KARACHI: The Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) – Ramiz Raja, while talking to the media has revealed his goal to make Pakistan Super League (PSL) equal to the Indian Premier League (IPL), here on Monday.

Ramiz, while talking to the media in an informal interaction, expressed his desire to make Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s marquee event PSL as successful as IPL.

“We will make PSL as big as the IPL,” he said.

“PSL has become the brand of Pakistan. Pakistan has benefited a lot from the PSL. Also, in the last season, each PSL franchise earn around 540 Crores,” he added.

Ramiz further showed his desire to hold a tri-nation series including the arch-rivals India.

“We want to hold a triangular series with India,” he said.

“The idea of bilateral series has become obsolete in Test cricket. The future of cricket lies in tri-nation and quadrilateral series,” he added.

Ramiz, however, admitted that the PCB can not exert pressure on the Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) through the International Cricket Council (ICC).

“We can’t use the ICC to put additional pressure on India. We must be able to stand on our own,” he said.

Ramiz then termed getting the hosting rights of two major events as the success of the PCB, while also showing the determination of working on the infrastructure.

Why is he issuing such dumb statements on a day when everything the PCB portrays itself to be has been exposed?

Ramiz says he wants to hold a tri series with India. IK calls India a fascist Islamophobic state that will not play cricket with a Muslim country. Pakistan sending mixed signals as always

Ramiz is being deluded. First start winning at home atleast against quality opposition and then talk.

The golden goose is the PSL. It's the one laying the golden eggs, so it's no wonder so many are obsessed by it. If it keeps laying golden eggs and providing so many with rupees then of course that will be the priority.

The problem is though, whilst the golden eggs are being laid, other eggs will just rot.

lol shows how seriously PCT will take test cricket

Yeah, keep on concentrating on PSL while your test team goes to the dogs!

Not been a good PR week for our beloved Chairman and his black hair dye. First that nonsense video admitting we are scared of the Aussie pace attack and now chatting about the PSL when our test team has been humiliated.

Way it go Chairman Saab!

If we take the PSL to auction model, increase the purse, then I'll put it in the IPL bracket. And then we'll see who goes to play the IPL over the PSL.

Ramiz has thrown a challenge to the IPL and BCCI. Should they respond with anyone playing IPL cant play PSL and will be paid more?

Or

Will Ramiz make PSL the biggest league in cricket and IPL will go bust?

Ikr, don't know why he keeps bleating on about India. On one had he says wants to stand on own two feet then cries about India.

And yeah, and as others point out, these deflection tactics don't wash the house crumbling.

What a buffoon.

The motormouth strikes again.

Why not first try making QEA Trophy as good as Ranji Trophy ? Try training our Pakistani junior level coaches to be as good as their Indian counterparts, or our curators to make the variety of pitches they have in India ?

Maybe we wouldn't get spanked in a home Test vs Australia.

I used to enjoy listening to Ramiz. I really thought he would be a positive force for Pakistan as an administrator. He seemed polished, and felt he would be sensible in what he says.

But its been the complete opposite. I never though much of the British guy (Wasim Khan?). But I can now see how much better an administrator he was.

He is probably still in his commentator role here. One random statement after another.

Above statement is not random.

Random in the sense that why would you even talk about T20 game in the middle of a highly anticipated test series. I don't have much to say about the actual comments here.

Just to put things into perspective

The purse of PSL is 1.2mn usd, IPL 12mn USD.

Costliest IPL team $945mn, costiest PSL team $44.45mn.

IPL's broadcast rights sold way back in 2009 was worth $1.1bn for 9 years, PSL rights today are worth 24mn for 2 years.

Where is the money going to come from?
What if IPL lifts the purse ceiling to 25 or 30 mn?

Dont worry, once the govt is removed, hopefully ppp can bring in their own guy as chairman. This one has gone craz

If i were you i would be happy with this.

Basically he is gonna run psl down the ground...

PSL will never catchup economically with IPL. That is an absolute truth.
Indian economy and market size will always be bigger than Pakistan.

Money for a sports league comes from its sponsors. Sponsors are there if economy is doing well and people have money to spare. I do not see how PSL can get the kind of sponsorship that IPL gets. Ramiz Raja will do well to find out the net worth of the owners of IPL teams and that of sponsors of IPL. Their total net worth is more than $ 300 billions.

Good ambitions but what a time to make these statements! Australia are here to play a test series after a life time and you speak about PSL now?

That's the gdp of Pakistan.

Dumb statement and timing.

I am fine with PSL as it is , maybe some room for improvement over time. No need to make it IPL.

Focus on making test team a real top 3 ranked side and same for odi team.

Hire proper coaching staff for intl, a team , academies and u 19. Work on domestic setup coaching as well.

Is abusing and denigrating India and Indian cricket a prerequisite to be PCB chairman? Ramiz used to praise India and Indian cricket as a commentator and youtuber. Now, he abuses us everyday. What is the point of even discussing PSL when important home series vs Australia is going on?

What's so abusive about his comments?

Former India batter Aakash Chopra has reacted to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ramiz Raja's idea of bringing in an auction model for Pakistan Super League (PSL), saying one will never see a player getting a price tag as heavy as Rs 16 crore. Earlier, Ramiz Raja had said that if an auction model is used for PSL, then one can really judge who chooses to play Indian Premier League over PSL.

"Even if you do an auction instead of drafts, it is not going to happen, you will not see a player playing for 16 crores in the PSL. It cannot happen at all, market dynamics are not going to allow that to happen, it's as simple as that," Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

"The story starts with the broadcaster on how much money he is willing to spend," he stated further.

Chopra also used the example of Chris Morris who was earlier picked by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 16 crore. The former India batter said that no other league in the world has the capability of competing with the economics that take place in the IPL.

"To be very honest, Chris Morris' one ball, when he played last time, was more expensive than the players' salary in other leagues. Is it even possible to compete or compare yourself with the IPL, whether it is PSL, BBL, The Hundred or the CPL? Is it a slightly misplaced judgment?" he wondered.

"The price is decided based on how much money you get from the rights, the league is valued on the basis of the rights that are sold, there is a total purse according to which you play. All these are interlinked, they are not separate. If someone sees them separately, he is going to get defeated," he stated further.

Ramiz Raja had also said that he wanted to move from the draft system to the auction model in the PSL. He then said that an auction model, and an increased purse in the PSL could put the tournament in the same bracket as the IPL.

The IPL 2022 season will kick off on March 26 and the tournament opener will be contested between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders.

It could've been all okay if Ramiz only talked about taking auction route for PSL instead of draft.

But as usual he couldn't keep control on his motor mouth and unnecessarily brought IPL.
On top of that saying who will chose to go to IPL over PSL. Seriously?

I like Ramiz's approach. He is different from his predecessors who just kept lamenting that ICC isn't doing anything or BCCI is the real evil etc.

However he needs to control his ambition. No point going for something unrealistic in trying to compete with India. Not just Pak, but T20's inventor themselves laughed at BCCI and missed the bus to make a league like IPL and are now trying to push a clown league called the100.

Pak will take years to match the numbers of IPL or even after years it may not happen because the size of Pak's market /= India's market.

You have to see you grow 10x yoy or 100x whatever your goal is. That should be the aim and not how to beat IPL or be = IPL.

Ramiz Bhai has earnest intentions at heart, but his mouth gets the better of him. That said too much blame being thrown at him here.

Aiming high has its own benefits. Perhaps auction 2 or 4 more franchises, increase revenue and create a larger local player pool.

Why do you assume this? Most if not all Indians have no issues with PSL nor do they a problem if Pakistanis take pride in it. Why shouldn’t they?

The problem is with delusional statements people make like how PSL is superior to IPL in every which way etc.

Also you can say your objective is to grow PSL or improve it even more etc without brining in IPL.

I have rarely seen PSL being brought up in any IPL discussion unless it is a passing comment in the commentary like someone saying so and so had a good PSL season. That’s the maximum coverage it gets for good or bad.

at the end of the day, every other league is a competation.

If IPL was to self destroy or any other league for that matter, i would be very happy as that would mean one less competition for our league.

PSL is not a competition to IPL. It is foolish and counterproductive for PSL to think it is just like it would have been for IPL to stress about PSL or any other league as potential competition. They are not.

Right now IPL is the place to be for any professional cricketer to earn his $$$, when there is no IPL the rest of the leagues are a good monetary option. That’s about it.

There is IPL and then there is IPL lite (PSL,Big bash, Carribean league etc) that’s about it.

 immature comment

Every other league is a competitor. I understand your superiority complex was hurt, but thats how it is.

Your argument could had been whether it is a major competitor that could steal the market or not. THat is something debateable.

But at the end of the day, all leagues are competitors of each other.

It will take another 50 yrs for PSL to reach the IPL level but at that time IPL will be another 100 yrs ahead

No need to keep looking at the IPL and comparing. Just focus on your own product and look to improve it.

I would say none of these leagues are a competition to one another. Each league seems to have an unique audience/fan base.

Big Bash fans are not exactly following PSL, PSL fans are not exactly following SA T20 (whatever that is), SA T20 fans aren't exactly following IPL, IPL fans are not following The100, and so on. Sure there are some cross "platform" fans. But they are a very small minoritiy.

So every T20 league has it's own space to grow (or sink) without being in direct competition to another league.

Small and failed minds fear to think big. Success always starts with people calling you a fool for dreaming. Quran teaches us this with the story of Prophet Nuh.

Think big and work hard and success will be your slave. Be negative and tell yourself and others why things are not possible, you will become a slave to failure.

Reading the posts on this thread makes you realise why Pakistan has failed to realised its full potential. Small minded people whose thought processes paralysed with fair of failure.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja has backtracked on his comment about the Indian Premier League (IPL), saying that he was misquoted. Raja, in an interview, had said that an auction model, and an increased purse in the PSL could put the tournament "in the IPL bracket".

"We need to create new properties to be financially independent. We have nothing for now but the PSL and ICC funds. There's an argument over the model from next year; I want to switch it to an auction model from next year. The market forces are conducive, but we'll sit down with the franchise owners to discuss it.

"This is a game of money. When the cricket economy grows in Pakistan, our respect will rise. The main driver of that financial economy is the PSL. If we take the PSL to auction model, increase the purse, then I'll put it in the IPL bracket. And then we'll see who goes to play the IPL over the PSL," Raja was quoted as saying.

The comment was made just before the start of the 15th season of IPL and at a time when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was about to float the tender for the media rights of the next 5-year cycle of IPL, which is expected to rake in astronomical figures for the Indian board.

Raja recently told another media outlet that he was misquoted in the interview and that he is quite aware of the difference between India's and Pakistan's economy.

"I was misquoted," Ramiz said. "I know where the economy of India is and where is Pakistan's. We have plans to improve the PSL. We will bring in the auction model but I was misquoted on the other part," he added.

PSL 2022 ended in February with Lahore Qalandars' beating Multan Sultans in the final to win their maiden Pakistan Super League title.

IPL 2022 began on March 26th with a match between defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
