Former Test cricketer Abdul Qadir has lashed out at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman and termed him cricket-illiterate, who had inflicted huge damages to national team.
Talking to The Nation, former PCB chief selector Qadir said: “First of all, my question is that what is the cricketing qualification of Najam Sethi, Ahmed Subhan and Mickey Arhtur? I don’t believe in certificates to run cricket affairs. We have legends like Mushtaq Muhammad, Asif Iqbal, Sarfraz Nawaz, Majid Khan, Zaheer Abbas and Javed Miandad.
“I must openly say that the PCB had wasted golden chances of taking services of two cricket legends late Hanif Muhamamd and Fazal Mehmood, who were universities of cricket . In the fresher lot, we also have Mohsin Hassan Khan, Aamir Sohail, Inzamam, Misbah, Yousaf, Younus Khan and a lot of others, who can produce wonders for Pakistan cricket . Had the PCB appointed a great like Sir Viv Richards, Ian Chappel, Greg Chappel as batting coaches and bowling coaches like Michael Holding and Dennis Lillie, then we would have no issues but the PCB had either hired bunch of non-cricketing brains, or if they do have some past cricketers, they are tainted ones,” he added.
Qadir said that it was quite surprising that a person like Sethi has been running the affairs of PCB, who is a super flop, when it comes to performance of Pakistan cricket team even against ordinary teams like Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, who inflicted whitewashes on green caps in Test matches. It was a matter of grave concern for all of us, who had played out our hearts and played key roles in helping Pakistan team beat top Test-playing nations during our era.
“Just because, the incompetent PCB high ups don’t know the ABC of cricket , they have ignored the importance of Test cricket and just focusing on T20 cricket , which is not a real cricket . It is in fact an entertainment while the original form of cricket is the longer version. Pakistan team is getting short-term successes in shorter format of the game, which is in fact not a success. They have also completely ignored domestic cricket as the domestic top performers are sitting at home while nephew of Inzamam and sons of Shakeel Sheikh have been depriving the genuine players of their due rights. Discrimination, favouritism and nepotism are on the rise in the PCB, which is the major reason behind Pakistan cricket’s downfall,” he added.
Former leg spinner said that if they raise questions in the best interest of Pakistan cricket , Sethi and others don’t like that because they wanted their yes-men to keep on praising them and get meager benefits. “What is the criterion of electing presidents and other office-bearers in the regions. How is it possible that an under-metric can teach 12th class student. It is like a Lt in the Army promoted as COAS. The system is bound to fail, where such things are order of the day.
“I strongly recommend that only Test and first class players, who had played at least 50 plus first class matches, must be eligible to run the regions as regional presidents. The careers of a number of bright cricketers were ruined by the biased policies of the PCB. The cricket-illiterate persons are sitting in drawing rooms and taking important decisions about cricket . They have destroyed the domestic structure and are free to inflict further damages in Pakistan cricket . There is no one who may dare to seek explanation from them,” he added.
Qadir said the selectors had selected a very weak team for New Zealand tour. “Now they will use lame excuses about bouncy tracks, movement and green tracks. If someone had knowhow of cricket , he would have started at least one-month camp at either Abbottabad or Rawalpindi green bottoms, as their tracks help fast bowlers to larger extent and help prepare well for the upcoming series. But the national team was taken to New Zealand without any preparations, so the results would also be very pathetic.”
“Pakistan cricket team is presently under the label of winning the Champions Trophy by chance. So the New Zealand tour was perfect opportunity to put off that label and show the world that green caps had won the title due to their hard work, passion and team work. My advice to the team and management is that they must focus on merit and Test cricket , if they want to excel against top Test playing nations, otherwise, the results will be pathetic,” Qadir concluded.
