On This Day May 28, 1974: Misbah-ul-Haq was born

He turns 39 today.

Misbah ul Haq made his Test debut in 2001 and ODI debut in 2002, coincidentally both times against New Zealand, scoring 28 in both formats. With the likes of Inzamam ul Haq, Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan, Misbah ul Haq found it very difficult to make a place in the Pakistani middle order, only managing to play 12 ODIs and 5 tests since he made his international debut in 2002. Nevertheless, Misbah ul Haq was a consistent performer at the domestic level.

Misbah's comeback into the Pakistan team came in 2007 as Inzamam ul Haq retired from international cricket. He was Inzamam's replacement in the first-ever Twenty20 World Cup Tournament held in 2007 and played a crucial role in getting Pakistan into the final and very close to victory.

While Misbah continued to back his comeback with consistent performances, he was chosen to captain Pakistan against South Africa after their controversial tour of England in August 2010. While often criticized for his batting approach, Misbah ul Haq has proven time and again to be a calming presence in a batting order that became infamously known for its batting collapse.

As Pakistan go into the Champions Trophy, there are high hopes for Pakistan to perform well in this tournament and in particular a lot will depend on the captaincy and batting of Misbah ul Haq.

Here's wishing Misbah ul Haq a very happy birthday and best of luck for both the upcoming Champions Trophy and the year to come.

Happpy bday misbahh....

hope you win CT as your bday present.

Happy Birthday to the only stable Pakistani skipper in recent memory.

39, the same age as Imran Khan when he led Pakistan to victory in the 1992 World Cup.

Hopefully he will retire with grace like Imran after winning the2015 World Cup in Australia, with history repeating itself.

Some people may make the case of him retiring after the CT but IMO we badly need him for a couple of more years.

He is just 39 years young. He should be available for the WC in 2015 :afridi

The man showed how to reply to your critics without even saying a word!!

Mard-e-Momin Mard-e-Haq!

"12 years ago on my test debut I was being told that I only have two to three years of cricket left..... Today, I'm 39 and i'm still listening the same"-Misbah-Ul-Haq

Today this guy is 41 and till playing cricket

Happy Birthday to Misbah, have a serious amount of respect for this man.

He may only have a year left, and I hope he signs off with a bang. :136:

If you're talking about his physical ability, he can give top performances till the next 2-3 years at least. He's THAT fit.

He had a brief dip in form in mid-2014 to late 2014. I remember people used to say "he's finished". "He can't gain back form at this age". "His reflexes are gone, won't come back".

It's unreal how he came back and started performing the moment PAK team landed in NZ for practice games and then the ODI series. This man always ups his game before/during the BIG ICC events, and becomes our TOP performer...

Misbah is as big a mystery as afridi, both took their style to extreme, which in hindsight proved bad for pak cricket, only if both could have found a middle ground pak cricket now would have been on another level and much better shape, and both had the talent to do so as they shown opposite of their usual self on some rare occasions with afridi some sensible defensive innings and misbah with some of his ultra aggressive innings like in 2007 world T20 and that fastest test century.

No cricketer in modern history has inspired as much Man-Love as Misbah. While I disagree with lots of things in his approach, no one including me can ever point a finger at his integrity, his commitment Pakistan cricket and his dignity in all circumstances.

Happy Birthday Misbah. Figure out what you want to do with your life and hopefully it is in the form of a hands-on role with Pakistan cricket and not in media.

What I admire most about him is that not once has he ever complained about not getting a proper run in the side pre 2007/08 eventhough he had been topping the run charts year after year. He didn't cry nepotism or victimization eventhough honestly think that in test cricket he would have been a good no.6 where guys like Fasial Iqbal, Hasan Raza and Asim Kamal were given long ropes

Happy birthday Misbah. The man who stablised Pakistan cricket after the spot fixing scandal.

Happy Birthday to the original King of the Lords Test... 45 years young!!

One of the greats of Pakistan cricket. Practically demonstrated that discipline will trump flair every single time. Despite having one of the weakest teams in Pakistan cricketing history at his disposal, he managed to whitewash England and Australia in Test matches. Won in West Indies for the first time in Pakistan's history. Defeated India in India and South Africa in South Africa. Lifted the Asia Cup. Most wins as Test captain for a Pakistani. Getting Pakistan to number 1 in the Test rankings. These achievements dwarf any achievements by any past or present cricketing captain (barring Imran probably).

Misbah-ul-Haq - a champion role model. Then. Now. Forever!!!

One of the legends of Pakistan cricket. Although not talent wise , still a very good and hard-working player who brought order and leadership to the worst times of Pakistan cricket.

The individual who has derailed Pakistan cricket the second most in the last 20 years.

The first is obvious. :butt

I still feel that he rescued and stabilised Pakistan cricket when it was on its knees and heading towards a fark place. What he did at that time should never be underestimated.
