivery . 284/2 now , guess they bat till Lunch day 4 & set a improbable 400 target in 5 sessions .

Replace Faheem with a proper fast bowler , Sarfraz with Rizwan and maybe, just maybe Imam with Saim for the next Test.

Lead has gone up to 285 now for Australia. With these 2 on wicket, it will increase further more.

Shaheen needs to have a lot of rest.

Babar just sucks bad. Against any top side.

Looks like Khurram has woken up the beast last innings

Long, long tour for Pakistan

It will take a special delivery to rid of these 2 batters. Not easy to get them out.

The test matches in Australia are just becoming ridiculous now and humiliating.

Stop touring Australia

They're trying something I suppose. But this short ball ploy would be more effective if these guys were bowling 140k.

Aamer Jamal bowling beautifully, definitely earned a spot for the rest of the series.

Jamal is bowling his heart out here. Good to see a bowler who is putting in some effort in the bowling.

Shaheen is fatigued and hasn't been at his best for quite a while.

Shaheen's SENA record in tests so far is, 26 wickets in 10 tests with avg of 40 and that includes his 9 wickets in 2 tests in Safrica

There comes a point where you can't just get away with plaudits for "effort"

These performances in Australia are nothing short of scandelous.

How can you play 15 test in Australia and get destroyed in all of them.

Imam can’t play off spin from over the wicket.

Useless batsman

Pretty sure the people criticizing Shaheen right now are not watching the match and only looking at the scoreboard. This is the best day of bowling he’s had in this tour so far. The opening spell was creating chances and right now he’s looking fast and dangerous.

Really the only bad spell he had was on opening day, hopefully now he has found his rhythm.

May be it is best to send Shaheen and Babar back to Pakistan as they are not interested in playing this test series in Australia.

Salman might get taken down at some point in this series but he's already bowled tidier in this Test than Yasir on his two tours of Australia.

By that logic we should send the Indian cricket team home every time there’s a knockout round because they never look interested in winning them.

Imam, Sarfraz and Fahim should be replaced in next Test.
This is Shan’s next big test. Does he have the cojones to defy status quo and break buddy culture to drop as needed, or will he let passengers get a free trip only until they have failed in 5-6+ series straight and he has no choice.

So then Babar and Shaheen should also be dropped??

I doubt they can drop Imam considering he top scored - but perhaps if he completely fails in the second innings. Sarfraz should clearly be replaced by Rizwan and maybe Mohammad Wasim Jr or Hasan Ali in for Faheem.

I expect better from Shaheen and Babar. Just this over alone should prove that he is not interested at all. Bowling around 128kph. What a joke. I would rather have players who are giving it all and playing for their country. May be not happy that Masood got the test captaincy

They wanna play the T20 series v New Zealand to get their fans riling up again

Ball didn't moved much in the last hour. But the pitch is showing some variable bounce. Tough times to come for Pakistan

Can't understand how Shan can talk about a positive brand of cricket yet play somebody who represents the antithesis of it.

I think all the pak think tank and players are expecting a drubbing but at least try and make one of the 3 tests competitive.

They have bowled well. It’s the batting

Fast and bouncy tracks and your batting like it’s a landmine

Play your cuts and pulls!

Faheem is such a weak link. 6 years of playing International debut and he has regressed even more.

No point in playing him. Pakistan are better off playing a Frontline bowler if you they don't have a pace All Rounder.

Will not be surprised if pak get bowled out within a session and half
Yea. Before this Test match I was wondering if Pakistan can stretch this game to Day 5. That will be a good start for this team. But they need to fight hard to do that.

Poorest day of the test that has cost them the game. They didn't exactly dominate at any stage before today but kept the interest for a draw at least.

For decades now we have still not found out how to bat in Australia. Such an overly negative approach that left us at least 80+ runs short of where the score should have been after just over 100 overs played. If you're not going to play out lt the day at least make use of the overs instead of going completely into a shell, it's too negative an approach even for a test situation.

A small victory is Shazad at least, the kid looks good and can hopefully bolster our pace stocks for many years to come

If we had Sharjeel Khan it would be raining Chukkaz and a lead of 300, would be a lead of 200 for Australia right now

Shan’s aim was to draw the Test from the start and the situation has presented itself. Jammal and Faheem will be expected to bat out of their skins to help save the Test.

Well thats expected as the pitch today offered plenty for the seamers. He is still struggling and not at his best due to fatigue, he needs a 3 month rest, which he will not get unfortunately.

I agree with that. I wish he had never been rushed back for the Asia Cup and the ODI WC, he looks like he never got the opportunity to fully recover. But I will say that today was the most rhythm I’ve seen him bowl with for a while.

We’d have to bat at least 4 sessions and the pitch is breaking up a bit. Don’t think that a draw is going to be possible here.

Australia ended the third day of Perth Test having attained a massive lead of 300 against Pakistan. Pakistan were bowled out for 271 in 101.5 overs, owing to a compelling performance by the Australian bowling attack led by Pat Cummins. Australia then rode on an undefeated partnership between Usman Khawaja and Steven Smith to gain a commanding lead at the close of play.

Pakistan resumed from their overnight score of 132-2 in 53 overs, trailing by 355 runs with night-watchman Khurram Shahzad and opening batter Imam-ul-Haq on the crease. Australian skipper Pat Cummins cleaned up the middle stump to dismiss Khurram, who walked back on just the third ball bowled in the day.

Babar Azam, the next batter in, could only manage 21 from 54 including two fours. He was caught behind on Mitchell Marsh’s bowling. Babar’s dismissal was a massive breakthrough in the game for Australia with the Pakistan scorecard reading 181-4 in 71 overs.

Imam was the next man to fall courtesy of a stumping off Nathan Lyon’s bowling. The left-handed opening batter was the highest scorer for the side with a gritty 62 from 199 deliveries, including four boundaries.

Mitchell Starc rattled the stumps in just the following over to dismiss Sarfraz Ahmed. The wicketkeeper-batter had a brief stay on the crease and walked back after scoring just three from six.

Salman Ali Agha and Saud Shakeel attempted to stage a recovery, collectively adding 35 runs to the total until Saud (28, 43b, 4x4s) was caught by David Warner on Josh Hazlewood’s bowling.

Salman (28 not out, 76b, 4x4s) was the last man standing as Pakistan lost three more wickets in quick succession. The visiting side was bowled out for 271 handing Australia a first-innings lead of 216.

Each of the Australian bowlers returned with at least a wicket each; Lyon remained the most successful of the lot, as he grabbed three to get to 499 Test scalps.

In Australia’s second innings, debutant Khurram landed two early blows to take out Warner – who went for a duck – and Marnus Labuschagne to reduce the home side to 5-2 in 7.2 overs.

Khawaja (34 not out, 106b, 1x4) and Smith (43, 72b, 3x4s, 1x6) stitched an unbeaten partnership that yielded 79 runs to take Australia to 84-2 at close of play, with their lead reaching a mammoth 300.

The fourth day’s play will resume at Perth Stadium from 0720 PKT.

Scores in brief:

Australia 487 all out, 113.2 overs (David Warner 164, Mitch Marsh 90, Usman Khawaja 41, Travis Head 40; Aamir Jamal 6-111, Khurram Shahzad 2-83, Faheem Ashraf 1-93, Shaheen Shah Afridi 1-96) and 84-2 (Steven Smith 43 not out, Usman Khawaja 34 not out, Khurram Shahzad 2-19)

Pakistan 271 all out, 101.5 overs (Imam-ul-Haq 62, Abdullah Shafique 42, Shan Masood 30; Nathan Lyon 3-66, Pat Cummins 2-35, Mitchell Starc 2-68, Travis Head 1-4, Mitchell Marsh 1-34, Josh Hazlewood 1-49)

Yawn. Why bother. I knew this was going to happen. Nothing changes. A nation that hasn't moved beyond 1999. Its like a timewarp. Nothing changes.

Pakistan missed Yasir Shah's batting ! Seriously what is the purpose having batsmen till 10 if the bowlers leak a lot of runs that too quickly. They were clearly one bowler short. You pick XI for 5 day match not 1st day.

Ask the Prof..a mediocre cricketer with s big mouth

This was fully expected the gulf in skill sets between the 2 teams is to huge .

On Labuschagne's finger injury (hit by Khurram Shahzad):

“It didn’t look pretty,” Australian opener Usman Khawaja told Fox Cricket during the drinks break.

“Marnus is a pretty tough character. When he takes his glove off, I get a little bit worried, because he’s a pretty tough guy.

“But I think he was alright.”

Speaking to reporters in the post-match press conference, Australian bowler Josh Hazlewood said he expected Labuschagne to undergo scans on his sore finger.

“He was with the physio for the last hour, just chatting through it,” Hazlewood explained.

“They were doing a few tests on the finger.

“I dare say there might be a scan tonight or tomorrow morning.

“He’s pretty sore, I think.”

The severity of Labuschagne’s injury is yet to be confirmed, but if he were unavailable for the upcoming Boxing Day Test at the MCG, West Australian all-rounder Cameron Green looms as his most likely replacement.

Fatigued from what?

Kasun Rajitha has bowled more deliveries than Shaheen Shah Afridi.

For the record since 2023 beginning

Broad 1716 balls
Cummins 1657 bals
Southee 1517 balls
Anderson 1310 balls
Starc 1289 balls
Henry 1176 balls
Robinson 1018 balls
Hazlewood 966 balls

.....

Naseem 616 balls
Boland 600 balls
Rajitha 594 balls
Shaheen 576 balls

Across Tests

Across the formats CUmmins/Henry/Starc/Southee are the only 4 that bowled more than 2000 balls since the year beginning. Cummins 2302 at the top.

Shaheen plays all 3 formats. He played in home Test series, Asia Cup, and World Cup. I say he is probably fatigued.

On one hand you have
Cummins
Have to think as a captain
Have to think about field placement
Have to think about bowling changes
Have to think about his bowling
Have to think and physically perform
And he is acing all that
On the other hand you have trundle Sheehan
Can't even think about six deliveries let alone planning... and he is given captaincy as a reward for failures .. wow

A very good chance to score big after 180/3 which was effectively 180/2 due to nigh watchman.

What a waste. Babar's dismissal was a very soft one and it turned the game.

Even including all formats Cummins has bowled 80 overs more. Besides bowling in tests is way harder than LOIs where your one spell doesn't last more than a few overs. Shaheen bowled mostly in LOIs. I don't understand this theory of "tiredness" lasting for more than 2 years. It doesn't take more than 48 hours for you to recover worst case. He never fully evolved as a bowler. He relies on glory balls all the time which he can do against lower ranked sides.

2020

51.60 avge vs England
42.83 avge vs NZ

2021
28.28 avge vs SA
16.40 vs Zimbabwe
11.27 vs West Indies
13.60 vs Bangladesh

2022
36.44 vs Australia
19.75 vs Srilanka
37.33 vs Srilanka

He raises his game only against Weak sides.

They have loaded their side with batting in order to eke out a draw. Their approach also symbolizes that. It is almost their whole goal is to somehow draw the Test match. That is the worst thing to do in Australia. These guys are too experienced and supremely fit. Even on a flat deck they can be relentless.

I thought 1 batsman dropping the anchor was fine, but entire team keep doing it for 70 overs was an overkill.

When all said and done, how you help your team to win or at least draw games in den of strong opposition defines your greatness. Pakistan has nothing to lose because stronger teams have come to Aus and got a thrashing. Seeing off the first 20 overs are good way to go, but need to score some runs.

This is a side that could not win a single Test against England/Australia/NZ at home forget about winning overseas. So they were serious under dogs here. That should have set their mind free. I think Shan Masood showed some intent. Probably others could have tried the same.

Normally, I am upset about losing a test match, but this Australian team are very likeable.

1. Beat India in the WC Final 2023
2. Khawaja has done more for Gaza/Palestine than any member of the Pakistan squad. PCB should be ashamed.

I am thinking of changing my support from Pakistan to Australia.

Yes, Shan Masood showed some intent to play bazzball technique.

Yah, I forget this fact. Pakistan first needs to start winning at home against good teams. It's really bad to not win single test in home season. I don't expect Pakistan to win in Aus, but giving a good fight will be something. Pakistan just folds in Aus.

Not surprised at all, Pakistan Test team has gone to the dogs, yet they are trying their level best to compete even a second innings score of 250 will be an achievement for Pakistan ,

Aussies are on top.

Leading by 300 runs with 8 wickets in hand.
Aussies have been on top since the game started.

Don't even think Australia have got out of first gear.

Expect some real big hundreds in the next few games and five or 6 wicket hauls for hazelwood/Cummings

Everyone knew the gap between Australia and Pakistan in Test Cricket. This series is a test wether Pakistan can show guts or not.

Australia has trapped us yet another time they will bat for 1½ session tomorrow and get lead to 520+ and declare, Pakistan then has to survive 130 overs which is an impossible task

Shambolic effort with bat, after the top 3 had set a good foundation, the rest look like rabbits caught in headlights. To get bowled out 200 behind when they should have been looking to bat all day was criminal

Look Pakistan were always going to be 200 + runs behind the aussies, even before the test started. But I think they could have easily gotten 100 runs closer to Australia by not picking this useless Faheem Ashraf. The only half decent fit spinner left in the team was uncle Noman Ali and they didnt pick him. Hasan Ali should have been picked as well. Mighty shameful!

Pakistan has to ensure at all cost that the test goes into day 5.
