Our media is brave enough to speak against the establishment but scared of Dawn's CEO Hameed Haroon?

In October 2019, a filmmaker named Jamshed Mehmood took to Twitter to tell the world that he had been sexually assaulted by a powerful media tycoon but didn’t name the assailant.

He came forward when a professor had committed suicide because he had been falsely accused of sexual assault by a student of his – when the investigation proved otherwise he took his own life.

This event led to the general Pakistani public ridiculing the #MeToo movement. The logic behind that? One woman’s false accusation vs Thousands of real cases. If one “bad woman” can ruin the name of all women leading everyone to not believe them, why don’t the actions of one “bad man” not lose credibility of all men?

Seeing the outrage, Jamshed came forward to say that he, as a man, had been assaulted and he had to keep quiet because the assailant was a man in power.

But what happened when he told his story? Some said “men can’t be raped” , some dismissed him because he hadn’t named the perpetrator and others asked why he’s coming out now after 13 years?

A survivor has all the right to share or not share their experiences. They choose when they are ready – no one decides this for them.

Two months later, December 28, 2019 Jamshed has named his assailant – Hameed Haroon.

Hameed Haroon is the CEO of Dawn News – one of the biggest names in the News industry.

Jamshed had to go through trauma, months of therapy and had to leave the country for a while. Because one man in power thought he could do whatever he wanted to him.

If a man can do this to another man and get away with it for 13 years, what’s to say that he hasn’t done it to many more people?

Why is the general media so quick to hop onto a story when a politician or celebrity is named but goes silent when it’s someone that holds a position of power in the same industry as them?

Will we always be brushing vile acts of sexual assault under the rug? Protected the assailants and silencing the survivors?

When will we take sexual assault seriously?

Dawn finally published the story an hour ago after adding the spice "to safeguard the freedom of the press"

Jami names Dawn CEO Hameed Haroon as alleged rapist; Haroon rejects accusation

Filmmaker Jamshed Mahmood, who in October came forward with the accusation that he was raped by a “media tycoon” 13 years ago, has named Dawn CEO Hameed Haroon as his alleged rapist.

The director, popularly known as Jami, made the accusation in a tweet on Saturday night from a new Twitter account he created, allegedly due to his previous account being hacked. He also shared the accusation on his Facebook page.

In response, Haroon on Monday issued a statement categorically rejecting the rape accusations. "The story is simply untrue and intentionally fabricated at the instance of those who wish to silence me and through me, to compel the newspaper that I represent to support their repressive narrative," said Haroon, adding that he will initiate legal action.

"I am initiating legal action to clear my name and reputation, and to safeguard the freedom of the press by bringing to justice all those responsible for these false and malicious allegations against me," said Haroon. (Full statement further below)

Later in the day, Jami posted another tweet responding to the Dawn CEO's statement.

He shared that he had feared “this entire plot that I'm part of Establishment to bring Dawn down” would be used against him. The director clarified that coming forward with his story was not about “Dawn vs Jami. It's personal issue raised now (because) I'm doing all this for few years to help victims."

He rejected the notion that he was acting on the behest of anyone, despite having been approached by some hoping, "to bring down Dawn. We refused every single time as I told them I'm from a family where we don't use any illegal means to serve any purpose at all. Rest we will see in court. This is for victims and survivors. We put our neck out (because) #metoo died here in Pakistan (because) of all these dirty tricks."

"I'm giving my word to Dawn management that I would never hurt Dawn ever... Issue is sexual assault not Dawn."

Complete statement by Hameed Haroon
The following statement has been issued by Hameed Haroon: "For some three months now, tweets in the social media and some print media, some of which have been authored or prompted by Jami Raza, have alleged that Jami was subjected to rape many years ago but was ‘coming out’ only now because the rapist was an ‘influential and powerful media personality’. Hitherto fore, strangely the alleged rapist was never specifically named, even though hints and innuendos were dropped from time to time that could be taken as suggesting that it was the CEO of Dawn, Hameed Haroon. "But since I had not been specifically named in the tweets, I was advised, that even though I had a fair idea of who was prompting Jami Raza, I should exercise restraint until I was specifically named. On 28th December, Jami Raza specifically named me and it has therefore become necessary to respond.

"At the outset, I reiterate my commitment to come to the aid and support of victims of rape, sexual assault and harassment. I unequivocally condemn such dastardly acts whenever and wherever these occur and in whatever shape or form and whether they occur at the workplace or outside. I have always demonstrated sympathy and support for all rape, sexual assault and harassment victims regardless of whether the perpetrator is powerful or not.

"In the same breath, I am conscious that false and malicious allegations are sometimes leveled by powerful groups to serve their own social and political agendas with the calculated motive of destroying the reputation and dignity of a person and thereby to shatter one’s credibility for collateral purposes.

"I categorically deny the allegation of rape leveled against me by Jami Raza. The story is simply untrue and intentionally fabricated at the instance of those who wish to silence me and through me, to compel the newspaper that I represent to support their repressive narrative.

"I first met Jami Raza when he was a freelance photographer and aspiring filmmaker in the 1990s or the early 2000s, which was the time that Jami had produced photographs of the Sir Jehangir Kothari bandstand for the purposes of architectural documentation and conservation. Impressed with Jami’s work, I enlisted him in 2003-04 to collaborate with me on a photo essay in the catalogue of the Sadequain exhibition at the Mohatta Palace Museum. I do recall going to his house sometime thereafter to condole on his father’s death but was unable to personally meet him. I do not recall ever being alone with Jami Raza. This has been the sum total of my interaction with Jami.

"I am convinced that the false and malicious allegation has been leveled at the instigation of powerful interests in the state and society who, for their own motives and the promotion of their own repressive narrative, wish to destroy my credibility and as a consequence thereof, the credibility of the newspaper group that I am associated with. It is not a mere coincidence that this particular tweet comes at a time when groups are being organized to demonstrate against Dawn and mysterious wall chalking is appearing, with both demanding the hanging of Dawn’s CEO and also its editorial staff.

"I am determined to expose those behind these false and malicious allegations and pledge to keep aloft the banner of fair and accurate reporting without fear or favour. So far as the tweets and some newspaper reports are concerned, I am initiating legal action to clear my name and reputation, and to safeguard the freedom of the press by bringing to justice all those responsible for these false and malicious allegations against me."

trying to Involve GHQ as if they dont have any better things to do, dont try to provoke an Institute for no reason. becoz if they come for you, jami will be the least of your concern .... Idiots.

I wonder what Dawn would do if this allegation was against Bajwa, Ghafoor or IK?

We already know what Dawn, Geo, other media Houses and their big names did in Gullalai-IK case there were shows after shows for weeks with no evidence!

Nostalgic what do you think is there any truth in Jami's allegation?

Sad to see this vermin is descendant of the great Sir Abdullah Haroon and Mehmud Haroon :(

Shocking this story and if true, he should be put in jail for a very long time.

That's halal. This is not, this is just a conspiracy against freedom of speech. Lol

A very plausible defence from Hameed Haroon. The timing of this entire thing was suspicious. I am inclined to believe Hameed Haroon for the following reasons (though this is not necessarily my final position) :

1. Jami would have named Haroon in the first instance in October but October seems to have been a warning shot. This is classic deep state posturing.

2. What happened the day before yesterday was a clear escalation which made no sense out of the blue.

So the planning, timing of the allegation and the like all seems to be motivated with a desire to bring Dawn down. I think Jami is being blackmailed or is under duress to make these claims.

Knowing the wretched state we live in do not put anything past our deep state.

So a man is feeling helpless after allegedly being raped by a media tycoon and you blame the establishment :s Pakistani fake liberals are of the worst kind.

allegedly being the key word. He has not been proven guilty so lets not judge him so. My stance is based on plausibility however, as said, I may be wrong but this is what I think. Will wait for further information.

Dawn CEO Hameed Haroon sends legal notice to filmmaker Jami

Dawn CEO Hameed Haroon, through his lawyer, sent a legal notice to filmmaker Jamshed Mahmood on Monday under Section 8 of the Defamation Ordinance 2002, asking for an unconditional public apology and retraction of rape allegations.

Talking to Dawn.com, the director, popularly known as Jami, said that he had received the notice and was in the process of reading through it. He added, however, that an apology was not "even a distant possibility".

“There is a lot that needs to be done for victims of sexual harassment and for future victims,” said Jami, who is currently in the United States. He also said that he had addressed many of the points raised in Haroon's notice in his previous posts on social media.

Taking to Twitter, he added: "It is self-censorship that hurts me the most than allegations of me joining the establishment."

Last year in October, Jami came forward with the accusation that he was raped by a “media tycoon” 13 years ago and on December 28, named Haroon as his alleged rapist.

In response, Haroon had issued a statement categorically rejecting the rape accusations and saying he would initiate legal action.

The four-page-long legal notice sent today, addressed to Jami's office in Karachi, refers to Jami's tweets from October 20, noting "the alleged rapist was never specifically named, even though hints and innuendos were dropped from time to time that could conceivably be taken as suggesting that the alleged rapist was our client [Haroon]".

Referring to the series of attacks on the Dawn Media Group in December, when a mob besieged Dawn Media’s offices in Islamabad and Karachi, the notice highlights that "some members of this mob had pictures/posters of our client which made specific reference to the false rape allegations being made by you".

"That almost two months after circulating your first tweet on being allegedly raped, and strangely and abruptly travelling outside Pakistan, on December 28, 2019 on the social media platform Twitter, you falsely and maliciously labelled our client as an alleged rapist.

"Since then, you have been continuing to circulate this false allegation all over Pakistan, including Karachi and abroad. Our client categorically denies that he has ever perpetrated sexual assault on anyone and categorically denies that he has raped you," says the notice.

"This false and malicious allegation has been levelled at the instigation of powerful interests in the state and society who, for their own motives and the promotion of their own repressive narrative, wish to destroy our client’s credibility, especially his credibility as a leading advocate of the freedom of the press."

The notice terms the allegation "a false statement [...] to injure the reputation" of Haroon and says it aims to subject Haroon to "ridicule, unjust criticism, dislike, contempt and hatred and to target the freedom of the press".

The notice says that unless Jami circulates an unconditional public apology and issues a public statement retracting his allegation of rape from all social media posts and other media outlets within 14 days of the receipt of this notice, Haroon reserves the right to initiate civil and criminal legal proceedings against the director under Section 499 of the Pakistan Penal Code, 1860, and the Defamation Ordinance, 2002, and other applicable laws.

Knowing the wretched state we live in do not put anything past our deep state.

So, let's go through this through a practical example of two scenarios considering an almost omnipotent, all-powerful, exceptionally brutal, and very powerful military establishment and see what they would go for.

Scenario 1: Gets a person who is mildly known to the ordinary public (Jami isn't a household name, even Hareem Shah/Tahir Shah gets more attention than him despite him being good director, he's not the frontman or a really popular figure) to use the platform of a movement (#Metoo that's already considered a Jewish conspiracy by the masses and general public) make an accusation that's 13 years old and cannot be proved in any form or way (zero circumstantial or relevant evidence) for a crime that doesn't have legal penalties according to Pakistani penal law (victims of rape can only be women in Pakistan - source BBC Urdu article).

Scenario 2: Honey trap the person they want to blackmail through any sleeper agent or a famous woman. More media highlight, more tabloid space, more gossip and general talk in the common public. If the guy is too spotless and doesn't let the sleeper agent close to him, he can be drugged etc. for the same purpose (the establishment is resourceful, right?) and then be blackmailed later. Or taken to the cleaners in the media with solid circumstantial evidence.

Added bonus of scenario one is that the moment this becomes a legal battle, Jami's accusations will be shot down like no tomorrow in the court. He may have to pay a hefty price for the accusations and may even have to leave the country to save whatever that's left of him.

So, obviously and of course the evil establishment has no other option but to choose scenario one because it's so foolproof and so intelligent. If you can't outsmart your opponents, you out-dumb them, right??

Do us a favor, please don't lawyer up or wear the mask of being an intellectual and adding "if's and but's" and just post your agenda and leave. You have posted long enough for all of us to know what you really mean - please remain intellectually honest and don't hide behind fake facades. In internet slang (sis we been knew all about yew).

Cheers, have a good day.

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court has restrained filmmaker Jamshed Mahmood, popularly known as Jami, from making any defamatory statement against Dawn Chief Executive Officer Hameed Haroon.

The single bench of the SHC headed by Justice Agha Faisal issued a notice to the defendant (Jami) for Feb 12 and ruled that, in the meanwhile, he was restrained from making any defamatory statement against the plaintiff.

Earlier, Mr Haroon through his lawyer filed a defamation suit in the SHC and submitted that the allegations levelled by Jami were baseless and unfounded, and sought a restraining order for the defendant.

The bench in its order said that the lawyer for plaintiff, Advocate Faisal Siddiqui, argued that the defendant undertook an insidious media campaign to allege that he was raped 13 years ago when he was presumably 34-year-old.

The lawyer maintained that it was prima facie apparent that no complaint in this regard was ever made to law enforcement agencies at the time or thereafter.

He further argued that protests were held against Mr Haroon and in support of Jami even when the latter did not directly blame the former for this alleged rape.

Mr Haroon also demanded damages of Rs1 billion from the defendant and the amount “to be disbursed to any charitable organisation or for any noble cause (including the freedom of the press) that the court deems appropriate and on such terms and conditions as the court determines”.

Last year in October, Jami came forward with an allegation that he was raped by a “media tycoon” 13 years ago and on Dec 28, he named the Dawn CEO as the alleged rapist.
