Harmer has gone around the wicket to the right hander and made sure he is pitching the ball in line with the stumps and getting enough spin to bring the lbw into play.

Sajid not once went around the wicket to the right hander to try something different. Zero bowling iq

I agree with these sauces, but what’s his W/L record compared to the last Test captain at home ? Because at the bare minimum we should be building a fortress there….

Need a 100+ tuns partnership from Babar and Rizwan and then the rest to stretch the lead to a minimum of 200. That's Pakistan's chance.

South Africa have proven that they bat all the way down to number 11 and they have the measure of Pakistani spinners now. This pitch is no problem for their batsmen, no bumpy rides

I do agree that around 200+ could be tricky to chase but I don’t see how Pakistan can get the lead to 200+ now

Pakistan are just a very mediocre test team. Our spinners aren’t better than opposition and this pitch had enough support…

Given the quality of the Pakistani batting on display, I can't blame them, you can't prepare a outrank rank turner if you can't bat well on it

Also Nauman and Sajid too have gone missing at times when the pitch is conducive to spin. Everyone remembers the second test defeat to the West Indies in 2025 because of Warricans magical bowling, Pakistan's poor batting but people forget that Pakistan's spinner bowled poorly to the last two West Indies tailenders in the first innings and were extremely poor in the second innings where they allowed West Indies to score 244 runs which was criminal given the amount of assistance on offer to the spinners
 
It's been a good test match hasn't it.

This one is still open.

A good chance for Babar to make a legacy, tough test match runs in a back to the wall situation are what people remember from players.

And from South Africa, a chance to really prove why they are a champion side and managed to trump the opposition spin strategy with their own spinners.

Shan Masoods pathetic captaincy did not help. No spinner in the world can maintain consistent pressure when the captain habitually spreads the field and allows easy singles and where they have to bowl to a different batsman every two deliveries.

That said the bowlers haven't protested or argued with the captain to give them aggressive fields.

Markham on the other hand always had men around the bat to the Pakistani batsmen.
 
This Bangladesh mirpur like strategy relies a lot on winning the toss. Pakistan my go on to win the match. But teams are getting up to speed with this pakistans strategy. England next time will come in with 3 spinners. So will NZ.

I thought it was absolutely diabolical and crazy for Pakistan not to play a second pacer or a pace bowling all rounder.

No wonder Shaheen got exhausted and lost venom as his overs piled up. The team management did not even have a contingency plan on what will happen if the pitch does not turn as expected if they decide to go in with three specialist spinners

What can the captain do when rabadda is smashing down the ground he was doing clean hitting there was nothing really captain could do he had all the fielders at boundary rabadda still cleared them by distance it can happen that's how cricket is unfortunately.

Pitches were fine this series. Though weistindies series like dust bowls are pathetic ..

Yes good teams will counter the strategy and would win but at least on these pitches Pakistan have a chance.

1-1 vs SA otherwise would have been difficult

I think Shan Masoods test captaincy track record speaks for itself. In the two years he has had in charge which is a sufficient sample size, he has proven to be a bottler under pressure from an on field captaincy perspective.

Good captains don't exhibit body language of loosers and cry babies under pressure, they influence the game with their field placings and bowling changes or tactics.

Also the decision to play only one pacer in this test match which I was very nervous about badly backfired and as a result Shaheen was overbowled, tired, jaded and lost venom in the end. Playing an extra batsman made zilch difference in this game.
 
1 to 7 , there is not one consistent batsman in Pakistan lineup who can put up performances for 3 /4 innings in a row , on and off they are at the moment , henceforth the results also the same
 
Sajid khan has been truly disappointing this series. There is a case for him making way for Abrar next time we play a home test

Also Pakistan should try to bring in proper spin all rounders like Mubashir khan rather than 3 spinners or even Saim Ayub could have been handy.

Abdullah is a walking wicket either way and Saim would have contributed with the ball even if he failed with bat

If Pakistan decides to gamble with dry rank turners, then even spin bowling all rounders like Mohd Nawaz and Mohd Wasim Jr with his slinging action and batting ability will be useful.
 
I feel even Muhammad Nawaz would have been a good option. Shan should man up and move to open and we could have gotten Nawaz instead of Abd

Babar has total of 1 innings of substance in his whole test career. The innings I am talking about is his 100 against srilanka.

He has had worse test career than shafiq and Azhar

It’s an opportunity to play one of his most meaningful innings but knowing babar I am not confident at all.

Yeah it’s been a great test match and the crowd has been great too

It's a good test pitch not a flat road if you are good player you will find a way to score and survive and there's a bit for the bowlers as well i think its a fair pitch better than the rank turner's that make our ordinary spinners look like world beaters in test matches you need to fight hard

Contributions from lower order are significant on these kind of pitches. Even against England in 3rd test Pakistan would have lost without Noman and Sajid contribution with the bat

Mate it’s turning square. Are you not watching Harmer bowl? Just we can’t turn it big. But then again the line and lengths are wrong. Stump to stump half a bat round the wick and over the wicket. That’s all we need to do.

Attacking Field placings and the denial of easy singles make a big difference. Shan puts fielders on the boundary from ball one and doesn't have enough people around the bat and in the ring to stop the singles. It is hard for a spinner to maintain any consistent pressure when he is bowling to a different batsman every two deliveries

This match will be over either close to lunch or half an hour or so after that.

Babar will get out with in the first two overs after the restart. Salman and Rizwan will scratch around for a few overs and the 4 others will combine together to maybe score 10 runs.

Looks to be the case. SA have the upper hand and confidence given their fightback, recovery and it shows on their body language.

Asad Shafiq averaged less than 40 throughout. Please don't even mention him. Azhar was a very good test player.
 
Pakistan lost grip on the match when they took new ball, and the rumour is going on that it was Pakistan's master mind who asked Shan to do that. Also being back Asif Afridi so late was the other major factor when Shaheen and Sajid were getting tonked. I cannot see Pakistan build any significant lead that South Africa with their long line up cannot get. All in all an exciting test match thanks to Aqib if the rumours are true.

Babar averages more than 35 only because of ramiz era flat beds.

He has less 100s than shafiq. I agree shafiq was average but we need to realise babar in tests in even worse

Pakistan is going to lose bad and that is writing on the wall, Rabada and Suawamy have already engraved the tombstone stone.
 
I believe 150 lead maybe sufficient enough. Pitch is doing alot more now. Will be big pressure on saffers. Babar needs to continue the way he is.

That’s a different point. He was saying pitch isn’t turning. I’m saying it’s turning square. There are just a multitude of reasons why the bowlers are not able to get through Saf batting.
 
If Babar and Rizwan pull off an epic partnership tomorrow, it'll be right up there with 152-0.
 
Of course I have not been watching this dreadful crap test series on crap test wickets, but kudos to SA lower oder to make it a game. What awesome fearless batting from Rabada while Mathusamy anchoring the lower order. The game certainly has tilted in SA favor unless the current pair at least provide resistance till tea. Pak will have to grind the day - dunno if they have the will and skill to accomplish it. In the most likely scenario, SA levels it 1-1.
 
Let’s look at a few scenarios:

a) if pak bat out 30 more overs and add 100 runs, set 120-130 target, SA’s game.

b) If pak bat 45-50 more overs to add 150 runs, set 170-180, even game.

c) If pak bat 2 sessions, add 180-200 more, Pak’s game.

I fear scenario ‘a’ is what’s going to happen but we can aim for ‘b’. Scenario ‘c’ is pure wishful thinking with this batting depth. The last wicket partnership that came out of nowhere has thrown us off.
 
Pak are definitely up against it

Barring miraculous battingtomorrow, South Africa should win this test easily and level the series
 
What a shambolic performance and yet another game where Pakistan let the opposition off the hook again from tailenders. They keep losing Tests because of this. You lost the WI due to this, lost the Bangladesh due to this and SA match. What this level of consistent inability to get tailenders out shows is poor captaincy. They keep letting this happen and seem to be clueless when the attack is being taken to them. Also, what does this say about our tailenders who seemingly can't score more than 10-20 runs combined in home conditions while SA tailenders are batting better than most of our main batsmen. A team of poor captaincy and full of mental midgets.

After seeing tailenders score run so easily, Pakistan bat and start falling apart like a house of cards. This is another issue in their 2nd innings that continues to happen game after game. These dudes literally can't go one inning, let alone one match without an epic collapse.

I am positive Babar will get himself out in the first over tomorrow and rest of the team will fold like a house of cards. I hope I am wrong but there is seemingly very little faith in this team in ever putting consecutive good games together at this point.

Well tbh with you pakistan played really well its just about getting runs from tail do you really think rabbada can bat better than noman and sajid don't forget sajid and noman handy runs with bat vs england its all about believe and they should with agha still to come anything around 150 its game on big time.

Let's not kid ourselves. I have seen multiple times Rabada getting glued to the wicket. He can actually deliver in all 3 formats. Don't embarrass yourself comparing him to dead wicket nobodies.

The scenario is pretty simple - show the will to stay and grind it out until SA HAS to bat on a 5th day wicket. ONLY and Only then Pak has a chance. If they got out even with a lead of 200 and SA has to bat after tea, the game is GONE!

AJ , this is a S L O W deck , new ball is 45 overs away & if SAF 's last 2 wickets could play for 35 overs & score 169 runs , I see no reason why hosts cannot bat for 70-80 overs & score 230-235 runs .
Remember, 2 rockstars of PP in general & @Rana in particular are still batting !

The surface conditions are irrelevant when it comes to our batsmen. They don't have the templemant or ability to play sort of inns that Pakistan will need to get out of this hole. SA will NOT have to chase more than hundred.
 
Captain matters in the situations where the game starts to veer away but the Pakistani captains don't seem to be dynamic thinkers nor independent strategists nor good decision makers.

The team is a PCB team controlled by Naqvi and with lots of influence and vested interests of people outside the team.

Therefore, PCB would employ someone like Shaan who can be a yes man and will only play by their book, because that's also what he knows most.

In cricket, the captain should be given full reign of the team and should be someone who is selected not only on just cricket playing skills but also strategic, game management, leadership skills along with having his own unique game and leadership philosophy.

All great captains and leaders of the sport have been as such.

1) He spread the field to Muthu on last ball when Rabada was new at the crease and didn't allow pressure on Rabada. The best time to get him out was when he was new at the crease.

2) Even if batsman is hitting 6s you still keep field up to put pressure, if you keep fielders back, they are taking singles AND hitting 6s both.

Poor, poor captaincy.

If anything, I am surprised that they didn't capitulate to 100 all-out. At any rate, 100 all-out or 200 all-out is the same thing. Pitch will be at it's worst and most difficult tomorrow and Pakistan don't have the batting depth or mental toughness to come back from a situation like this. South Africa have broken them mentally by adding 169 for the last two wickets. These two will probably add some more runs before they suffer another batting collapse.

Babar and Rizwan need to justify their reputations, price tags and aim to score 40-50 runs per hour/drinks break. Pakistan badly needs centuries from Babar, Rizwan, Agha and avg contributions of 20-30 from the tail i.e. Nauman, Sajid, Asif and Shaheen.

Babar and Rizwan can mum their critics for atleast 2 years if they could somehow carve a win out from a certain defeat. But we all know the probability of that is very slim. Pakistan may got bundled out just after lunch even before lunch won't be a big surprise.

Pak has batted bad which is our perennial issue and why we lose majority of our games due to it

Honestly it's wishful thinking at this point. The last time these two delivered when the chips were down was 3 years ago against Australia in Karachi. Both of them were far different batsmen back then, and even that match ended in a draw. Probability dictates that there is very little chance of this happening. I also have very little hope from Pakistan's tail. I guess maybe Noman and Sajid could add some runs, but Shaheen is just a blind slogger and Asif seems to have very minimal ability with the bat.
