Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday held a rally in Muzaffarabad to show solidarity with residents of occupied Kashmir, who have been under a lockdown for more than 40 days after India moved to annex the territory.

The premier began his address to the mammoth gathering by thanking them for giving him a splendid welcome.

"The reason for me becoming an ambassador of Kashmiri people is that I am a Pakistani, a Muslim and a human," he said.

Addressing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said: "Only a coward man can commit such cruelty against human beings; today 900,000 Indian soldiers are committing atrocities against the people of occupied Kashmir.

"A brave man can never do this. No matter how much injustice you commit, you will never succeed.

"Because the people of Kashmir, be it women, children or the elderly, are not scared of death anymore.

"We all should know that Modi has been a member of the RSS since he was a child. It is a Hindu extremist group and they hate Muslims, Christians and all minorities.

"They believe in Hindu supremacy and they hate Muslims because they ruled over India for [hundreds of] years.

"They are walking the same path as Hitler's Nazi party, which committed atrocities against minority groups.

"Since RSS was formed, they have wanted an ethnic cleansing of Muslims, i.e., to rid India of Muslims and this is all in accordance with their plan.

"Today Kashmir has been internationalised. United Nations Security Council held a meeting on Kashmir issue for the first time in 50 years.

"The European Union, for the first time, said that the Kashmir issue should be resolved as per UN resolutions. OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) also said that India should lift curfew in Kashmir.

"More than 40 MPs in Britain raised the Kashmir issue. I am happy that US senators wrote a letter to President Donald Trump and urged him to intervene in the matter.

"I am going to the UN General Assembly in New York and I will not disappoint the Kashmiri people.

"I will raise this issue on every international platform. If possible, watch my interview on RT tonight and tomorrow on Al Jazeera.

"First I want to tell India that you are pushing people towards extremism. If you mistreated me, the women and kids of my family, I would have fought because I would have thought that death is better than this life.

"Not just the Kashmiris, but other people as well. What message are you giving to the Muslims of India? That you will live here like second-class citizens, like animals?

"You are telling them that you can oppress people in a Muslim-majority region by deploying 900,000 soldiers who blind kids, mistreat women and the elderly?"

"1.2 billion Muslims are looking at Kashmir. They will be pushed towards extremism as well. Islam means peace, we are peaceful people. But when you see that your people are being mistreated and the world is quiet, you react.

"India blamed Pakistan when a Kashmiri youth blew himself up because they did not want to tell the world that it was because of the Indian government's brutality that Kashmiris were turning towards extremism.

"They blamed us and sent in their jet. Our airforce then brought down their jets and captured their pilot. We returned him because we wanted to solve issues through dialogue.

"They (India) said that we returned him because we got afraid. Believers do not fear death, we did not return the pilot because we are scared of you.

"They have started to [paint this narrative] again that Pakistan is sending militants.

"I have said this before; we will answer every brick with a stone.

"I urge the international community to stop this Indian Hitler.

"We want this issue to be solved in accordance with UN resolutions. Through a referendum, Kashmiris should have the right to choose whatever they want. We will support the Kashmiris' choice."

Addressing the youth of Azad Kashmir while concluding his speech, Prime Minister Imran said: "I know you want to advance towards the Line of Control, but don't go until I tell you. First let me go to the United Nations and fight Kashmir's case."

A number of celebrities including Shehzad Roy, Faakhir Mehmood, Javaid Shaikh, Humayun Saeed and former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi then riled up the crowd. Faakhir and Sahir Ali Bagga also performed.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, addressing the large gathering earlier, said that while residents of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) have access to news and internet, occupied Kashmir was under a lockdown and a communications blackout.

He demanded that Indian premier Modi lift the curfew and challenged him to hold a rally like the one being held in Muzaffarabad and address the residents of occupied Kashmir.

"The prime minister of Pakistan is addressing AJK people in public in Muzaffarabad. Modi, I challenge you, can you go to Srinagar and address people like this?"

AJK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider thanked the people and government of Pakistan for their support.

"We don't know how our relatives in occupied Kashmir are doing," he said, adding: "Do not get entangled in the bilateral dialogue narrative because that undermines the Kashmir issue."


The prime minister was accompanied by Qureshi, Senator Faisal Javed, Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak and Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid, among others.

Several celebrities and public figures were also in attendance.

The premier had announced the plan in a tweet on Wednesday and said that he means to "send a message to the world about the continuing siege of India-occupied Jammu and Kashmir by Indian occupation forces; and to show the Kashmiris that Pakistan stands resolutely with them".

It is the prime minister's third visit to Azad Jammu and Kashmir since August 5 when India scrapped the special status of occupied Kashmir through a rushed presidential order and imposed a strict lockdown and communications blackout in the region, that has been in place for more than 40 days.

Prime Minister Imran had visited Muzaffarabad on Independence Day, when he addressed AJK's legislative assembly. He paid another visit earlier this month on Defence Day, when he visited the Line of Control and met the families of martyred soldiers as well as those of civilians who were killed by shelling by the Indian forces.

I think the Hitler and Nazi analogy is accurate and doing wonders to portray BJP image in the world. As I said before in another thread the reason you would not see major countries speaking out against India is because they want to trade with India and its umlimited population and cheap labour. Human Rights abuses are being noted though and one day would cost India.

Muslim communities aren't just represented by corrupt autocratic Gulf monarchs who are distrusted by most regular Muslims around the world, there are many Muslim in our communities of various backgrounds that are aware of the Kashmir conflict and are protesting it or are at least disgusted by the Indian govt. The OIC itself, a large pan-Muslim organization condemned India numerous times so trying to make it seem like "Muslims don't care about Kashmir" is both ignorant and dishonest. What Imran Khan has done is raised awareness about the oppression of Kashmiris and I've seen a huge increase in the discourse about Kashmir, more and more and non-South Asians and even non-Muslims are talking about it. We've had congressmen and senators in America condemn India recently, so acting like Khan hasn't succeeded in internationalizing the issue is disingenuous.

Arabs hold all the influence, rest of the Islamic world has no value, they are practically worth nothing as far being able to influence India's action. Yeah rest of the muslim world can have a big kumbaya and nothing will change... There are specific definitions of genocide and ethnic cleansing.If we take a step back into history, the Allies were blind to the Jewish Holocaust till they stumbled on to the concentration camps and saw the piles of dead bodies, near-death prisoners and gas chamber infrastructure. Likewise, Bosnia did not become a global human rights issue till the mass unmarked graves were uncovered.

It is hard for any nation to justify Modi being a Hitler in the making when the opposite view has more proof - India's 200m integrated muslims living in peace and harmony. India's detailed dossier presented to UNHRC members outlines the on-ground activities and plans to integrate the people of Kashmir through peaceful means of development, education, economic support and infrastructure building. Also, the fact that this has happened before - Russia taking control of Crimea and Ukraine's utter helplessness in the matter.

It is not all economic clout - it is also about Pakistan not being able to make an effective legal case with precedents and proof. Tempering the rhetoric down to human right abuses would be more effective than genocide claims.

I remember being quite happy when Imran won. I still think and believe that in his personal life he must be a decent and classy guy.

But some of his political tap dancing has been disappointing and hypocritical to say the least. He also sounds tired, weak and powerless at times.

At some point, Pakistan's population is going to turn around and ask him what he was able to do beyond winning the Twitter Wars.

Also, one thing I've consistently noticed with him since the revocation of J&K's special status, he keeps making veiled and direct threats about a Jihadi-type response from Indian Muslims. It would have been ok if he said it like - "If you do this this and this, that will be the inevitable reaction."

Like a fact.

Instead, the sense you get from him is that - after going on and on about how sincere he was about disbanding terrorism originating from Pakistan, he's now feeling the benefits of going down the bleeding cuts route. Who rejected two nation theory? Mufti or her father? Was either in any position to take decisions in 1947. The decision was taken by Hari Singh and his son has no objections.

MUZAFFARABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday warned that continued repression by Indian troops would push not only Kashmiris but also Muslims in India and other parts of the world into extremism.

“First I want to tell India that the atrocities your army is committing in [occupied] Kashmir will give rise to extremism. The people who are facing your tyranny will fight it by all means,” he said in his address to a big gathering at K.H. Khur*shid Mini Stadium in the heart of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) capital.

The participants, including women and students, vociferously chanted pro-freedom and anti-India slogans throughout the rally. Many of them were holding AJK flags.

“What India is doing in Kashmir will draw a strong reaction. Not only from the Kashmiris, but also from Indian Muslims as well as Muslims across the world,” said the prime minister.

Recounting the plight of Indian Muslims, such as lynching by cow vigilantes, he asked whether Indian premier Narendra Modi was giving a message to them that there was no room and no rights for them in India and that they should live there like second-class citizens or animals.

“Are you telling them you can convert the majority in Kashmir into minority thro*ugh 900,000 soldiers and kill and blind children and the elderly? When you say that India is just for the Hindus, you push 220 million Indian Muslims to extre*mism,” Mr Khan said, adding that marginalising people led to radicalising them.

Imran vows to raise issue at UN General Assembly

He warned that 1.25 billion Muslims were looking at Kashmir and they would also be driven towards extremism and take up guns if the world continued to behave as a silent spectator. He recalled that a 20-year-old Kashmiri boy had blown himself up in an Indian army convoy because he had been humiliated and tortured by Indian troops, but India had blamed Pakistan for the attack.

Recalling the Balakot bombing by Indian jets and shooting down of an Indian plane the following day, the prime minister said Pakistan had returned the Indian pilot because it wanted to resolve issues through dialogue and not war. “But Narendra Modi commented that we have returned him [pilot] out of fear. Listen Mr Modi, the believers do not fear death; we did not return him out of fear but because of our quest for peace.”

The prime minister said he had decided to become an ambassador of Kashmiris in the world because of being a Pakistani, a Muslim and a human being. “The issue of Kashmir is a humanitarian problem today,” he said, adding that India’s 900,000-strong army contingent had locked down every Kashmiri for the past 40 days.

“No brave man can ever resort to the cruelties that Narendra Modi and his extremist RSS are perpetrating on the Kashmiris. Such atrocities can be committed by those who are devoid of humanity,” he said. How*ever, whatever the magnitude of atrocities, Mr Modi would not succeed in Kash*mir because the Kashmiri people were not scared of death anymore, he added.

The prime minister recalled that Mr Modi had been a member since childhood of the RSS — an organisation filled with hatred against Muslims. “As an ambassador of the Kashmiris I will inform the whole world about the reality of the RSS which imitates Hitler’s Nazi party and wants ethnic cleansing of Muslims,” he added.

He said India’s moderate, enlightened and educated class was also worried beca*use India was going to be**come what neither [Maha*tama] Gandhi not [Jawa*harlal] Nehru wanted it to be.

The prime minister said he was pleased to note that Kashmir had been internationalised and the United Nations Security Council had held a meeting on it after 50 years.

In the same context, he listed positive developments at the UN Human Rights Commission, European and British parliaments and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. “Next week, I am going to the UN General Assembly and I will not disappoint the Kashmiris. Hardly anyone would have stood for the Kashmiris [in the past] the way I will stand for them,” he said.

“I know India will say that ‘terrorists’ are coming from Pakistan so as to divert the world’s attention from the situation in held Kashmir. But we will not let it happen,” he said, reiterating that Pakistan would respond to “every brick [from India] with a stone”.

“Once a war broke out, this nation will fight you till the last breath,” he said, calling upon the international community to stop “Indian Hitler” and force him to lift curfew and grant right to self-determination to the Kashmiris as pledged to them by the UN in 1948.

The prime minister also made it clear that the choice of Kashmiris regarding their future would reign supreme. “Whatever the people of Kashmir want is acceptable to us. This is their right to take a decision [about their fate]. We will stand by them.”

Towards the end of his speech, Mr Khan told the Kashmiri youth that he knew many of them wanted to stage a march on the LoC out of passion and commitment. “But don’t go until I tell you. First let me go to the United Nations and fight Kashmir’s case. I will tell the world if the Kashmir issue is not addressed, its [adverse] impact will go across the world,” he said.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi drew comparison between the liberated and occupied parts of Kashmir and challenged Mr Modi to hold a rally in Srinagar like the one in Muzaffarabad and address the people there.

In his speech, AJK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider said the people on his side wanted to trample down the LoC. He urged the foreign minister “not to get entangled in the trap of bilateral dialogue because it sidesteps the issue of Kashmiris”. Mr Haider said the entire political leadership in AJK was on the same page regarding occupied Kashmir and stood by Pakistan.

Prominent among those who accompanied the prime minister were Defence Minister Pervez Khattak, Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Kashmir Affairs Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Special Assistant to the PM on Information Dr Firdaus Ashiq Awan and parliamentary Kashmir committee chairman Syed Fakhar Imam.

There have been conflicting accounts of the number of deaths in Indian-administered Kashmir, and how they were caused, since the region was stripped of its autonomy six weeks ago. The BBC's Yogita Limaye looks at some cases in the city of Srinagar.
Seventeen-year-old Asrar Ahmad Khan was on the street outside his home on 6 August when he received an injury that led to his death in hospital four weeks later.
Described as a "bright student" who loved sport, the circumstances surrounding his death have become one of the latest points of dispute in the restive region where conflicting narratives of events are steadily becoming the norm.
His father, Firdous Ahmad Khan, alleges that Asrar was playing cricket with his friends when he was struck on the head by a teargas canister and lead pellets. One of his friends who was with him at the time says that he was fired at by Indian paramilitary troops who were withdrawing for the evening.
Asrar's medical report states he died of injuries caused by pellets, and the blast of a teargas shell. But India's top army commander in Kashmir, Lt Gen KJS Dhillon, has said that Asrar was hit by a stone, ostensibly thrown by Kashmiri protesters at armed forces.
The Kashmir police have told the BBC that they also stand by this statement. They've called the hospital's report ambiguous, and said it needs further investigation.

The incident took place a day after the Indian government announced that the region would lose its special status and be split into two federally-run territories.
In the days leading up to the surprise announcement, tens of thousands of additional Indian troops were deployed, a major Hindu pilgrimage was cancelled, schools and colleges were shut, tourists were ordered to leave, telephone and internet services were suspended and regional political leaders were placed under house arrest.

The Indian government says that not a single life has been lost due to action by security forces since Kashmir's special status was revoked. However, it has said that two people, including Asrar, have died after being hit by stones thrown by anti-government protesters.
According to the government, three others - two nomadic goatherds in the Tral area of southern Kashmir and one shopkeeper from Srinagar - have been killed by armed insurgents.
The shopkeeper, 60-year-old Ghulam Mohammad, was reportedly sitting inside his shop with his wife on the evening of 29 August when he was shot dead by three people, who then escaped on a motorcycle.

There has been speculation that he was killed because he did not heed warnings by militant groups against opening his shop. Kashmir's Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh has said that pamphlets warning people against opening shops, banks and petrol stations are being distributed by militant groups.
The BBC visited Mr Mohammad's family but they were too afraid to speak. Police told us they were still investigating the motive behind his murder.
But other people say that the government's "official figures" do not account for the unnatural deaths of their loved ones in recent days.

Among them is Rafiq Shagoo, who told the BBC he was having tea with his wife Fehmeeda Bano in their two-storey house in the Bemina area of Srinagar on 9 August when clashes between protesters and security forces broke out in the neighbourhood.
Tear gas - commonly used by security forces to dispel protests - filled their home and Fehmeeda, 34, began to choke, he said.
"She told me she was having trouble breathing. So I rushed her to the hospital. She kept asking me 'what's happening to me', and was very scared. The doctors tried hard, but she couldn't be saved."

Ms Bano's medical report states she died of toxic gas inhalation. Her husband is now planning to file a petition in court to ask for an investigation into his wife's death.
The circumstances surrounding the death of 60-year-old Mohammad Ayub Khan in the Safakadal area of Srinagar are very similar to that of Ms Bano.
Mr Khan's friend Fayaz Ahmad Khan said he was passing by the area on 17 August when clashes broke out.
He told the BBC that he saw two tear gas canisters land near Mr Khan's feet. His friend was rushed to a hospital, but doctors said he was already dead. No medical report has been given to the family.
The police told us that it was a rumour that Mr Khan had died from inhaling teargas smoke.
Despite the lockdown in the region, and the frequent imposition of curfew-like conditions, protests against the government and security forces have occurred and have often turned violent.

Hospitals have been tight-lipped about how many casualties they've received. Many of those injured have chosen not to go to proper medical facilities to get treated, because they fear they might be arrested for participating in protests.
The government is already believed to have detained thousands of people including activists, local politicians and businessmen. Many have been shifted to jails in cities outside the region.
But even though it's hard to assess how many people have died or have been injured, it is clear that the scale of the unrest has been much smaller than Kashmir has witnessed before.
"It is in sharp contrast to earlier disturbances of 2008, 2010 and 2016 where a large number of people lost their lives," governor Satya Pal Malik told reporters.
"All security forces have worked day and night to ensure that normalcy can be gradually restored without causing harm to individuals," he added.
Many argue, however, that the communications blackout and military clampdown are the real reasons public anger is not on full display.
It's unclear when the restrictions imposed in Kashmir will be fully lifted - and what is likely to happen when they are.

Pakistan on Thursday expressed concerns over the health and safety of incarcerated Kashmiri leaders, as well as other innocent Kashmiris, languishing in jails across India on trumped-up charges.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri, in his weekly media briefing, said the coronavirus situation in India has been worsening and most of the jails are overcrowded and do not have any provisions against the COVID-19.

The incarcerated Kashmiri leaders include Aasiya Andrabi, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Shabir Ahmed Shah, Ashraf Sehrai, Advocate Shahid-ul-Islam, Altaf Ahmed Shah, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Ayaz Akbar, Peer Saifullah, Raja Merajuddin Kalwal, Syed Shahid Yousuf, Shakeel Ahmed, Farooq Ahmed Dar, Fehmeeda Sofi, Nahida Nasreen, Zahoor Ahmed, and others.

"Reportedly, some of the Kashmiri leaders in Indian jails have already contracted the coronavirus. Unfortunately, they are not even provided any medical treatment," the spokesperson said.

Given the worst pandemic situation in India, the Indian government must immediately release the incarcerated Kashmiri leadership and all innocent Kashmiris, he demanded.

"We once again call upon the international community, particularly the United Nations, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and human rights organisations to take cognisance of this dire humanitarian situation," he said.

However, he reiterated Pakistan's expression of solidarity with the people of India in the wake of the current wave of COVID-19 that has hit the region hard.

As a gesture of solidarity, Pakistan has also offered relief support to India, he said, adding: "We are ready to immediately provide ventilators, Bi-PAP, digital X-ray machines, PPEs, and related items."

Regarding Dr Aafia Siddiqui, he said the Embassy of Pakistan in Washington DC and the Consulate-General in Houston remain in contact with her and her attorney.

Upon seeing media reports, Pakistan's mission has once again contacted the concerned US authorities and did not receive any such information as is being reported in the media.

"Our Mission has made an urgent request for another consular access/visitation to Aafia Siddiqui. The mission will remain in contact with the concerned US authorities regarding Siddiqui’s welfare," he added.

Meanwhile, India's coronavirus disaster deepened today with its daily death toll climbing above 3,600, as more than 40 countries sent urgent medical aid to help the country tackle the spiraling crisis.

The United States and several European nations have started to ease restrictions this week as vaccination campaigns have picked up, but the pandemic continues to worsen in many parts of the world.

Among the most devastating of those waves is in India, where death and infection rates have been rising exponentially throughout April.

On Thursday, India reported 3,645 deaths over the past 24 hours, while confirmed new cases hit a new global record with more than 379,000. The official numbers are widely believed to be far lower than the reality.

In many Indian cities, hospitals are running out of beds as relatives of the sick crowd outside pharmacies and suppliers for medicines and oxygen cylinders.

The spiking body count has also overwhelmed crematoriums and graveyards and caused a shortage of wood for funeral pyres.
