I dislike Bollywood movies in general but since I'm a big fan of history, I'm really looking forward to this one. It is loosely based on the real life conquest of the Hindu kingdom of Chittol by the second Sultan of the Khalji dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate, Alauddin Khalji.

Most of the plot borrows from a fictional account of that conquest, which was written by a Muslim poet for a Hindu audience. The poem, Padmavat, states that love for the then-queen of Chittor, Padmani, was the primary motive for Khalji's eight-month long siege of the city, which eventually ended in victory for the Muslim Sultan. The poet claims that Padmini chose self-immolation over marrying Khilji (The movie version of his last name) or becoming a part of his harem. This is historically inaccurate, however.

Interest for this movie is extremely high but the artistic liberties taken by the director has rubbed some people the wrong way. Chief among them is a love scene between Sultan Khilji and Queen Padmani, which resulted in some Rajput thugs destroying the set of the movie, as well as the portrayal of the Muslim sultan as a savage, uncultured barbarian.

Thoughts? Comments? Will you watch it? Do you think they'll skip the cheesy songs for this one?

P.S. Keep it civil, please. No need to turn this into a flame-war.

I will probably watch. I don't mind If directors take some creative liberties but I just don't understand why Alahuddin Khilji is portrayed as a barbarian, for which there is no historical evidence whatsoever.

Seems like SLB has taken inspiration from the Dothrakis in Game of Thrones.

It Took 200 Craftsmen, 600 Days & 400 Kg Of Gold To Create Deepika's Jewelry For 'Padmavati'!

When it comes to being a perfectionist, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali definitely makes a close cut. Be it the story, music or the look of his lead actors in his films, Bhansali and his team spend a good amount of time on research.
His big-budget mangum opuses have the perfect cast, the perfect look and yes, he surely knows how to create surreal sets that tend to leave the audience spellbound.

After his last outing Bajirao Mastani that swept most of the film awards last year, he's all geared up for the release of Padmavati. After courting their own shares of controversies, the trailer of the film released a few days ago and was an instant hit on the internet.
Cut to, Rani Padmini Aka Deepika.

SLB FILMS
Deepika, who will be seen playing the titular role of Rani Padmini looks like a dream in the trailer. But recreating her look for the big screen wasn't a cakewalk for the team.

Not many know that most of her jewelry is hand-crafted and her lehengas too are hand-crafted.
Over 200 craftsmen worked for 600 days with 400kg gold to create Deepika's jewelry for Padmavati and the video that has been shared from film's official handle throws light on the same journey.

Exactly, this. None of these Sultans were barbarians like the true Mongols from whom they were descended. Islam and Arab/Persian culture greatly refined.

A ruthless, powerful and shrewd conqueror yes but not a savage.

What's happening with the protests? The movie is all set to be released bar Rajasthan

Its a catch 22 situation. I would most likely fail to comment about whether it should be released or not without sounding like a hypocrite. I feel sorry for any person whose sentiments will be hurt because of this movie.

I was looking forward to watching this after all the fuss about it, but recently I watched another movie by the same director called Bajirao Mastani, and that was awful. I have now changed my mind that historical dramas are the one arena where Bollywood can produce some decent films, clearly that was a misjudgement. I'll watch the LOTR trilogy again instead.

If you want to watch the best period movie from Bollywood, watch Padman.

This movie is about Khiljis siege of Chittorgarh.

I recently came back from my Rajasthan trip, and I spend two whole days in Chittorgarh and Kumbalgarh, the hubs of Mewar. Probably the best two places I have been on planet(coming from someone who has been to 38 countries)

Being able to see and feel where this real seize happened, and still see the aftereffects of the invasion is amazing. You can see faces of idols destroyed and defaced even after 700 years.

I can share the pics of Chittorgarh if people want.

If the movie is offensive to the majority community then should not be shown. I think it's only the Rajput's who have a problem with it. Most other Hindu's are okay with it, the producer and financiers are all Hindu people. It could cause more religious disharmony between Hindu's and Muslim's centuries after Khiljis died:amir3

Bajirao mastani was decent historical drama+love story in my opinion.if you're comparing it with epic fantasy movie like lotr then its unfair.

Why is it unfair? Bollywood is one of the richest movie industries in the world, they have access to funds, technology, a massive pool of acting talent and everything else you could possibly need. I don't see why they can't produce better quality films which would get respect from worldwide audiences.

My comment was about your comparison between bajirao mastani and lotr.what you didn't like about bajirao mastani?
Bollywood is not the richest movie industry compared to us,china,Japan, south Korea etc Bollywood is behind.
Making a big scale vfx heavy movie require large budget which is not in reach currently because boxoffice recovery is not there.
Lack of quality directors who can handle vfx heavy technical projects doesn't help either.
And domestic audience is not that supportive to classy movies either.commercial movies that strikes the chords of family audiences rules boxoffice in india.

What I didn't like about it? Poor acting mostly, the Padukone girl was like a wax dummy. Absolutely no charisma, although she looked spectacular. The story was cliched, maybe that goes with one supposedly built on a historical sequence, but it could have been directed better to at least produce some engagement with the lead characters. As it was just looked like an extremely expensive photo shoot. I don't see how you need a big budget to fix those issues.

If your conclusion is that Indian domestic audience is too dumb to support classy movies, well you are better placed than me to make that judgement.

Bajirao mastani focused more on peshwa(cheif minister) bajirao's life story of how he served maratha empire in lots of wars and remained undefeated till death.
He won lots of wars but lost against family and religious forces who didn't allow him to live happily with mastani.their story ends on tragic note.
I agree that The movie could have been better with good acting and without unnecessary fictional songs like malhari and pinga.
Overall it was well received movie by indian audiences similar to movie "zodha akbar"

And about indian audience I think they are not dumb but not as supportive to urban, realastic & edgy or basically any kind of experimental cinema.

Saw Padmaavat yesterday and can't see any reason for the protests by Rajputs.

Rajputs are depicted as chivalrous, brave and honorable to a fault whereas Muslims are shown as cruel backstabbers with no honour.

It's all black and white with only Deepika displaying shades of grey.

One feels Muslims should be the one to protest the way they have been painted.

Pathetic if it is true. Muslims should protest this movie.

But again, Indian Muslims have nothin to do with Khilji unless the movie insulted Islam too.

Saw some clips and it does praise Rajputs a lot. Don’t know what the protest is about.

Protestors suspected that there was a dream sequence between khilji and queen padmavati in the movie.but later director clarified that there is nothing like it in the movie still karni sena didn't believe it and disrupted law & order.

I normally like Bansali's films but behind the lavish sets, costumes and locations, this film was awful.

Shahid Kapoor looked out of his depth in his role and the whole film was really just about the last scene.

Would not recommend this at all.
